Medical Librarians Month: Giving providers information to make informed decisions

October is Medical Librarians Month, and Ann Dyer, director of the WSU Health Sciences Library in Spokane, recently spoke about her profession and the importance of medical librarianship to all health sciences fields, which rely on an incredible degree of trust between patients and their providers.

“That trust is based on the idea that their providers know the best current information to help them prevent illness or return to health,” she said. “However, the landscape of medical information is extraordinarily vast, complex, and in constant flux. Medical libraries organize that information in a way that makes it findable and useful for providers, and medical librarians provide invaluable guidance and services to get the right information into the right hands at the right time.”

WSU medical librarians’ important roles

As an academic facility, the Health Sciences Library has a broader mandate: to also support the research conducted at WSU Health Sciences, Dyer said.

“The scholarly conversation relies on having all of the relevant information on a research question before publishing new findings, and medical librarians are essential team members in collecting that information in a systematic and comprehensive way,” she said.

They are also essential to the curriculum and instruction teams in the health sciences colleges, Dyer said. Students in the field need extensive practice and guidance in finding and using new information throughout their careers.

“Evidence-based practice requires practitioners to be able to find the best current information efficiently and effectively, every time, for every patient. Library search methods help them do that,” she said.

Today’s challenges in medical librarianship

The information landscape is incredibly overwhelming, Dyer said. In addition, the ease of online searching means that people often overestimate their ability to find reliable information, often disregarding quality for speed.

“Medical librarians face an uphill battle with many practitioners and researchers to demonstrate our deep need for well-indexed, organized, and curated information,” she said.

Another challenge is the changing economic model for scholarly information, Dyer explained. An intense push for open-access publishing models has shifted publishers’ revenue streams from subscribers to the suppliers of the information: researchers who want to publish their findings. Making access to information more democratic and equitable has created the opportunity for some individuals to establish “a publishing underworld of predatory publications.”

“These are publications that look like reputable titles but fail to provide the peer review and editorial practices that are standard and required to ensure that the information being published is reliable and high quality,” she said. “The increasing challenge of identifying these low-quality publications makes the role of the medical librarian ever more important.”

Navigators connect students with the resources they need

When the Washington Student Achievement Council (WSAC) allocated Washinton State University $480,000 in 2023 to help support students experiencing food insecurity, Heather Case, assistant dean of students on the Pullman campus, did not think it was going to be difficult to find students to take the money.

“When we began emailing students about the funding, a lot of them thought it was a scam,” Case said. “They thought it was too good to be true and ignored our emails.”

Now Case has a person on staff, Annalei Santos, to add a more personal touch to the outreach effort. In fact, several WSU campuses — in Pullman, Tri-Cities, and Vancouver — have created positions called basic needs (benefits) navigators to help connect students experiencing houselessness, food insecurity, or childcare challenges, with WSU, county, and state resources that can help them.

“We noticed the number of students applying for emergency funding went up again from last year,” said Case. “The need for assistance keeps increasing, and I think these positions will make a significant difference in student persistence.”

State steps up its support

The basic needs navigator positions are funded by multiple sources including WSAC grants created to address housing and food security.

A Washington Student Experience Survey administered by WSAC in 2022 found that nearly half of all college students across Washington experienced some form of basic needs insecurity. One in three students surveyed experienced food insecurity or housing insecurity, and one in 10 students experienced houselessness in the past 12 months. The survey will be conducted again Oct. 28 to Nov. 22 and all WSU students will be encouraged to participate.

WSU Pullman’s allocation of $480,000 over two years (and a commitment for additional third-year funding) is being used to support first-year, low-income or Washington Application for State Financial Aid (WASFA) students living in the residence halls.

A person to’ lean on’

Santos has seen up close the impact housing and food insecurity can have on people. While attending college in the Northern Mariana Islands, a super typhoon devastated her community leaving thousands of people struggling to meet their basic needs. When her classes eventually resumed, they were held in FEMA tents, which prompted her to transfer to WSU Pullman.

