APU’s School of Music to Receive Historic Gift to Build Pat Boone Scoring Stage & Recording Studio

Legendary recording artist, author, and actor Pat Boone will donate a historic gift to Azusa Pacific University’s School of Music to build a state-of-the-art scoring stage and recording studio, where aspiring performers, composers, and filmmakers will come alongside Christ-centered faculty mentors to learn their craft. Boone visited the campus on February 23 to sign and commemorate the gift agreement and meet with current music students and faculty.

“Azusa Pacific University is grateful to Pat Boone for this extraordinary gift that will extend his inspiring legacy by equipping a new generation of artists to transform their industry for the cause of Christ,” said Adam J. Morris, PhD, president. “APU’s Pat Boone Scoring Stage and Recording Studio will be a premier production facility located just east of Los Angeles, the entertainment capital of the world and a profoundly influential place for music.”

The new complex, located on APU’s East Campus, will enhance the Warren Music Building and feature a scoring stage with tracking for a full film orchestra, 100-voice choir, and production suites.

“Music and movies have the power to persuade, make deep impressions that propel behavior, and are a moral influence on society,” said Boone. “I am partnering with APU to prepare students for a career that spurs positive and righteous activity in the entertainment industry. I believe God will breathe His Spirit into our efforts to further His use of young talents doing inspirational things if we pray and give toward His purpose.”

Although he originally planned to become a teacher/preacher, Boone experienced massive success as a young artist and felt called to a career in music. He has been recognized by Billboard magazine as a top 10 all-time recording artist, having sold more than 45 million records. Boone earned 38 Top 40 and 6 No. 1 hits with 13 gold singles, 2 gold albums, 1 platinum album, and holds the record for 220 consecutive weeks with one or more singles on the Billboard pop charts. He has recorded over 2,600 songs, is a Gospel Music Hall of Fame inductee, and a six-time Grammy nominee. Also a No. 1 bestselling author and actor, Boone has published 28 autobiographical and motivational books, several of which focus on faith, starred in 29 Hollywood films, and has three stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, one each for recording, motion picture, and television.

Boone and his wife, Shirley, were married for more than 65 years and have 4 daughters, 16 grandchildren, and 17 great grandchildren. A devout Christian, Boone has supported nonprofits across the world. In 1960, Pat Boone wrote the lyric to the theme from the movie “Exodus,” “The Exodus Song (This Land Is Mine),” considered by many to be Israel’s second national anthem and he was named the Christian Ambassador of Tourism by the Israel Ministry of Tourism.

“The celebration of Pat Boone’s lifetime of music making, faith, and service combined with transformative interactions between Boone and APU’s music students will create a meaningful experience for all,” stated John E. Simons, DMA, interim dean of the School of the Arts. “The Pat Boone Scoring Stage and Recording Studio will continue Boone’s legacy as APU builds on its deep connection with the music industry and prepares the next generation of leaders.”

APU honored Boone with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his service to Christ and the arts at the university’s 2023 Industry Spotlight at Warner Bros. studios, and premiered Boone’s song, “Jehoshua,” with the APU Symphony Orchestra, student soloists, and student choir.

“The Commercial Music program at APU is built around students collaborating on real-world industry projects, guided by faculty who are themselves first-class working professionals,” Michael Lee, MM, professor and director of Music Technology. “Thanks to the generosity of Pat Boone and the Boone family, that experience will extend to include live film scoring sessions, immersive sound design projects, and student-accessible production suites. The Pat Boone Scoring Stage and Recording Studio will be an essential part of APU’s ongoing mission to train culture-changing artists of the future.”

At APU, students flourish in an environment that supports musical excellence and artistic integrity firmly grounded in Christian faith. APU music students experience a unique blend of academic rigor, experiential learning, and personal support that sets them apart.

APU School of Nursing’s RN to BSN Online Program Ranked #2 in California by RegisteredNursing.org

Azusa Pacific University’s School of Nursing’s (SON) online RN to BSN program was ranked #2 in California by RegisteredNursing.org in recognition of the university’s accelerated program and innovative curriculum.

“The RN to BSN program at APU tailors the curriculum to allow working nurses and students enrolled in an associate’s degree nursing program to engage in online coursework to complete a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN),”said Renee Pozza, PhD, RN, CNS, FNP-BC, dean of the SON. “We have several partnerships with community colleges to enroll their students concurrently in our BSN program, leading to graduation in 24-27 months. This is critical for California as we expand the nursing workforce educated at the BSN level, in a timely and cost effective manner.”

