The 141^st season of Massachusetts football kicks off against Eastern Michigan at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 31, at McGuirk Alumni Stadium. The game will mark the start of 13^th FBS season for the Minutemen and ninth as an independent.

The game, which celebrates Youth Day at the stadium, will also mark a celebration of the life and achievements of Matthew W. Bullock, the first known African American head coach at a predominantly white institution in the United States and football head coach at UMass – then Massachusetts Agricultural College – during the 1904, 1907 and 1908 seasons.

The Department of Athletics will also unveil several gameday experience upgrades at McGuirk Alumni Stadium for the 2024 home football season. 

The Massachusetts Thruway 

The main entrance of McGuirk Alumni Stadium on gameday, the Massachusetts Thruway is a new experience from UMass Dining where fans can walk through Bays 15 and 16 to pick up all their concession needs. Baby Berk food trucks will feature burgers, quesadillas, fries and more, and fans will be able to grab their favorite snacks, beverages, beers and seltzers on the walk into the stadium.

The Barracks

An all-new south end zone food court, the Barracks provides a great area to watch all the on-field action at event level. The Maroon side will feature cornhole, a draft beer trailer, steak and cheese subs and gluten free options. Both sides offer beverages of all kinds, a new hangout area and a drink rail right on the field.

The Bunker Bars are now located right on the sideline in front of sections 3 and 13, providing the perfect stops to pick up a beer, seltzer, soda or water, as well as popcorn, pistachios and pretzels.

Merchandise 

The UMass Store will have a new location on the east side of the stadium behind section 18.

Traffic Patterns & Parking 

Fans should note that there will be new traffic patterns to expedite the process of parking at McGuirk Alumni Stadium on gamedays.

Of note, University Drive will feature one way traffic going northbound and Fearing Street will be closed from University Drive to Sunset Ave.

Exclusive early parking lot access for season ticket holders who chose to upgrade their parking to Lot 11, or Stadium Drive, will begin 30 minutes prior to when lots open for the general public. 

Specific parking lot instructions will be linked on the back of parking passes via QR codes and added to UMassAthletics.com prior to gameday.

Also new this season, students can purchase a parking pass for Lot 11 on game weeks from the Mullins box office, with a limited number available each week. The passes can be purchased starting Thursday of game week at the Mullins box office. Student cars will need to enter between three and four hours prior to kickoff. Cars will not be allowed to enter lot 11 with less than three hours remaining before kickoff and will not be allowed to leave Lot 11 until halftime.

After a second straight year of receiving more than 50,000 applications for admission, the University of Massachusetts Amherst welcomes a diverse first-year class of more than 5,300 students to campus this week.

The Class of 2028 ranks as the most diverse in the university’s history, with nearly 39% of its 5,350 members composed of ALANA (African, Latino/Hispanic, Asian, Hawaiian/Pacific Islander and Native American) students and nearly 19% of the class being under-represented minority students. Female students account for nearly 53% of the class. 

Once again, the incoming class boasts one of the most stellar academic profiles of any class during the past decade, with the highest combined optionally submitted SAT (1397) and ACT scores (31.4), as well as the second-highest average high school GPA (4.05).

Nearly 70% of the incoming class is comprised of students from Massachusetts, as 3,720 students arrive from within the Bay State, while 1,630 students are from out of state, including 400 international students.

The campus will also welcome nearly 1,000 new transfer students – sporting the highest transfer GPA score (3.48) in the university’s history – to the campus community.

The overall fall undergraduate enrollment at UMass Amherst, including transfer students, is projected to be approximately 22,800 with just over 72% being Massachusetts residents.

Commonwealth Honors College will welcome approximately 700 first-year students. The incoming class touts an outstanding average high school GPA of 4.37 and record-high combined SAT (1437) and ACT scores (33.0). The fall 2024 CHC class also marks the most diverse in the college’s history, with 54% ALANA students and more than a quarter from under-represented groups.

This is the 18^th year that UMass Amherst has offered an Early Action (EA) admission program whereby students apply early for admission and begin receiving notification of their acceptance by mid-December. The number of students using the EA option has increased annually from about 8,000 applicants in 2009 to more than 30,000 this year. More than 60% of prospective students applied for the Class of 2028 through EA, and 3,360 students admitted through EA will enroll in the fall.

