APU Announces Nursing Education Partnership with Citrus College

Azusa Pacific University and Citrus College announce a new partnership between the two institutions which will extend access to nursing education for residents of the San Gabriel Valley and greater Los Angeles area while offering a quicker and more affordable pathway for students to earn their Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree.

“We are thrilled to see these two excellent nursing programs join together with this new integrated curriculum,” said Renee Pozza, PhD, RN, CNS, FNP-BC, dean of APU’s College of Nursing and Health Sciences. “Students in this program will benefit from a collaborative program of study taught by expert faculty from both institutions. Collaborative programs, such as the partnership between Citrus and APU, enhance student access in a cost-effective and efficient pathway to complete a bachelor’s degree in nursing.”

This collaboration enables nursing students to concurrently enroll at APU and Citrus College, earning credits and clinical experience through both institutions. In just six semesters of total program study, Citrus’ Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) students will graduate from APU with their BSN. This dual preparation makes such students highly employable, given that California healthcare organizations prefer to hire BSN-prepared graduates.

“At Citrus College, we couldn’t be more excited to partner with Azusa Pacific University and give our nursing students a great opportunity to accelerate their professional career,” said Salima Allahbachayo, DNP, FNP-BC, RN, director of health sciences at Citrus College. “As a community college, we place a great deal of importance on access and affordability. Not only will our students be able to save time and money through this partnership, they will also enter the nursing workforce as BSN-prepared nurses with a deeper level of knowledge and experience. Put simply, this is a game changer.”

The accelerated program elevates the proficiency of nurses entering Southern California hospitals and clinics, moving such graduates beyond the two-year associate’s degree while increasing their skills as caregivers. In combining the low-cost, open-access program at Citrus College with APU’s nationally ranked School of Nursing, students from all educational backgrounds will enter a pathway to a high-paying, impactful career. Students will benefit from APU’s RN to BSN program, which was recently ranked #2 in California by RegisteredNursing.org. According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing and the Board of Registered Nursing’s annual surveys, APU graduates approximately 4 percent of the newly registered nurses in California, with an employment rate for all pre-licensure programs at 100 percent within a year of graduation, and 90 percent of those employed within California.

“This partnership between APU and our neighbor, Citrus College, demonstrates a shared commitment to offering innovative and accessible pathways to help students achieve academic success and meet their professional goals,” said President Adam J. Morris, PhD. “Azusa Pacific’s nationally ranked nursing program produces graduates known for their compassionate and competent care, who are leaders in their field and serve at top hospitals throughout Southern California and beyond.”

Baccalaureate-prepared nurses have been shown to improve patient outcomes and reduce hospital costs. Studies have shown that nurses with bachelor’s degrees score higher on measures of quality and safety, and earn more. APU ranks in the top 14 percent of nursing programs nationwide for early and mid-career salaries, according to Payscale’s College Salary Report.

At the same time, bachelor’s degrees can present financial challenges to students and their families. This effort contributes to the Institute of Medicine’s 2020 goal of increasing baccalaureate-prepared nurses to 80 percent by 2020. The National Education Progression in Nursing Collaborative challenged nursing educators to create a seamless model that allows ADN students to complete the BSN degree within 1-2 semesters.

“On behalf of the entire campus community, I thank our neighbors at APU for making this extraordinary opportunity possible,” said Greg Schulz, EdD, superintendent/president of Citrus College. “Nursing is an incredibly rewarding profession that plays a vital role in our society. Through this partnership, we will be able to ensure that even more students are prepared to enter the field of health care.”

Students entering the Citrus/APU program will have completed prerequisite courses required for admission to the Citrus nursing program. Upon acceptance to the Citrus/APU program, the student concurrently enrolls in classes at Citrus and at APU, receiving complete student status at both institutions.

The two-year sequence covers 70 units at Citrus in courses such as pharmacology, psychology, medical-surgical, obstetrics, and pediatrics, and 50 units at APU, including pathophysiology, research and statistics, ethics and spirituality, and evidence-based practice. After the student’s fourth semester at Citrus, students earn their associate’s degree in nursing and take the state licensure exam to become a registered nurse. After taking a final course in public health at APU, they will earn their bachelor’s degree.

