Congratulations, You’re a College Graduate

You did it! You’re a college graduate! You finally have your diploma after many years of hard work and perseverance to make your educational and career dreams come true. Congratulations.

Becoming a college graduate is no small feat, and you should feel extremely proud of yourself for accomplishing this worthy milestone. Take a moment to celebrate your accomplishment!

Amy Tauati, an assistant professor and director of the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program at Azusa Pacific University, noted that it’s a significant achievement for every student, even though each individual’s journey to—and through—college is unique. “Graduation often marks a noteworthy shift from student to professional,” she said. “It is a time of completion that honors hard work and achievement as well as the formation of lifelong relationships and memories.”

While you probably don’t want to look at another textbook for a while, don’t forget to pause and soak in this moment. Remember who you were when you first started your college journey, and celebrate how far you’ve come (and grown) through the process. You set out to achieve a goal, and you did it. You overcame difficult days and trials. You didn’t give up on your dream.

For many students, especially first-generation students, earning a degree represents so much more than proof of their hard work. Social work major Marissa Lopez ’20 was the first in her family to receive a college diploma, and she explained how her education has set her up for continued growth. “Graduating from college means a lot to me,” she said. “It represents all of the skills, tools, and knowledge I am learning along the way to the career that I am passionate about.”

MA in Physical Education with Adapted Physical Education Added Authorization

It might surprise you to learn that children and adults with disabilities are at the greatest risk for obesity, per the CDC, and health care costs for this demographic surpass $44 billion each year in America. If you want to serve this demographic in need of change agents—and challenge yourself professionally in the process—APU’s MA in Physical Education with Adapted Physical Education Added Authorization can help you do just that.

More specifically, the 15-unit Adapted Physical Education Added Authorization specialization allows you to develop the pedagogical abilities needed to instruct all students. In addition, you can learn how to assess and develop gross motor skill goals, write an Individualized Education Program (IEP), and learn how to impact students with physical and intellectual disabilities.

“You get to know your students at a more personable level, help them achieve their goals, advocate for their rights, and make a difference in their physical education,” said Margarita Pulido, MA ’19, an adapted physical education teacher in the Anaheim Elementary School District. “It is a career that requires you to think critically and outside the box, be creative and patient, and most importantly, have fun.”

Potential careers you could pursue with this degree and experience include:

  • Camp/activities program directo
  • College professorr
  • Special education lobbyist/activist
  • Special education teacher

As you can see, a physical education degree can be tailored to meet your individual career goals. “APU offers multiple options and emphases related to physical education to help students find the program that aligns with their career path,” said Tanis. When deciding which path to pursue, Tanis recommends asking questions such as: Is the program long-standing and reputable? Is it accredited? Does the program have professors trained in physical education? And if you want to make a difference through physical education and sport, earning an advanced degree will set you up for career success from the start.

The Art and Science of Teaching Online for K-12 Educators

With remote learning more prevalent than ever before, instructional technologies have never been so important.

Teaching online effectively is more than just using technology to carry out lessons in a digital environment. It also means understanding how to use digital tools and where they fit best within your lessons or curriculum.

Here’s what you need to know about the art and science of teaching online, from online teaching and learning expert Kathleen Fletcher-Bacer, EdD, professor and director of Azusa Pacific University’s Online MA in Educational Technology

Tools to Support, Not Replace, Your Teaching

As new educational technologies are introduced, there’s a learning curve for both students and teachers. This includes figuring out how to adapt to remote learning and is especially true when using technology to interact with each other and trying to model face-to-face learning.

Fletcher-Bacer described one of the hurdles you and your students might face when introducing new technology in the classroom. “There is always a period of adjustment until a tool or technology becomes ‘transparent,’” she said.

Imagine driving a different car for the first time or trying to operate a new mobile device. Technology becomes transparent when you no longer have to think about how the interface works in order to achieve your goals.

