How to Apply to Grad School: Application Requirements for Professionals

For busy professionals, the thought of applying to grad school can be daunting, especially if you’ve been out of academia for years. Between researching programs, preparing for entrance exams, and meeting application deadlines—all while balancing work, family, and other interests—considering how to apply to grad school can be downright intimidating.

The good news is that it can be easier than you think. By breaking down the process into smaller, more manageable steps, you can ensure you’re on track every step of the way.

Grad School Application Requirements

Your grad school application requirements will vary based on the program you’re applying for. Still, most programs have the following requirements in common:

  • A completed application form
  • Official transcripts from all the colleges/universities you’ve attended
  • Letters of recommendation
  • An up-to-date resume
  • Standardized tests

Depending on your program choice, you may need to meet other criteria. For example, Azua Pacific University’s Master of Arts in English requires applicants to send in a writing sample, while its Master of Music in Conducting requires prospective students to submit a video of conducting performances.

How to Apply to Grad School

To start, confirm the admission requirements for your program of interest and identify any important grad school application deadlines. You might create a spreadsheet to keep these items organized. It can also be helpful to attach a timeframe to each requirement. An application timeline will help ensure you don’t miss anything along the way and prevent tasks from piling up. From there, focus on the requisites one at a time.

Prepare for Entrance Exams

If you’ve been out of school for a few years, entrance exams may be one of the most intimidating parts of the application process. Not all graduate programs require entrance exams. But if yours does, it can help to review sample tests online or consider enrolling in an exam preparation class to help soothe your nerves.

Most programs at APU don’t require entrance exams. Some, such as the Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership, suggest that you submit your Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score to strengthen your overall academic profile and boost your chances of acceptance.

Request Recommendation Letters

Identify people in your life who can speak to your academic ability, work ethic, and character. That may mean professors, employers, or mentors. Once you’ve made your selections, reach out to ask whether they feel comfortable writing you a letter of recommendation. Provide a clear deadline for when you need them to submit your letter, and ask well in advance so they don’t feel rushed.

Update Your Resume

This is the perfect time to refresh your resume. If you’ve been working at the same job for a while, it likely needs some attention. Update your resume with your most recent work history. Even if your work history is up to date, review your job information and add in any professional accomplishments to round it out.

Complete Any Written Portions

If your graduate program requires a purpose statement or essay, give yourself plenty of time. Begin by brainstorming what you want to highlight or communicate, and develop a rough outline to help stay focused. Before you submit your statement, ask friends or family to review it for typos, grammatical and spelling errors, and narrative gaps.

Gather Your Transcripts

If you’ve attended multiple colleges or universities, give yourself enough time to get everything together. This process will be a bit different with each institution. Typically, you’ll connect with the school’s admissions or registrar’s office. You may need to pay a small fee or provide identification, and you’ll often get the choice of either sealed or unsealed transcripts. Check with your program to confirm whether it has a preference.

Submit Your Application and Fee

Most programs offer online application forms. Typically, your application will require a processing fee. Fee amounts range widely between various graduate programs across the US, with some costing more than $100. At APU, graduate program application fees are $45, though they may be waived under certain circumstances (such as if you attend a same-day admissions event).

Crossing the Finish Line with APU

Want to know more about how to apply to grad school and get started on your career goals? Many of APU’s graduate programs offer information meetings throughout the year to give you all the information you need to successfully apply. For more support, contact APU’s admissions representatives. They can answer your questions along the way and clarify important grad school application deadlines.

Avery Burn ’24: Sharing God’s Love Through Nursing

Avery Burn ’24 is passionate about helping people. Although she didn’t know she wanted to study nursing until the end of high school, Burn is absolutely sure that she’s found her calling. Her classes at APU have strengthened her resolve that nursing is the best way she can care for others while showing God’s love. “Being a nurse aligns so well with my faith,” she said. “I came to APU because the nursing program is one of the best in the world and I wanted to have a top education while also growing through Christ- centered relationships on campus.”

