APU Receives $1.25 Million Lilly Endowment Compelling Preaching Grant

As part of the Lilly Endowment’s Compelling Preaching Initiative, Azusa Pacific University recently received a $1,249,837 grant to support the Formation of the Preacher for More Effective and Engaging Preaching project. This initiative, which will be implemented by APU’s Center for Vocational Ministry (CVM) in collaboration with the School of Theology, will be funded by the grant from January 2024 through December 2028.

“Through this work, we will help aspiring and current preachers to define their personal theology of preaching, while also learning alongside other preachers,” said Jenn Graffius, DMin, executive director of CVM. “Compelling preaching is more than just “good” preaching. It is the transformational, instructive, hope-building, action-inducing, community-centered delivery of the good news. This robust theology of preaching will impact the preachers, and have a transformative impact on churches and communities.” Instructed by renowned pastors and preaching scholars, the Formation of the Preacher project offers a continuing education certificate in transformational preaching. This comprehensive program encompasses all levels of the formational process of a preacher and is open to pastors at all stages of their career (including undergraduate and graduate ministry students). Designed to provide a means for the academy and the church to collaborate, this program will provide pastors and ministry leaders with robust mentoring training, peer-to-peer mentoring, preaching conferences, coaching, and lectures from renowned pastors. Special focus will be given to women in ministry, pastors of color, and those serving in solo pastor congregations.

“In 1899, Azusa Pacific University was founded as the Training School for Christian Workers, and today APU continues to train Christian workers to become agents of change in the world for the cause of Christ, “ said Azusa Pacific University President Adam J. Morris, PhD. “Through the Compelling Preaching Initiative, we pray that pastors will grow in their theology of preaching and be transformed while learning alongside others in community, for the sake of the Kingdom and the church.”

APU is one of 81 organizations receiving grants through this competitive round of the Compelling Preaching Initiative. Reflecting the diversity of Christianity in the United States, the organizations are affiliated with mainline Protestant, Evangelical, Catholic, Orthodox, Anabaptist and Pentecostal faith communities. Many of the organizations are rooted in the Black Church and in Hispanic and Asian American Christian traditions.

“Throughout history, preachers often have needed to adapt their preaching practices to engage new generations of hearers more effectively,” said Christopher L. Coble, Lilly Endowment’s vice president for religion. “We are pleased that the organizations receiving grants in this initiative will help pastors and others in ministry engage in the kinds of preaching needed today to ensure that the gospel message is heard and accessible for all audiences.”

The Lilly Endowment launched the Compelling Preaching Initiative in 2022 because of its interest in supporting projects that help to nurture the religious lives of individuals and families and foster the growth and vitality of Christian congregations in the U.S.

Ken Ludwig’s clever adaptation of the classic boasts all the glamor, intrigue, and suspense of Dame Agatha’s celebrated novel. With a healthy dose of humor to quicken the pace, and with a killer in their midst, the passengers rely on detective Hercule Poirot to identify the murderer, in case he or she strikes again. The production is directed by Matthew McCray who also directed APU’s recent production of Cinderella.

Murder on the Orient Express is one of Agatha Christie’s most well-known mysteries and it’s such a pleasure to get to stage it at APU,” McCray said. “Being set on a train presented interesting and unusual design challenges for a stage production. We have crafted a smart and simple set design that will keep the audience guessing to the very end. Whodunit plays are a lot of fun for the creative team and the audience.”

APU’s plays and musicals are produced through a program of rigorous training. The Department of Theater Arts prepares outstanding, innovative, and influential artists in an ever-growing and multi-faceted performing arts profession.

APU School of Nursing Receives $1.5 Million Grant with LA County Department of Public Health and Pasadena City College

Azusa Pacific University’s nationally ranked School of Nursing (SON) received a $1,498,963 grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) with Ruth Mielke, PhD, RN, CNM, FACNM, WHNP-BC, associate dean of faculty affairs in the SON as the principal investigator. This grant will fund the Los Angeles County – Simulation Education Training (LAC-SET) Project, a partnership between APU, Los Angeles County, and Pasadena City College for the next three years.

