Demo of URN, URS residence halls begins next week

KEARNEY – Demolition of two vacant residence halls on the University of Nebraska at Kearney campus is scheduled to begin next week.

National Concrete Cutting Inc. will start work July 8 at the site of University Residence North (URN) and University Residence South (URS) on UNK’s west campus. The project is expected to continue into November.

Completed in 1991 and 1992, URN and URS were built as a temporary and quick solution to housing needs for the fraternity and sorority community, which was moved onto campus to provide a safe, education-centered environment for members. The wood-frame buildings were only designed to last 20 years.

Three decades later, they had the highest annual maintenance and operating costs among UNK’s residence halls and continued to experience mechanical infrastructure issues. It would cost an estimated $37 million to make the repairs and improvements needed to keep them in use.

“The decision to demolish any building is not taken lightly and studied carefully. It was clear that URN and URS could not sustain the type of extensive renovations necessary to meet our students’ needs,” said Jon Watts, vice chancellor for business and finance.

Instead of investing in those buildings, UNK officials decided to create a new on-campus home for fraternities and sororities in a location that promotes collaboration and a stronger sense of community among students.

The first phase of that $32.65 million project was completed in January 2023, when fraternity members moved into Martin Hall following a major renovation that transformed the 70-year-old residence hall into a modern living space for UNK students.

Located just east of the Nebraskan Student Union, the 42,500-square-foot building serves the Delta Tau Delta, Phi Delta Theta, Pi Kappa Alpha, Sigma Phi Epsilon and Sigma Tau Gamma fraternities. It features dedicated housing pods, lounges and chapter rooms for each fraternity, as well as flexible housing units, shared study areas and a large event space for the entire Fraternity and Sorority Life community.

A 41,000-square-foot residence hall was constructed directly north of Martin Hall to house the Alpha Omicron Pi, Alpha Phi, Alpha Xi Delta and Gamma Phi Beta sororities. Opened in January 2024, Bess Furman Armstrong Hall features a similar layout with chapter rooms, chapter lounges, study areas, assigned housing pods and flexible housing units, along with meeting and lounge space for UNK’s three multicultural chapters – the Lambda Theta Nu and Sigma Lambda Gamma sororities and Sigma Lambda Beta fraternity.

Together, the residence halls represent the premier fraternity and sorority housing in the region.

Recently, URN and URS were also used to temporarily house employees who were relocated because of other campus construction projects at Calvin T. Ryan Library and Warner Hall. Those employees have since moved back to their permanent locations.

After the $1 million demolition project is complete, the URN and URS building sites will be transformed into green spaces. Both sites will be available for future development.

The parking lots will remain, with zoning for any valid campus permit.

Casting arms and dissecting hearts: High schoolers get hands-on during UNK health science camp

By TYLER ELLYSON
UNK Communications

KEARNEY – Allison Heath’s interest in health care was sparked by a popular TV series.

“When I was younger, I fell in love with ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’” she explained.

Like the characters on the long-running ABC drama, Heath dreamed of becoming a medical professional. “I just didn’t know it was possible,” she said.

Her mindset changed last summer, when the guidance counselor at Cody-Kilgore Unified Schools encouraged her to take a certified nursing assistant training course.

“That’s when I realized how doable it is to get into health care,” said Heath, who started working as a CNA at Gordon Memorial Hospital this summer.

The soon-to-be senior takes a lot of pride in her position. She wants to be there for people during a time of need.

“A lot of students are interested in health care because you can make a lot of money,” she said. “Yes, that’s true, but from my standpoint it’s really fulfilling to be able to help people.”

Heath is considering a career as a radiologic technologist, radiologist, nurse practitioner or physician assistant.

“I’m keeping my options open right now,” she said. “It will depend on what kind of scholarships I get.”

She took another step toward her goal Tuesday by attending the Health Science Explorers summer camp hosted by the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

Organized by UNK Health Sciences, the event gave high schoolers from across the state an opportunity to learn more about health care careers and UNK programs while participating in hands-on activities. They dissected beef hearts and lungs in Bruner Hall of Science and applied casts to each other’s arms during a sports medicine exercise in Cushing Coliseum. Students also visited the Health Science Education Complex for a nursing escape room, injection activity and ultrasound practice.

“There are a lot of hands-on experiences, and it’s been really cool just to see the different scopes of health care and what all is out there,” Heath said.

Sara Bruner, coordinator of the Health Science Explorers program, believes it’s important to get high schoolers on campus so they can see the facilities, interact with faculty and “picture themselves” in these programs.

“There’s such a huge need for health care professionals, especially in rural settings. It’s pretty much across the board, from medical lab science to nursing to radiography to physicians,” Bruner said. “We want students to find the profession that’s right for them, then give them some direction on what they need to do next to pursue that career.”

