How Tutoring for College Students Sparks Success

As a parent, you want your college student to receive the support they need to succeed in their classes, including tutoring for subjects in which they may need additional assistance or encouragement. Yet even when college students understand the benefits of tutoring, many don’t reach out to connect with tutoring services. This might be due to shyness about meeting with someone they don’t know, embarrassment that their grades aren’t as strong as they would like, or fear they may do poorly in a class even with tutoring support.

But tutoring for college students can be the key to academic improvement. And it’s not just for students who are struggling!

Tutoring gives students an opportunity to discuss academic content and talk through their understanding of that content with another person. Yes, it can help students boost their grade, but more importantly, tutoring assists with assignment comprehension and knowledge retention. Here’s what to know about the opportunities tutoring can provide during the college years.

Tutoring Can Help Improve Academic Success

Research from the Council of Learning Assistance and Developmental Education Associations showed that students who receive support have higher grade point averages and are more likely to stay in school. The study also found that with academic assistance, students are more likely to persist and succeed in college.

Students get a dual benefit from tutoring. They can focus on better understanding the subject matter through tutoring sessions—and these benefits carry over. When students are studying on their own, they can focus and stay organized more effectively because they have someone holding them accountable.

Through one-on-one tutoring, students are also encouraged to think deeply about what they understand and how they learn best. A tutor will likely ask, “What would you like to accomplish today?” Students learn to identify and articulate what they want to review or where they need help.

Students might think they don’t have time for tutoring—that they would be better off studying on their own. But tutoring can help them master their coursework, so it’s worth the investment in time and effort.

3 Reasons Students Should Take Advantage of Tutoring

Tutors can help students master the fundamentals of their coursework, so they have a solid foundation when the subject matter gets more complex. Here are three key ways tutoring can help:

  1. Improved performance. Working with a tutor offers additional individualized learning to support the classroom experience. It can also help students improve their grades on assignments.
  2. Enhanced organization. A tutor can help your student stay on track with scheduling and completing assignments.
  3. Comfort and confidence. Students who might not ask a question in class may feel more comfortable asking questions with a tutor.

How Students Can Connect with Tutoring

Azusa Pacific University is committed to helping its students thrive and succeed academically. The Tutoring Center at APU is a key part of that commitment. The Tutoring Center offers different types of tutoring for college students, including:

  • One-on-one peer tutoring support
  • Weekly group study sessions with peer leaders
  • Supplemental instruction for traditionally difficult classes

Students can meet with a tutor up to two times per week. And students who have note-taking accommodations can use Otter, a note-taking service that records and transcribes live conversations.

APU offers tutoring for a range of courses, from biology to psychology to music. To find out if a subject is available for tutoring, visit the Tutoring Center’s list of available courses. If a course isn’t on the list, your student can request tutoring. The Tutoring Center staff will do their best to match your student with a tutor. Additionally, students can schedule a tutoring appointment online or email tutoring@apu.edu and let them know which subjects they would like help with.

“All students can benefit from tutoring! Successful students engage others in their learning and seek help when they need it,” said Beth Rivas, interim director for the Tutoring Center.

The university’s Writing Center also offers tutoring for writing and students can make an appointment online, noted Ana Quiroz, a coordinator in the Office of Accessibility and Disability Resources. The Writing Center even includes a Speaking Center, where students can get tips on how to give a presentation. “You can apply at any point that you’re in classes,” Quiroz said. “Being proactive is key. If you’re interested in receiving assistance in a certain area, start the process.”

Students with disabilities can connect with the Office of Accessibility and Disability Resources for academic coaching in study skills, organization, scheduling, communication, self-advocacy, note-taking, and managing college-level courses. Academic coaching is available online and via phone during remote learning seasons.