Burn’s experience in classes like Mental Health Nursing helped develop her passion for advocating for people with mental health challenges. In March, Burn put together an event in partnership with the University Counseling Center featuring a panel with six APU students who live with chronic illnesses and disabilities. “Both my roommate and I have had a chronic illness and we realized there was a big lack of knowledge most people had about it,” she said. “We wanted to create a space where APU faculty, staff, and students could learn from their peers who have chronic illnesses and disabilities.”

Burn’s worldview has also been shaped by her time in APU’s Honors College. After completing her minor in honors in the fall, she feels more equipped to speak out for the marginalized. “Before honors, I wasn’t a good public speaker,” she said. “Honors gave me a great foundation to learn from other students gifted in this area and to gain more confidence in public speaking.”

Although Burn sees her future as a career in emergency nursing, her commitment to health spurred a side business with a friend and she is excited to see it grow. Her business, Pacific Poppies, sells luxury coconut-soy wax candles. “My friend, Chloe Palmer, and I love burning candles, but they were affecting our asthma and giving her headaches,” Burn said. “We researched and found out that there are many toxins and chemicals in the candles we had. We wanted to create our own solution to that.” After researching, Burn and Palmer found waxes that burn cleanly with pleasant fragrances, offering a healthier solution for candle lovers.

Before they launched the company, Burn and Palmer decided on Psalm 27:1 as their company verse. The verse, which reads “The Lord is my light and salvation—whom shall I fear,” embodies the faith that they want to incorporate into their company.

For Burn, faith is what it all comes down to. After accepting God into her heart in the third grade, she has let her faith guide her life. “I also really like Psalm 23 because it’s calming and lets me know that God’s in control, that he’s the one leading me, my shepard,” she said. In the next year, Burn hopes to start a prayer group for APU students with chronic illness and disabilities. In the years following, she wants to share her faith through her work. “As a Christian, I want others to accept Jesus as their Savior. Through the medical field, that means being the best Christian nurse I can be and serving others with the love of Christ.”

Faculty Friday: Traci Birge — Helping Students Discover Who God has Called Them to Be

Ever since she was a child, Traci Birge, PhD, felt Jesus was real, even if she didn’t always know what that meant. As she grew up, her faith only strengthened and led her to a Christian university in Western New York. In college, however, her childlike connection to God was shattered after suffering trauma and tragedy that made her simple faith seem flimsy and incomplete. Frustrated and feeling unsettled with the answers from her youth, Birge turned to her Bible professors at Roberts Wesleyan University in Rochester, New York. With her professors, she found a safe place to ask her questions about God and, through the grace, patience, and instruction of her educators, she began rebuilding her faith one biblical passage at a time. Now, as a professor in Azusa Pacific University’s School of Theology, Birge gets to help students wrestling with similar questions, guiding them as they learn more about God and refine their faith. “I’m not afraid of students who ask difficult questions. Truly, the only non-faithful response is to stop asking,” she said.

“If you’re bringing your difficult questions to God, that means you trust God in a vulnerable and raw way. That is real faith, even if we are unsure of what it means.”

Birge started at APU in August 2018 after teaching at Roberts Wesleyan. Due to financial constraints, the position at her alma mater was cut, so Birge took a year to think about what she wanted to do moving forward. APU, with its Wesleyan tradition and location in sunny Southern California, appealed to Birge, who was used to snow nine months out of the year. Birge applied, but was hesitant since she had yet to finish her dissertation. “Every step of the way I was surprised. I didn’t expect that I deserved it. I was just willing to give it a try, and it was the best (and easiest) decision I’ve ever made,” she said. Birge credits her success to her lack of expectations and trusting God would guide the process. “I think not knowing how it would turn out actually made me less nervous, which made me more genuinely myself,” she said. Four and half years later, she brings this same authenticity to her classes, students, and colleagues.

