10 activities for your mental health.

Enjoy a view of Marys Peak after crossing Oak Creek via this historic bridge. Start on campus, head west, and you’ll stroll past cows, sheep, and maybe even an egret. You’ll go from campus to country quickly. It’s easy to forget the daily grind with this walk.

  1. Avery Park
This park is a hop away from the southern edge of campus. Cross over the Marys River and take the first dirt path on your right to escape to a short riverside walk. Disconnect from the daily grind to stop and enjoy the rose garden or lay out a blanket on one of the many fields.
  2. College Hill neighborhood
Just north of campus is a little pocket of history. Transport to a different time with these tree lined streets and houses from the early 1900s. As you walk further from campus, the houses get newer and styles change. Check the corner sidewalks for date stamps as you travel through time. The city of Corvallis has created a self-guided walking tour.

  1. Classic walk through campus: the 2 quads
Whether it’s your first  or 500th time walking through the heart of campus, it’s breathtaking. Stroll through when you’re not rushing to your next class to enjoy the rhodies, the trees, and whatever else happens to show up: a cute puppy, a game of cricket or a beautiful sunset.
  2. Downtown mural project
A little bit further from campus than our other destinations. Take the Gateway Walk near Champinefu Lodge to head downtown. Get lost in tracking down all the murals, either by following the Corvallis Mural Project map or challenging yourself to find them on your own.

Surrounding Area

  1. Fitton Green
This short escape into nature will make you instantly feel happy. Fitton Green is the perfect place to look out onto the city while being surrounded by wildflowers. Bring a walking buddy or your friendly four-legged friend and enjoy some time to clear your mind.
  2. Old growth and new growth trail
Surround yourself with tall trees and hear the wind whistle through the leaves. This trail, located in the heart of the McDonald-Dunn Forest, is a perfect escape on a busy day. You’ll find people running or walking while they take in the views.
  3. Witham Hill Natural Area
A little hidden loop in North Corvallis full of old forest and abandoned orchards. This trail is short and doesn’t take much time out of your schedule. It’s the perfect place to go for a quick breather during lunch or right after class or labs to clear your head.

Meet Cedar: Oregon State’s resident wellness dog.

There’s just something about petting a friendly dog that immediately makes your stress melt away. At Oregon State, Cedar is the perfect pup for the job.

A member of the public safety team, the nearly 2-year-old black Lab is known on campus as a wellness dog. That means Cedar is there to provide comfort and stress relief for students, community members and his public safety colleagues. He is smart and incredibly calm, loves ice cubes and the occasional apple or carrot treat. His only real dislike is elevators, although he has come a long way in overcoming his fear of them.

But one of Cedar’s most impressive traits is his intuition.

Cedar is very aware of people’s feelings — and is immediately ready to jump in and provide relief. During a campus summer camp, he helped soothe a child who was experiencing an emotional crisis. She had run away from her group and over the railroad tracks, and she wasn’t willing to talk to anyone until Cedar greeted her and showed he could be trusted. After that, the child’s anxiety lowered significantly and she was calm enough to answer questions.

In his day-to-day life, Cedar consistently checks in on his colleagues as well. Whenever they have a stressful phone call or a hard day, he tends to pop his head in their office or sleep nearby — just so they know he is there.

Where does Cedar spend most of his time?

Cedar’s home is the Department of Public Safety. And because this department is open seven days per week, he has company full time.

His day begins when the night shift switches to day shift, and the entire public safety team is in the same room for just a few moments. He greets each person as they come in, sits in on department meetings and chases the ball down a long hallway. He takes walks through campus and even goes on patrol with public safety officers.

In addition to his daily schedule, Cedar also participates in several events. He visits the library during finals week to give students a break, makes an appearance at end-of-year picnics and attends community events like the CARDV 5K — a fundraiser to end domestic violence.

Because he works hard — just like any other staff member — Cedar gets days off too. The entire DPS team cares for Cedar as a unit, and they share the responsibility of taking him home with them.

A perfect fit

OSU Chief of Police Shanon Anderson says bringing Cedar to campus has been invaluable for the public safety team. She says much of their work can be both physically and emotionally taxing. Cedar gives them a way to offload their stress, so they can do their jobs effectively and go home without carrying stress with them. In addition, Cedar gives students and community members a moment of pause in their daily lives — to simply enjoy the moment and let their worries fade away.