How an APU Graduate’s Public Health Degree Prepared Her for the Pandemic

Azusa Pacific University graduate Talene Zadekian, MPH ’20, quickly saw how her public health degree would shape her perspective of the pandemic from the beginning. She was completing an international health course in Panama with fellow APU Master of Public Health (MPH) and nursing students when California issued its state of emergency in March 2020.

Zadekian returned home the following day and was surprised that TSA at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) didn’t take the group’s temperatures or ask about their travel. This potential screening gap left Zadekian mulling over solutions: “How can we use public health research to further prepare international airports, such as LAX, to both prevent and quickly respond in the case of a pandemic?” she wondered.

“It is our job as rising public health professionals to constantly be educated, prepared, and ready to step into action,” Zadekian said.

COVID-19 Highlights the Need for Public Health Professionals

After studying public health during the COVID-19 pandemic, Zadekian knows how critical public health research is to creating guidelines and making policy decisions. Her training also helped her see how the public easily misinterprets health statistics. “Clear health communications from trusted public health leaders are more essential than ever,” she said.

These factors led Zadekian to enroll in an advanced biostatistics and epidemiology course taught by Sanggon Nam, PhD, MS. “The skills obtained in this course allowed me to quickly understand and interpret statistics released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC),” she said. Zadekian uses her newfound knowledge to help her family and friends understand data better. “This really showed me how much I enjoy being able to use my knowledge to educate and inform the public.”

Public Health Is an International Need

COVID-19 has underscored the necessity of public health professionals worldwide, and Zadekian saw firsthand how urbanization impacts public health. “After working in Panama’s remote indigenous communities, I realized that remote tropical communities face a higher risk of malnutrition and neglected tropical diseases,” she said.

She worked with various indigenous Ngäbe-Buglé communities there, where patients with life-threatening injuries couldn’t get proper treatment. The community had limited medical supplies, and patients couldn’t afford to travel to a different hospital. She also witnessed children playing in the muddy jungle terrain without shoes, which increased their risk of helminth worms, parasites that can cause diseases and even death in the developing world, according to the CDC.

Using a Public Health Degree to Serve the Greater Good

Even after the COVID-19 crisis is handled, many urgent public health issues will still be taking place around the world.

A public health professional can work in many fields. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects healthcare occupations to grow 15 percent by 2029. Even more importantly, a career in public health allows individuals to care for and serve communities.

Keep Reading: Where an MPH Degree Can Take You

“At APU, our public health students collaborate across healthcare disciplines and actively work with their counterparts in nursing, physical therapy, social work, and more,” said Marissa Brash, DrPH, EdD, MPH, CPH, chair of the Department of Public Health in Azusa Pacific’s School of Nursing. “Students benefit from this direct involvement with various disciplines, because that is exactly how they will function when they are working in their field. Collaborating with different sectors of health care provides an opportunity to understand how they fit into the system and can be a vital and effective liaison in the medical community, offering data and evidence to inform medical practices.”

For example, Zadekian also served as an outreach specialist for Reach Out. She coordinated a youth mental health awareness program in high schools across the Inland Empire with the goal to create a culturally competent mental health workforce.

“In the future, I would like to be part of the next generation of health policy leaders,” Zadekian said. She is pursuing a career in health communications with the ultimate goal of becoming a public health advisor working closely with policymakers.

As Zadekian demonstrates, with an MPH, you can serve people in many places, from Panama’s jungles to your hometown’s high schools.

“Being an MPH student during the COVID-19 pandemic further confirmed my passion to pursue a career in health communications and health policy with an emphasis on international infectious diseases,” she said. “The public health field not only improves quality of life for others but also enables health and human security through evidence-based research.”

Student Tips: How to Use Social Media to Find a Job

Social media is an amazing tool for finding and landing your first job out of college. Not only can it help you discover potential opportunities, it can also help those opportunities discover you. In fact, as many as 84 percent of companies use social media to recruit and hire for jobs, according to the Society for Human Resource Management.