“You will be amazed at the depth of learning you will be able to achieve as transparency begins to take place and you are no longer thinking only of the mechanics of the interface,” Fletcher-Bacer said. “This is true of any new technology that is first introduced.” Remember that the next time you are adopting a new online technology and keep working toward the point of transparency. Arriving there helps everyone focus on the task at hand—learning!

Employ Online Teaching Strategies

Just like in a physical classroom, it’s important to build trust and a sense of security in a digital classroom. Be present during (and outside of) class for student questions and concerns, showing that you’re there to support their learning.

Teaching online requires that you provide content in chunks to make lessons easier to grasp. With smaller elements of content to digest, students can review each chunk at a pace and manner that best suits their individual learning needs. Not only do virtual learning environments allow them to review the content as they’re able to, but they also provide students time to reflect.

Consider using frequent assessments to better track your students’ success, offer support, and adjust your delivery where needed. And when planning your content, pay attention to the activities and times of your synchronous sessions. Being together in the same space online is effective, but it isn’t the same as being together in the same classroom.

“Each student is in a different physical space with different support and circumstances,” Fletcher-Bacer said, so it’s important to design classes that adapt to and present the best material for online learning.

According to Fletcher-Bacer, well-designed virtual learning environments:

  • Offer individualized pathways to accommodate diversity of learning
  • Capitalize on built-in “rewind” or “replay” options—like watching a lesson more than once, pausing at a difficult concept, or having multiple attempts on certain assessments—transferring knowledge at the learner’s own pace
  • Provide equal opportunity for your learners to engage and have a voice
  • Offer flexibility to choose the time and place of learning
  • Curate the very best materials to present to your learners

Choosing Tools for the Online Classroom

With so many options available for your online classroom, you may wonder how to decide which tools and technologies will work best for you and your students.

One concept taught in APU’s educational technology program and learning and technology programs is the Triple E (Engagement, Enhancement, and Extension) Framework, which guides educators on how to evaluate new technology tools and when to use them. With this framework created by Liz Kolb, you can better determine how well different tools engage students, enhance their learning, and extend learning goals. Check out Kolb’s website and book, Learning First, Technology Second in Practice: New Strategies, Research and Tools for Student Success, for more ways to evaluate technology before you adopt it.

“Now more than ever, educators are asked to design curriculum and teach in digital environments that rely on technology for delivery,” Fletcher-Bacer said. APU’s MA in Educational Technology is well-suited for any educator who wants to thrive in and help shape environments where technology is used to empower learners.

If you’re an educator who wants to learn more about how to use educational technologies and remain adaptive, explore Azusa Pacific University’s educational technology program and discover strategies to boost learning outcomes in any digital environment.

Environmental Studies Minor: An Opportunity for Global Impact

The environmental crisis is urgent. Richard Slimbach, PhD, a professor in Azusa Pacific University’s Department of Sociology, TESOL, and Modern Languages, described in critical terms the worldwide problems facing students in environmental studies: Up to one million plant and animal species are at risk. Ozone smog threatens breathable air for billions of people.

Yet there is hope for change, and Slimbach believes these challenges give students with a passion for creation care a remarkable opportunity to be involved in important work. “Humanity and nature are both in deep trouble,” he said. “If the gospel of the kingdom of God includes ‘right relationship’ with humans and others, these developments present the Church with perhaps its greatest challenge as an instrument of planetary shalom.”

The Potential Impact of Environmental Studies

Cities occupy only 2 percent of the earth’s surface, but more than 75 percent of the world’s population will inhabit them by 2050. Without healthy cities, there won’t be a healthy planet. To get to this healthy state, cities such as Los Angeles, Buenos Aires, Delhi, and Beijing—which Slimbach described as “ground zero for all ecological and social crises facing the planet and its most vulnerable peoples”—will need to upgrade their policies and institutions.

