Robot-phobia could exacerbate hotel, restaurant labor shortage

VANCOUVER, Wash. — Using more robots to close labor gaps in the hospitality industry may backfire and cause more human workers to quit, according to a Washington State University study.

The study, involving more than 620 lodging and food service employees, found that “robot-phobia” — specifically the fear that robots and technology will take human jobs — increased workers’ job insecurity and stress, leading to greater intentions to leave their jobs. The impact was more pronounced with employees who had real experience working with robotic technology. It also affected managers in addition to frontline workers. The findings were published in the International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management.

“The turnover rate in the hospitality industry ranks among the highest across all non-farm sectors, so this is an issue that companies need to take seriously,” said lead author Bamboo Chen, a hospitality researcher in WSU’s Carson College of Business. “The findings seem to be consistent across sectors and across both frontline employees and managers. For everyone, regardless of their position or sector, robot-phobia has a real impact.”

Food service and lodging industries were hit particularly hard by the pandemic lockdowns, and many businesses are still struggling to find enough workers. For example, the accommodation workforce in April 2024 was still 9.2% below what it was in February 2020, according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The ongoing labor shortage has inspired some employers to turn to robotic technology to fill the gap.

While other studies have focused on customers’ comfort with robots, this study focuses on how the technology impacted hospitality workers. Chen and WSU colleague Ruying Cai surveyed 321 lodging and 308 food service employees from across the U.S., asking a range of questions about their jobs and attitudes toward robots. The survey defined “robots” broadly to include a range of robotic and automation technologies, such as human-like robot servers and automated robotic arms as well as self-service kiosks and tabletop devices.

Researchers found that having a higher degree of robot-phobia was connected to greater feelings of job insecurity and stress — which were then correlated with “turnover intention” or workers’ plans to leave their jobs.

Analyzing the survey data, the researchers found that having a higher degree of robot-phobia was connected to greater feelings of job insecurity and stress — which were then correlated with “turnover intention” or workers’ plans to leave their jobs. Those fears did not decrease with familiarity: employees who had more actual engagement with robotic technology in their daily jobs had higher fears that it would make human workers obsolete.

Perception also played a role. The employees who viewed robots as being more capable and efficient also ranked higher in turnover intention.

Robots and automation can be good ways to help augment service, Chen said, as they can handle tedious tasks humans typically do not like doing such as washing dishes or handling loads of hotel laundry. But the danger comes if the robotic additions cause more human workers to quit. The authors point out this can create a “negative feedback loop” that can make the hospitality labor shortage worse.

Chen recommended that employers communicate not only the benefits but the limitations of the technology — and place a particular emphasis on the role human workers play.

“When you’re introducing a new technology, make sure not to focus just on how good or efficient it will be. Instead, focus on how people and the technology can work together,” he said.

Rising costs, AI worry American travelers

Washington State University’s Carson College of Business released a new report with insights into Americans’ upcoming travel plans, including motivations, budgeting habits, and considerations surrounding sustainability and artificial intelligence.

One of the report’s top findings reveals nearly all members of Gen Z in the survey (97%) expect current or potential rising costs to have “a great deal” or “a moderate influence” on their choice of accommodation (86%), travel destination (83%), trip length (80%), or activities they book or plan (77%).

“The WSU School of Hospitality Business Management is well-known for its leadership in hospitality, travel and tourism research,” said Debbie Compeau, Carson College interim dean. “This report provides a fresh understanding of current traveler trends, equipping industry professionals with the knowledge they need to make informed, actionable decisions.”

The report, conducted in collaboration with KRC Research, examines broad travel plans and motivators, travel finance considerations, sustainability, and wellness as aspects of travel decisions as well as the impact of AI on travel. The report surveyed 1,020 American adults aged 18 years or older.

Key findings include:

Americans’ travel plansMore than three in four of the respondents (76%) say they will travel in the next 12 months. Of those who plan to travel, 95% will travel domestically, and 37% will travel to at least one international destination. Among all these likely travelers, 78% plan on traveling for vacation, 68% will travel to visit family or friends, and 23% will travel for work or business.

  • Out of 16 possible motivators for choosing destinations and plans when traveling, survey respondents most often said experiencing beautiful surroundings (37%) and focusing on relaxation or well-being (33%) are among their top-three factors.
  • Other common top three travel motivators include having family-friendly experiences (30%), enjoying different cuisines (22%), having an adventure (21%), and participating in leisure or recreational activities (17%).
  • Eighty percent of the respondents agree that traveling is an important way to improve their overall well-being.