“No one should have to go to school in those conditions,” Santos said. “I learned that it is important to lean on the people around you during tough times and I feel privileged to be a person WSU students can lean on when they experience challenges.”

The navigators connect with students through online referrals and the student care network, and employ a variety of other tactics to make themselves visible and accessible to students. Santos has established office hours in the African American Student Center, LGBTQ+ Center, the Access Center, and Undocumented Center, and she’s working with other affinity centers to do the same.

Maneesha Gammana Liyanage, basic needs navigator at WSU Tri-Cities, tables on campus, visits classes, and networks with faculty and staff.

Gammana Liyanage said students on her campus often have a lot on their plates including being parents, employees, caregivers, in addition to being students. With that come a variety of different needs.

Many rural Washington state youth engage in socially acceptable firearm-related behaviors

PULLMAN, Wash. — Adolescents living in rural Washington state generally understand what constitutes acceptable firearm carrying behavior, according to a new study led by researchers at Washington State University.

Much of the existing data on adolescent firearm use and related behaviors comes from urban settings. This study, published in the journal JAMA Network Open, uses a mix of qualitative and quantitative research to paint a detailed picture of rural youths’ interactions with firearms and their perceptions of firearm-related social norms in their communities.

“This research demonstrates that rural adolescents are typically engaging with firearms in pro-social ways like hunting, recreation, and sport,” said Elizabeth Weybright, associate professor in WSU’s Department of Human Development and the study’s corresponding author. “Youth in the study generally understood what is and isn’t appropriate, and they knew how expectations for adults and adolescents differ. This aligns with the state’s legal requirements allowing minors to use a firearm under certain conditions.”

Social norms play a significant role in adolescent health behaviors, both positive and negative, and they are often a focus of efforts to change behavior. Understanding the context in which youth use firearms is critical to creating an approach that aligns with rural culture to prevent firearm-involved injuries and deaths in those settings, the authors said.

With firearm injury now the primary cause of death for children and adolescents in the United States, the quest for a solution carries a special sense of urgency.

“This research is an important first step toward firearms injury prevention practices in rural communities,” said Ashley Hall, WSU Extension 4-H assistant professor and study co-author. “To tailor prevention efforts, we need to understand the populations we are working with. Hearing from rural Washington youth is a way for us to incorporate their voices and unique perspectives.”

Using surveys, focus groups, and individual interviews, the researchers gathered information from nearly 100 male and female adolescents aged 12 to 19 years. All participants were living in rural Washington state and enrolled in a county or tribal WSU Extension 4-H youth development program at the time of the study.

“This project would not have happened without the partnership of Extension and 4-H,” said Weybright, an adolescent Extension specialist in WSU’s human development department. “Working with colleagues like Ashley allowed us to have open and honest conversations with youth.”

The focus group participants were very candid, the researchers said. Many adolescents readily shared their opinions and experiences even when they conflicted with those of their peers.

“The youth were not just willing; they were excited to share their perspectives,” Hall said. “Sometimes we forget how intelligent and resourceful youth are. They are quite literally our future, and I was excited to learn from them in this study.”

Participants responded to a variety of questions including whether they had previously carried a handgun, the age at which they first carried one, where they carried it, and their reasons for doing so. The study lent itself well to a mix of quantitative and qualitative data, which helped the researchers identify several recurring themes around firearm use.

“The benefit of the mixed methods approach is that you can blend the data together to draw broader conclusions and understand the topic in a more complete way,” Weybright said. “Quantitative data provides numbers, while qualitative data offers a rich description and context for those numbers.”

Many study participants said they understood that youths require adult supervision while using a firearm. Some also emphasized the importance of receiving training before handling a firearm. The researchers were especially encouraged by those findings.

Where, oh where, have they gone?

A girl was chronically late for first period at her high school. The school counselor met with her, and they took a quick assessment that launched a conversation.

They found out that the girl was responsible for getting her younger sisters ready every morning, and the school adjusted her start time so she could make it to school last year.

