Following the Cake on the Lawn event the college will host a free screening of the international documentary War Tails from 5–6:30 p.m. in the Compton Student Union (CUB) Auditorium.

The film, in line with the college’s Rabies Free Africa program mission to eliminate rabies by 2030, investigates the harsh reality faced by more than 1 million homeless pets in Ukraine and the team working to rescue them. As the dedicated veterinarians and volunteers assemble, their mission becomes saving animals and people from rising rabies cases in the war-torn region.

“Rabies is a preventable disease that takes the lives of tens of thousands each year,” said Dean Dori Borjesson. “Vaccinating dogs is not just a local responsibility but a global imperative. By ensuring widespread canine rabies vaccination in Ukraine, Africa and beyond, we can save both animal and human lives and move closer to eradicating this deadly disease on a global scale.”

Dan Fine, producer of the documentary and WSU alumnus, will introduce the film and a Q&A with College of Veterinary Medicine Dean Dori Borjesson, the film’s main subject Khrystyna Drahomaretska, Adam Parascandola from Humane Society International, and Mark Dyce, WSU alumnus and refugee pet volunteer, will follow.

Ceremonial blanket honors relationship between WSU and local Indigenous communities

Yesterday, the Department of History hosted a Blanket Witnessing Ceremony to recognize Washington State University’s relationship with the local Native people and to honor the history of the Pacific Northwest. The ceremony was organized by Ryan Booth, assistant professor, Department of History.

Representatives from the Schitsu’umsh (Coeur d’Alene) Tribe were present to witness and commemorate the moment through participation and speaking in their Indigenous language about the importance of these ceremonial blankets, which are often given in tribal communities as tributes of friendship and to mark important moments and events for the recipient to remember.

“WSU is land-grant institution — it’s on Native land, and therefore, WSU has a special obligation to Native people. I thought the ceremony was particularly important for us to do — to have this moment, to mark and remember and celebrate this relationship, and to build upon this relationship in the future. This blanket represents the long perspective of the relationship that exists between WSU and Northwest tribes,” said Booth.

The ceremony began with a prayer by Reverend Peter Byrne, SJ and followed with a traditional smudge ceremony conducted by CeCe Curtis-Cook. The smudge ceremony involved the burning of sacred plants treated as “medicine” to cleanse the space and provide a blessing. Guests were also welcome to receive a blessing by smudging.

I thought the ceremony was particularly important for us to do — to have this moment, to mark and remember and celebrate this relationship, and to build upon this relationship in the future.Ryan Booth, assistant professor
WSU Department of History

Tribal Elder, Cindy LaDeaux, shared what she teaches to be the value of blankets. “They mean so much. And that meaning is different for different cultures,” said LaDeaux. There is a story behind each one that serves as a reminder, as a lesson, and as a means to connect to one’s history.

The Native designed blanket was presented as a symbolic act of the university’s connection to the Native peoples of the area and to serve as a daily reminder of this reverent relationship. The artist of the blanket is Gail White Eagle (Muckleshoot and Chehalis), and she designed it to honor the elk in a traditional Coast Salish design. Booth intentionally selected the blanket from Snoqualmie Tribe-owned, Eighth Generation, as the business offers 100% Native designed products.

Booth conceived of yesterday’s event following a visit to another university that displayed Native art around the campus. As an Upper Skagit, this artistic representation made him feel welcome on the campus.

“My sincerest hope is that we can create that same sort of feeling at WSU for all students and especially for our Native students,” said Booth.

The blanket currently adorns a wall within the history department’s main office as a daily visual reminder of the local Native American history and experience. “It has Indigenized the space and brought life to this building,” said Booth.

Celebrating joy and growth

The mariachi music pouring out of Kimbrough Hall rehearsal rooms isn’t a recording. It’s one of Washington State University’s newest musical groups, Mariachi Leones del Monte — loosely translated by its members as Cougar Mariachi — practicing on Wednesday evenings.

Many people are familiar with the distinct sound of mariachi: a unique blend of trumpets, violins, and various guitars. Historians believe mariachi originated in Mexico in the eighteenth century. When migrants traveled from Mexico to the United States in the early 1900s to work in the fields, they brought mariachi music.