Travel planning and budgeting: Almost all of the survey respondents (93%) expect to spend at least some time budgeting, searching for deals, and comparing costs the next time they travel.

  • Nearly all (96%) expect current or potential rising costs—either at home or at their travel destination—will have at least minor influence on their travel planning.
  • More than four in 10 say current or potential rising costs will likely have “a great deal of influence” on their choice of travel destination (47%) or their choice of accommodation (43%) when they travel. Just under four in 10 say the same about planned trip length (39%) and activities booked and planned (37%).
  • Should inflation cause Americans to scale back their travel plans, the survey respondents report shopping costs (63%), food and drink costs (52%), and activity costs (57%) would be among the most common ways to reduce spending.

Considerations when travelingsustainability and other values: When next given the choice to travel, 75% of the study’s respondents say sustainability will be at least a top, important, or secondary priority in planning where to go, where to stay and dine, what to do, or how to get around.

  • Just one in four (25%) say sustainability is not a priority and has little or no influence on their plans for travel.
  • Nearly three in four (74%) say they feel a responsibility to plan and act sustainably when they travel.
  • For some, sustainable travel may entail “getting off the grid”—44% of respondents say it’s important to visit or stay in rustic locations free of technological or electronic distractions.
  • Nearly three in four (73%) agree “it’s important for me to find ways to do good for others in the places I travel,” with one in four (25%) strongly agreeing. In fact, 8% of the survey participants say “doing good for others” is a top-three motivation that influences their choice of travel destination and activity, out of 16 options.

Travel and AI: More than half (51%) of respondents believe they’ve already used tools or services with artificial intelligence  to help with travel, and a majority think it could help them with aspects of their trip.

Business students use AI tools in class to prepare for today’s workforce

To resist using artificial intelligence tools in the classroom is like fighting against a tidal wave — there’s no way to stop it and no way to catch it, according to marketing Professor Andrew Perkins.

While he has colleagues at other universities who make AI tools illegal or use outdated technology to catch students using ChatGPT, Perkins is one of several Carson College of Business faculty to proactively integrate new technologies into the classroom under the premise they will make students more competitive in the workforce.

His senior capstone class “Marketing Management” uses large language models like ChatGPT to enhance students’ academic performance and ability to communicate effectively in a digital world.

“These tools level the playing field for everybody and have a huge societal component. The combination of an internet connection and access to AI, even a free version, allows anyone to leverage their skill set up to 100 times over what they would be able to do by themselves,” Perkins said. “That allows anybody in the world to educate themselves and start a business, get hired, or build skills.”

Perkins says AI allows him to be more creative as a teacher and more efficient with time, freeing him up to work on engagement, discussion, teamwork, and assessment instead of spending hours writing a case study or classroom activity.

AI has changed a lot about the way Perkins teaches, but not everything.

No matter the topic or grade level, Perkins strives to put students at ease while challenging them to use AI tools. Relaxing jazz music plays in the background during class, and he often uses games to reinforce learning.

“The real-life economy projects we’ve worked on over the semester are my favorite and have been a super fun experience. You can tell Professor Perkins cares about us a lot and wants us to succeed after we graduate,” said Lucas Smith. “Using ChatGPT really expanded my outlook on what the future workforce is going to look like and how our future employers will expect us to use AI models.”

Jim Harbour appointed director of the WSU School of Hospitality Business Management

Jim Harbour, a career-track associate professor in the Carson College of Business, has been appointed director of the School of Hospitality Business Management. He will officially assume director duties on Aug. 16.

“It’s an incredible honor to be the next director of the School of Hospitality Business Management,” Harbour said. “I want to be a change agent while honoring all those who came before me who worked so hard to create our international reputation. It’s my goal to keep that reputation and work with students, faculty, staff, alumni, industry, administrators, and anyone else that wants to engage with us to help students thrive.”

Harbour (’99) earned his bachelor’s degree in hotel and restaurant administration from WSU and an MBA from Gonzaga University. He has been a faculty member in the SHBM since 2006 and has taught nearly every course in the hospitality program. One of his passions is leading students on study abroad experiences. He co-owns and operates South Fork and Round Top Public House restaurants and Fork in the Road Catering with business partner Wade Dissmore (’97). Harbour and his wife, Jennifer, own Porch Light Pizza and Sweet Mutiny.