In her three classes — Exodus/Deuteronomy, Rising of the King (I & II Samuel), and Old Testament Prophets — Birge is constantly challenging her students to ask sincere questions as they explore the meaning of scripture. As a scholar on narrative theory, she hopes to convey to her students the power of stories, especially those in the Old Testament. “I love narratives because I think their ability to shape us is profound. When you read a story, you’re not just learning because you can figure out what the moral is, you’re learning because you relate to the characters–it’s like experience with training wheels,” she said. Instead of telling students what to believe about scripture, she wants her students to hear the story and discern the message and truth of scripture for themselves.

“For me, it’s not about teaching answers, it’s about teaching humility and earnestly seeking God through the text,” she said. “How should you read scripture? It’s too easy to hear what you want to hear, rather than what God wants you to hear. We need to lean into what the biblical text is saying, not what we want it to say.”

A specific area of scripture that Birge enjoys teaching are the Old Testament prophets. She is particularly fascinated by the ways in which Generation Z is connecting the prophets to their world. “Every generation has their own specific set of circumstances, so hearing how this generation is connecting the prophets with their world is really profound,” she said. Always hoping to create a sacred space for students to apply scripture to their lives, one of Birge’s students recently made the connection between herself and the Israelites. “You have seasons in your life that the blessing itself is survival, not abundance and thriving. I think that social media and all of these different external realities make us think that if we’re not thriving we’re failing,” Birge recalled. “If that’s all the messaging you’re seeing, it becomes a narrative that’s not only unsustainable, but inaccurate as well. It’s only half the picture. Sometimes, surviving is enough.” As a biblical studies professor, Birge hopes to continue helping her students experience the revelations that come with studying scripture.

Most of all, Birge encourages students to embrace who God has created them to be so they may glorify their Creator, a process she went through at the beginning of her teaching career. Only after embracing her quirks and unique gifts was Birge able to fully live out her calling as a professor. “Figure out who you are and what God has called you to be,” she said. “Obedience, at the end of the day, is not about whether or not you simply follow all the rules, it’s whether you love God with your whole being and trust Christ to form you into the person God has called you, and only you, to be.”

APU’s School of Business: A Leader in Innovation

Azusa Pacific University’s School of Business and Management (SBM) is constantly innovating and adapting to fit the needs of today’s students. Led by interim dean Roxanne Helm-Stevens, DBA, and a host of accomplished faculty, the SBM has expanded their offerings to provide students with ways to get ahead before they graduate.

“We embed credentials and microcredentials in classes along the way, such as Excel, Google Digital Garage, and Hootsuite so students can set themselves apart for internships and jobs,” Helm-Stevens said. “When they meet with a prospective employer, they can showcase their skills and differentiate themselves from the competition.”

Gold Standard IACBE Accreditation

Recently, the SBM received reaffirmation of accreditation through the International Accreditation Council for Business Education (IACBE). “Receiving IACBE accreditation provides great assurance to our students that we continually pursue excellence and self evaluation,” said Todd Pheifer, EdD, director of accreditation, assessment, and grants in the SBM. “We received the maximum length of accreditation—seven years—which is confirmation of not only the exceptional work we’ve been doing, but also where we’re going.”

Graduates from the SBM are currently working in high-level positions at top global companies including all of the “Big Four” accounting firms, Google, NASA, JPL, UPS, Travelers, Target, Kaiser, IEHP, TikTok, and the IRS, among many others. Graduates have also gone on to start their own successful companies. “When IACBE conducted interviews with employers who have hired our graduates, they received stellar reviews about our programs, commending our innovation and creativity,” said Helm-Stevens.

“Our programs are on the cutting edge of business schools. We’re always looking for ways to provide more value for our students.”

Launching APUx to Meet the Needs of Working Professionals

The SBM recently launched APUx, a program dedicated to filling the needs of working professionals through extended learning experiences. “Our goal is to provide a holistic model for nontraditional students and learners at work—nonenrolled students who are looking to learn specific skills or get certifications to advance in their jobs,” said Helm-Stevens.