“She wasn’t doing anything negative or bad. She had more responsibility at home than most kids have,” says Brian French, Berry Family Distinguished and Regents Professor at Washington State University’s College of Education. It’s important to understand the environment to get students back to school, he says.

French and a team of WSU researchers manage and refine the tool used by the student and school counselor: the Washington Assessment of the Risks and Needs of Students (WARNS). The 40-question, web-based assessment for middle and high school students offers a way to identify individual reasons for missing school.

WARNS is crucial as a wave of truancy and chronic absenteeism sweeps across schools throughout the country. About 26 percent of public school students in most states were considered chronically absent—typically missing about 18 school days for any reason—in the 2022–23 school year. That’s up from 15 percent before the pandemic, according to an American Enterprise Institute study.

Chronic absenteeism hinders educational recovery from the pandemic, too. If students aren’t in school, they can’t learn and their absence disrupts classrooms.

Washington state has another motivation for the WARNS assessment. The “Becca Bill” law requires all children between the ages of 8 and 18 to attend school regularly, and schools to work with families to ensure attendance.

Paul Strand, a psychology professor at WSU Tri-Cities, says WARNS measures six areas critical to healthy social, emotional, and educational development: aggression-defiance, depression-anxiety, substance use, peer deviance, school engagement, and family environment.

A trained child psychologist, Strand says those dimensions can “try to identify reasons why kids haven’t come back to school.”

Almost half of Washington school districts use WARNS. The assessment can help provide a framework for school counselors and others to start conversations with youth and create personalized action plans for improving attendance.

Conversations and rapport with school personnel are key to translating WARNS into meaningful action, French says. Counselors can ask students, “‘What’s going on in your environment? What can we change that helps you get back on track?’ That’s the power of that type of information,” he says.

Thao Vo (’15 Psych., ’19 MA, ’24 PhD Ed. Psych.), who works on WARNS, did a deep dive for her doctoral dissertation with three school districts—a rural, suburban, and urban district—to find how they used WARNS.

“I wanted to know how specialists navigate this idea of chronic absenteeism, truancy, and overall risks for disengagement,” Vo says.

She found each district had distinct responses based on resources and school procedures. For example, Vo says the rural school district leans into family and community to meet student needs, since many services are farther away.

The WARNS team trains school personnel, and they work closely with school districts on ways to use and improve the assessment. “We want to be responsive to schools, so we provide them with different ways to think about scores and how to interact with kids with respect to their scores,” Strand says.

For example, Chad Gotch (’12 PhD Ed. Psych.), an associate professor in educational psychology, works with the team to develop fictional vignettes for each test dimension as conversation starters with students.

Gotch notes that the tool offers another important benefit. “WARNS is an opportunity to connect a student with an adult who cares,” he says. “And we know that can be powerful.”

French says the future for WARNS could be a modified instrument for elementary school students, a shorter version, and possibly expansion to more states. WARNS is already used in a few Wisconsin, Virginia, and Minnesota school districts and youth service providers.

WARNS can be powerful for students as well as schools. “We want to see changes that actually increase student empowerment, engagement, and strengthening relationships with school staff and family,” Vo says.

French and the WARNS team feel those outcomes are a rewarding way to help the state’s communities.

“It is meaningful work. What’s more essential than helping kids stay connected to school? It’s just a very fundamental thing that we should be engaged in,” Gotch says.

Ensuring election integrity

During a visit to the Pullman campus earlier this year, former Washington Secretary of State Kim Wyman underlined the political divide as one of the chief issues facing the country heading into the 2024 Presidential Election.

“We’re living in one of most polarized times in our history,” Wyman said. “And that political division is creeping into perceptions about our elections.”

A recent Gallup poll found that while 84% of Democrats are confident that votes are counted accurately, just 28% of Republicans reported the same sentiment.

To meet this challenge, Wyman and her colleagues at the Bipartisan Policy Center are working to bring knowledge about the elections process and the steps taken to ensure results are timely and accurate.

