Our goal? Boost the community’s RPKI-ROA adoption for IPv4 addresses from 21% to 45%, closing the gap with the global internet.

Why RPKI

RPKI-ROA allows the resource holders of network IP addresses to specify the valid networks, or origin ASNs, authorized to announce their routes. Network operators can use this information to identify invalid routes, whether the result of misconfiguration or route hijacking.

How to Create an RPKI-ROA

A diverse group of students participated in a stem cell training pilot program at UC Merced this summer.

It was the second summer for the Training Undergrads in Stem Cell Engineering and Biology (TUSCEB) program, funded through the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine (CIRM). It’s a collaborative effort between the schools of Natural Sciences and Engineering led by professors Kara McCloskey and Jennifer Manilay and serviced through the university’s Health Sciences Research Institute (HSRI).

Ten students per cohort participate in the program, which develops skills for biotechnology and research-based activities across three academic semesters and two summer sessions.

The program provides valuable opportunities for research in various science disciplines and introduces students to potential career paths in regenerative medicine, according to its website.

“TUSCEB was an appealing program to me as it is my dream to eventually work in the biotech industry,” said Rachel Kalthof, a UC Merced student from Fremont majoring in molecular and cell biology. “The program is dedicated to equipping undergraduate students with employable and relevant skills in the fields of regenerative medicine and biotechnology to satisfy industry hiring needs.”

Ryan Schwerdtfeger said he learned about the program during his second year and threw together a quick application on the last day but wasn’t accepted. That rejection motivated him to work on his application ahead of the following year’s application cycle.

“I explored it a little more and saw what skills I wanted to develop,” said Schwerdtfeger, who came to UC Merced from San Diego. “OK, I know I want to do this now. I took it very seriously and I got in the second time.”

In addition to the core curriculum and a capstone project, students engage in supplementary experiences integrated throughout the program. These experiences encompass undergraduate research, external industry internships, professional development, one-on-one mentoring, patient and health care engagement activities and community outreach efforts.

Schwerdtfeger said students learned several aspects of working with stem cells. “We learned flow cytometry (a process using lasers to detect and analyze chemical and physical characteristics of cells). It’s a valuable skill in industrial practices,” he said.

“It’s a lot of technical knowledge all at once,” Schwerdtfeger continued. “But once you understand it, it’s such a cool and fascinating contraption – like the fact we can analyze single cells at a time.”

Though the program isn’t easy, it is rewarding.

Kalthof said the most appealing part of the program was the opportunity to meet and be matched with industry partners through eight- to 10-week internships.

“Another appealing part of the program is the $18,000 ayear stipend, which is disseminated over the length of the program,” Kalthof said. “I would recommend the TUSCEB program for biology or bioengineering students with an interest in stem cells andor regenerative medicine who are looking to work industry jobs in the future.”

TUSCEB also partnered with the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Center’s Summer Undergraduate Research Institute (SURI). The institute provided information regarding graduate school and hosted activities including overviews of graduate programs, graduate alumni panels and an end-of-summer symposium. SURI also provided feedback on curriculum vitae, personal statement and statement of purpose drafts.

“As a first-generation college student, graduate school had remained one big mystery to me,” Kalthof said. “This summer has really geared me toward critically thinking about my future and how best to pave the path I wish to see for myself. It is my goal to get into a top graduate program where I will pursue an advanced degree.”

UC Merced was the site of the 22nd Molecular Education and Research Consortium in Undergraduate computational chemistRY (MERCURY) Conference held in mid-July.

“MERCURY is delighted to have the University of California, Merced, host this year’s annual meeting on the campus,” said Furman University chemistry Professor George Shields, consortium founder and director of its executive committee. “The MERCURY Consortium was founded in 2001 with the goal of establishing research collaborations among computational chemistry faculty from primarily undergraduate institutions.”

Faculty in the consortium initiate research projects for undergraduates to provide them with invaluable skills and knowledge.

“We have found that when we have diverse groups of students, we do better science and publish lots of papers,” Shields said. “The more diverse the groups are, the more excellent your work tends to be.”

Consortium members, now totaling 44, collaborate on grant proposals and share National Science Foundation-funded computational facilities.

“We write grants together to apply for computing resources, that our individual campuses wouldn’t be able to support but can be supported as a group,” said theoretical and computational chemistry Professor Ashley Ringer McDonald from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. “We also host the MERCURY Conference every summer — a venue for undergraduate students to present their work and to learn from experts in the field.”

This year’s conference was sponsored by UC Merced’s Graduate Division, School of Natural Sciences, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Center for Chemical Computation and Theory, and Cyberinfrastructure and Research Technologies; the Molecular Sciences Software Institute (MolSSI); OpenEye Scientific; and Overleaf.

