Little Caesars is coming to WSU Pullman in 2025

Little Caesars has partnered with Washington State University’s Dining Services to open a serving location in the Compton Union Building (CUB) food court in the spring. A grand opening date will be announced later as the space it will occupy may need renovations.

“We are very excited to bring a nationally recognized pizza brand to the food court and believe it will be very popular with our students,” said Karee Shaw, director of the CUB. “It will complement the other concepts we have in the food court and offer variety to the campus community.”

Core to the mission of Student Affairs, students helped select Little Caesars. The CUB Student Advisory Board weighed in on the selection of the new vendor and WSU students were involved in menu taste tests to help make the final decisions.

Plans to open a Little Caesars at WSU are part of an accelerated expansion of restaurants designed to meet the demand for flexible options and the growing preference for convenient dining. At WSU, the food concept will be managed by WSU Dining Services, which also runs Freshëns and Carlitas in the CUB.

“We are thrilled to bring Little Caesars to the Washington State University campus, offering students, faculty, and staff a convenient, affordable, and delicious meal option,” said Patrick Cunningham, vice president of U.S. Development at Little Caesars. “As we continue to expand our footprint across the country, it’s exciting to be part of the vibrant campus life at WSU and serve the Coug community with our iconic Hot-N-Ready® pizzas and exceptional guest service.”

Disabled Student Center poised for growth after first year

Senior Trina McConnell is one of the many students who have benefited from the Disabled Student Center on the Washington State University Pullman campus during its first year of operation. She said it is a valuable space where students are connecting with others, finding and sharing resources, and socializing in a place they feel safe.

That is exactly what the working group under the direction of the vice chancellor for Student Affairs envisioned in 2023 when it came together to explore the feasibility of establishing the center. The center opened its doors in the Washington Building that summer and will officially celebrate its first anniversary from 3–5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17, exactly one year since holding its grand opening. The WSU community is invited to drop by the center in room 223, enjoy snacks, and visit with staff and students.

“I think the biggest accomplishment for the center so far has been that students, whether they have a visible or invisible disability, feel it is a place on campus where they can be themselves,” said Roberto Morales, associate director of student services at the Access Center. “We look forward to hearing ideas from others about where the center can grow from here.”

Forging partnerships across campus

The center is staffed by a part-time coordinator, an assistant student coordinator, and three Cougar Compass mentors. McConnell is serving as both the assistant student coordinator and a Compass Mentor. She said the space has been invaluable for providing a place where the mentors can meet with their mentees.

The center is also a place where students are engaging with faculty and staff. Morales said center staff have forged partnerships with departments such as the Academic Success and Career Center, Student Financial Aid, the Residence Life Social Justice Committee, and the Dean of Students Office care team, which have conducted workshops or held office hours in the center.

While there have been many successes, Morales and McConnell said more work lies ahead before the center realizes its full potential. Not only would staff like to see more students utilize the space but want allies to know they are welcome in the center too. McConnell said staff are still determining what kinds of programming students would like to see on a consistent basis and are continually working to gather student feedback. On her wish list for next year are more resources for outreach efforts, healthier snacks in the center, and front-desk staff.

McConnell said students may not be aware or fully appreciate that WSU is on the cutting edge when it comes to providing a center for disabled students, but she recognizes it is making a positive difference in her life.

“Some days I come into the center feeling rotten and socially anxious,” McConnell said. “After I’ve had a chance to interact with the students and staff there, I always leave in a much better mood.”

Navigators connect students with the resources they need

When the Washington Student Achievement Council (WSAC) allocated Washinton State University $480,000 in 2023 to help support students experiencing food insecurity, Heather Case, assistant dean of students on the Pullman campus, did not think it was going to be difficult to find students to take the money.

“When we began emailing students about the funding, a lot of them thought it was a scam,” Case said. “They thought it was too good to be true and ignored our emails.”

Now Case has a person on staff, Annalei Santos, to add a more personal touch to the outreach effort. In fact, several WSU campuses — in Pullman, Tri-Cities, and Vancouver — have created positions called basic needs (benefits) navigators to help connect students experiencing houselessness, food insecurity, or childcare challenges, with WSU, county, and state resources that can help them.

“We noticed the number of students applying for emergency funding went up again from last year,” said Case. “The need for assistance keeps increasing, and I think these positions will make a significant difference in student persistence.”

State steps up its support

The basic needs navigator positions are funded by multiple sources including WSAC grants created to address housing and food security.