But there’s a difference between using social media and knowing how to use social media well—especially when it comes to finding opportunities and getting hired. Here are some tips for students that can help you position yourself professionally and stand out online.

Delete Inappropriate and Old Content

First things first: getting rid of old, outdated, or potentially inappropriate content is something every student should do before searching for jobs.

“This generation of digitally minded students is very savvy when it comes to using social media,” said Allison Oster, public relations manager and an adjunct professor who teaches Public Relations and Social Media in the Department of Communication Studies at Azusa Pacific University. “Yet there is an important distinction between being comfortable with using social media and being intentional about using it with career opportunities in mind.”

Keep Reading: Your Social Media Footprint: 4 Tips for Being Conscientious

When reviewing your social media footprint, try to consider everything from the point of view of a potential employer. Ask questions like:

  • What does each image or piece of content say about you?
  • What overall impression do you get when going through your social media pages?
  • Would you want to hire you?

https://ufl.pb.unizin.org/exambook/chapter/sap-e_hanabw_13-dumps-pdf-effortless-learning-for-certification-exam/

Doing this with a trusted peer can also be helpful. Oster suggested finding a close, trusted friend, family member, or mentor who can help act as a social media accountability partner. “Ask them to look at your posts with a critical eye and provide you with regular feedback,” she said. “Are you posting content that truly reflects who you are and your values?”

Follow Influencers and Pages in Your Industry

Social media allows you to connect with people who already do the work you’d like to do one day. It’s also a great place to learn about available positions and trends in your industry. To get involved and learn new things, consider following influencers and topical pages in your chosen field.

One easy way to do this is to search through relevant hashtags. For example, if your goal is to find a marketing job in Los Angeles, try searching the hashtag #losangelesmarketing. You might be surprised by how much relevant content you find. It’s wise to do this type of research across all the social media platforms you’re on.

Keep Reading: Virtual Networking: 4 Tips for College Students and Recent Grads

Pay particular attention to LinkedIn. It’s not only a social media platform but an active job board where thousands of companies post work opportunities and information about themselves regularly. It’s a fantastic resource for those who know how to use social media and want to network in their industry. LinkedIn is also used by recruiters, so in addition to keeping your profile up to date, make sure you add content and join in the conversation. Reshare articles, news, reports, or other content relevant to you and your chosen field.

Besides LinkedIn, focus on the platform(s) best suited for your career interests. For example, artists will likely have the most success on visual platforms such as Instagram, YouTube, or TikTok.

“To build a successful page you will need to have consistency in posting,” said Tony Bancroft, an assistant professor in the Department of Cinematic Arts at APU, well-known animator with more than 30 years of experience, and an active social media influencer in the animation industry (you can find him @pumbaaguy on Instagram and @pumbaaguy1 on Twitter). “Also, you’ll learn quickly which posts are more liked than others. Build your audience based on what you want to put out into the world and create your own brand. Building a following does matter, but don’t let it go to your head. Your followers are like agents working for you to help recommend you for jobs, support your ambitions, and inspire you.”

And remember, it never hurts to send a polite message to see if someone’s hiring, either—they might just be flattered by your communication and query. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and attempt to make a few inroads.

Just Be Yourself

Social media is a great opportunity to brand yourself. It’s a place where you can upload or link to your portfolio, share your résumé, or create content that lets people know what you’re all about. However, at the same time, you want to avoid over-branding or trying too hard to seem employable.

“I know of large numbers of artists getting jobs at Disney, Pixar, Netflix, etc. because their work was discovered first on social media,” said Bancroft. “But just as important as it is for the student to post their work, social media is oftentimes the first glimpse into who you really are outside of what your résumé says.”

Here’s a secret that most students only really learn after college: Employers aren’t looking to hire the perfect human being. They’re looking for qualified, educated candidates—ones just like you! Focus on presenting your best self and feel confident in what you have to offer.