“Over the next few decades, virtually every urban system will need to be redesigned: land use and transportation, architecture and building, energy provision and food production, water management and waste cycling, commerce and ecological restoration,” Slimbach said. “Fundamentally, we must transform the way we work, shelter, heat, cool, transport, feed, and play on this planet. What the Old Testament prophets understood as shalom continues to be the great work of this generation.”

How APU Can Prepare You to Help

APU is committed to educating the current and next generations to lead in this important work. The university’s 18-unit Environmental Studies Minor helps students make vocational and personal lifestyle decisions that allow them to make a positive impact on the environmental crisis facing the planet.

“For a number of years, there has been a recognized need to offer an interdisciplinary environmental studies program at APU,” said Louise Huang, PhD, acting dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the director of the Center for Research in Science. “In early 2018, several faculty members from various disciplines (biology, chemistry, global studies, business, theology) met to discuss this possibility. Eventually, four faculty members formed the Environmental Studies Minor team to write and submit the program proposal that was approved in spring 2020.”

Keep Reading: Environmental Impact on Campus: How You Can Help

According to the team of faculty who helped shape the minor, the program seeks to “summon students to what Pope Francis calls an ‘ecological conversion,’ whereby the effects of their encounter with Jesus Christ become evident in their relationship with the world around them.”

The minor prepares students for the “great work” that Slimbach described through practical experience, specialized knowledge and skills, and the building of a spiritual and ethical framework for interpreting and responding to environmental problems.

Pathways for the Environmental Studies Minor

Slimbach said careers where students can put environmental studies to work include nonprofit management, urban public policy, community development, cross-cultural ministry, environmental health, sustainability planning, urban education, international social work, public health, and human rights and protection.

This interdisciplinary minor combines well with a number of majors, including biology, biochemistry, economics, international business, philosophy, sociology, interdisciplinary studies, international relations, social science, English, journalism, public relations, communication management, Christian ministry, and public affairs.

Sarah Richart, PhD, a professor in APU’s Department of Biology and Chemistry, explained that environmental studies students typically complete one natural science course with a lab, one class from the humanities, one to two classes from economics, and one class from social science. In addition, students take an introductory environmental studies foundation class and a capstone/policy class that includes an internship. Several of these courses can be taken through APU’s Study Away program in places such as Lake Tahoe and South Africa.

Creating a Sustainable Financial Enterprise

A recent survey of 300 American college and university presidents found that long-term financial viability was a top-cited concern. The pandemic has shaken the financial foundations of many colleges, though the full extent of the impact remains difficult to assess. Prior to COVID-19, the national enrollment landscape and programmatic trends were already shifting, magnified even more so in California, where institutions serve highly diverse student populations and grapple with accessibility and affordability issues.

Emerging out of a time of fiscal challenge, Azusa Pacific University has been recently focused on analyzing the financial landscape before the global health crisis struck, employing strategies to work with intention amidst the disruption facing higher education. APU approaches the work moving forward with the confidence of its more than 120-year history and the new hope drawn from the Strategic Plan, Renewal: Strengthening Our Capacity for Cultivating Christ-Centered Scholars and Leaders, to embrace the challenge of anchoring our financial future, not as an end in itself, but as a means for fulfilling our vision to be the premier Christian university for our culture and times.

Grand Initiative 5: A Sustainable Financial Enterprise, is an ambitious strategic initiative that involves the entire APU community. APU’s economic engine is fueled by many parts, which function interdependently. Diverse undergraduate and graduate enrollment streams, a budget model with sound forecasting assumptions, growth in total asset base, careful management of investments, a growing endowment, and strong fundraising can all ensure that the health of APU’s economic engine is robust.

Philanthropy

Philanthropy plays a critical role in the financial sustainability of APU. The strategic plan outlines several important opportunities and initiatives, including growing the endowment by $48 million, advancing faculty scholarship and research, expanding and improving the physical campus, funding student scholarships to increase accessibility and affordability as well as to reward merit, and developing the spiritual growth and calling for all our students.