APU will develop a cohort of more than 50 interprofessional trainees in a newly designed 12-week longitudinal geriatric clinical rotation. The educational program will include interdisciplinary nursing, medicine, physical therapy, psychology, social work, and theology students in a team-based approach. In addition, the grant aims to provide education to faculty, health care systems, and community organizations, ultimately improving geriatric care and increasing the dedicated workforce for older adults.

“As 1 of only 41 higher education institutions in the country, and 1 of only 2 in California, to receive this HRSA grant, APU is uniquely positioned to provide high-quality health care to the geriatric population of San Bernardino County,” said Renee Pozza, PhD, RN, CNS, FNP-BC, dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences. “Many regions across the county have a growing number of older adults who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia (ADRD) which is why this innovative and holistic geriatric training is critically important.”

The HRSA seeks to improve geriatric health outcomes and achieve health equity through access to quality services, a skilled health workforce, and innovative, high-value programs. By providing financial support to universities like APU, the HRSA is helping advance the education and careers of the future healthcare workforce to provide geriatric care to the anticipated 1.5 million individuals in California by 2040 who are 65 years of age and older with dementia.

Informed by a Christian worldview, APU’s College of Nursing and Health Sciences prepares professional nurses to work collaboratively with other health care workers at all levels and to be future leaders who will advance God’s work in health care. Through innovative programs and expert faculty, nursing and other professional students engage in challenging discussions, mentoring relationships in small classroom settings, invaluable hands-on experiences in state-of-the-art simulation labs, and a culturally diverse practice environment that includes both study abroad and global research opportunities. In its 50th year, the program provides a transformative education for bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral students, called to enter this helping profession.

In addition to the Best U.S. Colleges placement, APU also ranked high on the WSJ/College Pulse lists for Social Mobility (No. 29 nationally and No. 5 among private universities), Student Experience (No. 73), and Best Salaries (No. 161).

“We are honored by this national recognition of the extraordinary education provided by Azusa Pacific University faculty,” said Anita Fitzgerald Henck, PhD, provost. “The depth of student/faculty interaction in the classroom, laboratory, and clinical setting, in addition to global engagement and academic service learning, provides a truly holistic education. APU offers the best of academics, combined with Christian faith integration, and engagement with community partners at the undergraduate, masters, and doctoral level.”

The Wall Street Journal/College Pulse Best Colleges in the U.S. is the preeminent college ranking report which rates the top 500 colleges and universities in the country. Unlike other national rankings which prioritize admission rates and subjective criteria such as reputational rankings from opinions of leaders at other universities, WSJ’s methodology is more reflective of outcomes such as salary impact for graduates, years to pay off net price of tuition, graduation rate impact, social mobility, and student satisfaction. Other distinct factors include learning opportunities, preparation for career, character score, and diversity.

APU Professor Tasha Bleistein, PhD, Selected by U.S. Department of State for Prestigious English Language Specialist Project

The U.S. Department of State announced the selection of Azusa Pacific University professor Tasha Bleistein, PhD, for a three-week Language Specialist project focusing on conducting an analysis of the Binational Centers’ virtual English programs and offering findings, recommendations, and training in Peru at Instituto Cultural Peruano Norteamericano. Bleistein is part of a select group, as her project is one of approximately 240 that the English Language Specialist Program supports each year.

Bleistein has directed the online TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) program at APU since 2012 and taught in the program since its inception in 2009. She regularly presents at international conferences on technology and has served as the principal investigator to develop two virtual exchanges and a MOOC for the U.S. Department of State’s English Language Programs. Over the summer, Bleistein worked with a team to create an online course for the U.S. AID project on blended/hybrid learning as part of higher education reform in Vietnam that included in-person training in three cities. For the Peruvian Binational Center project, Bleistein will be carrying out an analysis of the current state of the adult program in the virtual modality. Based on the analysis, she will suggest changes and implementations in accordance with the current teaching methodologies and strategies in virtual environments, as well as suggest changes in the curricular structure to best suit the needs of students.