“He wants to be everywhere and anywhere people are, all the time,” says Darin Campbell, executive director for Working Dogs Oregon, which placed Cedar at OSU. “Cedar is an incredibly social and happy boy.”

Cedar has found a great deal of joy in his Corvallis family. And it’s safe to say the feeling is mutual.

Interested in meeting Cedar?

If you’d like to have Cedar visit an event, or would simply like to spend some time with him, send an email to DPS. Cedar’s calendar tends to book up quickly, so advance notice is appreciated.

Educators help our children succeed. We’re doing the same for them.

Children need support to thrive — and so do the people who care for, educate and guide them at a young age. Thanks to a new $14.4 million grant from the Oregon Department of Education Early Learning Division, Oregon State University is launching the Early Learning Systems Initiative to strengthen the early childhood education workforce statewide.

Located within the university’s Hallie E. Ford Center for Children and Families, the initiative will focus on better serving children from marginalized communities and those who have experienced trauma. This begins with enhanced training that give educators the tools to meet children’s needs, prevent issues like preschool expulsion and reduce teacher burnout.

Megan McClelland, director of the Hallie Ford Center and principal investigator on the grant, says the need for a new training format partially stems from the aftereffects of the COVID-19 pandemic: the current workforce is facing low wages, high turnover and lack of professional development opportunities. In addition, every county in Oregon has now been reported as a child care desert for children between the ages of 3 and 5, with at least three children per available slot.

McClelland adds that federal data (PDF) from 2014 showed Black preschool students were 3.6 times more likely than white students to receive out-of-school suspensions. A 2020 statewide household study (PDF) shows that 6.3% of all children were asked to leave their child care programs, with higher rates among children of color and children with disabilities.

The Early Learning Systems Initiative will remedy some of these common issues by focusing on anti-racist, anti-bias and culturally responsive education that helps increase inclusivity and acceptance — and decrease behavioral issues in the classroom. Children who have experienced trauma are more likely to act out, so educators will learn how to de-escalate moments of high stress as soon as they occur. Built as a train-the-trainers model, the center will work directly with coaches who can then take what they’ve learned and share it with early childhood educators in their own communities around the state, teaching them about trauma-informed and strengths-based teaching models.

Oregon State is partnering with Portland State University, Western Oregon University and the Early Learning Division, and the Early Learning Systems Initiative will emulate an Early Childhood Suspension and Expulsion Prevention Program that is also in the works.

By meeting the needs of both children and educators, Oregon State and its partners will create a rewarding experience for all — in and out of the classroom.

To celebrate Black history, first it must be told.

When you need some quick information about a topic, chances are you’ll look it up on Wikipedia. But this crowdsourced online encyclopedia has been criticized for racial bias, and people of color are underrepresented among its editors and contributors. Which means their stories aren’t told, and Wikipedia has large gaps in the history of African Americans and others who have been marginalized.

So two librarians and an archivist at Oregon State University, Laurie Bridges, Diana Park and Tiah Edmunson-Morton, set out to fill those gaps.

In partnership with AfroCROWD (Afro Free Culture Crowdsourcing Wikimedia), the Oregon State team has led a series of “edit-a-thons” to write African American history into Wikipedia, focusing on the people and history of the Pacific Northwest. One of several OSU events celebrating Black History Month, the 2022 edit-a-thon will be held Feb. 25 in the Valley Library and via Zoom. The event is open to everyone, but registration is required.

The 2022 event will build on past progress. At edit-a-thons in 2019, 2020 and 2021, OSU Libraries staff, students and volunteers have updated and revised 162 articles. Editors have added or expanded entries on early Black settlers in Oregon, journalists and newspapers serving the African American community in Portland. New entries have been created for Portland’s historically Black Albina district, the Urban League of Portland and Roosevelt Credit, a 1990 Oregon State music education alumnus who has appeared on Broadway.

In addition to its partnership with AfroCROWD, organizers also received support from several OSU organizations, including the Educational Opportunities Program, Diversity and Cultural Engagement, Lonnie B. Harris Black Cultural Center and Hattie Redmond Women and Gender Center.