A Washington Student Experience Survey administered by WSAC in 2022 found that nearly half of all college students across Washington experienced some form of basic needs insecurity. One in three students surveyed experienced food insecurity or housing insecurity, and one in 10 students experienced houselessness in the past 12 months. The survey will be conducted again Oct. 28 to Nov. 22 and all WSU students will be encouraged to participate.

WSU Pullman’s allocation of $480,000 over two years (and a commitment for additional third-year funding) is being used to support first-year, low-income or Washington Application for State Financial Aid (WASFA) students living in the residence halls.

Geology alumnus to serve as keynote speaker for Cougs in Space

A Washington State University alumnus, Matt Brzostowski, will deliver the keynote for Cougs in Space, a two-day event for students in engineering, business, research, sciences, innovation, and others to connect with alumni and employers in related space industry fields. The event, which begins this Tuesday at noon, is a joint collaboration between the Academic Success and Career Center, the College of Arts and Sciences, the Carson College of Business, the Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture, and the Cougs in Space Club.

“It’s an honor to be invited to participate in Cougs in Space. It’s important for people with experience to talk with those just starting out—to educate, to share my experience in hope that maybe something I’ve done, others can learn from,” said Brzostowski.

From the age of 11, Brzostowski knew he wanted to be a scientist and an astronaut. After earning his PhD in Texas, he pursued opportunities to engage with scientists and programs at NASA supporting the mission, and always striving towards his goal of becoming an astronaut.

During his time in Texas, Brzostowski volunteered on projects that involved developing a geophysical system to image the near surface of the Moon or Mars. He worked with Yosio Nakamura in properly decoding and reformatting decades old seismic data from the Apollo missions, identifying a serious timing error leading to new accurate interpretations.

Eventually receiving an astronaut candidate interview with NASA, Brzostowski was one of four geoscientists in contention for the next mission to the moon. Government administration changes, however, altered the mission but not his dream to serve as a contributing member on a future mission.

Brzostowski’s Cougs in Space address aims to encourage students to seek out opportunities beyond the classroom and later beyond the office—to use personal time to develop skills and relationships that will prepare and move them closer to fulfilling their dreams.

Brzostowski graduated in 1980 with a BA in geology from WSU and later received his PhD in geosciences from the University of Texas at Dallas. Prior to retiring four years ago, he served for 40 years as a geophysicist on the industry side working with businesses to explore, problem solve, and identify potential economic benefits.

Endowment supports cataloging of world’s longest diary

Robert Shields liked to chronicle what he read, often describing exactly what newspapers, books, or magazines he read each day. His prodigious diary—all 37.5 million words worth—contains many quotations from literature, the Bible, and other notable works.

Washington State University Manuscripts Librarian Will Gregg is just starting to catalog the typewritten life’s work of the Dayton, Washington resident, businessman, minister, and teacher.

The Shields collection is remarkable as not just the longest diary of its kind but as a detailed record of an ordinary family, Gregg said. Much of the documentation preserved in archives is associated with an event or person of lasting political or cultural importance. Records of everyday life are not as common.

“For that reason, Robert Shields’ minute-by-minute diary provides a unique account of everyday life in our region for nearly 30 years and gives us a way of seeing historical events through different eyes,” Gregg said. “We hope that the collection will appeal to people in several disciplines at WSU and elsewhere.”

The cataloging work was made possible with the Robert and Grace Shields Library Endowment, which the husband and wife established when Shields donated his diary in 1999. The diary is collected in 96 boxes in WSU Libraries’ Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections. Shields asked that his work be closed until both he and his wife died. Shields passed away in 2007 and his wife, in April 2024.

The $245,253 endowment will primarily be used to process, index, and house Shields’ diary as well as other related costs. When that process is complete, the remainder of the endowment will support other MASC needs, including the enrichment of collections, specialized library equipment, and support for visiting speakers.

Gregg said the Shields collection is not only large but also complex: In addition to the diary for which he is known, Shields included photographs, letters, books, pamphlets, receipts, and even a pair of eyeglasses. Preparing the collection will entail sorting content into several major groups or “series,” moving the material into archival-quality boxes and preparing a well-researched guide to the collection that will inform readers about its contents as well as its overall scope and historical background. (A preliminary guide to the Shields papers is located on the Archives West-Orbis Cascade Alliance website.)

Anyone interested in working with the collection is asked to make an appointment with MASC.