Sigma Iota Epsilon Finds New Home at APU Under Helm-Stevens

APU’s business students have the opportunity to join Sigma Iota Epsilon (SIE), a prestigious academic honor society founded in 1964. SIE’s mission is to stimulate achievement in the field of management, scholarship, and research. With more than 100 chapters around the U.S. and internationally, SIE has built a strong reputation and is a member of the Academy of Management, the preeminent professional association of management and organization scholars. After serving as APU’s SIE faculty advisor for seven years, in 2017, Helm-Stevens was appointed to the SIE national board, where she oversaw chapter quality, ensured they adhered to SIE standards, and reviewed new potential chapters.

In 2022, Helm-Stevens was unanimously approved as president of the SIE by all board members. After more than two decades housed at Colorado State University and the University of Dallas, SIE moved their national headquarters to APU during the Spring 2023 semester. “I’m honored and humbled to serve as the new president of Sigma Iota Epsilon,” Helm-Stevens said. “My main goals are to get students more involved in serving their local community and to update the existing technology and infrastructure to create more opportunities for students.” Helm-Stevens also plans on implementing case study competitions and offering more scholarships for SIE students. “APU has the prestigious position of now housing one of the world’s leading scholarly and academic management honors societies”

As needs for businesses change, the SBM continues to adapt, equipping students with the tools they need to get hired by top companies, start their own businesses, and make an impact in the world. Learn more about the opportunities available for SBM students at apu.edu/business.

Can You Major in Being an Influencer?

Social media influencers are on the rise, and if you’re seeking a long-term career in this type of role, you’re not alone. Still, can you major in being an influencer? While there may not be a designated major, you can take a few pathways to prepare for a career in this growing industry.

Learn more about the skills you need to succeed and which concentrations can get you there.

What Is a Social Media Influencer?

For many people, social media is an extension of life in the physical world. People interact with digital media daily to connect with friends and family from afar, stay current on news, and learn about new hobbies and topics. Social media influencers have reach and authority in this digital world and can engage and share information with large audiences.

In short, a social media influencer is someone who has influence in a specific area or industry and uses social media platforms to share their expertise. You probably follow your own fair share of influencers, but the work they put in behind the scenes encompasses far more than what you see on your social media feed. While well-known social media influencers may have a team to help them develop content, micro-influencers (influencers with fewer than 100,000 followers) may act as content developers, photographers, marketing specialists, and project managers all in one.

The influencer marketing industry is continuing to grow, but influencers are self-made. The road to building a brand identity takes hard work, strategic thinking, and entrepreneurship.

What Skills Do You Need to Be a Social Media Influencer?

Social media influencers earn income by partnering with brands to promote their products. This entails understanding business and communications as well as how consumers interact with their favorite brands. Writing, design, and digital marketing skills are also essential to the job. Depending on which industry your expertise is in, you may need education in those niche areas. For example, social media influencers who focus on home improvement and interior design may benefit from a background in construction or architecture.

In addition to top-level industry knowledge, you may need to learn specific programs and hard skills, such as Hootsuite, Google Digital Garage, or Salesforce. Earning a microcredential can help you develop these skills and show partnering brands you’re serious about your work.

Can You Major in Being an Influencer?

If you’re pursuing a career as a social media influencer, you can take many paths to support your goals. Many programs can apply to all influencers, no matter the industry.

APU’s design studies major equips students with the visual and artistic skill set they need to promote their brand online. Learn about branding and identity, user experience, and photography with this major to build the creative portfolio you’ll need in your career as an influencer.

Marketing

Marketing is a continually expanding industry. With a degree in marketing, you’ll have a solid business foundation with an understanding of consumer behavior, advertising, sales management, and more.

Reaching Your Goals One Step at a Time

To better personalize your education to fit your career goals, consider adding a minor to diversify your skills and fill in the gaps for a more comprehensive education. For example, pursuing a minor in psychology, entrepreneurship, or journalism at APU can give you the extra edge you need to start your social media career off on the right foot.