Growing the Endowment

APU is committed to growing the endowment through disciplined investment of annual budget surpluses and strategic philanthropy. APU anticipates that over the seven years of the strategic plan, an additional $25 million will be invested from budget surpluses. In addition, we will raise an additional $23 million to grow the endowment to more than $140 million. This goal includes three new endowed faculty chairs ($9 million total), $10 million to support student scholarship endowments, and a $4 million endowment to advance research. This growth-oriented endowment focus will create a sustainable revenue stream for APU for years to come.

Enhancing Facilities

APU is blessed with an exceptional Azusa campus that supports many of our existing programs. As our student demographic shifts and new programs are added, some of this space can be renovated and repurposed to serve these changing needs at a much lower cost than new construction. Similarly, as APU builds upon nationally recognized and innovative programs in areas such as the health sciences, the arts, and the Honors College, specialized space may necessitate the construction or repurposing of buildings. These needs and opportunities will be assessed through a collaborative process that integrates the academic vision with a campus master planning process.

Optimizing Financial Modeling

APU has worked diligently to create a sustainable financial model that allows leadership to respond to the changing landscape of higher education and the national economy. This includes an investment in technology, enhancing fiscal management policies and procedures, and creating transparency so staff, faculty, and students feel engaged in the financial stewardship of APU’s resources. Additionally, APU will continue to evaluate how to utilize and structure its debt to enhance the University’s Strategic Plan, while not overburdening the operational budget.

Amid the uncertainty facing higher education, APU’s bold Strategic Plan will build a sustainable financial model, enabling the University to respond nimbly to changes and opportunities over the next seven years. It provides for an investment in our campuses, technology, and most importantly, in our faculty, staff, and students. As we embark upon this important work, we anchor on this promise: “And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19, NKJV).

How to Use Canvas in the Remote Learning Environment

Navigating a remote learning environment for your online class or program offers a high level of access to your course information, but sometimes learning a new education platform can feel overwhelming. Between understanding how your online course management platform works, knowing what resources are available, and discovering how to best communicate with your professors and other students, there’s a lot to learn.

Fortunately, students at Azusa Pacific University have access to Canvas, one of the highest-rated online course management tools for college students. It’s simple to use and easy to customize, and it could even potentially boost your productivity and academic performance.

“Since Canvas is the virtual home for all APU courses, students should learn how to use it competently and confidently,” said Mike Truong, PhD, executive director and digital learning architect in the Office of Innovation Teaching and Technology at APU. “Doing so will improve their success in the remote learning environment.”

Why You Should Have a College Mentor (and How to Find One)

Want to know how to greatly increase your odds of success during college? Study hard? Of course. Get on-the-job training? Absolutely. But many students miss a surprisingly significant factor in their success—a college mentor.

This type of relationship can be a game-changer for your college experience, and for your career. In fact, a 2018 Gallup survey showed when college graduates have mentors, they’re twice as likely to be engaged at work.

While it’s true everyone needs a mentor, these connections are particularly important during specific periods of a person’s life. Mentors often provide the extra boost students need to thrive during college (and after). Here’s what to know about college mentors and some advice for finding one.

Why a College Mentor Is So Important

One reason students don’t make the effort to find a college mentor is because they don’t realize the importance. Truth be told, it may be one of the most important connections a student makes during college.

“A mentoring relationship can be a dynamic and insightful experience for college students who, in this stage of life, are laying the groundwork to identify and pursue their purpose,” said Marie Carasco, PhD, an assistant professor in Azusa Pacific University’s School of Business and Management.

Keep Reading: A Good College Mentor Can Make All the Difference

Mentors can help college students explore new opportunities. Faculty mentors often have access to experiences students aren’t aware of and can help point them in the right direction once they understand a student’s aptitude.