Honoring Our Educators: 4 Ideas for Teacher Appreciation Week

Each year, Teacher Appreciation Week serves to honor all educators for the important work they do and the difference they make in others’ lives. Educators deserve year-round praise for their dedication and perseverance, but this particular week (typically observed the first week of May) is an opportunity for students and parents to do something extra special for them.

Anita Fitzgerald Henck, PhD, dean of APU’s School of Education noted that after 14 months of online and hybrid teaching, this Teacher Appreciation Week 2021 will be especially encouraging to K-12 teachers. “What a great year to celebrate creative teachers who have invested deeply in delivering quality education to children who have been learning remotely, amidst families juggling computers and internet connectivity, and parents working from home,” she said. “I encourage you to adopt the ideas below to thank a teacher.”

If you’re looking for new ideas for Teacher Appreciation Week, there are myriad ways to thank the educators who had an impact on your life. Check out the four ideas listed to get started.

1. Involve School Administration

When thinking of ideas for Teacher Appreciation Week, many involve gestures that students and their parents can make to show their gratitude. However, it’s also a great idea to make sure school administrators recognize teachers’ efforts.

Consider writing school administrators (such as principals or deans) to praise your teachers. It’s a great way to make sure teachers get recognition for their work that later reflects well on their professional careers.

2. Donate Supplies and Resources

Most elementary and secondary school teachers use their own money to buy supplies to support their students’ education, including items like Kleenex, cleaning wipes, pencils or pens, and folders. You can help ease their costs by donating the supplies they need for the rest of the school year (or even extras to help them prepare for the next school year).

To make things easier for teachers, ask for a list of supplies they need. You can even share the list with other parents and organize a donation drive to cover more supplies and avoid donating repeat items.

3. Treat a Teacher

Treat a teacher by taking a few minutes to send an e-gift card for a local coffee shop, dessert shop, or even lunch so they can stop and pick up their favorite treat during their break. Think of it as the modern take on giving a teacher an apple! You don’t have to spend a lot, but the small gesture will be sure to brighten their day.

You can also show your gratitude and enthusiasm by actively participating in class. If you don’t normally speak up, try making an effort to participate more and get the most out of your classroom discussions. Your teacher or professor will notice.

Additionally, if you are at school, make time to ask a question, say hello, or thank them for a particular lesson or topic you enjoyed. Teachers appreciate hearing that their work is impacting students’ learning in a positive way. So reach out, get to know them, and tell them how much you appreciate them.

4. Continue the Gift of Teaching

College and high school students can honor teachers by sharing their knowledge with classmates. Students can continue the gift of teaching by forming study groups or tutoring students who could use a helping hand. Older students, in particular, can volunteer to tutor younger students in subjects they studied previously. As for parents, they can volunteer as experts in their fields and lead discussions about topics they specialize in, allowing teachers to open their classrooms to others.

Time is a valuable gift—by donating your own time and knowledge, you’ll let your favorite teachers know just how much you appreciate the effort they put in every day. Paying it forward is a great way to honor them.

The Benefits of Transferring: 3 Reasons You Shouldn’t Wait

Have you been thinking about making a change and enrolling at a different school? Maybe your current college doesn’t quite feel like the place where you belong. Or, perhaps you’ve been studying at a community college with the goal of transferring all along.

Whatever the reason, the right time to transfer is now, and the benefits of transferring soon are plentiful. Not only can it help you cross the finish line with your degree, but it may also better position you for hiring as employers recover from the pandemic and plan their paths forward.

If you took a break from academics during the pandemic and are looking to return, you’re not alone. “We are emerging from a period of uncertainty, and students are focused on getting back into their educational journeys, which are really important to them,” said Peter Lujan, assistant director of transfer recruitment at APU’s Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

Others may be returning to school after a longer time away from their studies and seeking new opportunities for career advancement with a bachelor’s degree in-hand.