Faculty Friday: Jenica Morin-Pascual Awarded 48th District Woman of the Year

Earlier this year, adjunct professor Jenica Morin-Pascual opened an unexpected email that brought her tears of joy. She had just been named the 2023 California Assembly District 48 Distinguished Woman of the Year. “I was in shock. I had no idea I had been nominated. I felt so honored,” she said. Morin-Pascual flew up to Sacramento with her sister and received the award from Assemblywoman Blanca Rubio ’99, ’03. “It was surreal. It was the experience of a lifetime to be amongst these amazing women. I feel blessed that I’ve had opportunities that I never imagined would come to me, just by doing something I truly love.” Morin-Pascual also received the Public Safety Woman of the Year award for the 22nd District from Senator Susan Rubio ’01.

Morin-Pascual’s Journey

Growing up, Morin-Pascual described her parents as great role models who treated each other and their children with kindness and respect. Yet, her world was shaken when her best friend lost both parents due to a domestic violence incident.

Morin-Pascual grappled with how to process such a painful and senseless tragedy. “I really wanted to understand more about what my friend had gone through and how to help her,” she said. This led Morin-Pascual to pursue a degree in social work. During college, she interned at the San Gabriel Valley YWCA and learned how to recognize domestic violence signs while supporting victims and providing them with resources.

Now married with three children, Morin-Pascual works part time with the YWCA as the manager of training and outreach. In her role, Morin-Pascual trains and educates many groups including high school and college students, law enforcement agencies, small businesses, community service clubs, and healthcare organizations. “With some, my goal is to talk about what healthy and unhealthy relationships look like and how to recognize red flags,” she said. “For others, like doctors and dentists, I teach them the right questions to ask to make sure their patients are safe.”

After speaking to a number of groups, Morin-Pascual made connections that allowed her to share her expertise more broadly. This included working with an NFL team to provide education and training. She was also invited to speak at Red Table Talk, an Emmy winning talk show hosted by Jada Pinkett Smith. “It was incredible to have a platform on that level, reaching millions of people, to talk about things I’m passionate about and provide resources,” she said.

Wearing Many Hats

In addition to her role with the YWCA, Morin-Pascual works for the Covina Police Department as the youth accountability coordinator for first time offending youth. “Instead of having this offense on their record, we have a diversion program that allows them to work with me, attending counseling, just trying to get them back on the right track after making a bad decision,” she said. So far, eight youth have passed through her program, and one of them just graduated from college. In her role with Covina PD, Morin-Pascual also works alongside the detective unit, assisting with victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, providing resources and support.

Morin-Pascual also shares her expertise with Azusa Pacific University’s Department of Social Work, teaching Intimate Relationship Violence: Assessment and Intervention. “Students that take my course are able to get a certificate as domestic violence advocates that enables them to work at any domestic violence program in the State of California,” she said. Though Morin-Pascual has educated thousands of people through her training sessions, she especially enjoys teaching a semester-long course. “I supervised interns from APU’s social work department, so I already knew how amazing the program was,” she said. “But becoming a professor and teaching them was one of the highest achievements of my life.”

Balancing three jobs while being a mother of three is no easy task, but Morin-Pascual manages it because she loves all her jobs. “I also have an amazing family that deals with my crazy schedule. We make time to be together on the weekends and enjoy exploring new places,” she said. Morin-Pascual keeps herself available to law enforcement whenever they need her assistance. “It’s challenging, but I’m lucky because I have a very understanding and supportive family.” Morin-Pascual hopes to set a great example for her daughters, just as her parents did for her. “My upbringing is very important to my work in this field. I know what a healthy relationship looks like because I saw my parents treat each other and us with love, respect, honesty, and faithfulness.”

What to Do after You Graduate College: Navigating Post-College Decisions

Congratulations—you’re a college graduate! You’ve invested time, passion, and brainpower into the last few years of your life to achieve something truly commendable. You deserve to take a beat and celebrate this milestone with your friends and family.