The School of Hospitality Business Management was established in 1932 and is renowned for its faculty expertise, globally recognized research, industry collaboration, and hands-on experience, making it a top choice for students seeking a comprehensive education in an accredited school of business.

“Jim’s intimate knowledge of our curriculum and wealth of industry experience make him an excellent choice to lead our hospitality programs,” said Debbie Compeau, interim dean.

Early exposure to industry influences career aspirations

Harbour grew up in Auburn, Washington, and said his interest in hospitality began in 7th grade when his parents briefly invested in a restaurant. He worked there and fell in love with all aspects of the business. His family later moved to Pullman, where Harbour attended high school. At 16, he worked in a local pizza place, which confirmed the direction of his career.

“I enjoyed the intensity of the work and the industry; it suited who I am as a person,” Harbour said. “Making crew members’ and guests’ days better in the restaurant kept me coming back for more.”

Today, he infuses his classroom with the expertise he’s gained in the industry over the last 30-plus years.

“I use real-time data in the classroom so students see how the numbers work from an operating restaurant,” Harbour said. “I discuss successes and failures that we have experienced in the restaurants, which adds relevancy.”

Carson College career readiness program receives recognition

The Carson College of Business Career Amplifier program and Michelle Chapman received an honorable mention from the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) for their 2024 Career Readiness Award.

According to NACE, the honor is awarded to an individual or office for innovative best practices that support and promote the incorporation of career readiness competencies to prepare students and alumni for careers or internships.

The Career Amplifier is a required cocurricular program for Carson College majors managed by Michelle Chapman in the Carson Center for Student Success. Chapman, assistant director for student success and career development at the center, said the college competed with more than 60 institutions from across the country, including many major universities, to earn the prestigious achievement.

“The National Association of Colleges and Employers is the guiding force for career development in the nation,” Chapman said. “One of the things they do is seek out colleges or universities that are doing incredible work helping students gain career competencies.”

Chapman said the Amplifier program is developed from a subset of NACE competencies including communication, leadership, professionalism, and career and self-development. Students progress through the program by attending university events and other engagement opportunities and earn their business degrees on a concurrent schedule.

“We have workshops, programs, events, and activities that are a part of the program, and then the student gets to choose what part they want to do,” Chapman said.

Chapman said the program ensures students will leave WSU with the career readiness competencies and soft skills needed to achieve their goals and excel in their careers.

“If we arm our students with that information before they leave us, when they’re in the workforce, they make strides and create a brand for the quality of Carson graduates,” she said. “Not only are our students getting hired but they’re so outstanding, employers start to seek them out.”

NACE is a national association of 17,000 college services professionals, including hundreds of colleges and universities.

Using the term ‘artificial intelligence’ in product descriptions reduces purchase intentions

PULLMAN, Wash. – Companies may unintentionally hurt their sales by including the words “artificial intelligence” when describing their offerings that use the technology, according to a study led by Washington State University researchers.

In the study, published in the Journal of Hospitality Marketing & Management, researchers conducted experimental surveys with more than 1,000 adults in the U.S. to evaluate the relationship between AI disclosure and consumer behavior.

The findings consistently showed products described as using artificial intelligence were less popular, according to Mesut Cicek, clinical assistant professor of marketing and lead author of the study.

“When AI is mentioned, it tends to lower emotional trust, which in turn decreases purchase intentions,” he said. “We found emotional trust plays a critical role in how consumers perceive AI-powered products.”

In the experiments, the researchers included questions and descriptions across diverse product and service categories. For example, in one experiment, participants were presented with identical descriptions of smart televisions, the only difference being the term “artificial intelligence” was included for one group and omitted for the other. The group that saw AI included in the product description indicated they were less likely to purchase the television.

Researchers also discovered that negative response to AI disclosure was even stronger for “high-risk” products and services, those which people commonly feel more uncertain or anxious about buying, such as expensive electronics, medical devices or financial services. Because failure carries more potential risk, which may include monetary loss or danger to physical safety, mentioning AI for these types of descriptions may make consumers more wary and less likely to purchase, according to Cicek.

“We tested the effect across eight different product and service categories, and the results were all the same: it’s a disadvantage to include those kinds of terms in the product descriptions,” Cicek said.

Cicek said the findings provide valuable insights for companies.

“Marketers should carefully consider how they present AI in their product descriptions or develop strategies to increase emotional trust. Emphasizing AI may not always be beneficial, particularly for high-risk products. Focus on describing the features or benefits and avoid the AI buzzwords,” he said. In addition to Cicek, the study included co-authors Dogan Gursoy, professor of hospitality at WSU, and Lu Lu, associate professor at Temple University’s Fox School of Business and Management.