Today, mariachi music is a staple in agricultural towns throughout central Washington, including Wenatchee, where WSU seniors Natalie Valdez and Daniela Alpire went to high school together. They say it is nearly impossible to attend a birthday party, a wedding, or a graduation without being entertained by a mariachi band. Valdez and Alpire played guitar together in their high school’s mariachi band, where Alpire also sang.

“Practicing and performing mariachi was a big part of our lives,” Alpire says. “When Natalie and I came to WSU, we missed playing music together and the camaraderie associated with being in a mariachi band.”

Alpire and Valdez formed Mariachi Leones del Monte in spring 2023 and interest in the band (also a registered student organization) is proliferating. Its 17 members are invited to perform at celebrations across campus and occasionally play at community events such as Pullman High School’s Multicultural Night.

What I love about the music is how it describes the love of the land, the people, and national pride in Mexico. To me, that’s what sets mariachi apart from other genres.Darryl Singleton, band advisor and violinist, and assistant professor of Black music, social justice, and jazz percussion
WSU School of Music

Through its partnerships with WSU’s College Assistance Migrant Program, the Chicanx Latinx Student Center, the Undocumented Student Center, and the student organization MEChA, the band has been able to purchase instruments and suits, called trajes, making it easier for students to join.

“These things are expensive to buy, and we can provide them at no cost to students,” Valdez says. “And we don’t turn anyone away who wants to play in the band, even if they are just learning to play an instrument.”

That even applied to the band’s advisor and violinist, Darryl Singleton. The assistant professor of Black music, social justice, and jazz percussion in WSU’s School of Music is very familiar with mariachi, having lived in Mexico for an extended time. Still, he did not know how to play the violin when he joined the band.

“My leadership style is to be an active leader, and the students know that whatever I ask them to do, I am willing to do it along with them,” Singleton says. “The band needed another violinist. I’m probably the worst violinist in the group, but it gives me a deeper connection with the students.”

Singleton says mariachi’s many different styles, including the fast-paced polkas, waltzes, and love songs, keep listeners on their toes and entertained.

Renovations improve user experience at the Student Rec Center

Students, faculty, and staff back for the fall semester have been enjoying numerous upgrades made to the Student Recreation Center (SRC) on the Washington State University Pullman campus. The SRC experienced a flurry of construction activity during the summer as it underwent several big renovations — all aimed at enhancing the user experience of its patrons.

One of the final projects, the resurfacing of the pool deck and a complete makeover of its mechanical room, was recently completed and the pool and spa are back in service.

The SRC has been one of the busiest buildings on campus since it opened in 2001. It will welcome its 12th millionth patron this fall.

“The SRC is 23 years old now, and even though we have done a good job of maintaining it over the years, it was time to make upgrades in some areas,” said Nick Prante, associate director of University Recreation. “I’m excited we were able to make these upgrades, and I think the end result is grabbing people’s attention.”

The renovations impacted a lot of key areas within the facility, but the projects were staggered throughout the summer to lessen the impact on users. Here is a list of the major upgrades:

  • The basketball, volleyball, and sport courts were sanded, repaired, and refinished. As part of the renovations, additional basketball courts were made to accommodate volleyball, pickleball, and badminton to meet growing demand.
  • The floors in the locker rooms and restrooms on the first floor received a new multilayered, high-tech acrylic coating. The same treatment was applied to the pool and hot tub deck, as well as the locker room floors and foot wash stations in the Chinook Student Center. The new surface provides a better seal, is easier to maintain, and is less slippery when wet.
  • New filters, pumps, and chlorine feeder were installed in the pool mechanical room. Mechanical room failures had become frequent, causing the pool and hot tub to temporarily close for repairs.
  • Lots of new equipment was installed including a Synergee Power Rack and Pulley System, treadmills, stair steppers, ellipticals, dumbbells, and exercise bikes.
  • The SRC’s roof, which had been leaking, was resurfaced.

The total cost of projects was just over $4 million, with most of the money going towards the pool/hot tub mechanical room upgrades and roof resurfacing. Prante said University Recreation staff plan years in advance for these types of expenditures and set aside money over time to make them possible. Most of the SRC’s funding comes from student fees — each undergraduate student on the Pullman campus paid $170 this academic year. Other funding comes from non-student memberships and fees for programs.