The English Language Specialist Program is the premier opportunity for leaders in the field of teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) to enact meaningful and sustainable changes in the way that English is taught abroad. Through projects developed by U.S. Embassies in more than 80 countries, English Language Specialists work directly with local teacher trainers, educational leaders, and ministry of education officials to exchange knowledge, build capacity, and establish partnerships benefiting participants, institutions, and communities in the United States and overseas.

Since 1991, the English Language Specialist Program has supported in-country, virtual, and mixed projects in which hundreds of TESOL scholars and educators promote English language learning, enhance English teaching capacity, and foster mutual understanding between the U.S. and other countries through cultural exchange. During their projects, English Language Specialists may conduct intensive teacher training, advise ministries of education or participate in high-level educational consultations, and offer plenary presentations at regional, national or international TESOL conferences. These projects are challenging and those selected represent the best of the U.S. TESOL community. In return, the program provides professional development opportunities to help participants experience different cultures and build skills that can greatly enhance their TESOL careers at home.

English Language Specialists are counted among the more than 50,000 individuals participating in the U.S. Department of State exchange programs each year. The Specialist Program is administered by the Center for Intercultural Education and Development at Georgetown University.

Images in the exhibition range from the 1990s to today. They are united around the theme of how man made structures interact with landscapes. Capturing images that evolve from the freedom of travel and open intentionality is a practice that many artists seek to shine a light upon, depicting an undefined yet profound point of view. The photographs in this collection traverse imagery that varies from mundane to sensational.

  • 6:30 p.m. | BFA in Acting Industry Showcase | Screening Room 12
  • 6:30-9 p.m. | Artist Alley- featuring displays by Art, Design, Games, Communication, and Animation students (open to all attendees) | Steven J. Ross Theater Archive
  • 7:30 p.m. | Cinematic Arts Premiere Night- featuring the APU Studio Orchestra directed by Mark Gasbarro (orchestrator of Jurassic World and Star Wars Rogue One) | Steven J. Ross Theater

The Industry Spotlight gives students the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to share their films that they’ve worked on all year at the same place that movie stars like Clint Eastwood and Charlie Chaplin premiered theirs. A recent APU film won the LA Independent Film Festival and another was written about by the Motion Picture Academy as a “new director to watch.” Located just 30 miles outside of Hollywood, APU’s proximity to the film industry offers students unparalleled opportunities. APU Cinematic Arts students have interned at Disney, CBS Television, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Scott Free Productions, and a number of other top entertainment organizations.

“Last year, after the Industry Spotlight, 17 students signed with agents, which led to them being featured in A-list movies, award winning TV shows, and even Super Bowl commercials,” said Jill Brennan-Lincoln (Gilmore Girls), MA, chair of APU’s Department of Theater Arts. “We’re thrilled that our students can experience real world, industry-centric moments like this to kickstart their careers.” APU’s Department of Theater Arts prepares outstanding and influential artists in an ever-growing and multi-faceted performing arts profession. The Hollywood Reporter touts APU’s BFA in Acting for the Stage and Screen as “innovative.”

APU’s animation program, founded by Tony Bancroft (director of Mulan) and headed by Chuck Grieb (Nickelodeon, Disney TV Animation), will premier junior and senior films. The animation showcase attracts recruiters from top animation studios, with two student animators hired by Disney after the Spotlight last year.

Notable alumni from APU’s Theater and Cinematic Arts programs include Ricky Staub ’06, director of Netflix’s Concrete Cowboy and writer for John Wick: Chapter 4; Darnell Abraham ’09, currently starring as George Washington in the Hamilton national tour; Ryan Bowman, manager of current programing at Universal Television (NBCU); Qam Hale, storyboard revisionist for Disney Television Animation; and Amanda Jaros, who starred as Alina in 1883.

Media Note

Although the Industry Spotlight is sold out, press passes are still available for credentialed members of the media. Please contact Frank Minano (fminano@apu.edu) if you plan to attend.