As a school leader, what about the following challenges strikes a chord?

• Dr. Brandi Chin’s charter school had won loud praise for its results. But the founding school director still felt her teachers lacked the right supports to fully develop all of the middle school’s students into sophisticated, independent learners.
• Principal Ashley Johnson saw that her team’s instructional coaching was not having the impact on student learning that she had hoped. In February, she shifted her focus from “Did teachers teach it?” to “Did students learn it?”
• And regional instructional superintendent Heather Haines saw that some teachers in 30 district schools she led were unsure how to support students in completing the level of tasks and assignments in a rigorous curriculum.

Each of these leaders faced an immediate threat to their mission to advance equity. Fortunately, their stories don’t stop there. Though the scope of the problem was daunting, they doubled down on focus: they clarified a vision for success, identified high leverage action steps, and created a plan to build staff investment, roll out the changes, monitor implementation, and follow up with adjustments.

In doing so, these leaders carried out what we at Relay Graduate School of Education call a “Reset.” A Reset is a narrowly focused initiative, planned and executed to have a meaningful impact in a short period of time. A Reset plan can be developed in just a few hours, and captured in a few pages. It’s different from long-term strategic planning, which may involve multiple areas of improvement, significant structural changes, and the reallocation of resources. A Reset is an evidence-backed plan to tackle one key area, now – and see results.

Through our leadership programs, we’ve coached thousands of school, district, and network leaders through the Reset process. Since Fall 2020, we have been profiling alumni from our programs, like Dr. Brandi Chin, Ashley Johnson, and Heather Haines, who are leading for student achievement, equity, and wellness amidst turbulent times. In September 2023, Relay alum Courtney Covington was honored with the Early Career Educator of Excellence Award by the Tennessee Teachers of Color Alliance. His principal told the selection committee that he is “a gem.”

Mr. Covington also recently learned that he is one of the top performing educators in the entire network of Rocketship Schools, a charter network with schools across California, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Washington D.C., and Texas. He led his students to 1.37 years of growth last year, with 65% of students meeting their goals. He was tapped to be a part of Rocketship’s leadership development program, Rising Leaders, and he’s studying for his Ed.D at Trevecca Nazarene University.

In other words – Mr. Covington has a lot to be proud of!

But when he thinks about his career as an elementary teacher, it’s the little moments that stand out – like one of his students who entered first grade without being able to read, but who was soon excitedly pulling books off the shelf, and reading signs at the grocery store with her mom. Mr. Covington is a 2021 graduate of Relay’s Master of Arts in Teaching – Teacher Residency program in Memphis Tennessee. At the beginning of the year, Mr. Covington worked as a K-2 ISE (Integrated Special Education) specialist at Rocketship Dream Community Prep in Antioch, TN. His primary responsibility was to work with students on a one-to-one basis or in small groups to support their individual needs. However, due to teacher shortages and receiving his certification for pre-K through 3rd grade, he is now teaching 2nd grade STEM, with ownership of teaching 3 cohorts. Mr. Covington is enjoying being back in the classroom setting.

‍

He has always taught at the elementary level and says that’s where he wants to be – with the youngest students. In college, he considered studying criminal justice or education, but decided on education so that he could influence students early in their lives.

‍

“If I am the teacher who can give them a good foundation, that’s a child I can maybe save right there.” Mr. Covington says.

‍

He enjoys being the Black male role model that he needed as a kid, as well as building an inclusive community where all students feel they are loved.

‍

“In my classroom, we would say: we are a community, we celebrate differences, we are a team, we are all special, we care, we share, we listen,” he says.

‍

Mr. Covington says that is one of the things he learned at Relay: how to authentically build relationships with students, and how to incorporate the things that kids are interested in, into his lessons. At Relay he also learned how to write an effective lesson plan, thinking about the objective and how to break it down piece by piece.

‍

He especially liked that the program was hands-on, with lots of opportunities to practice, ad well as to connect with other like-minded, fired-up teachers. And on those hard days when he would feel drained, logging on to his virtual classes was often a great opportunity to receive support, or get re-energized by something someone said.

“We would do ice-breakers and community builders, and one of my favorites was ‘What is one thing we could do right now to make your day go well?’”

