Washington State University political science researchers received a Department of Defense Minerva Research Initiative grant to help counter destabilizing disinformation campaigns and violent extremism in African crisis regions.

Over the next five years, researchers will study social cohesion and collect data in 20 communities across five African countries, each of which is dealing with a democracy in crisis and issues of domestic unrest and foreign interference.

The result will be one of the most complete over-time data sets of its kind and a predictive modeling tool designed to provide actionable insights into group and community dynamics. These insights can then be used to inform and improve anti-radicalization interventions and efforts to foster positive group formation in Africa and around the world.

Social science for a safer world

At the heart of Lewis’ research is a powerful methodology known as social network analysis mapping or SNA mapping. Similar to how an individual’s connections on a social media platform are a reflection of their personal network, SNA mapping reveals relationships and connections both within and between communities, and explores the strength, direction, and value of those connections.

“This is cutting-edge social science research,” said Lewis. “The goal is to provide critical information about how to define and measure societal cohesion across multiple levels—national, regional, and local—and be able to examine how societal cohesion affects the susceptibility of specific countries and communities to disinformation.”

The project will pair extensive on-the-ground field research in Nigeria, Niger, Mali, Zimbabwe, and South Africa with deep, desk-based research to measure disinformation, radicalization, and adversary influence; measure and predict societal cohesion; and better understand how cohesion influences group formation.

The research team includes Lewis, political science faculty colleague Anthony Lopez, and PhD candidate William Favell. Collectively they have more than 20 years of experience researching and working with communities in Africa. Lewis and Favell have previously conducted societal cohesion work across multiple countries in Africa; Lopez is an expert on the political psychology of collective action dynamics in warfare, with specializations in radicalization, political manipulation, and hybrid warfare.

“In a rapidly changing world, social science is essential for making sense of human behavior, guiding informed decisions, and understanding societal progress,” said David Montgomery, director of social science in the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering which funds the Minerva Research Initiative. “We need to explore and better understand the complex social dynamics that shape our world and provide insights useful to policymakers and others concerned with the social context of security.”

The WSU project is one of 19 university-based grants recently awarded by the Minerva Research Initiative to support basic research in social and behavioral sciences on topics relevant to U.S. national security.

PULLMAN, Wash. —  A new application that uses artificial intelligence may revolutionize the way scientists study hair and could lead to the development of health diagnostics based solely on hair.

The AI model speeds up and streamlines the hair quantification process, allowing a microscope to scan slides and collect images of hundreds of hairs at a time. In a matter of seconds, it can capture an abundance of high-resolution data that is then processed with a deep learning algorithm that collects the color, shape, width and length of each individual hair. Researchers tested it using mouse fur, but it could be applied to hair of any species including humans.

Research behind the application, conducted and developed by scientists at Washington State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, was published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology.

“In many ways an individual’s hair is somewhat a reflection of health, and if you start separating them out with tweezers, which a lot of hair scientists do, you can make some really interesting discoveries, but you’re doing this manually, right underneath the microscope,” Ryan Driskell associate professor and principal investigator of the research said. “So, the idea was what happens if you can make a computer program do that for you?”

The concept for the application was dreamt up by Jasson Makkar, a molecular biosciences graduate student at WSU who was tasked with the monotonous job of manually separating thousands of hairs for various research projects focused on hair and skin in Driskell’s lab.

To bring that idea to life, Makkar trained an AI computer vision model to identify hair using WSU’s high-performance computing cluster, Kamiak. With the added help of the Aperio GT450 microscope at the Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, high resolution imaging of the hair fibers was automated.

The application has many implications, including in forensics and the hair product industry, but allowing scientists to assess the health of a person or animal through their hair is perhaps the greatest of all, Makkar said.

By determining longitudinal data points for what healthy hair looks like in each species, he said a scale could be created for human doctors and veterinarians to grade overall health based on hair. Different conditions, such as hormonal imbalances or nutritional deficiencies, alter hair growth in ways that can be detected and potentially used for diagnosis.

The new technology could not only identify the species a hair is derived from but also shed light on age, health, and ethnicity in humans, which could aid criminal investigations.

“There’s this methodology in law enforcement agencies that utilizes hair fiber classification as a forensic tool in criminal investigations,” Driskell said. “This methodology has been somewhat controversial because much of this work was performed by forensic technicians visually identifying hair types found at a crime scene and then cross-referencing them against a limited database of hair types across all mammals.”

Driskell added the technology allows scientists to not only perform highly accurate cross-referencing of hair fibers in an unbiased manner but also generate a large enough database to accurately quantify hair types from different individuals and possibly anatomical positions.