Online RN to BSN programs offer working nurses a more flexible way to earn a bachelor’s degree, which sets them up for success when searching for careers at the best hospitals. Benefits of APU’s program include potential discounts for community college graduates, consistent class cohorts that graduate at the same time, and military friendly resources. The RN-BSN department offers three pathways for BSN completion at APU:

  • Traditional RN-BSN/post ADN completion (four semesters)
  • Summer Bridge RN-BSN/for current ADN students (four semesters, merge into RN-BSN post ADN)
  • Integrative Enrollment Pathway (IEP): Concurrent ADN/BSN program in partnership with – Pasadena Community College with expansion to other community college partners starting in Fall 2024 (six semesters)

“I am both humbled and enthusiastic in accepting the role of dean of the newly formed College of Education and Behavioral Sciences,” Kula said. “I see tremendous possibilities for synergy across our constituent departments whose work revolves in different ways around ensuring that God’s purposes for every precious individual come to fruition, whether through research or by equipping students to live out their calling. There is so much great work already happening, and I look forward to celebrating and building on that!”

Kula began her career serving as an educator as a Spanish teacher and the co-chair of the Language Department at Monrovia High School. She later transitioned into faculty positions in the Teacher Education program at Claremont Graduate University and at Life Pacific University, where she also assumed administrative assignments. In 2016, Kula joined APU’s faculty as a qualitative methodologist in the doctoral Educational Leadership program, which expanded to include the role of faculty coordinator for the teaching emphasis in the MEd program. She was then appointed as the director for the doctoral program in Educational Leadership, and has served as department chair and a member of the School of Education leadership team since 2021. Kula also served in other roles on campus including chair of the Doctoral Studies Council, chair of the Faculty Research Council, and as the general education faculty mentor for Title V Hispanic Serving Institution Grant. Simultaneously, Kula maintained an active research agenda and was awarded with APU’s Rose Leigler Graduate Faculty Scholarship Achievement Award in 2022.

Kula holds a PhD in Education with an emphasis in Teaching, Learning, and Culture from Claremont Graduate University (CGU), a MA in Education with specializations in teaching Spanish language and literature, teaching in multilingual/multicultural settings, and language arts methods from CGU, and a BA in Linguistics and Spanish Literature from Pomona College. Kula’s areas of research include immigration experiences and factors of achievement for students from Latin American immigrant and Indochinese refugee families—groups particularly underserved by educational institutions. She received CGU’s prestigious Tae Han Kim Award for commitment to culture and humanity in research. Her dissertation, Explaining the Success of High-Achieving 2nd-Generation Latino Students at Elite Colleges and Universities, led to further research and numerous publications, including a co-edited book, High-Achieving Latino Students: Successful Pathways Toward College and Beyond, which won the 2021 American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education’s Book of the Year award in the edited book category.

The College of Education and Behavioral Sciences, launching July 1, 2024, represents a merger of two current schools—the School of Education and the School of Behavioral and Applied Sciences. The college is comprised of the Department of Clinical Psychology, the Department of Criminal Justice, the Department of Educational Leadership, the Department of Higher Education, the Department of Marriage and Family Therapy, the Department of Psychology, the Department of School Counseling and School Psychology, the Department of Social Work, and the Division of Teacher Education. The new school brings together more than 110 faculty and staff and serves more than 2,100 students.

APU’s Social Work Program Recognized Among California’s Best Schools

Azusa Pacific University’s Master of Social Work (MSW) program was recently recognized by CaliforniaSocialWorkEDU.org as one of the “Editor’s Picks for the Best CSWE-accredited MSW Programs in California.” APU is ranked alongside top universities, such as UCLA and USC. CaliforniaSocialWorkEDU.org recommends APU’s MSW program for many reasons, including flexible options for one-year, two-year, and three-year degrees, and electives in various social work fields.

“We are honored to be recognized as one of the best CSWE accredited MSW programs in California,” said Kimberly Setterlund, MSW, LCSW, assistant professor and chair of the Department of Social Work. “As a primarily in-person program, we are firmly committed to advancing our mission inside and outside of the classroom, which is to prepare ethical, holistically trained social work practitioners. The faculty are dedicated to engaging students in deep learning, mentoring individuals for their career, and calling to advocate, serve, and be a voice for marginalized individuals and communities.”

APU’s MSW program, which is offered at the Azusa and San Bernardino campuses, is designed to prepare students for a wide range of social work opportunities, and to gain the foundational skills necessary for effective social work practice upon graduation. The program includes full-time, part-time, and advanced standing options and focuses on developing skills through innovative classroom teaching and applied learning in a dynamic, community-based field internship. APU receives accreditation from the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC). In addition, the BSW and MSW programs are accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