Recognizing that the needs of transfer students are complex, Azusa Pacific University offers multiple transfer pathways, including options for students seeking a traditional undergraduate experience on the university’s main campus. For students needing more flexibility to juggle their existing life commitments, studying online or at a regional campus are other popular pathways at APU. Each path includes individualized support the entire way.

Here are three reasons why you shouldn’t wait to start the transfer process.

1. You Can Prepare for an Evolving Job Market

Economic recovery is under way and the number of available jobs is growing. Transferring puts you in the best position to finish your degree and be ready to enter or advance in your field. APU ensures that you can graduate on-time by guaranteeing availability for the classes you need to graduate.

Keep Reading: Take Control: How to Set Academic Goals in 2021 and Beyond

Transferring sooner also means you spend more time learning from the faculty at APU who are experts in their fields and eager to share with you the knowledge and connections they’ve acquired. You may even have the opportunity conduct research under the mentorship of a professor.

“Faculty are engaged with prospective students right from the start,” said Bonnie Nakashimada, senior director of recruitment for APU’s Graduate and Professional Admissions and Regional Campuses. “They are happy to meet with you and listen and help figure out where you’re headed on your journey. That sort of advising from a professor in your field of interest can be so valuable and you can access it before you even apply.”

2. You Can Secure Financial Aid Early

The sooner you declare your intention to transfer to a new school, the sooner you can begin connecting with the right contacts at your new university who will help you get the best financial aid for which you qualify. Lujan noted that APU connects transfer students with financial aid specialists as soon as possible to help them understand their aid options.

“Our goal is to give transfer students confidence in knowing they have all the information they need to make a decision about joining the APU community,” Lujan said. “When you apply early, you receive the admission decision and then have plenty of time to get connected to the community and resources, including help reviewing your financial aid offers, guidance to understand exactly how your prior coursework will transfer over, getting academic or career counseling, and more.”

3. You Can Find a Sense of Belonging

Taking steps to transfer now presents a unique opportunity to bond with fellow students who all have a shared experience of finding their way into the college classroom following a period of upheaval. Chances are good that you’ll be enrolled with many others who are in similar academic (and personal) situations, or who offer unique perspectives from which you can learn and grow.

Keep Reading: How to Find the Right College Fit as a Transfer Student

“As colleges return to in-person learning, you are going to be starting back up with a lot of people who are in the same situation as you, and that can actually foster a sense of community and camaraderie,” Nakashimada noted. “At APU’s main campus or at a regional campus, you’re going to find a diverse group of people who are all excited to take another step forward on their educational journey, and being around like-minded students will help you get to your end goal of getting your degree.”

“If you are studying online, you are likewise in classes with other people who have similar circumstances and busy lives, and can help keep one another motivated,” she said.

A Range of Pathways Support Transfer Students at APU

APU offers a variety of options that make it easy to transfer your credits and make progress toward graduation. Here are some of the ways you can benefit:

Supporting Academic Success for Minority Students: APU Named Top 100 Degree Producer

Azusa Pacific University wants every student to experience academic success and fulfill their unique calling. In light of this goal and in recognition of the success of its students, APU was recently named a Top 100 Degree Producer by Diverse: Issues In Higher Education. This distinction is given to institutions that bestow the most degrees to minority students.

“This recognition speaks to the agency and the academic determination of APU’s diverse student body,” said Keith Hall, EdD APU’s vice president and chief diversity officer. “Many of our students begin the academic journey with incredible ambition and an elevated sense of commitment to serve and make a difference in the world.”

APU Ranks High in Science Degrees among Minorities

Cristian Aguilar, PhD, an assistant professor in the Department of Biology and Chemistry at APU, noted that minority groups in STEM fields are underrepresented, so the university is pleased to increase representation of STEM graduates. “Diverse perspectives from students contribute enormously to cutting-edge research and developments,” he explained. “It is imperative that the sciences be positioned to benefit from all voices as we work to address the challenging problems our society faces.”