Entrepreneurship course series prepares future business leaders

A series of three entrepreneurship classes offered at Washington State University Tri-Cities is pairing students with industry professionals to develop and launch new ventures in clean energy.

Paul Carlisle, an adjunct professor with the Carson College of Business who runs the program, said the classes are meant to be taken in succession. Students team up with a researcher who holds a freshly patented technology, often from nearby Pacific Northwest National Laboratories (PNNL), help create a business plan, and secure venture financing to create a viable business.

“The goal is that regardless of what the technology is, if the student was to take all three classes, they would have the preparation and access to launch a new business,” Carlisle said.

Classes integrate business with new ideas

The three classes begin with new venture planning, followed by launching new ventures, and concluding with entrepreneurial management. Carlisle, who has been teaching entrepreneurial management since 2011, said these classes have been offered at WSU for many years, but were adapted at Tri-Cities to include participation within industry. They were offered as a series for the first time in the fall of 2023.

The first few weeks of each class are largely instructional, ensuring students are familiar with the process and certain business fundamentals. Then students meet with researchers and participate in an “innovation lab” sharing and applying the business skills they honed in those first weeks.

“The innovation lab is a noncredit workshop we run where PNNL researchers and community members learn about commercialization,” Carlisle said. “Then we create this entrepreneurship course load in which those students within those three classes can participate in these workshops as part of their learning venture.”

The final weeks are spent developing the business further and putting together a final plan for how the business will be commercialized. While similar in format, Carlisle said the classes build on one another as they progress — though he said there’s plenty of benefit from taking a single class of the series.

Series offers practical skills for all

As WSU Tri-Cities does not offer an entrepreneurship degree, Carlisle said the class series is part of an “innovation track” meant to complement a business degree — though the classes are open to all majors.

“The reason we’re calling it ‘innovation’ is the goal here is not necessarily that everyone who takes this will start a business or be involved in a startup,” Carlisle said. “They very much could be an intrapreneur trying to launch a new product within an existing business.”

Participating students say the knowledge and expertise gained in these classes are valuable to all manner of professions. While he plans to become a middle school history teacher, Brandon Gale said the opportunity to work directly with a subject matter expert was too good to pass up. However, Gale said he found entrepreneurship training offers benefits that go beyond the world of business.

Pac‑12 welcomes new members

This morning the Pac‑12 Conference announced the addition of four new members beginning with the 2026–27 academic year. The four universities, Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, and San Diego State, are like-minded institutions that expand upon the foundation of a rebuilt Pac‑12 Conference.

Today’s news is a great start to stabilizing the future of the Pac‑12 Conference and Washington State University. For more than a year, the partnership between Washington State, Oregon State, and the Conference has been united in forging a future that continues the tremendous legacy of the Pac‑12 Conference. We appreciate all the efforts and dedication from Commissioner Teresa Gould and her team to ensure the future success of the Pac‑12.

The four newest members to the conference bring a demonstrated commitment to competing at the highest levels. With this initial step toward financial and membership stability in place, the Pac‑12 will continue to evaluate additional membership expansion opportunities.

In my final year as President of Washington State University, I had four focus areas I wanted to address before my tenure concluded. One of those was securing a long-term home for Cougar Athletics. For more than a century, Washington State University has competed for conference and national titles as a member of the Pac‑12. This recent announcement ensures that it will continue for WSU’s student-athletes.

We appreciate the continued support of Cougars everywhere as we build upon the tremendous history of Washington State University.

Real-time debate reactions show Democrats more ‘fired up’ than Republicans

The “enthusiasm gap” showed up in a test of involuntary physiological responses among viewers of last Tuesday’s presidential debate.

Preliminary results of a real-time test of voters showed that involuntary responses of Democrat participants to the presidential debate were stronger than those of Republicans. Those findings were supported by a post-debate survey in which Democrat participants indicated they were more likely to donate to support Kamala Harris than the Republicans to Donald Trump.

A research team led by Paul Bolls and Yen-I Lee from Washington State University’s Murrow College of Communication conducted media psychophysiology tests on a sample of 31 voters—18 Democrats and 13 Republicans—while they watched the debate from a monitored location on the WSU Pullman campus. They all wore a ring-like sensor, developed by Biopac Systems, which detects sweat gland activity, an involuntary nervous system reaction.