Additionally, Kelly Roth, MA, director of APU’s Office of Spiritual Life, believes college may be a particularly significant time for students to explore spiritual mentoring.

https://ufl.pb.unizin.org/exambook/chapter/sap-c_ts452_2021-dumps-pdf-why-pdf-questions-are-the-smarter-choice/

“As students are learning, as they’re applying themselves, it brings up life questions,” Roth said. “Having someone to walk alongside as they’re discovering new things about the world, about themselves can only enhance their spiritual life. We’re integrated beings. We’re not just mind, body, or spirit. We’re all of those things together.”

How to Find a College Mentor

It’s likely easier than you think to find an effective mentor during your college years. For students looking to find a faculty mentor, Carasco recommended requesting a phone call or online meeting with the potential mentor.

Before the meeting, have a clear idea of what you want to accomplish through the relationship. Then, ask whether that mentor would be able to provide support in those areas and has the availability to help.

It’s important, Carasco said, to find a mentor with whom you’re comfortable.

“This mentor doesn’t have to be in the student’s major,” Carasco said. “Although there is a great benefit to having someone as a mentor who is in the field that the student is studying, the relationship dynamic is more important than the association with the field.”

APU can help you find mentors during college through a number of programs. For example, the undergraduate discipleship mentoring program can provide you with an opportunity to get support from another Christian as you discuss faith and life, pray with one another, and grow together.

When you sign up for the program, the Spiritual Life will work to try and connect you with a mentor who shares your experiences and interests. These mentors will be faculty, staff, spouses of APU employees, seminary students, peers, and members of local churches. Students can even connect with these mentors remotely through Zoom or over the phone if they can’t get together in person.

For graduate and professional students, APU offers a peer mentoring program. To get connected, students can reach out to the university’s Office of Spiritual Life, which works to try and match students with similar interests, family life, and programs. Those interested in participating can contact the office to sign up as a mentor or mentee.

“As we create programs and services related to advocacy, access, and affinity to meet the unique needs of graduate and professional students, we believe that the peer mentoring program offers support and encouragement for students inside and outside the classroom,” said Matt Browning, EdD, director of graduate and professional student engagement.

Preparing for College After a Gap Year

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, 2021 is likely to see an extraordinary number of gap year students entering college for the first time—perhaps the largest ever. Additionally, some students may be returning to college after taking a gap year or gap semester. If you’re a student who is getting ready to transition into, or back into, college life after a gap year, here’s how to overcome common challenges and prepare for a successful year.

Gap Year Student Challenges

“With a break from academic work, students may be more focused and prepared to engage their undergraduate coursework after a gap year.” said Courtney Wong Davis, PhD, associate professor of communication management at Azusa Pacific University.

Contemplating college after a gap year can cause some common worries, including:

  • Fear of missing out on social activities.
  • Anxiety about falling behind academically.
  • Fear of not returning to school. (Don’t worry: the Gap Year Association reported that 90 percent of high school graduates who take gap years return to college within a year.)

Couple those with the limitations brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, such as:

  • Not being able to participate in traditional gap year activities, such as living abroad or gaining work experience.
  • Anxiety or fear of the unknown.
  • Lack of clarity regarding when you’ll arrive on campus.

The good news is that all of these challenges can be solved by wisely preparing yourself in advance for entering or returning to college.

Preparing for College after a Gap Year

As you prepare to transition back into a more consistent academic routine, making time for personal reflection will help you get ready for college, especially if you’re feeling overwhelmed.

Ask yourself questions like:

  • What things can I control about my college experience? What can’t I control?
  • How will I handle a new environment and the potential for unexpected changes?
  • What adjustments might I have to make in my schedule or activities?

Mentally preparing helps create space for when tough situations do arise. You’ll be more likely to respond to adversity with grace and poise. Give yourself some time to unwind, though—it’ll benefit both your gap year and future studies.

“Be wholly where you are,” said Davis. “When you take time away from academic life, you’re likely to more fully engage in your academic work when you return to it.”

Once You Start School

Arriving at college as a gap year student is a lot like swimming. You can hear what it’s like from other people—but until you actually jump in, you won’t fully know what to expect.

