Student Spotlight: Kali Jo Anema ’24 Shares Openness and Enthusiasm for Personal Growth

Kali Jo Anema ’24 spent her summer working as a camp counselor at a dairy farm. “I love working with kids, spending time outdoors, and being active,” she said. Between showing kids how to milk cows and climbing rocks, Anema is recharged by engaging in nature and loving others. As a senior set to graduate this fall with a degree in psychology and a minor in honors humanities from Azusa Pacific University, Anema strives to continue pursuing her passions to help others through what she loves.

Originally from Lodi, Calif., a small town in the central valley, Anema grew up surrounded by farms. Whenever she returns home, she is most likely spending quality time with her three sisters and four nieces and nephews.

While deciding where to attend college, Anema looked at a few Christian universities in California. APU’s Honors College caught her attention. “I always enjoyed Socratic seminars in high school because I yearned for more spaces to discuss deep topics,” she said. “I appreciate that APU’s honors program is built around colloquy, a class structure that allows students to talk honestly about life, faith, and literature.”

Anema entered APU as a communications major, but later realized it wasn’t her calling. She already had a psychology minor, so she chose to switch and major in it instead. “I love how psychology is an integration of many disciplines, like social work, science, statistics, and biology,” she said. Helping others is at the forefront of Anema’s goals through her career, and psychology opens a number of different routes she can take to find that.

The Honors College has been an excellent fit for Anema as she furthers her understanding of humanity in both her major and minor. “Honors helps answer the blank spaces in psychology, digging deeper into why people do what they do,” she said. “The professors in honors don’t tell you what to think, rather they teach you how to think. We read texts to engage with them and investigate the authors’ intent in the same way a psychologist would practice critical thinking.”

Some of Anema’s most impactful experiences throughout her time at APU have stemmed from wrestling with books in honors. “I came to APU wanting to explore Christianity again. My faith has been tested and challenged numerous times, but I’m grateful for the space honors has given me to question my beliefs and hear other people’s opinions.”

Expanding on her faith journey, Anema appreciates APU’s nuance in its approach to Christianity. “I’ve seen so many different aspects of faith here that I wasn’t familiar with,” she said. Out of curiosity, Anema took a class centered around the biblical characters Ruth and Esther, and the course transformed her.

In addition to her classes, Anema has been greatly involved on campus. She was a resident advisor in Engstrom Hall last year, worked as a peer educator in the University Counseling Center, and is currently serving as a teacher’s assistant (TA) in the Honors College for the third time this year. “I love being a TA so much because I get to talk to freshmen in honors and grade their work,” she said. Anema is the president of the Outdoor Club, where she gets to lead adventures with APU students who share the same love for nature.

When asked what she hopes to do after graduation, Anema shared an endless list of dreams. From graduate school, to traveling, to working in agriculture, Anema’s many interests drive her to explore the world. “I’ll be better able to serve clients in the future if I learn and experience life to the fullest, so I’m eager for whatever doors open,” she said.

Anema’s passion for entering a helping profession, and embracing her love for nature and connections helps students thrive. From the openness and enthusiasm that she shares on campus and wherever she goes, she’s bound to make a difference.

Faculty Feature: Jenna Reyes, EdD, Sets Students Up for Success by Teaching With Compassion

When Jenna Reyes, EdD, RN, PHN, CHSE, gave birth to her first child, she was amazed by the loving care the labor and delivery nurse gave her. “He was an excellent example of what nurses could and should be,” she said. Inspired by the nurse’s gentleness and compassion, Reyes decided to enter the nursing field in order to share Christ’s love with others through her vocation. As the department chair of the MSN in Nursing Education, Reyes lives out her calling by sharing that same love to set students up for success.

From San Diego, Reyes pursued nursing school while she and her husband navigated parenthood with their two daughters. “It was hard to find balance between school and parenting, but my husband, his family, and my parents were tremendous help through it all,” she said. Reyes set a scholarly example for her children, as they witnessed their mom practicing good study habits.

While earning her MSN, Reyes went to different schools around Southern California teaching for Kaplan Test Prep. When she stepped foot on APU’s San Diego campus, the atmosphere felt different than any other university. “I instantly loved the students and community,” she said. The director approached Reyes, asking if she’d be interested in a clinical instructor position. Reyes had received other job offers, but chose APU because of the faith-based culture and commitment to supporting students to be the best nurses possible. She started working as an adjunct professor at APU in 2015, before becoming a full-time professor in 2019.