‍

Mr. Covington has dreams of one day being in district leadership, working for a state education department, or teaching early childhood education at university. His leadership program and Ed.D are helping to prepare him for that path. For right now, he is enjoying helping his kiddos succeed every day.

The Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory recently detected the state’s first case of chronic wasting disease and is now gearing up for increased surveillance and testing of deer populations throughout the region.

The laboratory, part of Washington State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, initially detected the positive case July 26 in a batch of samples submitted by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, a key partner in disease monitoring efforts across the state. Additional testing confirmed the result July 30.

“With the first confirmed case in Washington, the importance of regular surveillance and testing is more evident than ever. The proactive monitoring efforts enable early detection and a timely response, which are crucial for managing and controlling the spread of this disease,” said Korakrit Poonsuk, WADDL Immunodiagnostics section head.

Chronic wasting disease – which has now been documented in wild or captive cervids in 35 states, including Montana and Idaho, and four Canadian provinces – is a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy disease that affects deer, elk, and moose. Caused by abnormal proteins called prions, CWD leads to fatal neurological damage. There is currently no cure for the disease, and it can only be definitively diagnosed through laboratory testing of lymph nodes or brain tissue.

Although CWD poses a serious threat to cervid populations, there is no evidence of transmission to humans or domestic animals. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, however, recommends against consuming meat from positive animals to minimize risk.

As a leading animal disease diagnostic laboratory, WADDL is a member of the United States Department of Agriculture Animal Plant and Health Inspection Service’s National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN). The network, comprising 60 animal disease diagnostic laboratories nationwide, is dedicated to the early detection of, response to and recovery from animal health emergencies.

WADDL serves as the primary CWD testing laboratory for Washington, California and some tribal organizations, playing a pivotal role in the wildlife health monitoring efforts in the Pacific Northwest.

WADDL employs two advanced diagnostic methods to test for CWD: the Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) for initial screening and Immunohistochemistry (IHC) for confirmatory testing.

The white-tail deer that tested positive was found dead in February in the suburban area of Fairwood in Spokane County, within Game Management Unit 124. The lymph nodes of the deer were batched by WDFW and submitted to WADDL in July along with other samples for testing allowing for efficient, high-volume analysis. Initially tested with ELISA, the positive result was then confirmed with immunohistochemistry at WADDL two business days later.

“WADDL’s advanced and comprehensive testing services helps ensure accurate detection and confirmation of cases of chronic wasting disease, which will be essential for effective disease management and control as we move forward,” Poonsuk said.

In 2023, WADDL secured new funding from USDA-APHIS that allowed investments into improving CWD testing capacity and efficiency through securing state-of-the-art equipment and training personnel to handle the increased testing demands. In addition, sample submission, testing and reporting workflows were streamlined for reduced turnaround times for test results.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Most of the Washington State University Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine’s inaugural class of doctors are choosing to practice in Washington as they complete their post-graduate training in residency programs across the country and decide where to go as fully qualified physicians.

According to a recent alumni survey, 74% of respondents plan to go into practice, with 94% planning to practice in Washington or considering it. Nearly a third plan to practice in eastern Washington or other rural areas, bringing more primary care physicians to underserved regions of the state.

“This is the realization of what we were founded to do,” said Leila Harrison, vice dean for Admissions, Student Affairs, and Alumni Engagement.

For Dr. Brent Conrad, the choice was an easy one. Raised on a small wheat farm near Colfax, Washington, he knew he wanted to be a doctor from an early age after performing basic first aid on an elementary school classmate with a skinned knee and shadowing doctors as a high school student at a Colfax clinic.

He’ll now be practicing at that same clinic as a physician. After earning his medical degree at WSU and completing Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center’s Family Medicine Residency in Spokane, Dr. Conrad will practice at Whitman Hospital and Medical Clinics in Colfax and Tekoa.

 “I used to daydream about walking around those halls and being one of the docs, and now it’s actually happening,” he said. “I’m excited to be back, and I think the community is excited too. I wouldn’t have made it this far if it wasn’t for the people of Colfax and Whitman County who really encouraged me and supported me all along the way.”

After earning a medical degree, doctors complete an additional three to seven years of training in their chosen specialty through a residency program as part of the process to become a licensed physician. Approximately half of WSU’s inaugural class of 60 medical students chose the primary care specialties of family medicine, internal medicine, and pediatrics, which require three years of training. With their residencies complete, they can now practice medicine independently or pursue additional specialized training.  