“Once students begin their academic journey after a gap year, it’s common for students to feel out of place,” said Davis. “Perhaps it’s imposter syndrome or feeling older than traditional undergraduate students. To make the transition easier, I’d encourage students to bring all of their life experience to the classroom, which provides an opportunity for growth for them and their classmates. Take advantage of the resources offered on campus. Help others understand where you are and where you are going, and how they can help you get there.”

As you start school, be prepared to make a few additional adjustments. Knowing which resources are available can help boost your confidence. At APU, students have access to several resources that can help them excel academically, socially, and personally:

  • Academic Success Center (plus their own individual academic advisor)
  • Campus Life
  • Spiritual Life
  • Counseling Center
  • Student Leadership opportunities

Take a moment to familiarize yourself with these resources and reach out if you think they could help you get back into the rhythm of college life and find the connections and support you need.

Going Forward

Eventually, you’ll settle into classes and your gap year will start to feel like a memory. Just don’t forget to use your gap year experience to your advantage.

Consider writing about what you achieved during your time off for a class paper, or put what you achieved on your résumé. Reconnect and network with the people you met along the way.

Basically, don’t shy away from who you’ve become during your time off! While there may be an adjustment initially, your gap year experience can help you become stronger, wiser, and more adaptable—all skills you need to succeed in college.

Creative Careers That Don’t Require Traditional Art Skills

Creative careers abound—and you don’t necessarily need traditional art or music skills to thrive in arts-related fields. In successful creative industries, a wide-ranging team of professionals with diverse experience and strengths work together to meet their goals and bring art, in its many forms, to the public.

Museums require researchers, teachers, and marketers to ensure their installations and programs can reach the most people. Musicians need managers, publicists, and accountants (plus many more) to successfully put their music into the world. And in the digital age, arts-related industries need a strong online presence. Professionals in web development are vital to bringing the artist’s perspective to life online.

Choosing a degree that prepares you to bring your strengths to creative industries can equip you for pursuing creative careers.

Art History

Working as an art historian is a perfect example of a career field within the arts that does not require individuals to be artists.

“Art history is a great fit for individuals with strong research, writing, and analytical skills who are curious about history, art, and culture,” said Angela S. George, PhD, an assistant professor and program director of the online Master of Arts in Modern and Contemporary Art History program at Azusa Pacific University.

George described art history students as readers, researchers, writers, and overall lovers of learning about history and culture. “These students have strong research, writing, and analytical skills, and they are motivated by curiosity to learn about and to make sense of artworks and artifacts,” she said.

Art history students also enjoy communicating their passion for art and visual culture to others through writing, teaching, lecturing, creating exhibitions, developing public programs, and more to carve out successful creative careers in art history.

Most art history jobs, whether in museums, art nonprofits, or educational institutions, require a master’s degree at minimum, and George recommended getting as much professional experience in your chosen field as possible. This includes internships or other paid experiences as well as making professional contacts.

“Professional contacts matter a great deal, and a graduate degree in art history coupled with previous experience is the best pathway to getting a professional job in the art world,” George advised.

Music Industry

A graduate degree in music industry offers a pathway to working in the music industry without necessarily having a musical background.

According to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), about two million people work in the music industry. Career paths for people who are looking to work in the music industry include being a recording engineer, publicist, accountant, lawyer, manager, agent, designer, music publisher, and other professionals who assist an artist in their career growth.

“Today’s artists have more control over their image and music than they did 10 years ago,” said Henry Alonzo, MBA, an assistant professor and program director of the Master of Arts in Music Industry program at APU. “A key factor of that is having a group of entrepreneurial-minded people who can help them.”

Successful artists have a team of professionals around them to help move their careers forward. This makes music entrepreneurship more relevant than ever as artists predominantly function as their own companies.

“To thrive in today’s music industry, you need a sustained passion for what you do by maintaining determination and grit and surrounding yourself with other driven professionals,” Alonzo said. “These are qualities that I see in every successful music entrepreneur.”