With a tight presidential race and continuing misinformation about U.S. elections, Washington State University’s Thomas S. Foley Institute for Public Policy and Service is part of a national effort to help educate and inform voters about the reliability of perhaps the most crucial part of democratic self-governing.

“Evidence shows that U.S. elections are among the safest and most secure in the world,” Cornell Clayton, director of the Foley Institute, said. “In the wake of the 2020 Presidential Election, more than 60 lawsuits as well as numerous recounts and audits found no evidence of widespread irregularity that could have changed the results.

He continued, “Despite this, election integrity has become a divisive partisan issue. Democracy is impossible if voters do not trust the electoral process, and that is why it is more critical than ever that we educate the public about ballot security and election integrity, and we work to increase the transparency in the administration of our elections.”

Some of the most important work, however, is being done at the local level, where elections workers answer questions and carry out their responsibilities despite rising threats against them.

Sandy Jamison, auditor for Whitman County, wants voters to see her and her fellow auditors across the state as a resource.

“I want people coming to me rather than relying on what they’ve heard at the coffee shop or saw on Facebook,” Jamison said.

Efforts to ensure the integrity of the elections process begin long before votes are counted.

Center for Entrepreneurship hires new executive director

Paul Warner, an experienced business owner, digital marketer, and consultant, has been appointed executive director of the Washington State University Center for Entrepreneurship in the Carson College of Business. He officially began director duties Feb. 19.

Warner’s role is new and an expansion of leadership within the Center for Entrepreneurship (CfE). Marie Mayes has served as director since 2013 and grown entrepreneurial opportunities for WSU students. Mayes, a scholarly associate professor in the Carson College’s Department of Management, Information Systems, and Entrepreneurship, will serve as faculty director for the CfE and work in close partnership with Warner to ensure a successful transition.

Prior to joining WSU, Warner led a team responsible for global advertising, digital marketing, localization, and analytics efforts at Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories. Starting with his first marketing role at a Silicon Valley startup, he continuously gained marketing, journalism, and sales experience across several industries. After launching his own business in 2009, he consulted for clients in government, education, and private industry.

“We are excited for Paul to share his wealth of knowledge and experience with students across WSU who have an entrepreneurial spirit,” said Debbie Compeau, Carson College interim dean. “The work that occurs in the Center for Entrepreneurship is core to the college’s goal to work in partnership with other WSU colleges to provide premier business education to all WSU students who seek it.”

Established in 1995, the CfE offers entrepreneurial opportunities to students and promotes engagement, scholarship, and dialogue across the university and with stakeholders throughout Washington and the world. The CfE is open to all students across the WSU system and provides programming, activities, resources, and events that help them identify the next step for their entrepreneurial journey.

One of the CfE’s signature programs is the annual Business Plan Competition that allows high school, undergraduate, and graduate students to compete for thousands of dollars in prize money as they pitch new business ventures to a panel of judges. Competitors gain entrepreneurship experience in a real-world setting and receive guidance from business professionals in the process. Warner has served as a judge since 2015 and also taught entrepreneurial marketing for a year in the Carson College.

“Marie has done a tremendous job of building an amazing program and solid foundation,” said Warner. “My role will be to build a sustainable future for the center by expanding relationships, reach, visibility, and accessibility. Outreach to a variety of communities will be critical in our efforts to champion entrepreneurship’s ability to support people in any career path.”

Warner will spend his first few months meeting with all stakeholders to understand their perspectives and reaching out to all students who may not be aware of the opportunities available to them. He said he is also interested in exploring a redesign of the entrepreneurial space in the WSU Commons to better accommodate students and visitors.

“I see the center as a beacon for all students or alums who have an idea or dream and want to start their own business and/or take their career to the next level,” said Warner. “We want to continue to expand and earn additional recognition as a committed resource for advice, education, innovation, funding, and mentorship.”

Carson College of Business hosts annual marketing symposium

The Carson College of Business at Washington State University will host its annual Marketing Symposium 10:30 a.m.–2 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, in the CUB Senior Ballroom on the Pullman campus.

