The 30-year history of Washington State University’s Terrell Library is one of adaptation, according to Phil Gruen, a professor in the School of Design and Construction. Terrell’s completion in 1994 helped save the library system; the existing Holland Library, completed in 1950, was running out of room for books by the early 1990s. Today, digitization, the internet, smart phones, and artificial intelligence have made the need for more book space less pressing. Again, Terrell Library pivoted to meet a different kind of need.

“Space has become more available to create study lounges, collaborative areas and stations, student services, centers, such as the Center for Digital Scholarship and Curation, and maker-type rooms, such as the Dimensions Lab,” Gruen said. “As a result, the library remains one of the most active buildings on campus.”

Gruen will present a lecture, “Spaces of Knowledge: Designing the Future and Past of the Library,” at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27, in the Terrell atrium, part of WSU Libraries’ celebration of the library’s 30-year anniversary. WSU Libraries of the future

Gruen suspects more spaces can be created in Terrell and Holland Libraries. Possibilities include the Terrell atrium space under the skylight and the area near Holland Library’s original entrance, which will be accessible to the outside for the first time in 30 years after the lecture.

“If we do not yet know what the future holds for university libraries, we do know that there will always be a need to find places to study or gather, and WSU Libraries have the space, and the spaces, to accommodate that need,” he said.

Gruen added that WSU Libraries seek to preserve, repurpose, or reuse historic resources rather than knocking them down and starting over.

“Terrell and Holland Libraries prove that they have stood the test of time,” he said.

Always the heart of campus

Bonny Boyan, WSU Libraries’ assistant to the dean, began her first day of work in the WSU Libraries on Aug. 25, 1994, the day the “New Library” was dedicated. She recalled the heightened enthusiasm for the new library, and the dedication event, held on the new library lawn roof, was an enormous success.

“I remember being impressed that the staff all seemed to be united together for the same cause,” she said.

When the library was named after former WSU president Glenn Terrell in 2006, his portrait was installed in the hallway near the entrance to the reference area, where it remains today. Terrell came to Pullman for the dedication, and after seeing the portrait, he asked for a private meeting with the library director, Boyan said.

“He was concerned that the portrait didn’t look at all like him,” she said. “Everyone else thought the artist captured his likeness perfectly!”

Terrell Library continues to be the preferred study and gathering spot on campus, Boyan said. “While walking around campus, I often overhear conversations that focus on the libraries. Holland and Terrell Libraries will always be the heart of the campus.”

The opportunity to serve a preeminent university during a pivotal time in higher education excited Chris Riley-Tillman.

Washington State University’s land-grant mission, particularly how its multi-campus structure represents what he views as the ideal for the future of land grant institutions, cemented it as the place to be.

And in relocating to Pullman, he’d also be able to uphold the one rule he’d set for himself: find somewhere that excited his wife and son.

As of July 1, Riley-Tillman is the university’s new provost, grateful for the opportunity afforded to him and energized about the months and years ahead.

Just three weeks into his new role, Riley-Tillman sat down to discuss the path that led him to WSU, his views on the current landscape of higher education, and his plans for the upcoming semester and beyond.

Making an impact

When evaluating his next professional step, Riley-Tillman knew he wanted to go somewhere where he’d be able to make a difference.

“I wanted to be at a land-grant institution during a pivotal time when the decisions being made will matter and have a lasting, positive impact on the future for our students, faculty, and staff,” he said.

WSU’s historic role — its mission of providing educational opportunities to all students while fulfilling the workforce needs of the state — must not only be preserved, but enhanced. That’s done by expanding the programs across the system that make WSU exceptional, Riley-Tillman said. The upcoming program optimization process for academic affairs will be critical in determining the next steps for WSU, he added.

Despite the headwinds WSU and higher education at large have faced in recent years, Riley-Tillman is confident about WSU’s future. The way the university has positioned campuses to serve unique communities within a unified system is at the core of that optimism.