Well remembered in his town

Shields and Grace had three daughters, all of whom attended and graduated from WSU: eldest Cornelia Shields (1984, English, history minor) and identical twins Klara Shields Hicks (1985, psychology, speech communications minor) and Heidi Shields (1985, zoology, French minor). Cornelia owns a publishing company. Hicks is an attorney with the U.S. Postal Service, and Heidi practices family medicine at Saint Alphonsus Nampa Hospital in Idaho.

Professor Cousins’ active research program focuses on relationships between plant traits and photosynthetic efficiency across diverse species in both natural and managed environments. He is involved with an international consortium of researchers as part of a Gates Foundation sponsored project to supercharge photosynthesis in rice to help address the world’s growing food needs. An additional area of research, funded through the US Department of Energy and Agriculture, investigates enhancing photosynthesis and resource-use efficiency in key crops grown in marginal soils and under drought.

“As a leading researcher whose work holds global scale implications, Cousins’ role as director is of great service to SBS, his colleagues, and students. His foundation as a dedicated educator and collaborative researcher positions him to lead the next chapter for SBS,” said Courtney Meehan, College of Arts and Sciences interim dean.

Professor Cousins earned a BS in botany from California State University Chico and a PhD in plant biology from Arizona State University. Prior to WSU, he was a postdoc at the University of California Davis and an NSF International Postdoc Fellow at the Australian National University. He succeeds Patrick Carter, who served seven years as the SBS director.

WSU unveils campaign for new Plant Growth Facility to improve tree fruit research

WENATCHEE, Wash. — Washington State University will launch a fundraising campaign this fall to create a state-of-the-art space for tree fruit research: the new Plant Growth Facility at the Wenatchee Tree Fruit Research and Extension Center (TFREC).

Sharing the impact and need for the future facility, tree fruit scientists and college leaders host a campaign kick-off, 3:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29, at Wenatchee TFREC. This event is open to the public.

The modern Plant Growth Facility will replace a 70-year-old structure, enhancing WSU scientists’ ability to conduct research vital to Washington’s $10 billion tree fruit industry. A new facility will enable sophisticated environmental stress experiments, year-round disease research, root health tests, and pest-free plant growth, ensuring ongoing innovation serving Washington tree fruit. The modern space will also help attract and retain top scientists and students.

“This facility will make projects possible that we simply can’t do now,” said Lee Kalcsits, endowed chair in Environmental Tree Fruit Physiology and Management. “It’s a leveraging opportunity: it opens a whole set of doors for impact on industry.”

With double the existing greenhouse space, modern lighting, and temperature and humidity controls, the Plant Growth Facility will allow for exclusion in experiments demanding isolation of environmental conditions, pests, or pathogens.

For WSU Pome Fruit Breeder Kate Evans, it would support expanded screening of breeding material for diseases including orchard-devastating fire blight, as well as room for broader research on new rootstocks.

“We do a good job of maximizing the facilities we have, but there’s a limit,” Evans said. “With the greenhouses, we’re way beyond it. The new growth facility will give our internationally renowned programs a way to expand into areas we’ve simply been stymied from entering.”

To complete the project, the research center team aims to raise $4.2 million in private funds. Contributions will directly support research and solutions tailored to the needs of Northwest tree fruit.

“The vision for the new plant growth facility is a place where the top researchers, teachers, and Extension personnel come together to address the on-the-ground problems of today and the emerging threats of tomorrow,” said Wendy Powers, Cashup Davis Family Endowed Dean of WSU’s College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences. “Located in the heart of tree fruit production for the world, this facility puts us out in front to ensure safe, abundant, healthy fruit for everyone.”

In addition to sessions within the Leading as a Coug, Developing as a Coug, and Workday Success Stories tracks, this year’s event also features several cross-track presentations, highlighting how WSU employees, systems, and ideas are connected. These sessions include:

  • A.I. in the Cougar Workplace: A Panel Discussion for WSU Employees
This panel discussion brings together WSU experts and leaders to discuss AI in the university workplace and answer questions about how WSU staff can effectively and ethically leverage AI in their jobs.
  • Onboarding New Employees: Finding Essential Resources
Starting a new job can be overwhelming for both new hires and managers. In this session, learn where to find essential resources and how to effectively guide new employee through their first day, first week, and first 30 days.
  • WSU Org Structure
This session provides an overview of supervisory organization (sup org) structure at WSU, and dives into how sup orgs and Workday security roles inform routing processes.