UX Design

NSF-Funded STEM Scholarship Launches First-Gen College Students into Promising Careers

Graduates with degrees in STEM fields—science, technology, engineering, and mathematics—are in high demand. But low-income, first-generation college students often face barriers as they work to complete their degrees in these areas.

“Over the past decade or so, witnessing students encounter challenges due to financial difficulties before or after graduation has been very troubling,” said Louise Ko Huang, PhD, assistant dean of Azusa Pacific University’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. “Such burdens often hinders and delays these graduates from pursuing God’s calling upon their lives.”

To address this challenge, the National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded APU a $650,000 S-STEM grant to bolster its student community. This STEM scholarship program will help recruit and retain high-achieving, low-income, first-generation students. Through the support of the program, these students will graduate from APU prepared to pursue their dreams of becoming computer scientists, engineers, mathematicians, physicists, and professionals in STEM fields.

“The scholarships will allow students to focus on their academic studies within the rigorous curriculum,” said James Hsi-Jen Yeh, PhD, principal investigator for the initiative and an associate professor in the Department of Engineering and Computer Science. In addition to much-needed financial assistance, the STEM scholarship supports students in other ways as well.

Huang added that simply alleviating the financial burden wouldn’t guarantee student success, so more needs to be done. “This has to be coupled with academic, professional, social, and family support to ensure our students—especially underrepresented or first-generation students who may have unique challenges—will thrive during their studies at APU,” she said.

The grant is the result of a three-year process led by APU College of Liberal Arts and Sciences faculty, including Huang and Yeh, as well as Bradley “Peanut” McCoy, PhD, co-investigator and chair and professor in the Department of Mathematics, Physics, and Statistics; Christopher B. Newman, PhD, educational researcher and associate professor in the Department of Higher Education; and Tedd Szeto, PhD, former STEM administrator and associate professor in the Department of Mathematics, Physics, and Statistics. Working together, they created the STEM scholarship program to support students in the following ways.

STEM Scholarships Will Support 56 Students

This NSF S-STEM grant funds 56 scholarships, ranging from $6,000 to $9,000 per APU student over the next five years. The scholarships will be awarded to students in six STEM-related majors within the Department of Engineering and Computer Science and the Department of Mathematics, Physics, and Statistics.

“Our strategic plan, Renewal, calls for us to be an institution of increased equity and inclusion,” said Rukshan Fernando, PhD, APU’s provost. “At the same time, the growing demand in the STEM fields necessitates the equipping of diverse undergraduates. The awarding of this grant cannot be more timely.”

Academic Support Will Help Ensure Student Success

In addition, the grant provides access to expert guidance from nationally recognized consultants, who can help provide faculty and peer mentoring, supplemental instruction, and tutoring. This support will aid in students’ academic success, build their confidence, and cultivate a sense of belonging, all of which can help them stay in school.

“With the additional support services including peer mentoring and research participation, we aim to attract and retain underrepresented students in the STEM fields and prepare highly skilled graduates for the future,” Yeh said.

Families Will Gain Encouraging Resources

Along with guidance and financial support, APU will provide students’ families with tools and encouragement—so they can play a role in helping their students succeed. Family workshops will take place each semester and families will receive materials and learn approaches to address concerns such as academic performance and vocational development.

Especially for first-generation students, this can be extremely valuable. “Family support could be key to degree completion for these underrepresented students,” Huang said.

Students Will Graduate Ready for Advanced Study and Careers

The benefits and offerings don’t stop there. Students will also have opportunities to participate in internships and summer research with faculty mentors, which can help prepare them for graduate-level study and for careers. Additionally, each student will have access to a STEM-focused success coach to give career guidance.

“Comprehensive training such as internships and shadowing opportunities can effectively integrate student and program learning outcomes with technical skills and post-graduation work readiness,” Huang noted.