Using these same tools, Makkar said assessing the effects of various hair products on hair is another capability the application brings.

“Take a swatch of hair, apply the cosmetic that you’re testing to it and then look at it with our deep hair phenomics tool and see how it changes,” Makkar said.

VANCOUVER, Wash. —  Some of the butterflies most in danger of fluttering out of existence fare better when their habitats are actively managed by humans, a recent study found.

A team led by Washington State University researchers Cheryl Schultz and Collin Edwards analyzed data on 114 populations of 31 butterfly species in 10 U.S. states. Scientists have long warned that insect populations worldwide are falling rapidly due to the combined effects of climate change, habitat loss and pesticides. Overall, the research team found that these at-risk butterflies are particularly vulnerable, with populations declining at an estimated rate of 8% a year, which translates to about a 50% drop over a decade.

The study findings, reported in the Journal of Applied Ecology, offer hope that habitat management can slow or even potentially reverse those sharp declines.

“The strongest signal we found is that in places where people are actively engaged with ways to manage the habitat, the butterflies are doing the best. That to me is super exciting because that means that habitat management can make a difference, even in the face of stressors like climate change,” said Cheryl Schultz, a WSU professor of conservation biology and co-lead author on the study.

With warmer temperatures brought by climate change, many butterflies have been shifting the timing of their seasonal activities, often by becoming active earlier in the year. It is an open question in ecology as to when shifts in timing are good, bad or relatively neutral for a species.

“We found that for these butterflies, big shifts in timing were generally bad. Populations with greater shifts were more likely to be declining,” said Edwards, a recent WSU postdoctoral fellow and  co-lead author on the study. “However, we were excited to discover that habitat management appeared to be dampening the effect of climate change on butterfly timing. Populations that received more frequent management had smaller shifts in their timing.”

In spite of the overall negative population trends identified for these species, the links the research team found between population trends, shifts in timing and management provide a path forward for butterfly conservation.

“This might not solve the impact of climate change, but we can mediate some of the effects,” said co-author Elizabeth Crone, professor at University of California, Davis. “It’s within our power at the local level to do something positive for these populations.”

The study included species such as the Oregon silverspot, Taylor’s checkerspot, Karner blue and frosted elfin. It also included the Fender’s blue, which has become poster child for recovery efforts, after it bounded back from a few thousand butterflies in the 1990s to upwards of 30,000 today with the help of researchers like Schultz as well as public land managers and private landowners including many vineyards in the Willamette Valley.

In this study, researchers found that the type of habitat intervention selected by managers was appropriate, with activities such as prescribed burns, mowing, weeding and actively planting nectar or “host” plants for butterfly caterpillars, selected based on the needs of each area.

Volunteers can help in active management of local natural areas by assisting with new plantings and weeding out invasives, Schultz said. People can also support butterflies in their own backyard.

“We really encourage people to plant an abundance of wildflowers and plants which are both hosts for caterpillars and provide nectar for butterflies,” said Schultz. “These should be ‘clean plantings’ meaning they are pesticide free. The more we can reduce pesticides in our environment, the better it’s going to be for butterflies and insects.”

This research received funding from the U.S. Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the U.S. Geological Survey.

That was the system during Miami University’s Rise Against Hunger event Aug. 24 as part of this year’s Welcome Weekend. With 35,000 meals packaged to be sent worldwide, there was ample opportunity to hear the gong ring throughout Armstrong Student Center to commemorate every 1,000th meal.

“We had really good energy,” said Liz Walsh-Treviño, Miami’s director of orientation and transition programs. “The atmosphere is a really positive one and makes those who attend excited to do service and be part of the community.”

An estimated 175 students and Student Life staff helped package meals of vitamins, soy, dried vegetables, and rice. Some assembled the packages, while others weighed or sealed bags as volunteers went station to station, working in shifts during the event’s nearly five-hour window.

Rise Against Hunger is an international humanitarian organization that is part of the global movement to end hunger. The group currently serves 38 countries, and a representative from Rise Against Hunger was in Oxford as Miamians unloaded materials, packaged meals, and then reloaded the assembled meals ready to be sent out worldwide.

Prior to the event, Miami set an objective of 35,000 meals for this year.

“We’re thrilled we reached our goal,” Walsh-Treviño said. “Our new students and campus community really came through.

“It’s a great way to engage our students who are here on campus for their first weekend. They are making a great impact by packing meals, and they are meeting people along the way.”

Miami has partnered with Rise Against Hunger since 2017. Jayne Brownell, senior vice president for Student Life, was part of this year’s event, as well as each of the prior events.