“Next-Gen Solutions: Harnessing ChatGPT for Classroom Innovation and Business Success,” sponsored by the Department of Marketing and International Business (MIB), is free and open to the public and is available on Zoom. Zoom participants will be able to try their hand using ChatGPT to tackle the same problem prompts as the in-person students.

“This year’s symposium is designed to unlock the full potential of ChatGPT in transforming both educational environments and the early career landscapes of business students, said Andrew Perkins, MIB department chair. “Participants will have the unique opportunity to dive into interactive sessions, where teams will tackle real-world problems using ChatGPT, developing skills in AI-driven analysis, creative problem-solving, and strategic thinking.”

Participants must bring a laptop (Mac or PC) and it is highly recommended to already have the paid version of ChatGPT Plus. The free version will work but doesn’t have access to all of the tools discussed/utilized in the workshops, Perkins said.

“We have participated in the CEO Magazine ranking over a number of years and are proud to remain recognized among the top schools in the world delivering MBA programs online,” said Cheryl Oliver, Carson associate dean for professional programs. “The Carson College of Business at Washington State University has offered a high quality, rigorous executive MBA for more than 15 years. The preparedness of our EMBA graduates to lead globally is but one hallmark of our success.”

This year, CEO Magazine ranked 284 different programs from 139 schools across the globe including programs from North America, Europe, Australia, Asia, South America, and Africa. Rankings were based on several criteria including quality of faculty, international diversity, class size, and accreditation, to name a few.

“Seeing our MBA programs maintaining their positions in an increasingly competitive landscape is a great affirmation,” said Matt Beer, Carson director of master’s programs. “It’s a clear signal that we’re meeting the needs of working professionals who are looking for a rigorous, fully online program that connects them to a vibrant community.”

Washington State University and Carson College of Business officials recently announced the establishment of the university’s second-ever endowed deanship. The Phyllis J. Campbell Endowed Deanship stems from an extraordinarily generous gift from Phyllis (’73 Busi. Admin.) and Bill (’69 Civ. Eng.) Campbell of Issaquah, who met as WSU undergraduates and married not long after Phyllis’ graduation.

Due to financial constraints, attending college was far from guaranteed for Phyllis, who grew up in Spokane. Once she began exploring opportunities for financial assistance at WSU, however, Phyllis found it possible to earn a degree.

“At that time, WSU was one of the most affordable colleges we could consider,” Phyllis said. “My father was a dry cleaner. I was one of five children. And we didn’t have a lot of money. I clearly remember a very generous check showing up in the mail from a woman who established a scholarship fund at WSU.”

Phyllis never forgot that scholarship and other WSU resources that allowed her to earn a bachelor’s degree and launch a prolific, trailblazing banking career in the Pacific Northwest — first in Spokane and ultimately in Seattle.

WSU’s announcement commemorates not only Phyllis’ distinguished career, but also her extraordinary leadership, commitment, and generosity in advancing the university’s teaching, research, and service efforts. She is a retired bank executive, philanthropist, and civic leader who served as a WSU Regent from 1991–2003. Among her professional distinctions are honorary doctorates from Whitworth College and Gonzaga University as well as WSU’s highest honor, the Regents’ Distinguished Alumnus Award, in 2006.

Grounded in 40 years of executive experience and extensive board participation, Phyllis is renowned for her ability to foster a high-performance climate. But her career didn’t come without hurdles. Chief among them: proving herself daily in a male-dominated industry, Phyllis said, starting with her first job after college.

“It was really hard to find a job back then, especially for women,” Phyllis said. “I wanted to work for Old National Bank in Spokane. They weren’t hiring. They were skeptical of hiring women back then for whatever reason. So, I had to call them — every day.

“I share this story of persistence with students. I called the bank every day for 20-some days straight; I think they got so tired of me pestering them. I did get hired in their management training program. That was the start of my banking career.”

The endowed deanship for the Carson College of Business promises to have a tremendous impact on its programs. It will provide a sustainable base of support for innovation and excellence while affording the dean discretionary funds to address ever-evolving priorities.