APU Names Dr. Anita Fitzgerald Henck Provost

Azusa Pacific University President Adam J. Morris, PhD, named Glendora, Calif., resident Anita Fitzgerald Henck, PhD, provost and chief academic officer at APU, effective July 1, 2023. Henck’s expertise lies in aligning programs/institutions with best academic practices; developing innovative curriculum and student service programs; building strong, healthy teams; and leading turnaround assignments in administrative areas. Her experiences and responsibilities at Azusa Pacific University (Azusa, CA), Eastern Nazarene College (Quincy, MA), and American University (Washington, DC) have included assignments as dean, department chair, program director, faculty member, vice president, board/press liaison, policy and speech writer, ombudsperson, and assistant to the president and provost. She becomes the university’s sixth provost following a 10-month nationwide search guided by a 12-member Provost Search Advisory Committee.

“God’s timing is perfect and I’m praising Him for the appointment of Dr. Anita Henck as our new provost,” said Morris. “Dr. Henck has a deep and abiding relationship with Jesus Christ and an unmistakable call on her life to serve in Christian higher education. Her genuine love for our students and our community, heart for faculty, collaborative spirit, ability to innovate, aptitude for organizational change, and skill in shaping institutional culture, coupled with her outstanding research, writing, and teaching, and strong commitment to the mission of APU are among the many reasons why I invited Dr. Henck into this important role. The coming years will be critical as we work together to position APU for a healthy and thriving future and I am incredibly grateful and excited to have Dr. Henck join the senior leadership team.”

As the Chief Academic Officer of APU, Henck will lead and advocate for APU’s academic mission, overseeing all schools, colleges, and libraries. Reporting to the president and serving as a member of the President’s Cabinet, Henck will provide strategic leadership and oversight of academics and broad university initiatives.

“I am honored and humbled to be selected to serve as APU’s sixth provost and to partner with faculty and academic leadership to enrich APU’s academic identity. The transformative power of education–for individuals, families, and communities–is a compelling call in which I have invested my professional life,” said Henck. “Across Azusa Pacific University’s 124-year history, our reputation has been well established through our academic programs and external partnerships across Southern California and beyond. With a renewed focus on innovation and agility, APU’s academic future could not be brighter and our mission could not be more clear. I am convinced that our best days are ahead and am honored to partner with President Morris and members of his cabinet as we position APU to flourish in a time of change across all of American higher education.”

Henck assumes this role after serving as dean of APU’s School of Education since 2011, where she provided turnaround leadership during major transition, improved enrollment, enhanced fiscal health, led a team that reshaped the curricular portfolio, redesigned the EdD in Educational Leadership program with a 96 percent completion rate, and launched the Next Generation Superintendent’s professional development group. Today, APU is a leader in preparing candidates for educator credentials in the state of California. Henck came to APU in 2006 as an associate professor in the Department of Doctoral Higher Education. She later served as the interim program director for the MS in College Counseling and Student Development from 2008-09, and the program director for the MA in Leadership and the chair of the Department of Leadership and College Student Development from 2009-11. Previously, Henck served as the vice president for student development and retention at Eastern Nazarene College.

“After a rigorous search process, I am excited that Dr. Henck has accepted Dr. Morris’ offer to be APU’s next provost,” said Samuel M. Girguis, PsyD, committee chair. “Guiding our Christ-centered academy requires clear leadership acumen, passion for the power of education to transform lives, and wisdom to traverse a complex and nuanced role. Dr. Henck possesses keen insight, extensive experience, and solid team-building skills to move Azusa Pacific’s academy into this exciting new chapter of innovation and influence. I am grateful to Dr. Morris, the Provost Advisory Search Committee, and the APU community for their prayerful discernment leading to this significant announcement.”

Henck has served APU and faith-based higher education on the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities Executive Committee of Schools of Education deans; and the Doctoral Education Council for the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities, focused on elevating support for and academic quality of doctoral programs. To foster collaboration, connection, and innovation among California’s K-12 leaders, she developed the APU School of Education Superintendents’ Collaborative, bringing district school superintendents to campus as thought partners to consider pressing issues, promote professional growth and development, and fuel persistence among new leaders.

Henck earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Indiana University, a Master of Arts in Educational Administration, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Education from American University. She completed Harvard School of Law’s senior executive training on negotiation.

Henck is a lifelong member of the Church of the Nazarene, serving on church boards and denominational commissions. Henck and her husband, Bill, have two adult children, both of whom hold doctorates and work in education, a son-in-law, and two grandsons.