“The sympathetic arousal data indicates that at this raw, less conscious, visceral level, Democrats appear to be perceiving Trump as a threat,” said Bolls. “That’s not so much the case in terms of Republicans’ perception of Harris.”

The sensors provide a physiological indicator of activation, or “how fired up” a person becomes, Bolls explained. A high level of physiological response on the ring sensor is a rating that exceeds 1.0, and Democrats reached that level in relation to both Trump and Harris. The Republicans response meanwhile only reached 0.83 for their candidate and for Harris at 0.59.  While the sensors cannot reveal if the response is positive or negative, the participants questionnaire answers showed that they were likely activated positively for their candidate and negatively for the opposing candidate.

The surveys also revealed a hint of change post-debate. Republican attitudes toward the candidates were slightly more mixed than Democrats. The Harris supporters felt only more positively about their candidate afterwards. They also felt more strongly that she had won the debate. Republicans still felt Trump had won but were less strong in that belief.

It’s no surprise that the debate didn’t change any minds, Bolls said. Research has shown that they rarely do. What Bolls and Lee are more interested in investigating is how psychological processes like emotional regulation influence people’s politics.  “What’s going on at this deeper cognitive and emotional level, I think has more implications for democracy and how we talk with each other than debates,” he said. “If we can gain some valid scientific insight into emotional responses to a variety of political content and interactions, there may be a way to figure out how to practically inform how the media covers and presents politics as well as how we respond to it.”

Fear of appearing prejudiced can inhibit accurate performance feedback to women

PULLMAN, Wash. — Evaluators who want to avoid appearing prejudiced may overcorrect and give women inflated performance feedback, new research indicates, which is a practice that could ultimately hinder their ability to improve and advance.

A Washington State University-led research team investigated the connection between overly positive performance reviews and “protective paternalism,” the belief that women need to be handled carefully and shielded from harm.

While it may be well-intentioned, evaluating women this way could hold them back by causing them to miss growth opportunities that might otherwise advance their careers, said Leah Sheppard, lead author of the research published in the Journal of Business and Psychology.

“If women don’t get honest feedback, they’re only going to fall further behind. That’s the clear, negative outcome,” said Sheppard, a WSU Carson College of Business researcher. “It’s never going to be the right thing, or even the kind thing to do, ultimately, to spare somebody from the obvious areas in which they need to improve.”

Previous research has found that reviewers tend to tell “gendered white lies” and inflate the feedback they give to women. To better understand this tendency, Sheppard and colleagues at Colorado State University first looked to see if the inflation was apparent in examples of real-world reviews.

Since internal workplace evaluations are usually confidential and difficult to access, the researchers used publicly available music reviews of men and women solo artists. Analyzing three years of reviews from Rolling Stone magazine, they found that the word count devoted to positive feedback was higher for reviews of women than men on albums given the same star rating.

In a second two-part study, they delved into when and why this occurs with a group of 486 participants, divided roughly in half by gender. First, participants took a survey designed to measure their motivation to appear nonprejudiced toward women. This included statements assessing internal motivation, such as “Being nonprejudiced toward women is part of my self-concept,” and external motivation: “Because of today’s politically correct standards, I try to appear nonprejudiced towards women.”

Next, participants viewed a performance description of a hypothetical, gender-neutral employee and then picked from a list of positive and negative statements as representing the most honest, accurate feedback for the employee.

About a week later, the participants viewed the same performance description, but this time, the employee had a male or female name. Participants were asked how they would feel when delivering feedback, including whether they felt they should protect and shield the employee from harm. Finally, participants were asked to select from the same feedback statements used in the ungendered scenario.

The researchers found that when participants expressed a stronger external motivation to avoid appearing prejudiced, they reported feeling a greater desire to protect the woman employee from harm. This “protective paternalism,” in turn, predicted delivering feedback that was more positive than they had given in the ungendered scenario. This was true whether the participants themselves were women or men.

The findings suggest that if not implemented well, some diversity efforts could backfire, the researchers noted.

If a diversity, equity and inclusion program is creating an atmosphere where people are afraid to criticize the job performance of certain groups of people, that could ultimately hurt the careers of the people those efforts are most intended to help, said Sheppard.

“We are starting to see more conversations around what we’re doing with DEI programs. Are we actually making a better space for people that have been historically marginalized? If we’re not doing that, and we’re actually just instilling fear in people, we’ve got to kind of go back to the drawing board and figure it out,” she said.
