How to Find the Right College Fit as a Transfer Student

When you decide to transfer colleges, you have the opportunity to find a school that helps you work toward your goals. Many students transfer between schools because they have a clear vision of what they want to accomplish, and they are ready for the next step in pursuing their bachelor’s degree.

Whether you’re coming from a community college or simply looking for a different college experience, doing your due diligence will help you find the right college fit to meet your needs! Here are a few steps to take when choosing a new school.

Define Your Ideal College Experience

As a transfer student, there are many aspects to consider when deciding where to transfer. You might consider the size of the school, its location, educational opportunities, overall environment, and more.

To help decide on a school’s fit, ask questions about the school’s graduation rate, the availability of transfer scholarships, the size of the student population and class sizes, and if articulation agreements or transfer plans are offered to make transferring easier. You may want to ask if the school offers service-learning or experiential learning that provides hands-on experiences to support your goals. Compare your findings with the experience at your current school and other schools you’re considering.

Get to Know the Campus

Finding a campus where you can envision yourself growing and learning can play a major role in your college experience. Scheduling a campus visit or attending admissions events—either in person or online—can help you get a better feel for how much you’ll feel welcome, valued, and engaged as a transfer student. Many schools also offer transfer events to help you learn about academics, financial aid, and what you can expect from student life on campus.

Peter Lujan, assistant director in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at APU, highlights these events as a way to get to know the school. “The admissions office also hosts a variety of on-campus and virtual events, including the Transfer to APU event where students can learn more about what transferring to APU can look like for them,” he said.

Make a Plan to Successfully Transfer Colleges

Finally, you’ll want to map out a timeline for your transfer. Admissions representatives and university resources like transfer plans can be helpful during the process. You can work with school admissions representatives to create a transfer plan, find out about financial aid, and get help with the next steps in your admissions process.

Counselors can also work with you and your family to discuss program options, opportunities, and outcomes. As a reminder to students interested in joining the APU community, Lujan noted that help is always just a click or phone call away. “The transfer counseling team in the undergraduate admissions office is excited to help prospective students figure out if APU is the right fit for them,” he said.

Computer Science vs. Computer Information Systems: Which Major Is Right for You?

You like technology and you can see yourself building a career in the field. As you think about choosing a college major, you see two possible options that look quite similar and you want to compare: computer science vs. computer information systems.

The two degree programs offer valuable insight into the technology that individuals use every day, in almost every facet of their lives. But which one is best suited to your interests and abilities?

While the majors may look similar, they offer unique educational foundations depending on what field you want to pursue. Azusa Pacific University designed the programs to equip students with different skill sets for their specific calling. If you’re considering which path is right for you, here’s what you need to know:

4 Questions to Ask About Computer Science vs. Computer Information Systems

Since it can be such a tough call to decide between these two majors, it’s helpful to think through some questions as you plan your academic career. These four are a great place to start:

  1. Are you interested in the scientific and mathematical aspects of computer science? A computer science degree focuses more on the theory and mathematics behind the technology, whereas a computer information systems degree centers on some of the practical applications of technology, such as building apps, providing security, and designing games.
  2. Would you like to pursue a graduate degree in computer science? A master’s in computer science can provide a terrific opportunity to move up into management positions or become a thought leader in the field. If you’re already thinking about graduate school, computer science would give you the best theoretical background.
  3. Would you like to work independently or as a freelancer? Because a computer information systems degree focuses on the business applications of technology, you’ll find a variety of opportunities to serve as a technology consultant for businesses. For people with an interest in entrepreneurship or who simply want more control over their time, this may be the best direction to take.
  4. Are you an abstract thinker? Computer science is best suited for people who enjoy abstract thinking, particularly related to mathematics. Concrete thinkers tend to enjoy putting theory into practice. A computer information systems program does that by focusing on using technology to solve business problems.

George Thomas, PhD, professor and chair of the Department of Engineering and Computer Science at APU, sums up the decision with his advice for students exploring both majors.

“I would ask students what their long-term aspirations are, whether they want to be a creator of new and advanced software systems or work to support and maintain existing systems,” Thomas said. “I would ask about math skills and affinity, as the computer science major demands more math than computer information systems.”

Computer Science at APU

APU has designed the BS in Computer Science to prepare students to create systems that analyze, transform, and describe information. The coursework includes a strong focus on calculus, discrete mathematics, computing fundamentals, operating systems, database management, and data structures.

“The ideal computer science major would be good in abstract thinking, usually demonstrated by strong math skills,” said Thomas. “Usually the student will have aspirations to work in top-notch software companies and often have a clear inclination to higher degrees in computer science.”

Computer Information Systems at APU

APU’s BS in Computer Information Systems prepares students to become professionals with an expert understanding of the intricacies of cutting-edge technology, including its effects on business and the means for keeping vital information safe. The coursework includes classes that help students get a firm grasp on object-oriented and structured programming, modern operating systems, and database management and development.

Computer information systems majors benefit from many opportunities to work together in groups and create projects that provide firsthand experience to strengthen their résumés.

Who might be interested in exploring a computer information systems degree from APU? “Someone who enjoys coding and is interested in maintaining and managing software systems,” Thomas said. “Usually the student would want to work in business applications of computer software.”

How Studying Entrepreneurship Can Prepare You to Run Your Own Business

Entrepreneurship has become a thriving field in recent years, particularly among those under the age of 25. In fact, according to a Nielsen study cited by Forbes, 54 percent of Gen Z respondents (those born between 1997 and 2012) were interested in starting their own businesses.

Successful entrepreneurship is far from guaranteed. Fundera reported that only about half of new businesses succeed, and 20 percent fizzle out before their first birthdays. However, studying entrepreneurship in a university environment can give students a much-needed opportunity to thrive as they launch their careers.