The WSU College of Medicine was established in 2015 after the Washington State Legislature authorized WSU to create an accredited medical school with the aim to train more physicians to serve the state. The MD program uses a holistic admissions process that considers applicants’ ties to Washington and commitment to serving the state’s medically underserved and historically marginalized communities.

That holistic admissions process is working. Graduates will practice in communities across Washington where they have strong personal or professional ties.

Seattle native Dr. Michaela Fallon plans to continue serving the patients she established relationships with while completing the Swedish Cherry Hill Family Medicine Residency’s rural training track, working and volunteering in Port Angeles and nearby towns.

“I was born and raised in Washington. This is my home, and these are the communities I want to give back to,” she said.

While many graduates leave the state for residency and may not return immediately, most report planning to return in the future. Dr. Charlotte Cronenweth completed her internal medicine training at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland this year and plans to practice in the area as a hospitalist while her husband, who she met as a medical student at WSU, completes his residency there.

“We’re both looking forward to eventually making our way back to Washington,” she said. “Our ultimate goal is to serve the communities that trained us.”

Successive alumni classes are also in the process of completing their training and will eventually join their peers in the health care workforce.

“I hope to see each and every one of our graduates here practicing in Washington state,” said Vice Chair of Pediatrics Dr. Chris Anderson, “but my hope is that wherever they do land that they always keep our mission close at heart, our commitment to the care of underserved and rural communities.”

Dodson Peterson arrived to WSU in the fall of 2022 as is based on the Ste. Michelle Wine Estates WSU Wine Science Center in Tri-Cities. She previously worked as an associate professor of viticulture at California Polytechnic State University.

The 30-year history of Washington State University’s Terrell Library is one of adaptation, according to Phil Gruen, a professor in the School of Design and Construction. Terrell’s completion in 1994 helped save the library system; the existing Holland Library, completed in 1950, was running out of room for books by the early 1990s. Today, digitization, the internet, smart phones, and artificial intelligence have made the need for more book space less pressing. Again, Terrell Library pivoted to meet a different kind of need.

“Space has become more available to create study lounges, collaborative areas and stations, student services, centers, such as the Center for Digital Scholarship and Curation, and maker-type rooms, such as the Dimensions Lab,” Gruen said. “As a result, the library remains one of the most active buildings on campus.”

Gruen will present a lecture, “Spaces of Knowledge: Designing the Future and Past of the Library,” at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27, in the Terrell atrium, part of WSU Libraries’ celebration of the library’s 30-year anniversary. A reception follows in the Holland Library lobby’s west entrance. Both lecture and reception are free and open to the public.

WSU Libraries of the future

Gruen suspects more spaces can be created in Terrell and Holland Libraries. Possibilities include the Terrell atrium space under the skylight and the area near Holland Library’s original entrance, which will be accessible to the outside for the first time in 30 years after the lecture.

“If we do not yet know what the future holds for university libraries, we do know that there will always be a need to find places to study or gather, and WSU Libraries have the space, and the spaces, to accommodate that need,” he said.

Gruen added that WSU Libraries seek to preserve, repurpose, or reuse historic resources rather than knocking them down and starting over.

“Terrell and Holland Libraries prove that they have stood the test of time,” he said.

Always the heart of campus

Bonny Boyan, WSU Libraries’ assistant to the dean, began her first day of work in the WSU Libraries on Aug. 25, 1994, the day the “New Library” was dedicated. She recalled the heightened enthusiasm for the new library, and the dedication event, held on the new library lawn roof, was an enormous success.

“I remember being impressed that the staff all seemed to be united together for the same cause,” she said.

When the library was named after former WSU president Glenn Terrell in 2006, his portrait was installed in the hallway near the entrance to the reference area, where it remains today. Terrell came to Pullman for the dedication, and after seeing the portrait, he asked for a private meeting with the library director, Boyan said.

“He was concerned that the portrait didn’t look at all like him,” she said. “Everyone else thought the artist captured his likeness perfectly!”

Terrell Library continues to be the preferred study and gathering spot on campus, Boyan said. “While walking around campus, I often overhear conversations that focus on the libraries. Holland and Terrell Libraries will always be the heart of the campus.”