“This is a unique partnership and it’s exciting to provide new modalities for nurses who have worked in the field for many years and for students who are still in school,” said Renee Pozza, PhD, RN, CNS, FNP-BC, dean of the SON.

The LAC-SET project will increase simulation training in the areas of maternal child health and aging with innovative use of community settings. LA County has higher maternal morbidity and mortality rates than most other counties across California, increasing the demand for nurses to develop earlier recognition of health issues in mothers. The LAC-SET project will use two simulation modalities to train nurses: virtual reality and high-fidelity manikins. “Simulation enables students to participate in scenarios that occur in environments closely resembling a clinical setting and helps them to gain nursing experiences and confidence, even before they start working as professionals,” Mielke said. “The students are able to put everything they have been taught into practice, cope with any difficulties and problems, and even make mistakes without causing damage, and all that in a safe environment, without any risk whatsoever for patients.” This project will enhance nursing education by increasing the number of faculty who use simulation modalities through International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation Learning (INACSL) competencies and in so doing, expand and create a practice-ready, diverse nursing workforce.

In addition to Mielke, the LAC-SET project will be implemented by SON faculty including Mary Ann Shinnick, PhD, RN, MN, ACNP, CNS, CHSE-A, FSSH, director of simulation and associate professor; Friary Nguyen, MSN, RN, CNE, CHSE, instructor; Jenna Reyes, EdD, RN, CHSE, department chair of nursing education; David Picella, PhD, RN, FNP, CNS, GS-C, CPG, director of the MSN Adult Gerontology Nurse Practitioner program; and Diane Newman, MS, DrPH(c), grants administrator.

The SON was recently recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the best nursing programs in the country. All Nurses, a top industry publication, also ranked APU’s BSN to MSN program as a top 10 program in the country, with a top 10 RN to BSN ranking in California.

“We’ve been intentional about creating many pathways and bridge programs for nurses to come back to school and achieve their next degree seamlessly,” Pozza said. “It’s exciting to see that our programs have earned these national recognitions.”

Informed by a Christian worldview, APU’s nursing school prepares professional nurses for leadership and compassionate, collaborative practice in health care. Through innovative programs and expert faculty, nursing students engage in challenging discussions, mentoring relationships in small classroom settings, invaluable hands-on experiences in state-of-the-art simulation labs, and a culturally diverse practice environment that includes both study abroad and global research opportunities. In its 49th year, the program provides a transformative education for bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral students, called to enter this helping profession.

“I am thrilled with the selection of Dr. Keith Hall for the inaugural Presidential Fellows program with the CCCU,” said APU President Adam J. Morris, PhD. “Dr. Hall is a seasoned professional with a deep love for students and an abiding relationship with Jesus Christ. He will thrive in this program and will continue to be used by God to advance the work of Christian higher education long into the future.”

Hall is a member of the President’s Cabinet and provides strategic leadership and oversight to the Athletics Department, the Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and Student Affairs. He leads ongoing efforts to cultivate a university culture and climate that enables the diverse demography of faculty, staff, and students at APU to thrive and experience belonging. To accomplish this goal, Hall works collaboratively with administrative, curricular, cocurricular, and student leaders to employ strategic initiatives that enrich the holistic experience of all students across the university system.

Prior to moving to Southern California, Hall was a psychology instructor at Tennessee State University and director of multicultural affairs at Lipscomb University. This Synergistic Congregations Project is a collaboration among academic researchers, pastors, ministry leaders, and church members. “This project will enhance the vitality of Christian congregations by inviting the Church and academy to work alongside each other in meaningful ways to bridge the gap between Sunday’s worship and the work of their congregants from Monday through Saturday,” said Matthew Elofson, PhD, Interim Dean of the School of Theology and principal investigator of the grant. Jennifer Graffius, DMin, executive director of the CVM and co-investigator of the grant added, “We are thrilled about the opportunity to dive deeper into developing a robust theology of faith and work for faith communities and to partner with churches and industry leaders as we do it.”