“The SRC is an integral part of the day for many students, faculty, and staff, and we think it is important to keep the facility looking good,” Prante said. “Just knowing how it impacts the fitness and wellbeing of our students, we believe the money spent on these renovations is a good investment.”

International Students get work experience while learning abroad

Valeria Parada Giacoman, a junior in neuroscience with a minor in psychology, has worked in a lab in Clark Hall since last spring and prepares solutions with reagents to test plant materials for disease.

Though her major isn’t focused on agriculture, the lab work has taught her a lot about what she wants to do for a living and provides a little extra cash to pay for living expenses.

Originally from El Salvador, Parada Giacoman is one of many international students who have found part-time employment on campuses across the Washington State University system. Students on an F-1 Visa can work up to 20 hours per week. If here on a J-1 Visa, such as visiting scholars or professors, outside work can be performed as long as it is part of a pre-approved program. Parada Giacoman found her current work through WSU’s online portal Handshake. International students looking to better understand the opportunities available for part-time work can check out the website for more information.

Working in the U.S. can be a valuable resume builder and gives international students the ability to afford the cost of living while at school.

On a recent work day, Parada Giacoman labeled and measured small test tubes to see if pollen samples contained any virus or disease. It’s a multi-day process since she must let the tested pollen sit in a refrigerator overnight. Before coming to WSU, Parada Giacoman got her associate’s degree from Everett Community College and then worked for a time in her home country at a call center. She decided rather quickly that customer service will not be her career path.

“It was a stressful job,” she said. “I definitely want to stay in the lab and do research.”

Khushi Panchal, a junior studying computer science, has worked at Starbucks in The Bookie for about a year. Prior to coming to WSU, she had never worked a job in her home country of India. She said it’s common for students to stick to studying while in college and avoid working until they graduate.

“My dad never let me work. When I came here and saw everybody’s working, I said ‘OK, I’m going to work,’” she said. “You get to see the smiles on their faces. A lot of professors and administrative staff come down just to hang out for a couple minutes.”

AFW celebrates 50 years of advancing equity

The Association for Faculty Women is no ordinary networking group. It is arguably one of the most consequential organizations in Washington State University history — with the records to prove it.

The Association will be showcasing some of those records at an “Archive Unboxing” of historical documents on Monday, Oct. 14, from 5–7 p.m. at the Manuscripts, Archives & Special Collections on the ground floor of the Terrell Library in Pullman. It’s part of a series of events throughout this academic year to celebrate AFW’s 50th anniversary.

Among the records kept: evidence of how AFW members have helped increase the numbers of women faculty at WSU, establish a commission on women, and supported a gender equity lawsuit that transformed women’s athletics in the entire state with impacts across the country.

“AFW came about for the purpose of camaraderie and advocacy. Rather than faculty women being isolated, by coming together, WSU women could support each other and advocate as a group with the administration,” said Katie Forsythe, the association’s current president and a WSU human development assistant professor. “There’s room for improvement, but there have been some very important wins for AFW.”

As part of its founding in 1975, the association set out to increase the numbers of women faculty, removing barriers to recruitment and retention of faculty, including a nepotism rule that prevented academic women married to other academics from working in the same department.

Alice Schroeder recalled that even after that rule was lifted many women were relegated to stereotyped roles.

“There were just so few of us, except for in women’s physical education, the libraries, and home economics — that’s where a lot of my fellow scientists were because that’s where they could get jobs, even though they were actually chemists,” said Schoeder, a WSU emerita genetics professor.

An early newspaper article shows WSU took some steps backward before going forward with 19 women faculty to 265 men in 1979, which dropped to 15 women to 274 men in 1985. Only one of nine top administrators was a woman. Today a lot has changed. According to the Office of Institutional Research data, women represented 55% of WSU’s tenured faculty in 2023, as well as 44% of deans and central administrators — representing significant progress.

But these gains did not happen without a lot of persistence, perhaps no better exemplified than the Blair vs. Washington State University civil suit that sought to equalize athletic opportunities between women and men. AFW supported this gender equity lawsuit that was filed by women athletes and coaches of women’s sports.