“Oregon has a racist history that directly impacts the lack of information available in sources like Wikipedia,” wrote Park in a 2021 library newsletter. “This local history is not well known, even among residents of the Pacific Northwest. Adding information about African American history, and other marginalized communities, is an act of social justice.”

Animals will not be forgotten, even in disaster. Not on our watch.

Multiple wildfires ravaged Oregon in September 2020, giving residents mere minutes to gather their families, a few valuables and their pets. The flames spread so quickly, many had to leave their livestock and other animals behind.

That’s when Oregon State University jumped into action.

A team of veterinarians, veterinary technicians, staff and students from the Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine, OSU Extension Service staff and more than 90 volunteers evacuated hundreds of animals — cattle, chickens, rabbits, llamas, pigs and horses — to county fairgrounds across the state. Most were rescued early enough to avoid any serious harm, with veterinary staff and students attending to minor injuries from transport, smoke inhalation and stress.

OSU Extension employees worked day and night to prepare barns and buildings for the influx of evacuated animals, while others headed out on the road to bring in even more. Jared Delay, a 4-H education program assistant in Clatsop County, led a caravan of 11 trucks and trailers that evacuated 213 animals in Clackamas, Marion, Linn and Washington counties — including a boar weighing in at 1,200 pounds. Delay’s crew traveled 4,248 miles in just four days.

Back at the fairgrounds, volunteers delivered food and water, soothed stressed animals, set up bedding and helped track the location of incoming animals, while Oregon State veterinarians and staff went far beyond their call of duty. In addition to managing regular clients, they made twice-daily visits to the Benton County fairgrounds and checked in daily in Linn County. They also traveled to makeshift shelters on residents’ properties, all while having their phones and extra vehicles at the ready for additional emergencies.

Helping out when disaster strikes, with both expertise and a get-it-done attitude, is part of our land grant mission to work for Oregon and all its inhabitants — including the four-legged ones.

“One of the defining characteristics of OSU Extension is our strong bond with the counties in which we work. Assisting in these wildfire relief efforts is a natural fit for us, and it’s consistent with our mission to serve all Oregonians.”

Anita Azarenko | Interim Vice Provost and Director
OSU Extension Service

OSU wildfire response efforts received two generous gifts:

  • $10,000 from the American Veterinary Medical Foundation
  • $7,500 from the United States Equestrian Federation Equine Disaster Relief Fund

Additional gifts of any amount may be given at vetmed.oregonstate.edu.

Seasonal foods celebrate the relationship Indigenous peoples share with the land, including their knowledge of ecosystems and ecoregions. Ingredients like winter squash have been an important part of Indigenous cultures for thousands of years. In addition to serving as a main part of many dishes, squash also have several other uses. For example, the hardened skins can be hollowed out and used as ceremonial decorations or storage containers. And the dried strips of squash can also be used to weave mats.

Chef Nephi Craig, who partners with OSU Extension’s Indigenous Peoples Workgroup and the Food Hero Program, is a member of White Mountain Apache and Diné tribes and is founder of The Native American Culinary Association. He works to educate others about Indigenous foods, preserve their history and share recipes with the world.

Craig’s recipes are also featured at foodhero.org:

Take your winter cooking up a notch – and grow your own food

Beginning in January, individuals, households, groups and teachers can sign up to receive free seeds through Food Hero’s Grow This! Challenge. Each will be delivered by mail and include a mix of herb and vegetable seeds, as well as flowers that are attractive to pollinators. A monthly email will also be provided, with growing, harvesting and preparation tips.

No yard? No problem. Grow a thriving container garden.

Spring has officially begun, and many of us are starting to get the itch for the scent of fresh flowers and the taste of homegrown fruits and veggies. If you’re interested in digging into some gardening but have never tried it before, are short on outdoor space or simply want to try a new planting method that requires less setup, container gardening is a great option.

When should I prepare and plant my container garden?

Now is a great time to begin looking for starter plants, as most garden stores, nurseries and Saturday markets will be stocked up this time of year.

However, when it comes to planting, you’ll want to wait until temperatures warm up at night to avoid exposure to frost. As a baseline, make sure your soil is at least 50 degrees F for cool season vegetables. For warm season crops (like tomatoes) wait until the soil is at least 60 degrees F. Typically, the Willamette Valley will see these temperatures around the end of April or early May. Although overnight frosts can still occur later in the year in other parts of Oregon.