During Monday’s first day of classes for the 2024-2025 semester, Brownell noticed a Facebook memory from 2017 highlighting that first edition when students packaged 12,000 meals. Brownell recalled how impressed she was with the participation and output, never imagining how much the event would grow.

“This is a generation of students who really do believe in giving back and the importance of service,” Brownell said. “Welcome Weekend is the perfect time for this event. There is a sense of purpose that students connect to. It’s pretty special.”

Miami students will have more service opportunities throughout the year. Walsh-Treviño noted students can connect with the Center for Student Engagement, Activities, and Leadership (C-SEAL), as well as the Wilks Institute for Leadership and Service.

On Saturday, Miamians will also participate in the second RedHawk Day of Service. The initiative was started last year by then-student body president Nyah Smith and vice president Jules Jefferson. It is continued this year by Associated Student Government representatives Will Brinley and Babs Dwyer.

“Students are making connections in a positive way as part of the community,” Brownell said. “This program is something that can grow into a full community-wide effort over time.”

Abstract : Carbon and glass fiber reinforced polymer composites ( CFRP and GFRP) are attractive for many industries, such as aviation, wind energy, construction engineering, due to their low mass, high strength, durability and corrosion resistance. Predicting the durability of CFRP and GFRP is difficult due to the directional dependence of material properties, difficulties in identifying pre-existing damages or defects in composites, and the lack of reliable numerical models. The dissertation combines digital image correlation ( DIC ) as an experimental method for detecting defects or damage in composite structures and peridynamics with kinetic decay theories as numerical methods for modeling defect/damage growth and predicting the durability of composite structures. DIC as a non-contact method allows to identify defects/damages from the deformation field measured directly on the surface of the composite structure in use. Unlike conventional finite element methods, the peridynamics theory allows modeling the growth of any defects/damages without additional local methods. A kinetic decay theory model calibrated only for symmetric cyclic loading can be applied to any cyclic loading without additional experiments to determine the coefficients. All of the above-mentioned methods significantly improve existing fatigue prediction strategies, thus creating a composite fatigue prediction methodology that, due to the minimal number of experiments and efficient modeling capabilities, becomes attractive for use in various industries related to composites.

The scholarships, funded by her family, will support students pursuing degrees in interior design and education, reflecting Van Gundy’s lifelong passions. The Kimberly J. Van Gundy Endowed Scholarship in Interior Design will assist students seeking an Associate in Science or Bachelor of Applied Science in Interior Design, ensuring that her love for creating inviting spaces continues to inspire others. 

The Kimberly J. Van Gundy Endowed Scholarship in Education will benefit students pursuing degrees in elementary or exceptional education and those working toward careers in guidance counseling. Each of these scholarships will provide four annual recipients with full tuition and fees for that year.

A History of Educational and Community Support

A tireless supporter of education, Van Gundy’s career spanned multiple roles in higher education, including assistant director of admissions at Castleton State College and Middlesex College in Massachusetts. She earned her master’s degree in counseling in 1988, demonstrating her deep commitment to helping students navigate their academic and personal challenges. Her work was particularly focused on supporting non-traditional students, including mothers on welfare striving to improve their lives through education.

With the 2024-25 academic year beginning Aug. 26, Seminole State College of Florida is moving forward with a new strategy, programs and resources designed to create a college- and career-long partnership with learners at every level. New and Updated Programs

As a workforce champion for the community, Seminole State works with industry partners to add and update programs to meet workforce needs and help students prepare or upskill for in-demand careers. 

Data and Visual Analytics: Bachelor’s degree holders have a new opportunity to enhance their skills and advance their careers with Seminole State’s Data and Visual Analytics Certificate of Professional Preparation. This fully online program will allow professionals to deepen their knowledge of contemporary analytics tools and techniques and immediately apply it to any corporate setting where data and the analysis of it are vital to business success. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates the demand for data scientists will grow by 35% through 2032, so opportunities in this field will abound.

Pneumatics, Hydraulics and Motors: The College will offer a new career certificate in Pneumatics, Hydraulics and Motors for Manufacturing starting this fall. The pneumatics certificate will train students for jobs in the field of engineering technology and provide a pathway to continue their education and advance their careers with Associate in Science and Bachelor of Science degrees in Engineering Technology. Unlike many engineering programs, engineering technology at Seminole State is a hands-on, real-world experience so students can be sure the skills they learn in this program are the skills they will need to enter the workforce.

Artificial Intelligence Awareness: With the emergence of AI and its increasing influence on our society, the demand for professionals with the skills to understand and ethically use the technology is expected to grow. Seminole State’s new Artificial Intelligence Awareness Certificate will be the entry point for students to learn about AI and its application to various fields. While the College’s AI certificate won’t be available until Spring Term, Artificial Intelligence (AI) Thinking, a course in the nine-credit program will be offered this fall, giving students a head start on earning the certificate. 