“The reality is that most land-grants aren’t able to adequately serve all students in a meaningful manner across their entire state because they have one central campus,” Riley-Tillman said. “If you were remaking a land-grant university system today, you’d do what WSU has done in putting campuses in Everett, Pullman, Spokane, Tri-Cities, and Vancouver with online options via WSU Global. What WSU did by truly embracing one faculty and one degree was very forward-thinking and made it a uniquely positioned institution.”

Rebuilding lines of communication

Prior to his arrival, a number of faculty members at WSU raised their concerns about the future of the university.

Rebuilding lines of communication is central to addressing the concerns of faculty and staff, Riley-Tillman said.

“As a starting point, I will have an extraordinarily engaged relationship with our deans throughout my tenure,” Riley-Tillman said. “It’s incredibly important for the provost and deans to not only meet regularly, but when a problem pops up, they need to contact me right then. We don’t want to wait for the monthly one-on-one to deal with emerging issues.”

It’s also vital that the provost reestablish regular communication with department chairs and school directors to ensure they are up to speed on discussions happening between deans and the provost.

“I know everyone laughs about meetings, but when you don’t have them, and relationships are not strong, communication breaks down,” Riley-Tillman said.

Faculty Senate will continue to be an important partner to the Provost’s Office. Its significant and long-standing role as the representative faculty body is vital to the health of the university moving forward, Riley-Tillman said, and the commitment to shared governance must be preserved.

PULLMAN, Wash. — An artificial intelligence algorithm can allow researchers to more efficiently use 3D printing to manufacture intricate structures.

The Washington State University study, published in the journal Advanced Materials Technologies, could allow for more seamless use of 3D printing for complex designs in everything from artificial organs to flexible electronics and wearable biosensors. As part of the study, the algorithm learned to identify, and then print, the best versions of kidney and prostate organ models, printing out 60 continually improving versions.

“You can optimize the results, saving time, cost and labor,” said Kaiyan Qiu, co-corresponding author on the paper and Berry Assistant Professor in the WSU School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering.

The use of 3D printing has been growing in recent years, allowing industrial engineers to quickly convert customized designs on a computer to a wide range of products — including wearable devices, batteries and aerospace parts.

But for engineers, trying to develop the correct settings for their printing projects is cumbersome and inefficient. Engineers have to decide on materials, the printer configuration and the dispensing pressure of the nozzle, for instance — all of which affect the final product.

“The sheer number of potential combinations is overwhelming, and each trial costs time and money,” said Jana Doppa, co-corresponding author and Huie-Rogers Endowed Chair Associate Professor of Computer Science at WSU.

Qiu has done research for several years in developing complex, lifelike 3D-printed models of human organs. They can be used, for instance, in training surgeons or evaluating implant devices, but the models have to include the mechanical and physical properties of the real-life organ, including veins, arteries, channels and other detailed structures.

Qiu, Doppa, and their students used an AI technique called Bayesian Optimization to train and find the optimized 3D-printing settings. Once it was trained, the researchers were able to optimize three different objectives for their organ models — the geometry precision of the model, its weight or how porous it is and the printing time. Porosity of the organ model is important for surgery practice, for instance, because the model’s mechanical properties can change depending on its density.

“It’s hard to balance all the objectives, but we were able to strike a favorable balance and achieve the best possible printing of a quality object, regardless of the printing type or material shape,” said co-first author Eric Chen, a WSU visiting student working in Qiu’s group in the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering. 

Alaleh Ahmadian, co-first author and WSU graduate student in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, added that the researchers were able to look at all the objectives in a balanced manner for favorable results and that the project benefited from its interdisciplinary perspective.

“It is very rewarding to work on interdisciplinary research by performing physical lab experiments to create real world impact,” she said.

The researchers first trained the computer program to print out a surgical rehearsal model of a prostate. Because the algorithm is broadly generalizable, they could easily change it with small tunings to print out a kidney model.

 “That means that this method can be used to manufacture other more complicated biomedical devices, and even to other fields,” said Qiu.

Long after his passing, Paul Schroeder’s curiosity for the natural world will be felt every time someone examines the tiny creatures he gave to Washington State University’s M.T. James Entomological Collection.