Camp participants learn about the opportunities available at UNK throughout the day. These include living-learning communities designed specifically for health science students, mentorship and academic support and professional development experiences such as job shadowing, networking and internships.

UNK also partners with the University of Nebraska Medical Center to offer the Kearney Health Opportunities Program (KHOP), another initiative aimed at growing the state’s health care workforce. The program provides financial assistance for students who plan to practice in rural Nebraska, with many participants receiving full-tuition scholarships to attend UNK and guaranteed admission to UNMC.

Heath and fellow Health Science Explorers camp attendee Gabe Gans are both interested in KHOP.

Entering his senior year at McCook High School, Gans wants to attend UNK because he likes the close-knit campus and community, as well as the proximity to his hometown. The strong partnership between UNK and UNMC is another plus.

“I feel like UNK is a really good steppingstone for me,” he said.

Unlike Heath, Gans is already focused on a single medical field – orthopedics. He’s undergone three ACL surgeries in the past three years.

“Through my athletic injuries, I’ve had experience with Dr. (Nolan) May here in Kearney and that’s the direction I’d like to go,” Gans said. “There are a lot of athletes who end up with this injury, and I always feel that with health care it’s best to have someone who understands your issues and can relate to patients.”

Gans started assisting at a physical therapy clinic in McCook this summer, and he signed up for the UNK camp to continue that momentum.

“It’s a great introduction to the medical field,” he said.

In addition to the on-campus events, UNK offered a summer camp at Community Hospital in McCook and another camp is scheduled for July 30 at College Park in Grand Island, with spots still available.

“All of the students that we’ve had this summer have been phenomenal,” Bruner said. “We’re really excited about these students, who represent the future of health care in Nebraska.”

Dr. Dele Davies named interim UNMC chancellor

University of Nebraska President Dr. Jeffrey P. Gold announced today that he has named Dr. H. Dele Davies, the chief academic officer at the University of Nebraska Medical Center for more than a decade, as UNMC’s interim chancellor.

Davies’ appointment is effective immediately, subject to formal approval by the Board of Regents. Davies, previously the senior vice chancellor for academic affairs and dean of graduate studies, succeeds Gold, who today assumed the role of NU president after a decade as UNMC’s chancellor.

“UNMC is on a remarkable trajectory, thanks to the collective efforts of so many individuals on the campus and beyond whose work is transforming the health and quality of life for people in Nebraska and around the world,” Gold said. “It was important to me to find the right person who can keep our momentum going as we formulate plans for permanent leadership. Dr. Dele Davies is that leader.

“Dr. Davies has been a trusted colleague to me over the last 10-plus years, he is well known on campus and with our partners across the state, and under his leadership, UNMC’s academic enterprise is strong and growing. I’m grateful that Dele has agreed to step up and serve UNMC in this well-earned role.”

Davies said: “I am honored to serve UNMC, our outstanding faculty, staff, students and our communities in this new role. I look forward to building on the special 10-year legacy of Chancellor Gold’s leadership in advancing our mission to provide premier educational programs, world-class research and extraordinary health care for Nebraska citizens and beyond. I’m grateful for the trust placed in me to lead this great university.”

Davies is an internationally recognized expert in pediatric infectious diseases and a leader in community health. As senior vice chancellor, he was responsible for academic, faculty and student oversight of the six different health professions colleges and the graduate studies program, as well as numerous pipeline and other continuing and high school academic programs and initiatives.

Notably, he played a key role in launching the Interprofessional Experiential Center for Enduring Learning (iEXCEL) and the Global Center for Health Security, both of which have helped establish UNMC as a national and global leader in experiential learning and readiness training. Under his leadership, UNMC’s overall enrollment has grown every year with multiple new professional degrees and biomedical research graduate training programs added.

Davies was also pivotal in expanding UNMC’s rural health initiatives and multiple pipeline and pathway programs, as well as overseeing the creation of the Office of Community Engagement and UNMC’s successful application to become the first academic health science center in the nation to receive the Carnegie Community Engaged University designation.

A passionate advocate for developing faculty, Davies helped establish the Interprofessional Academy of Educators, Impact in Education Awards, Health Design Thinking Program, the Office of Interactive E-Learning and, along with senior vice chancellors from the other campuses, the Nebraska University Developing Excellence in Academic Leaders (NU DEAL) program. He also oversaw the creation of a campus-wide faculty mentoring program.

As dean of graduate studies, Davies spearheaded the consolidation of six independent departmental programs into an interdisciplinary umbrella program, resulting in a three-fold increase in applicants and a 12% reduction in student attrition. During his tenure, graduate student enrollment increased by 62%, the largest growth of any UNMC college during that period. He was also the driving force in accelerating the growth of the university’s nationally funded institutional training grants from one to eight awards, totaling more than $9 million in additional funding to support graduate biomedical research training and education.