Once the excitement settles, you’re on to the next thing. As fortunate as it is to have many paths and opportunities ahead of you, deciding what to do after you graduate college can be challenging.

What to Do after You Graduate College

Here are some common next steps to help you decide how to keep moving toward your goals.

Get a Job

For many students, preparing for a career is the driving force that shapes their academic journey. If this sounds like you, it only makes sense that you’re eager to secure a position in the professional world. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

What Are the Academic Requirements for Your Chosen Field?

Understand what degree or training you’ll need to stand out against the competition as you apply for jobs. Thinking long term, are there limits to how far you can grow in your career without a more advanced degree?

What Does the Job Market Look Like?

It’s easier to get a job at certain times than others. Many industries are deeply affected by economic cycles, and if the economy isn’t doing well, this can mean fewer job openings (and fiercer competition). Connecting with your professors or professionals in your desired field can help you gain insight into the job market.

Are You Still Happy with Your Chosen Career?

It’s not uncommon for students to change their minds about what type of job they want after college. You should never feel like your degree confines you to a career that doesn’t fit with your vision for the future. If you’re having second thoughts, you may want to consider holding off on getting a job in that field.

Take a Gap Year

Taking a gap year means taking a break from your academic pursuits for self-discovery, development, and exploration. During this time, you may choose to travel, volunteer, or take a job outside of your anticipated career path. A gap year can be a great option if you’re still deciding what you want your future to look like since you can explore alternative careers.

Taking a gap year can have some drawbacks though. If you decide to take advantage of your freedom to travel, this can be tough on your budget—particularly if you have college loans to pay back. You’ll also put yourself a year behind your peers who enter the workforce straight out of college.

Start Graduate School

You can decide to go to graduate school at any stage of life, but it can be advantageous to keep your academic momentum going. If you plan to go to graduate school at some point in the future, consider getting started right away.

Here are a few benefits of heading straight to graduate school:

  • Build more relationships to strengthen your career network.
  • Gain new, more specialized skills that make you more employable.
  • Add to your knowledge base while the learnings from your undergraduate career are still fresh in your mind.
  • Take advantage of having fewer competing priorities and responsibilities, like buying a home or starting a family.

If you choose this path, you can still leverage a part-time job to get valuable experience in your profession and learn transferrable skills that will impress future employers.

Building Your Network at Azusa Pacific University

Whatever you decide to do after graduation, networking can help you on your way. If you’re looking for a job, your connections can help you get a foot in the door. If you’re set on a gap year, the relationships you make can open your eyes to life-changing opportunities. And if you’re heading to graduate school, your network will advise you as you embark on your next education journey.

For more support, connect with APU’s Career Services, which are designed to help alumni take that next step, whether that’s finding a job, applying to graduate school, or engaging with other APU graduates to discuss your options further.

Cheyenne Jimenez ’20 — The Blind Faith of a Boutique Owner

On the morning of November 25, 2022, Cheyenne Jimenez ’20 woke up at the crack of dawn, preparing for her biggest day yet as the new owner of her boutique Ariete. As she prepared the space for guests by setting out a cart of food, drinks, and a “spin and win” prize wheel, Jimenez noticed no one lining up for the event like in years past. My first Black Friday as Ariete’s new owner is a failure, she thought. Within the same minute of her perceived flop, Jimenez turned and saw the line of guests she’d been waiting for. “Ushering everybody in was crazy. I had never seen so many people in the store. It was awesome,” she said. “We were serving appetizers and the music was blaring and it was so great. It was Christmas to a tee.” Jimenez’s success that day has been a defining moment during her time as Ariete’s owner. Since then, the Riverside native has been working hard to promote her clothing boutique.

Jimenez inherited Ariete from the previous owner, who planned on selling the boutique and asked Jimenez specifically if she would be interested in buying it. Though the 25-year-old claims she’s never been a fashionista, her experience working in various roles for the business — along with a lot of faith — gave her the confidence to say yes. “I feel like I’m always the person to just go for it. I tend to throw myself into situations and see what happens,” she said. “It’s always turned out great, so this was just another one of those opportunities.”