For the past nine years, Reyes has shared the love that her labor and delivery nurse showed her, and has made a profound impact in students’ lives.“God moves in mysterious ways,” Reyes said. “I’ve always advocated for the students who struggle most.” She recalled a pivotal moment in her academic journey, when a counselor discouraged her from pursuing nursing because of how difficult the subject is. “It is not up to anyone to decide what you are capable of. If you feel that God is calling you to a vocation, you cannot go wrong.” Reyes teaches through a lens that seeks to encourage students to persevere through the challenges they face.

She approaches students with understanding and the hope to help them see their potential. In 2020, Renee Pozza, PhD, RN, CNS, FNP-BC, dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences, worked alongside Reyes as she developed the current virtual simulation process. Simulations allow nursing students to practice hands-on application in a setting that mimics a real life hospital. “It’s so rewarding to see something you’ve spent a long time working toward come to fruition, and make a difference in students’ education.” Reyes loves running into students after they graduate and hearing about the ways their careers are flourishing. “Knowing my study tools helped them believe in themselves makes everything worthwhile.”

Faith plays a vital role in Reyes’ pedagogy. “We’re all created in the image of God, so meeting others where they’re at and recognizing their God-given talents is essential,” she said. Reyes often reminds her students that their lives are in God’s hands. “Let God guide you and you will be on the right path.”

Staff Saturday: Bree Dobos ’22, MDiv ’24 Pursues Ministry as a Residence Director

Discovering one’s calling can take a lot of trial and error, embarking on different career paths until finding the one that fits right. However, this was not the case for Bree Dobos ’22, MDiv ’24, who knew what she was meant to do since she was 13-years-old: be a pastor. While her journey hasn’t always been smooth, her faith has only continued to grow stronger. As a residence director for Trinity and Adams Halls, Dobos transforms students’ lives by cultivating a rich living experience and walking alongside them in their spiritual development.

Originally from Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Dobos grew up surrounded by many Azusa Pacific University alumni. She attended Christian summer camp as a child, and heard the gospel for the first time at nine-years-old. Dobos accepted Christ into her heart and continued striving to know God more. “I always loved church and community so much,” she said. As a middle schooler she was heavily involved in youth ministry. Dobos’ youth pastor, an alumnus of APU, recognized her ambition, as well as a joy and desire to connect others with God. He guided her into leadership roles at camp and through church.

Dobos’ calling became clear to her in high school. She was at summer camp, and the speaker sharing the gospel asked anyone to stand who felt called to pursue ministry. “Suddenly I was on my feet. I was confused, excited, and in awe all at the same time,” Dobos said.

Soon after, Dobos considered where to attend college to prepare for her career in ministry. “I asked myself; where could I go that would challenge me the most in faith and academics?” Dobos was certain she wanted to major in youth ministry, and the decision became clear when she thought of the people who had shaped her into the Christian she was becoming.

“APU is a beautiful school where the community’s passion is to ensure students are impacted by Christ and are able to serve the world by answering His calling,” Dobos said.

One of the most formative experiences in spiritual, personal, and professional development happened early in Dobos’ freshman year. She recalled a difficult conversation with a friend who disagreed with her belief that women belong in ministry. Engaging in conversation with that friend was challenging, and made Dobos question her career journey. She prayed for a clear yes or no from God, adding that she’d be obedient if ministry was not what He wanted her to do with her life. Dobos went to Hartwig Prayer Chapel, and found a few students worshiping. “I sat and wanted to leave, but felt God tugging at my heart to stay longer. A girl I’d never met came up to me and said that as weird as it might sound, she felt God telling her to share the words ‘you are a pastor,’ with me.”

Ever since then, Dobos has dedicated her vocation to serving God through ministry. She especially carries a passion for building community, which led her to become a resident advisor (RA) during her senior year in the Shire Mods. Dobos cherishes the time she got to spend with sophomores who didn’t experience their freshman year on campus due to the pandemic. She made strong connections with her residents and still keeps in touch with many of them.

Presidential search: WSU community invited to share hopes for next president

Dasgupta was a leading force in the development of WSU’s interdisciplinary data analytics degree, offered through the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and available at Pullman, Vancouver, Everett, and Global Campus. As director of the data analytics program—a role she will retain while serving as department chair—she has helped develop real-world opportunities for students, cultivated strong connections with industry leaders across the state, and led efforts to add the degree to the Career Connect Washington networking program.