1.  Choose a container

The best thing about container gardening is that you can essentially use any vessel: a terra cotta pot, a decorative planter or even recycled plastic like large yogurt containers or buckets from home improvement stores. Just make sure your container is at least eight inches deep.

No matter which container you choose, just remember to check for a drain hole. If there isn’t one, you can easily add one using a small drill. Or, if you don’t want to worry about drilling, place a plastic container (with a drain hole) inside a decorative pot and lift it to let the water out.

A few thoughts to consider when choosing your container:

  • Terra cotta pots are good for plants that like a drier environment because the clay allows water to easily evaporate.
  • Glazed pottery tends to hold in moisture well, but it can be heavy — something to consider if you plan to move in the near future.
  • When using recycled containers, make sure to avoid those that have previously held detergents or chemicals. And don’t forget to thoroughly wash your recyclables before planting.
  • Barrels work well for plants like trees and small shrubs, but they can also be on the heavy side.

2.  Decide what to grow

  • Many garden centers carry edible plants that are designed to stay small, like patio raspberries, zucchini, strawberries and bush cucumbers.
  • Compact and determinant tomatoes, lettuce and peppers also grow well in containers, and they grow to a size that is easy to maintain.
  • Herbs are easy to care for and add extra zip to a meal, dessert or drink.
    • Grab a living basil or parsley plant from the grocery store and place it in your container with some fresh soil.
    • Perennials like chives, oregano, thyme, rosemary and sage will come back every year, which makes them even more worthwhile.
  • You can also try a climbing plant, like pole beans or peas. Simply attach a low-cost trellis to your container and watch them ascend.
  • Scented geraniums (their aromas include coconut, nutmeg, rose, citrus and more) can add an extra element to your patio or porch.

3.  Keep these care tips in mind:

  • When the weather gets hot, containers tend to heat up faster than outdoor gardens since they are not insulated by the ground. Make sure to keep them well watered (2-3 times per day) during the summer months. Or move them out of the hot afternoon sun to avoid damaging the roots.
  • The larger the container, the better your plants will grow. Don’t be afraid to give them some space.
  • Containers lose nutrients quickly. Use liquid fertilizer weekly or add a slow release fertilizer. Follow the instructions on the container.

Research can take you far — even as far as Antarctica.

Giulia Wood did not have a typical summer in 2022. For her, it was winter and included polar plunges, cracking glaciers and studying Antarctic krill.

The honors biochemistry and molecular biology major in the College of Science was part of Kim Bernard’s all-women research team studying how juvenile krill behave during the winter.

It’s a world most know only through books and documentaries, “untouchable until you are here,” Wood says.

Upon arriving on a U.S. Antarctic Program research vessel, Bernard’s team spent several days in Wilhelmina Bay and the Gerlache Strait to catch the krill needed for their research. They spent the first night searching for 10 hours to no avail.

The next day was magic. After receiving a one-word text, “krill,” Wood made a hectic dash to the vessel’s acoustics computer to help the crew reach an aggregation of krill. When she stepped back on deck, the crew was crouched over coolers filled with the tiny crustaceans.

“You could feel this energy in the air, this indescribable joy that we had done it,” Wood says. “It was a pretty spectacular moment.”

Originally from Washington’s San Juan Islands, Wood chose Oregon State University for its many undergraduate research opportunities, and she started pursuing them immediately. In her first year, Wood joined the Forest Animal Ecology Lab in the College of Forestry through the URSA Engage program in the Office of Undergraduate Research Scholarship and the Arts. She spent her second year in the United Kingdom, looking at sediment cores in a geography lab. Returning to Corvallis, she started looking for projects that piqued her curiosity.

Kim Bernard’s Zooplankton Ecology Lab in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences stood out. It was also looking for undergraduates, and Wood quickly joined the team.

In Antarctica, she helped study how diet affects krill respiration, growth rate, lipid content and other factors. Krill can not only shrink, but they may also regress in sexual maturity as energy-saving techniques to survive harsh winter conditions.

Climate change has impacted the availability of food for krill. Reduced sea ice is also a problem since krill use it as a feeding location due to the algae underneath and the higher concentration of food sources.

“Krill are very much being impacted by climate change, and they are a critical part of the marine food system here,” Wood says.