It’s because of the drive and passion of talented students and faculty that APU ranked number 13 for nursing and number 96 for psychology among all undergraduate minority degree earners. APU minority graduate and doctoral students also made the list with rankings in nursing, rehabilitation and therapeutic professions, and biological and biomedical sciences.

Serving Minorities in Every Degree Program

Along with the university’s nursing program, APU ranked in the top 30 for graduate degrees in social sciences, business, and education among Asian Americans, and in the top 40 for English and business graduate degrees among African Americans.

The APU community is comprised of students who desire to excel and a supportive team of faculty and staff devoted to mentoring students for academic success from day one to graduation and beyond.

“In my five years directing APU’s Undergraduate Research Program, I have seen how critical faculty mentors can be in preparing students for a fulfilling future,” said Verónica Gutiérrez, MFA, PhD, who is also an associate professor of Latin American history and the director of the Bridge and Launch programs at APU. “Undergraduate faculty mentors introduce students to discipline-specific research methods, build confidence in their ability to produce scholarly work, assist them in submitting abstracts to conferences, and accompany them to present their research.”

The Future of APU’s Excellence

The Top 100 Degree Producer distinction points to APU’s ongoing commitment to equity and inclusion. “While we still have much work to do to help our students of minority status flourish at all levels and in all programs, these rankings indicate that we are on the right track,” said APU Provost Rukshan Fernando, PhD.

Hall said that APU has taken a strategic direction to be a Christ-centered community that’s committed to its designation as a Minority-Serving Institution (MSI), a recognition given by the Department of Education. The university continues to expand offerings to support student thriving, such as the new Summer Bridge program, a four-week program for incoming first-generation college students, made possible through a National Endowment for the Humanities-Hispanic Serving Institution (NEH-HSI) grant.

“This program offers students 5 units of academic credit, enrichment activities via field trips and guest speakers, and an opportunity to bond as a cohort,” said Gutiérrez. “Our goal is to provide our Bridge students with early exposure to the APU community, connect them with available resources, and introduce them to key faculty and administrators in order to ensure a smooth transition to university life.”

“It is important to acknowledge the investment of countless faculty, staff, and student leaders who are leveraging their influence, capacity, and expertise to support the holistic success of our diverse students. This also provides inspiration and informs our strategic efforts that support our designation as a Minority Serving Institution,” said Hall. “APU aspires to become a Thriving University of Choice where students from a variety of backgrounds come for a substantive, transformative, and holistic experience.”

He added that he wants the university to be a place where minorities are seen, known, and served well so that they can then graduate and make a difference for God, the nation, and the world.

The Difference Between Mathematics Degrees: Applied Math vs. Pure Math

You’re good with numbers and know that a degree in mathematics can lead to a number of careers. There are several mathematics degrees to choose from, so how do you decide which degree path is the best fit for you and your calling?

This deeper look into the BS in Applied Mathematics program at Azusa Pacific University can help you see how it differs from a BS or BA in Mathematics, and if it’s the right choice for you.

What Is an Applied Mathematics Degree?

Edwin Ding, PhD, an associate professor in the Department of Mathematics, Physics, and Statistics at APU, noted that the mathematics major focuses on pure mathematics. He explained that pure mathematics deals with the theoretical side of math and has a greater concentration on proofs, theorems, and abstract concepts.

“The applied math major, on the other hand, focuses more on applying analytical/computational math techniques to solve real-world problems in different fields,” said Ding. These fields can include actuarial science, biology, physics, computer science, and statistics. According to Ding, “Both majors start with the foundational courses, such as calculus sequence and ordinary differential equations, and go into different specializations later on.”

Which Math Degree Is Right for You?

Before deciding which mathematics degree path you want to pursue, consider your interests and future career goals. Ask yourself why you want a degree in math.

Your answer can help you determine which math degree choice is a better fit for you. Ding noted that switching from math to applied math—and vice versa—is easy, as there’s overlap during the first few semesters, providing flexibility to students.