Since becoming the owner of a small business back in September 2022, Jimenez has been busier than ever. She must stay on top of fashion trends, make weekly trips to LA to obtain new styles, take photos in the new clothing for Ariete’s website and social media — the list goes on. “That’s all done within three days of each other, which is why I’m always pretty busy,” she said. “It’s such a short window, but because Ariete is so small and it is a one-woman team of me, myself, and I, it must be done. But it’s fun, I like being busy!”

Despite the many challenges of running a small business, Jimenez recognizes that there are many benefits as well. Some of her favorite moments have been taking part in pop-up events. At her very first pop-up with Creative Babe Market, Jimenez had the opportunity to expand the name of Ariete to other cities through interacting with potential customers and giving out business cards, gaining 50 new Instagram followers by the end of the day. Jimenez enjoys interacting with customers. As a small business owner, she sees many of the same faces and has built a community of loyal supporters. “I have girls who come in who have been shopping with us since before I worked here, and they’ve stuck around,” she said. “They’ve seen how Ariete has grown and changed, and they’re so supportive. I remember how great our sales were the first month I took over because everybody was coming in and congratulating me, telling me they would be here for me and keep supporting me.” After receiving much encouragement from family, friends, and customers, Jimenez has been inspired to support other local businesses, buying from them whenever she can.

When looking back on her time at APU, Jimenez is grateful for her work with ZU Media as a broadcast journalist because it helped her enjoy being on camera — something she does frequently as Ariete’s main model. “Being in front of the camera all the time really got me comfortable just being myself and not worrying too much about how I looked or what I was saying,” she said. “That’s when you get your best work, when you’re very fluid and authentic.” Jimenez’s internship also provided her with valuable skills in marketing for her boutique. As the social media manager for a church, she learned how to create fun and engaging captions for Instagram — a skill she uses almost daily.

Along with professional skills, Jimenez also credits APU with helping her grow in her faith. As she continues with Ariete, she is taking challenges head on, enjoying the adventures that come with each day and trusting that God will continue in His faithfulness to her.

“Everything happens in God’s timing and according to His way. You just have to have blind faith sometimes,” she said.

Owning a boutique was never something Jimenez envisioned for herself, but she is thriving as a small business owner, crediting the Lord’s faithfulness for her success. “I have always had faith that things would fall into place and that God always had a specific path for me,” she said. “I might not always know what it is or agree with where He is taking me, but all glory to God. He knows best.”

What Is Dual Enrollment and What Are Its Benefits?

The step from high school to college can feel more like a leap, but there are ways to soften the landing. For example, concurrent enrollment and dual enrollment (sometimes called dual credit) can help you save money during college and prepare you academically so you can show up to your first college class feeling confident and optimistic. But what is dual enrollment, exactly, and how can you get started?

What Is Dual Enrollment?

Dual enrollment allows high school students to get a head start on college. These programs vary by state, but, generally speaking, they allow high school students to take college-level classes and earn college and high school credits at the same time. Students may take these classes on a college campus or online. Sometimes, colleges partner with their local school district to offer college-level courses at area high schools. These courses are typically more academically challenging than ordinary high school classes.

Some people use the phrases dual enrollment and concurrent enrollment interchangeably, but they have slightly different meanings. Dual enrollment refers to courses that earn college and high school credit at the same time. With concurrent enrollment classes, you usually only receive college credit.

What Are the Benefits of Dual Enrollment?

As with any major life change, transitioning from high school to college can be both exciting and overwhelming. It’s a big step, but dual enrollment can help pave the way.

Dual enrollment programs help you get a head start on college by exposing you to college-level coursework before you’re officially a college student. This can help give you a better sense of expectations and workload, building your confidence and supporting academic strength. In fact, studies show that dual enrollment has a positive impact on students, including college success, enrollment, and completion.