Recently, Dasgupta has been leading an initiative to improve data literacy among elementary students and their families. Her data ‘playshops’ bring WSU graduate students to local, underrepresented communities for an evening of learning and discovery.

“Dr. Dasgupta is not only a highly accomplished, internationally respected researcher, she is an outstanding leader and dedicated educator who brings out the best in her colleagues and collaborators, and her students,” said Courtney Meehan, College of Arts and Sciences interim dean.

Dasgupta has supervised more than 80 graduate students in math and statistics and served as a committee member for many more in fields spanning marketing, machine learning, anthropology, and economics.

She also founded and served several years as the director of the WSU Center for Interdisciplinary Statistical Education and Research, a service center that helps research faculty and graduate student across the university improve their experimental data and leverage the benefits of statistical methods and analysis.

Her many accolades include election as a fellow of the American Statistical Association (ASA) and a member of the Washington State Academy of Sciences, recipient of the College of Arts and Sciences Distinguished Faculty award, a WSU Women of the Year award, and a Boeing Distinguished professorship. She is a member of the ASA leadership council and the immediate past president of the international Caucus for Women in Statistics and Data Science.

Learning Innovations has a unique opportunity to help translate the expertise of WSU’s faculty to students across our system.Jenny Thigpen, director of WSU Learning Innovations and Faculty Fellow
Washington State University

Thigpen joined WSU in 2008 as a faculty member in the Department of History. Her research specializes in U.S. women’s and gender history, with a particular focus on the nineteenth-century Hawaiian Islands and the U.S. West. Her extensive academic experience and innovative approach to education were key factors in her selection to lead Learning Innovations.

“At WSU, I’ve been encouraged to expand my teaching into the online environment,” she said. “Since 2018, I’ve been deeply involved in the Global Campus mission, developing and launching the history bachelor’s degree online. I’ve also created and taught numerous online courses, served as our department’s program director for the online degree, and participated in Global Campus committees for many years.”

Thigpen’s role as Faculty Fellow will further leverage her unique academic background and online teaching experience to guide the future direction of Learning Innovations.

“A significant part of my role involves acting as a bridge between the Learning Innovations team and WSU faculty,” she said. “One of my top priorities is to enhance our outreach to faculty and make our resources more accessible and visible.”

Looking ahead, Thigpen is eager to implement her vision for fostering faculty innovation at WSU.

“Our team will continue to build on the great work Learning Innovations has always done,” she said. “In addition to launching a comprehensive faculty onboarding program, we plan to develop innovative workshops, tutorials, and other resources tailored for instructors. There are many exciting initiatives in the pipeline for the coming year.”

Pac‑12 welcomes new members

This morning the Pac‑12 Conference announced the addition of four new members beginning with the 2026–27 academic year. The four universities, Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, and San Diego State, are like-minded institutions that expand upon the foundation of a rebuilt Pac‑12 Conference.

Today’s news is a great start to stabilizing the future of the Pac‑12 Conference and Washington State University. For more than a year, the partnership between Washington State, Oregon State, and the Conference has been united in forging a future that continues the tremendous legacy of the Pac‑12 Conference. We appreciate all the efforts and dedication from Commissioner Teresa Gould and her team to ensure the future success of the Pac‑12.

The four newest members to the conference bring a demonstrated commitment to competing at the highest levels. With this initial step toward financial and membership stability in place, the Pac‑12 will continue to evaluate additional membership expansion opportunities.

In my final year as President of Washington State University, I had four focus areas I wanted to address before my tenure concluded. One of those was securing a long-term home for Cougar Athletics. For more than a century, Washington State University has competed for conference and national titles as a member of the Pac‑12. This recent announcement ensures that it will continue for WSU’s student-athletes.

New grant supports early career faculty development

Assistant Professor of Piano Yoon-Wha Roh is the first winner of the George and Joan Berry Faculty Success Grant, which was awarded over the summer.

An internationally acclaimed piano soloist, Roh was selected from a pool of 33 highly qualified junior faculty for the $5,000 award that may be used to cover expenses supporting scholarship and research activities, including funding a graduate student assistant, data collection, lab equipment, related travel, and other needs.