Ultimately, Ding recommended an applied mathematics degree for students who want to enter careers in actuarial science, data science, or data analytics, as the coursework focuses more on computational skills. Upon graduation, students can use their degree to pursue a range of interesting careers or work toward an MS in Applied Statistics and Analytics at APU.

New Enhancements Strengthen Campus Safety

At Azusa Pacific University, promoting a safe learning and working community has always been a top priority. Now, as part of APU’s strategic plan, Renewal, the university is rolling out new campus safety enhancements.

“The Department of Campus Safety (DCS) is committed to providing a safe community for us all to learn, work, study, and grow in our faith,” said Paul Dennis, executive director of DCS.

Together with Richard Orr, Cleary coordinator for DCS, Dennis shared more details about some of the latest safety updates on the APU campus.

Special Services Officer Enhances Safety

In fall 2021, a special services officer will begin working alongside Department of Campus Safety officers. These officers are highly trained, have cleared comprehensive background checks, and completed 700-plus hours of professional training on topics including implicit bias, cultural diversity, ethics, de-escalation, mental health, and crisis communication. Adding a special services officer to the team also provides APU with an armed response in the event of a life-threatening emergency.

“The special services officer program was born as a result of professional assessments that were conducted over the past several years,” said Dennis. “Those assessments identified best practices associated with providing safety in a college environment. We are very excited about the enhanced level of community safety this program will provide.”

Community Advisory Committee Adds Accountability

The DCS team partners with the university community and local law enforcement, seeking their input and valuing varied perspectives. “We are committed to fostering a culture of campus safety that ensures that all of our community members are treated equally and with respect,” said Dennis.

To that end, APU has established a Community Advisory Committee, chaired by Xavier Whitaker, PhD, dean of students. “The Community Advisory Committee is a great addition to our university systems of accountability and is in place to assist Campus Safety in ensuring that we maintain a safe and fair environment for the university community,” Orr said.

Ongoing Collaboration Improves Emergency Response

DCS is working with the APU Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) to better serve the APU community. DCS professionals and the CIRT team are prepared to respond to emergencies such as earthquakes, wildfires, bomb threats, or crimes.

The university maintains an Emergency Response website to help educate the community about what to do in the event of an emergency, including instruction for emergency procedures, information about APU’s emergency notification system, and emergency phone numbers.

Azusa Pacific Students Conduct Innovative Research with Caltech University

From analyzing experimental data in the laboratory to discussing new theories with professors, Azusa Pacific University’s abundant student research opportunities as an R2 designated university continue to deeply enrich learning experiences. For Nathan Suiter ’22 and Nayree Panossian ’22, these opportunities led to their acceptance as fellows in the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF) program.

This summer, under the guidance of Sándor Volkán-Kacsó, PhD, associate physics professor, Suiter and Panossian will receive funding from Caltech to continue their research on F-ATP synthase, an essential enzyme in all known forms of life.

“This experience will grow both students, deepening their understanding of research and analytical skills, as well as preparing them for their future career paths,” said Volkán-Kacsó. “In addition, it strengthens the partnership between APU and Caltech as we look ahead to more research opportunities.”

While in the SURF program, both students will receive a $6,620 award for the 10-week period, attend weekly seminars by Caltech faculty and Jet Propulsion Laboratory scientists and engineers, and engage in an academic and professional development series. Their research will culminate in a written technical paper and oral presentation at a professional SURF seminar.

Suiter and Panossian will advance their research on the F-ATP synthase, also known as F-ATPase. This enzyme—found in bacteria, the chloroplast of green plants, and eukaryotic cells—uses motors to synthesize ATP, energy-carrying molecules. In short, these tiny motors, just a few nanometers across, are essential to life.