The project will gather pastors and leaders from 20 churches in four geographical areas including: Southern California, Northern California, the Southwest, and Pacific Northwest. The participants will gather regularly over five-years to explore how churches can effectively empower Sunday worshippers to embrace their callings as Christians in their everyday lives. The project will conclude with one church in each region hosting an Engaging Faith Conference in the final two years to share what they have discovered with other congregations in their area.

“We are at an exciting time in our history, as we celebrate our 125th anniversary,” said APU President Adam J. Morris, PhD. “As we continue to seek to advance the work of God in the world, this grant provides an exciting opportunity for the faculty and staff of the Center for Vocational Ministry and the School of Theology at Azusa Pacific University to partner with a number of faith communities. We hope these connections will cultivate robust relationships between our university and local churches throughout the Western United States.”

APU is one of more than 100 organizations that received grants through a competitive process related to the Thriving Congregations Initiative. Reflecting a wide variety of Christian traditions, the organizations represent mainline Protestant, evangelical, Catholic, Orthodox, peace church and Pentecostal faith communities.

“Congregations play an essential role in deepening the faith of individuals and contributing to the vitality of communities,” said Christopher L. Coble, Lilly Endowment’s vice president for religion. “We hope that these programs will nurture the vibrancy and spark the creativity of congregations, helping them imagine new ways to share God’s love in their communities and across the globe.”

The accreditation process requires a comprehensive evaluation of the curriculum and field experiences. This includes reviewing the educator’s content knowledge, skills and dispositions for candidates to successfully enter the profession. APU demonstrates quality assurance and evidence that all candidates, completers, and preparation programs meet both the expectations of the state of California as required by CTC and CAEP national standards. The process included a self-study report from APU, followed by feedback from the CTC and CAEP accreditation teams, and a virtual site visit by 16 individuals from CTC and CAEP. APU successfully met each CTC and CAEP standard.

“During our site visit, we had more than 350 students, alumni, district partners, employers, site supervisors, faculty, and staff who participated in more than 90 interview sessions,” said Rebekah Harris, MS, associate dean for academic planning and accreditation in the SOE. “The summative feedback APU received indicates our programs hold high standards, current students and alumni are happy with the support they receive, and employers indicate that APU alumni are very well prepared to begin careers as educational professionals.”

APU is the only Minority Serving Institution in California to receive national recognition from CAEP. APU is also one of only five Minority Serving Institutions in the U.S. selected to be part of Cohort 3 in Branch Alliance for Educator’s Diversity National Teacher Preparation Transformation Center. This partnership aims to produce highly effective and diverse teachers through increased collaboration across educator preparation programs and with school district partners, including APU’s P-12 partner Azusa Unified School District (AUSD). Through participation in the Transformation Center, APU faculty and AUSD partners access resources and professional development, share data, and learn from each other to move forward with sustainability and innovation.

“I am continually impressed by our faculty’s hard work, dedication and passion for education, and their commitment to the values and mission of APU,” said Marjorie Graham-Howard, PhD, interim dean of the SOE. “I am so proud that the SOE is one of only three universities in California to have successfully navigated national accreditation.”

The SOE is comprised of experienced faculty, 100 percent of whom are skilled practitioner-researchers. The school’s dedicated faculty have a tremendous impact on student success and 96.2 percent of graduates report being effectively prepared by their program, which is eight percent higher than the state average. In addition, 95 percent of graduates report being employed in the field of education in their first year following graduation. Many of these graduates are employed by institutions in the more than 150 school districts that APU partners with across Southern California.

APU Theater Presents William Shakespeare’s

The show runs from February 8-24 with Thursday, Friday, and Saturday performances at 7:30 p.m., as well as Saturday matinee shows at 2 p.m. The production takes place in the Warehouse Theater, located on APU’s West Campus, at 701 E. Foothill Blvd. in Azusa. Free parking is available. General admission tickets cost $21, with discounted tickets for senior citizens, children, students, and alumni. Romp, romance, and potential catastrophe collide in William Shakespeare’s fast-moving and irresistibly hilarious and energetic comedy. Sworn to a solo life, Beatrice and Benedick are each determined to evade Cupid’s quiver of arrows, employing rapier wit against one another to defend what everyone else already knows, that they are hopelessly, desperately in love. Much Ado About Nothing is directed by Kristi Papailler who also directed APU’s production of Trojan Women in 2022.