Before joining UNMC, Davies was chair of pediatrics and human development at Michigan State University, director of the Child Health Research Unit at Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary, Canada, and chair of the Child Health Research Institute at the University of Calgary. He earned his medical degree from the University of Toronto Temerty Faculty of Medicine and a master’s degree in epidemiology from the University of Toronto Dana Lana School of Public Health. Davies also holds a master’s degree in health care management from the Harvard School of Public Health.

Davies said he will move quickly to determine interim leadership for academic affairs and graduate studies at UNMC.

“Over my 12 years at UNMC, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside Chancellors Gold and Maurer, as well as a talented team of deans, faculty, staff and community partners to enhance UNMC’s academic programs and build the most learner-centered health science center in the nation,” he said. “I look forward to continue deepening the relationships within the communities we serve to grow Nebraska’s health care workforce, expand our research breakthroughs and pursue new opportunities for expansion of excellence on all of our five campuses.”FacebookTwitterLinkedIn

Join David Michel at Agile Xpertise for an immersive session that focuses on the importance of Value Driven Delivery.

Agenda:

6:30pm – ⌚ Arrivals and pre-networking

6:35pm – 🎤 David takes centre stage

7:30 pm – 🙋‍♀️🙋‍♂️ Q&A

8.00pm – event concludes.

 About the session:

The ability for a team to deliver value end-2-end is crucial for agility.

However, most organisations encounter challenges with dependencies on other teams, departments, or even key individuals, making it very difficult, if not impossible, for a single team to own the entire value chain.

What, then, do we mean by ownership?

How does it differ from responsibility or accountability?

Understanding these nuances will help development teams clarify roles and expectations within the organisation:

Are we merely coding monkeys, or are we striving to be a product team?

Do we only focus on producing code or do we also care about the business outcome?

Ideally, we want to eliminate the pesky dependencies that hinder proper end-to-end ownership. But, are they perhaps inevitable? If so, what then?

Can we still own the end-2-end value chain and have dependencies to other teams? And could some dependencies actually be a good thing?

We will address these questions in this session, focusing on actionable exercises and workshop activities that you can implement in your organisation tomorrow to demystify end-to-end ownership.

Through the lens of an e-commerce payment team’s experiences as a case study, we will explore:

  • How to assess a team’s current level of ownership
  • How to map a team’s current and desired state concerning engineering autonomy and breadth of shared ownership across the product domain.
  • How to devise actions and strategies to enhance ownership

This session will offer valuable insights for agile coaches, team leads, and agile team members aiming to elevate their delivery process.

By the end of this session, you’ll be equipped with the tools necessary to foster discussions on end-to-end ownership, empowering your team to move beyond the ‘it’s not my job’ mindset towards a culture of collective success and continuous improvement.

A Practical Guide to Growing your Revenues and Profitability with Artificial Intelligence

There’s so much buzz around Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the moment but very little practical advice about how to create the claimed cost savings and also grow your business. Many companies want to “get started with AI” but don’t know how. Others have used AI but are struggling to see the benefits (other than drafting or summarising content). And many believe that it’s a complex and expensive technology.

Having worked in the area for many years, we can reassure you of two things; firstly, it is possible to create significant efficiencies and growth by using AI and secondly, the technologies have now become affordable for all businesses.

Here is our quick 4 stage overview of how we’ve seen many companies benefiting from AI.

  1. “It’s more than ChatGPT and Co-Pilot”. We can help you identify opportunities presented by AI; insights into your customers, prospects and markets, automating common tasks, orchestrating processes more efficiently across teams, automated document processing, proactive CRM and so and much more.
  2. “AI as a Strategic Business Tool”: Develop a comprehensive business plan to identify AI opportunities, roadmap services, address capability gaps, forecast measurable benefits, and foster enthusiasm and adoption among your team. We’ve successfully implemented this approach for numerous businesses.
  3. “Quick wins lead to long-term transformation”. Most businesses will be transformed significantly by AI over the next few years; imagine the impact that email or the internet had when they first arrived … and then multiply that a few times! We recommend that your AI roadmap has some “quick wins” – to build enthusiasm and to demonstrate benefits – along with some longer-term, bigger projects. Our development teams have the skills and accelerators to deliver value in weeks (not months).
  4. “Humans first”. It’s easy to forget with all this exciting new technology that the most important asset to any business is people. Equally, your customers must be front and centre to everything you do. So, while AI can be very impressive with huge datasets, we will always need our “human skills” of creativity, relationship-building, empathy and accountability. Further, we need our staff and partners to champion improvement, to actively contribute to success through AI and fully embrace change. In this important area, we offer services from training and education to change management.

If you’re thinking of using AI to grow your business, why not speak with us. Our experts have helped all sizes of business in many different sectors and can get you started on your AI journey in a practical way.