The WSU zoologist, who passed away at age 84 in 2023, spent more than 60 years gathering and identifying beetles from around the world. Schroeder willed his collection of over 31,000 specimens to the museum, a physical archive of over 3 million insects and arthropods and the largest such repository in Washington state.

Paul’s collection is so well identified that it is especially valuable to science, and Museum Director Elizabeth Murray was thrilled to receive it last fall.

“Paul’s collection is really a jewel,” she said. “We’re very fortunate and excited to have it.”

Scientists are now curating more than 140 specimen-filled wooden drawers and cigar boxes (a longtime mainstay for insect collectors), as well as Paul’s collecting gear and insect literature. Properly cared for, insect specimens can last for centuries.

“Our oldest specimens in the collection date to 1894,” Murray said. “Paul’s beetles will still be looked at hundreds of years from now.”

With insect populations in decline globally, threatening pollination and the world’s food supply, family members hope that Paul’s collection will spark awareness and curiosity in those who view it.

“Paul wanted to give his collection to the James museum because he knew it would be used,” said Laura Lavine, chair of the Department of Entomology. “He was not only a scholar — he cared very much about training the next generation. This gift is a continuation of his legacy as an educator.”

A legacy from a lifetime pursuit

The science bug bit Paul early. From boyhood, he was fascinated by animals, especially birds, fish, and invertebrates.

“Collecting was Paul’s passion,” said Alice Schroeder, Paul’s wife and a retired WSU associate professor of genetics. “By the time he was 8, he knew he wanted to be a naturalist.”

Growing up in New York, young Paul would excitedly identify birds during summer vacations in the country. After his mother died of a hormonal illness when he was 14, he became drawn to endocrinology.

“In college he was often asked, ‘Schroeder, why don’t you become a doctor or a lawyer?’” daughter Lianne MacDonald remembered. “He said, ‘I want to know all of biology, not just human biology!’”

Graduating from Stanford University with a doctorate in zoology, Paul spent two years as a postdoctoral fellow in invertebrate endocrinology at the University of California, Berkeley, before joining the WSU biology faculty in 1968 as an assistant professor. He made his career studying the biology and endocrinology primarily of marine invertebrate worms, helping identify new species.

A leader in the zoology department, where he was chair for several years, and a gentle but firm teacher who set high expectations for his students, Paul especially loved teaching a five-day, intensive marine invertebrate course on the Pacific coast.

Paul’s interest in the James museum went beyond the fact that he knew its namesake, WSU entomologist Maurice James.

He first encountered insect collecting in 1961 through a fellow Stanford graduate student, then went on a three-month voyage in the South Pacific, collecting beetles everywhere the ship landed. By the time he met Alice in 1964, he was an enthusiast.

The sheer number and diversity of beetles worldwide fascinated Paul. With 400,000 described species and counting, beetles make up a quarter of all known animal species.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Most of the Washington State University Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine’s inaugural class of doctors are choosing to practice in Washington as they complete their post-graduate training in residency programs across the country and decide where to go as fully qualified physicians.

According to a recent alumni survey, 74% of respondents plan to go into practice, with 94% planning to practice in Washington or considering it. Nearly a third plan to practice in eastern Washington or other rural areas, bringing more primary care physicians to underserved regions of the state.

“This is the realization of what we were founded to do,” said Leila Harrison, vice dean for Admissions, Student Affairs, and Alumni Engagement.

For Dr. Brent Conrad, the choice was an easy one. Raised on a small wheat farm near Colfax, Washington, he knew he wanted to be a doctor from an early age after performing basic first aid on an elementary school classmate with a skinned knee and shadowing doctors as a high school student at a Colfax clinic.

He’ll now be practicing at that same clinic as a physician. After earning his medical degree at WSU and completing Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center’s Family Medicine Residency in Spokane, Dr. Conrad will practice at Whitman Hospital and Medical Clinics in Colfax and Tekoa.

After earning a medical degree, doctors complete an additional three to seven years of training in their chosen specialty through a residency program as part of the process to become a licensed physician. Approximately half of WSU’s inaugural class of 60 medical students chose the primary care specialties of family medicine, internal medicine, and pediatrics, which require three years of training. With their residencies complete, they can now practice medicine independently or pursue additional specialized training.  