Much Ado About Nothing is a timeless, humorous and centuries old story of love, betrayal and the triumph of good over evil,” said Papailler. “These themes are ever-present in our lives today. This production’s conceptual setting of 1991 Battery Park City, a chic Manhattan neighborhood, places audience members in a contemporary and perhaps familiar landscape to enjoy the adventures of the beloved Hero, Claudio, Beatrice, Benedick and company.”

News Release: APU Honors The Chosen’s Jonathan Roumie with Inspirational Artist Award

On Fri., Feb. 16, Azusa Pacific University honored acclaimed actor Jonathan Roumie, best known for his portrayal of Jesus in the TV drama, The Chosen, with the 2024 Inspirational Artist Award. APU welcomed Roumie to campus for a special day-long visit where he spoke in chapel, attended a luncheon in his honor, and met with theater students.

“Jonathan exemplifies the power of the arts to shine God’s light. He makes a significant impact on other artists as well as his fans around the world,” said Adam J. Morris, PhD, APU president. “For our students studying the arts, Jonathan is an example of what it means to be an artist in the industry, exceptional at his craft, who does not define himself by fame or by celebrity, but by his relationship with God. It is for these reasons that we recognize him with the 2024 Inspirational Artist Award.”

Roumie has garnered critical success and inspired viewers across the globe with his authentic and human depiction of Jesus in The Chosen. The faith-based drama grew from a crowdsourced television series about the life and ministry of Jesus and His followers to amass more than 110 million viewers in 175 countries. Season four premieres this February. A devout Catholic, Roumie told the Christian Post, “I think if I had experienced success much earlier in my career, I wouldn’t have appreciated it in this way, and I most certainly wouldn’t have developed the faith that I have now.” Roumie said that the longer he plays Jesus, the greater his thirst to learn more about the Son of God. His other credits include playing hippie street preacher Lonnie Frisbee in the 2023 motion picture Jesus Revolution, which was Lionsgate Studios largest-grossing domestic film in three years. He partners with Hallow, the number one prayer app in the world. A new docuseries about Roumie, titled Jonathan and Jesus, currently airs on Amazon Prime.

“I couldn’t do this without Him,” said Roumie as he accepted the award. “Psalm 115 comes to mind: ‘Not unto us, oh Lord, not unto us, but unto thy name give glory.’ I’m completely honored and so grateful. Thank you, and God bless you.”

Roumie was a featured guest in APU’s morning chapel service where he spoke about his career and faith with more than 1,200 students, faculty, staff, and special guests in attendance. An awards luncheon in his honor followed where the university recognized his professional achievements and worldwide influence as a Christian artist, presenting him with the 2024 Inspirational Artist Award.

“I reached out to Jonathan and shared APU theater arts’ mission to train students to be excellent at their craft so they can go out into the world as ambassadors for Christ,” said Jill Lincoln, MA, chair and associate professor in the Department of Theater Arts. “I also shared our deep appreciation for the impact he is having for Christ globally and invited him to APU to meet with our aspiring Christian artist and we are thrilled he said yes.”

APU’S theater students had the unique opportunity to host Roumie for a special workshop where he shared his story, provided them with helpful advice, and encouraged them to pursue their dreams. He shared his personal experience as a struggling artist, encouraging them to surrender their careers to God and put Him first.

“Strategically located next to the entertainment capital of the world, Los Angeles, APU students, alumni, and faculty are found at every level of the film, television, music, recording, and arts industries,” said John Simons, DMA, interim dean of the School of the Arts. “Jonathan’s successful career and his desire to work with our APU students and faculty demonstrates the integration of the arts and reflects APU’s unique industry connection and collaboration amongst our theater, cinematic arts, art, music, and design departments.”