Scientists have found an unusual, sporadic behavior in the motors of a bacterial version of F-ATP synthase. Under the guidance of Volkán-Kacsó, Suiter has spent the last two years consulting large volumes of experimental data on these motors, developing analytical tools to peek behind the noise and attempt to explain the seemingly unpredictable behavior.

During the SURF program, Panossian will join their team as they continue their data analysis, develop theories, and conduct tests using APU’s new supercomputer to run large-scale simulations. Their research will help deepen scientists’ understanding of this essential enzyme, as well as provide progress on analytical tools and methods when consulting data.

“The APU team is performing research in the field of single-molecule biophysics. We use theoretical modeling and computer simulations to study the biological function of the F-ATPase, a rotary biological nanomotor,” said Volkán-Kacsó. “In recent years, these nano machines of life have been studied one motor at a time using single-molecule imaging methods. Scientist are basically making high-speed “movies” using advanced microscopies that try to follow the rotation of the tiny motors. Our group then applies models to extract the biological behavior of the motor.”

For Panossian, a chemistry and honors humanities double major, joining this research opportunity is an exciting next step toward her life goals.

“As a first-generation college student with parents who immigrated from Lebanon, this partnership with Caltech is a big move forward for me,” said Panossian. “It means the world to be able to conduct research with outstanding faculty, grow my connections, and continue my education journey.”

Keep Reading: Building a Career in Chemistry After Graduation

As Panossian works in the laboratory, discusses classic works with her fellow honors humanities’ classmates, and attends chemistry courses, her faith remains at the center of all that she does—she is grateful for APU’s Christian commitment and encouraging faith community. After graduating from APU, Panossian plans to pursue her doctorate in chemistry and continue research work in the laboratory. Eventually, she hopes to become a professor, using her experience to teach and inspire the next generation of scientists.

Suiter, a systems engineering and honors humanities double major, is excited to continue with the Caltech SURF program fellow for the second summer in a row.

“The research we’re conducting pushes me beyond my current level of studies, refining my adaptability and problem-solving skills,” said Suiter. “From sifting through complicated data, testing theories, and learning how to create a scientific presentation, APU and the SURF program have given me the opportunity to master the craft of research.”

When not researching, Suiter enjoys studying humanities in the Honors College, especially exploring the relationship between philosophy and the sciences. He is currently seeking God’s direction for his future, planning to either attend graduate school, become a system engineer, or pursue humanitarian work overseas.

According to Buck, this multidisciplinary training prepares students for careers where they may wear multiple hats. It also prepares those who plan on transitioning through various careers throughout their working years. With its built-in core courses rooted in vocational identity, cultural engagement, and leadership formation, interdisciplinary studies students have space to discern their strengths, skills, and passions as they find their next steps.

Next-Level Degrees That Span Disciplines

The communication management major is another interdisciplinary degree option that prepares students for the “next-level”, including promotion, management, and leadership. Courtney Wong Davis, PhD, director of the communication management program at Azusa Pacific University, noted that the courses are designed for vocational agility with hard and soft skills that transfer across disciplines and industries.

Students in the program are equipped with foundational theories and communication expertise, including conflict management, small group decision-making, and relational communication, that steward their education toward a variety of pathways. These include organizational leadership, entrepreneurship, marketing, human resources, and more.

“Our graduates regularly return to tell us how they have meaningfully contributed to their workplace and thrived as leaders in a variety of career trajectories,” said Davis.

Majors That Can Open Multiple Doors

Communication degrees aren’t the only disciplines that have a wide career net. Accounting and business degrees open the door to various careers in business and finance; marketing degrees can entail journalism, public relations, and fundraising roles; and studying mathematics and computer science can pave the way for analyst and engineering jobs within multiple industries.

With one study suggesting that working individuals will have 12 jobs over the course of their lifetimes, including approximately three to seven career changes, foundational education and meaningful practice can prepare students for the new working world.

“We are confident that we send out our graduates prepared to be difference makers across industries, careers, and jobs throughout their lifetimes,” Davis explained.