Roh has already put the funding to good use, covering travel expenses for an international performance earlier this year with the Musica Sinfonietta in Penang, Malaysia (performing Chopin’s first piano concerto) and an upcoming October performance with the Jeonju Philharmonic Orchestra in Jeonju, South Korea (performing the Beethoven Concerto No. 4).

In addition to her recent and upcoming performances on the international stage, Roh has performed as a soloist with the Saint Petersburg (Russia) Philharmonic Orchestra, the Seoul National Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Classical Symphony Orchestra, to name a few.

“What pushed Roh’s proposal application to the top were her international performances and master workshops that not only advance her career as a pianist and as a teacher but also promote WSU on the international scene,” said Jennifer Thigpen, associate professor of history and director of WSU ADVANCE, adding that the selection committee was amazed by the truly high quality of the 33 applications they received.

For Roh, winning the grant is part of the continuous process of learning and achieving mastery she has pursued throughout her career.

“Now I am sharing with my students what I learned,” said Roh, who attended Yonsei University in South Korea and earned advanced degrees in the U.S. at the New England Conservatory of Music and other top institutions.

Residents of the Palouse will have the opportunity to see Roh perform at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 24, at Bryan Hall Theatre. She will play Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 4, Op. 58, with the WSU Symphony Orchestra. Admission is free.

George and Joan Berry established the faculty success grant after conversations with deans and faculty members over their years of giving — which have included endowed professorships in engineering, arts and sciences, and education, among other gifts.

“We learned that junior faculty had difficulty advancing their careers as a result of few research and scholarly funding opportunities for them, so we wanted to fill that need,” said Joan Berry.

Berry also wanted to provide support for junior women faculty — as well as underrepresented faculty — including those who have had to divide their time between motherhood and academic pursuits.

WSU Press finds new home

The Washington State University Press will continue to share the history, culture and creativity of the Pacific Northwest with readers, writing its next chapter under the stewardship of WSU Libraries.

Since its establishment in 1928, WSU Press has been an invaluable resource for the publication of works ranging from academic papers to works of poetry and personal stories. By Editor-in-chief Linda Bathgate’s count, the total works published in the press’ 96-year history total more than 260.

“The continued operation of the WSU Press maintains a significant part of the university’s land grant mission by disseminating research and knowledge to the communities we serve,” Bathgate said.

Preserving the press is about more than publishing books, she contends. It’s about maintaining and furthering relationships with alumni, donors, community members, and historians invested in the region, among others.

For much of its existence, the WSU Press operated as part of University Marketing and Communications. However, budget cuts within the department put the future of the WSU Press into question earlier this year.

Amid the uncertainty, options for preserving the press were explored. Pairing it with the libraries seemed well suited, as other universities like Oregon State and the University of Maryland have academic presses as part of their libraries.

The WSU Press is about more than giving regional authors an outlet to publish their work. It’s a way for us to bring forward underrepresented voices and overlooked histories, serving as an important form of outreach and education across the region we serve.

WSU Police Chief Gary Jenkins to retire in 2025

Gary Jenkins, who delayed his retirement from law enforcement two years ago to help WSU when it needed a new police chief, will hang up his badge for good in June 2025. Assistant WSU Police Chief Dawn Daniels has been chosen to replace him.

Jenkins joined the university after more than four decades in law enforcement, including 12 years as chief of the Pullman Police Department. Prior to his time in Pullman, Jenkins spent nearly 33 years with the Claremont Police Department in southern California.

“We are grateful to Chief Jenkins for leading our department over the past couple of years, setting us on a constructive path that positions us well to continue moving forward with positive momentum,” Vicky Murray, associate vice president of public safety, business affairs and operations, said.

Daniels, a WSU alum, joined the department in 1998 and has progressively advanced through the ranks. She was appointed to her current role in 2022.

“Assistant Chief Daniels has dedicated her career to serving our WSU community with integrity, commitment, and unwavering professionalism,” Murray said. “Throughout her career, she has demonstrated an exceptional ability to connect with our students, inspire our team, and forge strong community partnerships while upholding the values we cherish. She understands our history, our challenges, and the importance of collaboration, transparency, and the unique nature of policing on a college campus.”

Prior to taking over as chief, Daniels will participate in a rigorous 10-week training program at the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia. The prestigious program is geared toward equipping law enforcement professionals with the kind of skills and exposure that’s needed in law enforcement leadership roles.

The WSU Police Department will be conducting a search for a new assistant chief in the months ahead.