Over 500 WSU employees have already registered for Elevating Cougs 2024. Registration is currently open and will remain available throughout the conference for those who may choose to attend last-minute. Employees who plan on attending but have not yet registered are encouraged to do so at their earliest convenience, to allow more time to review the conference schedule, bookmark sessions they’re interested in, and explore the Zoom Events platform. Registered attendees may also review these “Know Before You Go” guidelines ahead of the event to learn more about what to expect from the conference experience.

Student group helps create refugee scholarship fund

The Muslim Student Association has partnered with Washington State University to establish a scholarship to support refugee students.

Tahsina Yeasmin (Sarah), president of MSA and a pre-med double major in biology and neuroscience, along with student leaders and WSU leadership worked together over the summer to seek funding for a refugee scholarship.

The student group initially discussed the idea of WSU divesting from businesses connected to military arms used in Gaza. But in a meeting with Mike Connell, vice president for advancement and CEO of WSU Foundation, the group learned that the way WSU Foundation investments are structured, divestment was impractical in principle for their focus, and the discussion pivoted to creating a scholarship.

Kimberly Holapa, senior associate vice chancellor with Student Affairs, said, “It became really evident that our students wanted to focus on the humanitarian aspect as opposed to the political.”

The scholarship will be donor-funded and linked on the WSU Foundation webpage. It will also be highlighted during conversations with donors. The scholarship will support prospective students who are refugees from their home countries. The scholarship will not be limited to one country or group but will focus on prospective students who otherwise wouldn’t have a chance at academia. The hope is to garner enough donations to support at least one refugee student for a full-ride 4-year undergraduate degree, which would require approximately $57,000.

The new scholarship fund is also intended to support and expand WSU’s mission of inclusion and remove the financial barrier to obtaining higher education.

In the past two years, WSU International Programs has helped resettle four families that were refugees from Afghanistan. This scholarship will continue the efforts to make the Pullman campus even more accepting of refugees. Most refugee students who attend WSU typically come in as resident undergrads after seeking refuge in the US as high schoolers, or earlier. WSU has many resources for students fleeing foreign conflict such as the Undocumented Student Center, First Generation Center, Intensive American Language Center, Office of Multicultural Student Services, and the International Center.

Yeasmin said she was encouraged by WSU’s responsiveness and willingness to cooperate and create the scholarship. She said she hopes the funding grows and can afford to cover multiple refugee students’ pursuit of affordable education.

“Student leaders often underestimate the power they have. ‘What can I do, I’m just president of yadda-yadda club,’” she said. “You have a position the university values. The universities are also diverse because of these clubs.”

One scholarship can’t end the issues that lead to displacement, but it can make a huge difference in one student’s life.

“If you want change you have to work for it,” she said.

ITS enhances security measures for Crimson Service Desk requests

Beginning today, Information Technology Services is implementing enhanced security measures in response to a rising number of phishing attempts targeted at the Crimson Service Desk.

Anyone contacting Crimson Service Desk to request password or multi-factor authentication resets will now need to join a Zoom Room session to verify their identification. During the Zoom call, individuals will need to show their WSU Cougar Card, a state or government-issued ID, such as a driver’s license or passport, or a high school ID.

“I understand this is a change that may temporarily slow down your ability to access business resources, teaching, and learning,” Tony Opheim, vice president for Information Technology Services, wrote in an email to the university community. “Unfortunately, this process change is necessary to ensure the security of your personal information.”

The change stems from an increase in attempts to gain unauthorized access to individual network ID accounts by malicious parties calling Crimson Service Desk.

In his email, Opheim provided cybersecurity tips to the WSU community:

  • Do not approve unknown Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) requests: This ensures that even if someone obtains a password, they cannot access an account without the second factor authentication step.
  • Be wary of phishing attempts: Be cautious of unsolicited emails or messages asking for credentials. Always verify the source before clicking on any links or providing personal information. As a reminder, no WSU person, IT staff or otherwise, is authorized to ask for passwords or multi factor passcodes.
  • Secure devices: Keep operating systems and applications updated to protect against vulnerabilities. Use antivirus software and be cautious when connecting to public Wi-Fi networks.
  • Get assistance immediately: If unauthorized access to an account is suspected, immediately notify abuse@wsu.edu.

Questions about cybersecurity practices can be directed to the Crimson Service Desk by calling 509-335-4357 or emailing crimsonservicedesk@wsu.edu.