“We are thrilled to have these outstanding scholars visit our campus, where we emphasize excellence and inclusivity,” Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies and chemistry Professor Hrant Hratchian said. “The theoretical computational chemistry community is one of the friendliest communities I know. It’s big, bold, diverse and varied in so many ways and we all get together and have a lot of fun.”

Nearly 140 people from universities across the nation, including 75 undergraduate students, attended the three-day conference. It featured six faculty or industry guest speakers, networking events, undergraduate lightning talks and poster sessions ranging from computational research into Lewy body dementia and Alzheimer’s disease to cell signaling and oscillatory behaviors.

Some conference attendees arrived on campus early to attend the two-day Molecular Sciences Software Institute workshop.

The conference was preceded by the two-day Molecular Sciences Software Institute workshop, that is based at Virginia Tech and aims to improve software, education and training in all computational molecular sciences.

“The focus is on training students in best practices of software development and cyber infrastructure skills, so they are knowledgeable about how to write software in a way that’s usable for people and maintainable in the long term,” said Ringer McDonald, who coordinated the MERCURY conference. “We had an excellent turnout for the workshop; we had a record 61 students attend.”

The importance of networking to meet new people in the computational chemistry field was emphasized throughout the week.

“The most valuable thing about attending a conference is talking to people you don’t get to see every day. They’ve gone through what you’re going through now,” Hratchian said. “I’ve learned that we all have unique pathways, but if you develop a big enough community, somebody somewhere has figured out that one step you’re stuck on. Lean into that; talk to people and share experiences.”

As classes begin Wednesday for UC Merced’s 20th academic year, the campus and its offerings continue to grow to meet the needs of students and the community at large.

Edwin Lopez was so excited for his college experience to begin that he volunteered to help his fellow students move in last week. The first-year student from Firebaugh was set to attend Fresno State when he got a scholarship offer from UC Merced he said he couldn’t refuse.

“This campus feels like home,” he said. As soon as he visited, he knew he wanted to attend and couldn’t wait to start.

Lopez and thousands of students starting or continuing their UC Merced adventures are finding plenty of activities to welcome them back.

“We’re thrilled to welcome our newest Bobcats to campus and kick off the fall 2024 semester,” interim Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Brian O’Bruba said. “Our staff from across campus has organized more than 80 events such as workshops, athletic games and cultural activities.”

Students will see and hear signs of the university’s continued expansion, with construction of the Medical Education Building underway. Scheduled to open in 2026, the building will host numerous health-related numerous, including the undergraduate phase of SJV PRIME+, which packages years of undergraduate and medical school training within UC Merced and UCSF Fresno. A second cohort of students in the program begins this fall.

An expanded Honors Program will help dozens of students achieve lofty academic goals.

“We’re excited to welcome 60 Honors Program students to campus,” said Amy Bergerson, vice provost and dean of undergraduate education. “While Honors students have been part of the UC Merced community in the past, the full Honors Program experience is new and includes a range of programs and activities to engage students with faculty and staff from across campus.”

Many of those Honors students will be part of the new Honors Program Living Learning Community. LLCs, as they’re called, offer students the opportunity to live and socialize with others who share their academic goals and personal interests.

UC Merced’s growth isn’t limited to academics.

Preparations are underway for the university’s athletic teams to begin competition in Division II of the National Collegiate Athletics Association, starting in the 2025-26 school year. This will be the last year UC Merced’s student athletes compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, where the Bobcats have won 13 conference championships and eight tournament championships, as well as three NAIA National Championship Opening Round games.

In the arts, plans call for an exciting exhibit co-hosted by UC Merced’s art galleries and the Merced Multicultural Arts Center downtown. And a new sculpture honoring mascot Rufus will be unveiled this fall.

The university’s online presence also has expanded. Anyone who would like to visit but can’t make it to Merced can now click on the College Tour, which shares the stories of the university and some of its students. A new campus climate initiative is being introduced this semester regarding freedom of expression in an effort to alert student, staff and faculty to their rights and responsibilities.

After a nice summer break, faculty and staff look forward to the campus bustling once again with returning and new students.

Gabriela Melchor, 18, is one of those students. The first-year applied math major from Visalia said she was already enjoying taking part in the activities offered around campus.

“I love the area,”‘ she said. “I like how centered the campus is, and how the dorms have easy access to everything.

“It’s been so great meeting new people and having a new experience.”

UC Merced said “welcome” to its 2,400 new students Tuesday as only UC Merced can, with a joyous and colorful Scholars Bridge Crossing ceremony that symbolizes their transformation into Bobcats at the San Joaquin Valley’s only research university.