“I think the deanship will help attract and retain great leadership,” Phyllis said. “Second of all, it will hopefully inspire others to give back.”

Officially, the gift comes from both Phyllis and Bill. The fund honors Phyllis’ name as a nod not only to her longtime business influence in the Pacific Northwest, but also her achievements as a female in a traditionally male industry.

“The Carson College of Business is extremely grateful to Phyllis and Bill Campbell for their extraordinary commitment and generosity to advance the leadership of the college,” said Debbie Compeau, interim dean. “I am proud the Carson College deanship will carry the name of such a strong and dedicated business leader as Phyllis and look forward to being able to direct this unparalleled investment toward the highest priorities of the college.”

In addition to supporting the Carson College of Business, the Campbells have also made gifts to WSU in support of athletics and engineering. It’s a philosophy of giving inspired by Phyllis’ first business mentor at Old National Bank, David Clack.

Student-run AI ventures dominate Business Plan Competition

AI innovations and apps dominated the business ideas presented at Washington State University’s 21st annual Business Plan Competition Thursday, April 25.

Cordoba was the big winner, taking home the Herbert B. Jones $15,000 grand prize.

Cordoba is an AI plug-in that facilitates communication between architects and clients. Using text-to-3D AI modeling, clients can specify desired designs for their homes.

Student teams presented their business ideas and competed for cash and in-kind prizes totaling $86,000 at the competition, hosted by the WSU Center for Entrepreneurship (CFE).

Two hundred thirty-six students from nine WSU colleges, six universities, and six high schools across Washington and Idaho formed 118 venture teams that competed in three different leagues. The unique venture teams represented a wide variety of academic majors and programs of study including arts and sciences, natural resource sciences, veterinary medicine, neuroscience, global challenges, communications, business, and more.

Venture teams participated in numerous rounds of competition over the last six weeks. WSU students competed in an initial screening round where judges reviewed their business plans. Twenty teams advanced to present in a virtual semi-final round. Foster Garvey Open League and High School League teams competed in preliminary screening rounds. The top four teams in the Foster Garvey Open and High School leagues, and the top five teams in the College League advanced to the in-person finals hosted on the WSU Pullman campus, Thursday, April 25.

Winners earn big checks, trophies at annual awards banquet

The winning teams from all three leagues were invited to an awards banquet immediately following the final presentations. During the banquet, all teams participated in a trade show where banquet attendees learned more about their business ideas. Nikki Torres (’16), Emmy award winning TV journalist and WSU alum, served as master of ceremonies for the banquet. After dinner, WSU alum Brea Starmer (’05), founder and CEO of Lions & Tigers, a professional workforce and staffing solutions company, delivered a keynote address.

The Herbert B. Jones grand prize in the College League and first place awards in the Open and High School Leagues were among the night’s highlights.

University of Washington team Happy Pop won first place in the Foster Garvey Open League. Happy Pop, a healthy alternative to popcorn, is a snack made from popped sorghum, an ancient Indian grain.

In the High School League, venture team Protein Palace from Mercer Island High School won first place. A fast casual restaurant specializing in high protein bowls and sandwiches, Protein Palaces tracks macronutrients to help patrons meet nutritional goals.

Venture teams on trend with AI and tech changes in business

Student venture teams developed innovative ways to use AI to improve business and enhance personal lives. Their ideas included AI plugins that enable 3D modeling in architecture, custom clothing designs, and nutritional planning. Teams also presented a variety of apps designed to help users find available parking in busy locations, create customized digital bookshelves, collaborate on grocery shopping, and preview hiking trails.

“Our student entrepreneurs are keenly aware of the current trends in business,” said Marie Mayes, CFE faculty director. “The increase we’ve seen in venture ideas around the AI, app, and technology spaces shows these students are aware of the changing market. The entrepreneurial learning they receive at WSU and through this competition is preparing a workforce ready to capitalize on and succeed in that market.”