The WSU College of Medicine was established in 2015 after the Washington State Legislature authorized WSU to create an accredited medical school with the aim to train more physicians to serve the state. The MD program uses a holistic admissions process that considers applicants’ ties to Washington and commitment to serving the state’s medically underserved and historically marginalized communities.

That holistic admissions process is working. Graduates will practice in communities across Washington where they have strong personal or professional ties.

Seattle native Dr. Michaela Fallon plans to continue serving the patients she established relationships with while completing the Swedish Cherry Hill Family Medicine Residency’s rural training track, working and volunteering in Port Angeles and nearby towns.

“I was born and raised in Washington. This is my home, and these are the communities I want to give back to,” she said.

While many graduates leave the state for residency and may not return immediately, most report planning to return in the future. Dr. Charlotte Cronenweth completed her internal medicine training at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland this year and plans to practice in the area as a hospitalist while her husband, who she met as a medical student at WSU, completes his residency there.

“We’re both looking forward to eventually making our way back to Washington,” she said. “Our ultimate goal is to serve the communities that trained us.”

Successive alumni classes are also in the process of completing their training and will eventually join their peers in the health care workforce.

“I hope to see each and every one of our graduates here practicing in Washington state,” said Vice Chair of Pediatrics Dr. Chris Anderson, “but my hope is that wherever they do land that they always keep our mission close at heart, our commitment to the care of underserved and rural communities.”

Washington State University has launched a new undergraduate degree program to train and prepare students to meet the evolving public health needs in Washington, particularly in the state’s underserved and rural regions.

Classes for the new Bachelor of Science in Public Health will begin this fall on the Pullman campus but additional courses will be offered on the WSU Spokane and Vancouver campuses as the program expands in coming semesters. The program’s curriculum is designed to prepare graduates for diverse careers in community health care, education, environmental health, policy and administration, or for advanced degrees in professional or graduate schools.

“This program affirms WSU’s commitment to addressing the critical health needs of our state, particularly in those areas where public health services are lacking,” College of Veterinary Medicine Dean Dori Borjesson said. “Investing in public health education is investing in the future of our communities. We believe this program will make a lasting impact on the health and vitality of our state.”

The degree will be offered through the College of Veterinary Medicine, however, the program is being developed with significant contributions and input from colleges across the WSU system, including the College of Medicine; College of Arts and Sciences; College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences (CAHNRS); the Murrow College of Communication; the College of Pharmacy; the Carson College of Business; and the College of Nursing.

Majors can select from specialization tracks in infectious disease and behavioral health.

The infectious disease track will be available only at the Pullman campus and will leverage the expertise of the College of Veterinary Medicine’s faculty and staff in the School of Molecular Biosciences, the Paul G. Allen School for Global Health, Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology and Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory. Study will focus on vector-borne and zoonotic diseases, including coronaviruses and poxviruses. The track features a microbiology-intensive curriculum with experiential learning and local internships in health surveillance, diagnostic testing, infectious disease education, outreach, and project management, targeting rural and underserved areas.

The behavioral health track, centered on addiction science, draws on the expertise at WSU’s Spokane and Vancouver campuses to prepare students to engage with populations facing homelessness, mental health challenges, chronic health conditions, and substance use disorders. Newly appointed associate professors Kimberly McBride and Todd Sabato will lead the program as co-directors. McBride previously served as an associate professor in women’s and gender studies at the University of Toledo. Sabato was the director of the Bachelor of Science in Public Health Education Degree Program at the University of North Dakota.

“It is incredibly humbling to be a part of something we really hope and believe is going to be a transformative opportunity for education and community building, not only here in Pullman but across the state and beyond,” Sabato said.

The COVID-19 pandemic underscored significant gaps in Washington’s public health infrastructure, particularly in rural regions. These areas, also heavily impacted by the opioid crisis, have highlighted the urgent need for more robust public health resources.