By earning college credits ahead of time, you may also be able to shorten your graduation time or open up opportunities for internships, electives, or even a double major. Dual enrollment can also help cut college costs by shaving off room and board fees. In addition, tuition may be lower for dual-enrolled students than for traditional college students, depending on the partnership between the high school and the university.

What Does the Dual Enrollment Process Look Like?

If you’re interested in dual enrollment, you’ll need to take a few steps to get started.

Research Schools That Offer Dual Enrollment

Check out the websites of colleges and universities in your community—but don’t stop there. Since many colleges offer online course options, broaden your search to universities elsewhere with dual enrollment (or concurrent enrollment) options. Connect with the schools’ academic services departments to help you identify available courses.

Meet with Your High School Counselor

Your high school counselor has likely helped students with dual enrollment opportunities in the past. Seek advice and lean on their expertise. Discuss why you’re interested in dual enrollment and share some of the universities (and specific courses) you’re looking into.

Apply to Your Chosen College

While every college is different, most will require you to submit an application, transcripts, and other supporting documents, such as a letter from your high school counselor, to enroll in a course. Make sure you understand any associated deadlines and mark them on your phone, calendar, or other organizer to help you stay on track.

Transfer Your Credits

As soon as you know where you intend to go to college, consult the university’s registrar office or student services center about the process of transferring credits. Not all course credits will transfer to all colleges. If you have a couple of top choices, run the class or classes you’re considering by each of them so you don’t hit any bumps down the road.

Azusa Pacific University makes it easy to transfer dual enrollment credits. Learn more about transferring courses to APU so you can jump into college ready to succeed.

How Long Is a College Semester?

As a college student, you’re probably juggling what feels like a million things at once. Between classes, assignments, extracurriculars, and maybe even a part-time job, time can feel like your most precious resource. This is why mastering time management is so important to your success and well-being as a student.

One aspect of effective time management is understanding your college’s academic calendar. For example, how long is a college semester, and where do your exams and vacations fall in the academic year? By fitting your studies into the larger picture, you can plan ahead and use your precious time as efficiently as possible.

How Long Is a College Semester?

A college semester typically consists of 15 to 17 weeks of instruction, with the last week of the semester devoted to final exams. Most universities break the academic year into two semesters—fall and spring. During this time, students attend classes, participate in lectures and seminars, complete assignments, and study for exams.

Along with a traditional 16-week semester, Azusa Pacific University offers eight-week sessions. Eight-week semesters might be shorter in length, but they’re just as rigorous as their 16-week counterparts. The same amount of instruction simply fits into a shorter time frame.

How Many Classes Can You Take Per Semester?

Students typically take four to five courses in a semester, with each course meeting two to three times a week for around 50 to 75 minutes. This schedule allows students to dive deep into each subject and develop a more in-depth understanding of the material.

Most universities allow a maximum of 18 credits per semester, which typically looks like six 3-credit courses. You’ll need to take a minimum of 12 units per semester to be considered a full-time student. Full-time student status may be required for insurance or financial aid requirements.

How Can You Plan Your Courses around Holidays?

Holidays are built into both the fall and spring semester calendars. The fall semester includes Thanksgiving break, and the spring semester often includes a week off for spring break. Some universities may have time off for seasonal holidays, such as Easter. These breaks are a good way to recharge mentally, see family, and catch up on studying and final assignments before the semester comes to a close.

If you plan to use the holidays to get ahead on your class schedule, try breaking up your study sessions. For example, setting aside two 30-minute focus sessions during the day can help you get a lot done and ease some end-of-semester pressure.

Can You Take College Classes in the Summer or Winter?

Along with a traditional fall and spring semester, many universities offer four to 10-week sessions in the summer and winter. The course offerings for these terms are usually limited, and they can require an intense schedule to keep up with the course load. Taking courses in the summer or winter can be a great way to get ahead on your degree, but it’s important to care for yourself so you don’t burn out.

Staying on Top of Your Schedule Throughout the Academic Year

As long as you keep track of important deadlines and plan ahead for major assignments and finals, mastering time management in college can be a breeze.