Hundreds of those first-year or transfer students gathered in yellow T-shirts on the lawn next to the Pavilion dining hall in preparation for the crossing.

“I don’t know of any other institution in higher education that has something like this,” Chancellor Juan Sánchez Muñoz told them. “Take pictures, take selfies, and years from now you’ll look back and remember that morning when you crossed the bridge and began your academic journey at UC Merced.”

Muñoz, along with Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Betsy Dumont and the deans of the university’s three schools, led the students up Scholars Lane and over the bridge that crosses Fairfield Canal. Along the lane, scores of well-wishers cheered and waved signs signifying support from current students, staff and faculty across campus.

On the other side of the bridge, three members of the Korie family watched, smiling, as the parade of new ’Cats approached. On Sunday, they came with new student Chimka Korie from their Santa Clarita home and helped him move into a residence hall.

“Our son is very creative. He’s a thinker. We wanted a school that would nurture him,” said Chimka’s mother, Ijendu, watching with her husband, Theophane, and their younger daughter, Ije. “So, a school that can be a family. A smaller school, a newer school. We also are excited about the research, so his ideas can get attention.”

On the other side of the bridge, Jeffery Winters held up a sign that read “Woot. Bobcats. Woot.” Winters is entering his fourth year at UC Merced, having transferred from Fresno City College. He works as a student systems administrator in the Office of Information Technology.

“I didn’t want to be too far from home,” said Winters, who lives in Fresno. “I was looking at different UCs and was very impressed with UC Merced.”

After the bridge crossing, the new students completed the tradition that started in 2005 by passing through the arches of the Beginnings sculpture on the Carol Tomlinson-Keasey Quad.

The university community doubled down on celebrating its new students with the Pawrade, a procession of 32 carts decorated and represented by various offices, departments and divisions. After a raucous roll across the bridge, the carts were parked around the quad so students could admire them and vote for a favorite.

A few yards from the parked carts, Anthony Baca sat on a step outside the Science and Engineering 2 Building. Baca will commute from his home in Ceres. He’s older than most first-years, putting in five years in the Navy straight out of high school. He served on the USS Green Bay, a ship that performs as a floating dock for amphibious landing craft.

Baca was an electrician on the Green Bay. He plans to major in electrical engineering.

“When I was in the Navy, I was thinking about coming here,” he said.

Another first-year, Colin Dennis, comes from Castro Valley. He also plans to major in electrical engineering.

“I like how diverse the community is, along with the opportunities that UC Merced has for students,” Dennis said. “And I just like how quiet the campus is. It’s really chill.”

On another part of the quad, two new first-years, Griselda Martinez and Hugo Rivera, strolled hand-in-hand on the quad. Both are from Cutler-Orosi, a small community on Fresno County’s agricultural east side. Both are looking at civil engineering majors.

As others said Tuesday, UC Merced’s accessible size and fresh appearance were attractive.

As Martinez said, “It’s really cute.”

Dr. Stefan Schwartze – zur Person

Dr. Stefan Schwartze, Jahrgang 1966, studierte Rechtswissenschaften an den Universitäten Münster, Mannheim und Heidelberg und promovierte an der Universität Bochum. Nach Tätigkeiten bei der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft sowie beim Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung war der gebürtige Wuppertaler von 2003 bis 2008 administratives Mitglied des Stiftungsvorstands des Max-Delbrück-Centrums für molekulare Medizin in Berlin und von 2008 bis 2011 Kanzler der Westfälischen Wilhelms-Universität Münster. Am Deutschen GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam bekleidete Schwartze seit 2011 das Amt des administrativen Vorstands. My middle name is also my Chinese name, Mintao (敏涛), meaning ‘clever wave’. In Chinese culture, it’s common to share a theme in names passed down through generations. On my dad’s side, all males traditionally get Tao (涛), and his name is Xiantao (先涛), meaning ‘first wave’. However, my dad, excited about his first-born child as a US immigrant, decided to break years of tradition and gave me the name Mintao to paint my future in the wave of innovation.

Embodying the spirit of my name, I ventured into the traditionally male-dominated tech industry. In high school, I joined the FIRST robotics team. In college, I chose to study Electrical and Computer Engineering, even though my dad, an engineer himself, had reservations about women in the field. Eventually, I became a software engineer at Google, where I was the only woman on my team. Now, I am pursuing my dream at Harvard, with plans to become an entrepreneur one day.

Although my dad and I may have cultural differences, I have to remember he is the ‘first wave’ – the generation that overcame the Cultural Revolution and gave me a life in the US. By building upon the wave of opportunities my father created, I strive to honor his wisdom while shaping my own Chinese American identity to share with future generations to come.”