“One of the reasons this program came about is because the pandemic exposed the lack of infrastructure in the eastern part of the state,” McBride said. “There are immense opportunities and needs in the rural areas of the state. It is exciting to get in on the ground level of a program that will have such a huge impact.”

While there is a dearth of public health professionals in rural areas throughout the state, the shortage is especially acute for underrepresented communities. McBride and Sabato both emphasize the importance of addressing health disparities and ensuring the public health workforce reflects the diversity of the populations it serves.

“Census data suggests that, demographically, one-quarter of our country is comprised of underrepresented populations. Yet only one in 10 members of the public health workforce identifies as a member of a minority community,” Sabato said.  “It’s in the best interest of personal and public health outcomes that our systems of education, care, and treatment represent those we serve.” 

In the coming years, WSU plans to expand the program to include a master’s program to further bolster the state’s public health infrastructure and workforce.

The study replicates the methodology used last year in another paper published in Nature Medicine , which estimated that heat caused more than 60,000 deaths during the summer of 2022, representing the largest burden of mortality related to heat of the last decade. In summary, temperature and mortality records from 823 regions in 35 European countries during the period 2015–2019 were used to fit epidemiological models and estimate heat-related mortality in each European region throughout the year 2023.

Unlike the summer of 2022, which was characterized by persistent extreme temperatures in the central part of the station from mid-July to mid-August, in 2023 no major thermal anomalies were recorded during the same weeks. However, two episodes of high temperatures in mid-July and late August would have been responsible for more than 57% of the estimated global mortality, with more than 27,000 deaths.

The countries of southern Europe, the most affected

The results show a total of 47,690 deaths estimated in 2023 in all 35 countries, of which 47,312 would have occurred in the hottest period of the year (between May 29 and October 1). If population is taken into account, the countries with the highest heat-related death rates are in southern Europe, namely Greece (393 deaths per million), Bulgaria (229 deaths per million), Italy (209 deaths per million ), Spain (175 deaths per million), Cyprus (167 deaths per million) and Portugal (136 deaths per million).

As the vice provost for academic services, Huang will lead and advocate for APU’s academic mission by overseeing the Division of Student Success, the General Education program, the Office of Research and Grants, academic integrity, faculty development, visiting scholars, and commencement.

Huang began teaching as an adjunct professor in APU’s Department of Biology and Chemistry in 2009. She became a part-time faculty member and began serving as director of the Center for Research in Science in 2016, before earning the rank of associate professor in 2022. Huang served as assistant dean for undergraduate studies in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) in 2018, and has served as interim dean of CLAS since 2022. She has served in a variety of roles and committee assignments at APU, including a current appointment as an Honors College Fellow; interim director (2019-20) and assistant director of General Education (2020-22); Fulbright program advisor (2018-20); chair, Student Success Working Group; and co-chair, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Equitable Student Experience Working Group (2021-22). Huang has been on successful grant teams including the National Science Foundation S-STEM grant (2021-26 for $649,987) and other grants from the Lilly Endowment, NASA California Space Grant Consortium: Workforce Development Program, and Oxford Seminars in Science and Religion.

Huang earned her PhD in Agricultural and Environmental Chemistry in 2002 and an MS in Polymer Science in 1999, both from the University of California, Davis.

The Commencement speaker for both ceremonies is Matthew Cork, who has served as the senior pastor of Friends Church in Yorba Linda since 2000. With a BA and MA from APU, Cork has led the development of Friends Church into six campuses located in Orange and Riverside counties. Cork is also the superintendent of the Friends Southwest family of 40 churches, bringing vision and growth to the region, and has coauthored two books: Why Not Today: Trafficking, Slavery, the Global Church… and You and Broken for Good: Leading from the Strength of Your Weakness. In addition to his work in the U.S., Cork champions hope and freedom for the most marginalized people of India through the work of Dignity Freedom Network. Under his leadership, Friends Church has built 42 education centers in India that support approximately 10,000 students, bringing education and holistic transformation. Matthew and his wife, Mardi, met at APU in 1986 and were married in 1994. They are the proud parents of three adult children: Nolan, Sophie, and Ella.