STEM Express: Students aspiring to attend medical, dental, pharmacy, physician assistant or even veterinary school can move closer to that goal faster with Seminole State’s new STEM Express program. In this program, based at the College’s Lee Campus at Oviedo, students can take prerequisite courses for majors in these health-related fields in full and eight-week sessions, allowing them to earn the STEM Certificate in just two semesters. In addition to accelerating time to degree completion, earning the STEM Certificate via the College’s express program can increase students’ chances of getting into medical, dental or other limited access programs. 

Stage Technology: Students looking for a shorter pathway to a career in Central Florida’s bustling entertainment industry can take advantage of Seminole State’s updated Stage Technology Certificate. For the first time, the certificate can be earned in just two semesters. The courses in the 17-credit certificate have been redesigned in shorter, intense formats so students can start this fall and finish in spring. Students in this program will build a foundation of skills to begin production work in the entertainment industry. Already, this program has proven to be a pathway to a career as Seminole State graduates who have earned this certificate have been employed in Central Florida’s theaters, theme parks, libraries and churches. 

Career Planning and Exploration

Aligning with Seminole State’s new strategy, more resources for career planning and exploration will be available this fall. 

Focus 2 Career: The College’s Career Center encourages students to begin career planning and research long before graduation. To assist with that effort, the center is offering Focus 2 Career, a program that helps students choose majors, explore occupations and make informed career decisions. The program assesses students’ work interests, personality, values, skills and leisure interests to guide them toward occupations and supporting majors at Seminole State that match their personal preferences and attributes. It allows them to navigate their career options and track their academic and professional experience as they progress toward career readiness. Focus 2 Career saves their results so student can access their information at any time as often as they wish. This summer, 500 students in the College’s first year experience course used the program, and it will be available to more students in that course this fall. Prospective and current students as well as alumni can access Focus 2 via the Career Center website under Career Opportunities.

For Seminole State College of Florida alumna and two-time scholarship award-winner Melissa Cunningham, the last decade has been nothing short of remarkable and driven.

While living in Central Florida with her sister, Melissa enrolled in the associate degree program at Seminole State College for general studies during the summer of 2012. She was looking for a change of pace and in need of support and direction following hardships. With a long-term professional healthcare vision in mind, Melissa advanced her studies at the Grindle Honors Institute, where she first learned of the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation College Scholarship Program.

She joined the Non-traditional Student Club with a young child at home. Non-traditional students are a vibrant part of Seminole State, bringing important life experiences that enhance the College experience, inside and outside the classroom. They often model a strong commitment to their education, an ability to juggle myriad responsibilities, and wisdom that comes from additional life experience. She also showcased her talents through leadership roles with Phi Theta Kappa and the STEM Club while on campus.

She was one of four students from Seminole State who earned a Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship in 2015. At that time, the College was only the second in the nation to have had four Jack Kent Cooke scholars in one year. Melissa graduated Summa Cum Laude in Spring 2015 with an Associate in Arts (A.A.) degree in General Education and an honors diploma. 

Cunningham used her transfer scholarship to attend the University of Southern Maine (USM), where she graduated in May 2018 from the honors program with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing with a biology minor. In 2022, she achieved her Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner degree. During her studies at USM, she was awarded the Cooke Graduate Scholarship to help her complete her graduate studies.

Today, Melissa is a medical psychiatric provider at Pine Tree Recovery Center, an inpatient substance use treatment center in her hometown of Portland, Maine. As the primary psychiatric provider for the 28-day residential recovery program, she oversees the psychiatric and mental healthcare during post-acute substance withdrawal, including initial psychiatric evaluation and weekly follow-up, medication management, and supportive psychotherapy. Pine Tree is a nationally accredited substance use detoxification and treatment center and one of the country’s most highly respected programs. The Pine Tree experience was created by top addiction treatment professionals using extensive feedback from clients to create a truly unique and highly effective program.

While Melissa continues to excel through her work in the drug and alcohol detoxification and inpatient program, she envisions new goals in her future. She gravitates to smaller niches in healthcare to fulfill the community’s unmet needs. She seeks to create a better partnership, or bridge, for clients as they transition out of the 30-day inpatient program to ongoing outpatient services.

Furthermore, she aims to leverage her personal and professional experience and expand her reach in the nonprofit space to abolish food insecurities and create unity and diversity awareness. 

When asked about her best advice to the next generation of Seminole State students, Melissa shared this takeaway message: “Create a goal and commitment in your mind and persevere with positive self-talk. Mindset is key.”
