Diverse personalities in a team – strength or weakness?

Statistical data show that in diverse teams, employee productivity increases by as much as 25 percent. Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) Organizational Development specialist points out that different personalities in the team complement each other, and conflicts arising from differences become easier to control when the company’s goals are known.

“Even in the event of a conflict, it is important that employees do not compare themselves or blame each other. It is best for each of the employees not to ignore and recognize their weaknesses, but after recognizing this, try to use the strengths of their team”, emphasizes Tautvydas Tranas, KTU Organizational Development Specialist.

An empathic approach to conflict

Company representatives unequivocally agree that diverse teams are particularly effective. Employees of different age, gender or religion complement each other, teach and open a broader way of thinking, those working in an intercultural environment learn to accept and communicate with different people. It goes without saying that such teams sometimes have conflicts that must be resolved immediately.

“Conflicts of disagreement of personalities are more complicated situations in the workplace, because there is no specific way to manage them, but when a conflict arises due to different points of view, it is important to understand why it happened. They should be solved by everyone together, and if it is still difficult for employees to work together, then find out why it is”, says T. Tranas.

A variety of situations occur in everyday work. According to Ieva Vinciūnė, Personnel Partner of Rocket Software, the partner company of KTU WANTed career day 2024 , sometimes these can be comical events, sometimes simple misunderstandings, but the problems that arise should be solved in accordance with the company’s values, maintaining fairness and tact.

“It is recommended to be guided by four core values - love, empathy, humanity and trust.” These values are important not only when communicating with customers, it is even more important to nurture them at work as well”, says I. Vinciūnė.

In everyday work, the most important thing is not to forget emotional intelligence and try to hear and feel the other person. Giedrė Dangveckienė, Human Resources Manager of the company “Hollister Lietuva”, points out that human dignity, helpfulness, respectability and care must be preserved in all workplaces, because this is what helps to ensure that regardless of gender, age, race and cultural differences, everyone has a common goal and the same attitude to each other.

“Openness is the main tool that helps to ensure effective and pleasant communication for everyone. In various training sessions, employees can develop the ability to respond appropriately to different situations and learn to solve the challenges that arise. The most important thing is to communicate sincerely and try to solve the challenges together”, adds G. Dangveckienė, representative of the partner company “KTU WANTed career days 2024” .

The most important thing is the goal

When forming teams that are dominated by personalities with different characters and interests, it is important to take into account a clearly formed goal for which work is being done. It helps employees to follow a specific common direction and maintain the focus of the latter throughout the work.

“Each team member must feel part of the team and useful. It is also important that they know their role or what expectations are placed on them, in order to ensure efficient work and goal achievement”, emphasizes T. Tranas.

It is observed that the main sense of concentration in companies is carried by the manager.