Back for her senior year at OSU, Wood is grateful she pushed herself to try new experiences, develop research skills and explore potential career paths. Don’t let doubt get in the way of opportunities, she advises. The opportunities can take you far — even to the ends of the Earth.

Driven by her vision for a better world.

It’s an idea that motivates Elizabeth “Lizzy” Ragan, ’13, every day. In 2019, a climbing accident left her paralyzed from the chest down. But she didn’t let this life-altering event stop her. Instead, she’s focusing on issues that matter most to her: creating a more equitable health care system and building awareness about accessibility for people with disabilities — in the workplace, in public spaces and in the outdoors.

Ragan’s perseverance is evident. Following her graduation from Oregon State, the College of Public Health and Human Sciences alumna’s work has focused on infectious diseases and how they are intertwined with poverty and equity. At Boston Medical Center, she managed a program to address the issues of accessibility to COVID-19 vaccines and care for underrepresented communities. In addition, she worked with the medical center’s leadership to develop an institutional biorepository — a collection of samples including blood, urine, tissue, cells, DNA and proteins — to assist with pandemic response research.

“What gets me up in the morning is a desire to play my part in figuring out how to ensure all people have an equal chance at living healthy lives,” she says. Having had to adapt to a new normal herself, she encourages others to find confidence in their own strength.

“I always tell people you really don’t know how strong you are until you’re faced with adversity,” she says. “And I bet you that you’d surprise yourself.”

In 2022, Ragan received another opportunity to work toward her goals when she was chosen as a White House Fellow in the Office of Science and Technology Policy. In this role, Ragan is supporting The American Pandemic Preparedness Plan, which includes initiatives to prepare U.S. clinical trials infrastructure to take on another widespread disease outbreak like COVID-19. This plan essentially works to get ahead of issues like vaccine creation before they may be needed.

Ragan says she is honored to be selected for this once-in-a-lifetime experience, especially as a person with a disability. Previously, employees with disabilities made up only 1.1% of the federal workforce in the executive branch.

Beyond helping people with disabilities see themselves working in places like the White House, Ragan is working to increase opportunities for outdoor activities like adaptive cycling. An avid mountain biker before and after her accident, Ragan emphasizes even the smallest changes can make a trail easier for people with adaptive equipment to use, like creating wider trails or making sure there is enough space to maneuver between large logs. With the help of groups like the Northwest Trail Alliance, she has found others who are dedicated to making these changes happen.

Ragan believes everyone can work to become better allies for people with disabilities by making sure they have a seat at the table and that their lived experiences are considered. Representation matters, she says, and the more we educate ourselves about the issues people with disabilities face, the better we’ll be at solving problems together.

Once her one-year fellowship is complete, Ragan plans to use this White House experience as a springboard to her next great adventure. And this spring, she will cross one item off her list: racing in the hand cycling division of the Boston Marathon.

Ragan’s ambition and empathy are undeniable. She has blazed the trail for so many — now it’s our turn to join the cause.

My Ph.D. dissertation research on advanced food packaging technologies originally led me to the world of packaging. However, learning about the possibilities of edible packaging truly inspired me to work in the field. Over a two-decade-long research journey, my scope of study has been significantly expanded beyond just edible packaging to other sustainable solutions that reduce packaging’s impact on the environment and provide convenience and health benefits to consumers.

The imperative needs and enormous opportunities to improve today’s packaging system motivate me to continuously innovate in sustainable packaging with new discoveries. Having received a great deal of support during my time at OSU, I also feel motivated to invest more time and energy into mentoring, supporting and developing faculty and students at all levels.

We can do better to protect our environment and ecosystem by replacing plastic packaging with more sustainable solutions. Edible packaging not only results in zero packaging waste, but it can also provide additional benefits to food and consumers. Food and agricultural biowaste can be utilized to create edible, biodegradable and/or compostable packaging. Most importantly, OSU’s technological innovations can play a role in promoting a more sustainable future.

The potential to turn trash into treasure — converting the biowaste and byproducts generated from food manufacturing and agricultural production into high-value products. While my lab has developed a series of technologies to convert cellulose fiber-based biowaste into functional food ingredients and packaging materials, more needs to be done to reach zero waste — not only to reduce the environmental impact but also to provide economic benefits to the food and agriculture industry.