If you’re one of the individuals hoping to one day start your own business, you’ll need more than a good idea and the drive to succeed to become successful.

Skills You Need to Thrive as an Entrepreneur

No one is born an entrepreneur. Certainly, some people are born with a specific mix of gifts and talents that lend themselves to effectively start and grow a business. But having the right gifts won’t help if you don’t have the skills you need to thrive! It’s important to focus on rounding out your strengths.

Here are a few skills you’ll need to develop to be a successful entrepreneur:

  • Strategy development. Whenever you start a business, you must be able to create a road map for your company’s future. No one else will do it for you. Your plan should include everything from your business concept, finances, timeline, etc.—all items you’ll need to get funding and develop a market for your goods and services.
  • Dedication. You’ll likely encounter all kinds of roadblocks when you try to start a company. Entrepreneurs who can’t plow through (or maneuver around) those obstacles likely won’t succeed. “Excitement and vision are crucial, but the successful entrepreneur understands that the work gets done through consistent perseverance,” said Todd Pheifer, Ed.D., an assistant professor in Azusa Pacific University’s School of Business and Management.
  • Adaptability. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the significance of adaptability for any business owner, but the necessity is hardly just a product of 2020. New businesses must navigate a variety of market changes all the time. Pheifer also noted that adaptability is about both attitude and the ability to “recognize that so-called standard business practices are always in flux.”

The good news is that all three of these skills—and others important to entrepreneurs—can be learned. Studying entrepreneurship in college can help students get prospective new businesses off the ground and thriving. But the right educational experience isn’t just about knowledge acquisition.

“Change is constant, and while this can require us to constantly update our sense of normalcy, transformative development can be incredibly exciting,” Pheifer said. “Education is partially about knowledge acquisition and skill-building, but it is also about developing the ability to research, ask questions, and anticipate new trends. School does not end when the student walks across the stage at graduation. Learning is a lifelong process.”

How APU Develops Successful Entrepreneurs

With a focus specifically on entrepreneurship, APU can give students a valuable head start when preparing for a career as an entrepreneur.

“APU’s entrepreneurship major provides a foundation for students interested in starting their own businesses,” said Roxanne Helm-Stevens, DBA, interim dean and professor in APU’s School of Business and Management.

Helm-Stevens described the school’s entrepreneurship program as a hands-on opportunity to develop (and hone) the necessary skills for starting a business. Through their education, students create a business plan as they’re learning to fund, build, promote, and manage their businesses. Then, they get the opportunity to pitch their businesses in a “Shark Tank” type of presentation.

“In addition to learning how to start and build a business, APU’s entrepreneurship major also helps students learn to apply their creativity and energy to a business idea, and equips students in negotiation strategies,” Helm-Stevens said.

Students can even use their minor concentrations—particularly those in marketing, accounting, or finance—to level up their entrepreneurship skills. For example, a student’s marketing minor can help them learn about e-commerce and digital marketing skills they’ll need to thrive. For finance minors, Helms-Stevens said the course of study provides the necessary foundation for fundraising. And the accounting minor can effectively train students in tracking both expenses and revenue.

Ultimately, entrepreneurship is about solving problems as efficiently and creatively as possible while working toward an individual goal.

6 College Success Strategies for First-Generation Students

Making the decision to continue your education is the first step to furthering your academic and professional potential. To mark your path for college success, you might be wondering where to begin and how to make the most of your time in school. As the first in your family to attend college, you may have a lot of questions about campus life and where to turn for help. We get it!

For the best experience possible, check out these six strategies to help you succeed—from the application process all the way through your first year.

1. Visit Campuses When Choosing Where to Apply

Online resources are a great starting point for gathering information when applying to colleges. But once you’ve narrowed down your top choices, consider visiting their campuses to get a feel for each environment. Once on campus, you can interact with current students, explore the facilities, and even set up meetings with counselors and department heads to learn more from those who know the college best. Visiting the campus is an opportunity to see what the college is really like in person, and you may discover that it feels so much like home that you can’t picture yourself anywhere else. If visiting campus in person isn’t an option, see if the college you’re interested in has an online campus tour or virtual events to help you connect and ask questions.

Contact the admissions team when you make your appointment to visit campus and take advantage of that time to chat with an admissions representative. Or chat with your admissions representative online. A representative can help address any questions your family might not be able to answer. They can even point out tips and tricks for applying that are especially helpful for first-generation students.

3. Explore a Variety of Course Options

Whether you’ve always known what you wanted to study or you’re still deciding, your first year of college is a good time to try out a variety of courses. Taking electives allows you to explore new topics and develop knowledge that will make you a more well-rounded person. And if you’re still undecided, taking courses from areas that interest you can help you choose your major.

4. Reach Out to Professors and Mentors

To set yourself up for college success, you need to be willing to ask questions—and ask for help when you need it. It’s a good idea to reach out to your professors at the beginning of the semester and begin to form a relationship. When you have questions or want to review lecture material, visit them during their office hours. The important thing is to seek help as soon as you need it, so you can build your knowledge base for more advanced material as the semester continues.

5. Seek Out Resources for First-Generation Students

University staff and faculty are there to help answer your questions and navigate the college experience. Cassandra Gonzalez, first-generation coordinator at Azusa Pacific University’s Academic Success Center, wants students to remember that her office and resources—like APU’s GEN1 Scholars Program—are there to help first-generation students.

“No one is meant to go through this journey alone and if they can’t find their support at home, then they need to find it on campus,” Gonzalez said.

6. Get Involved on Campus

Your time at college is a chance to learn both in and out of the classroom and discover more about you and your interests. If you practice a sport or are part of a club in high school that you really enjoy, you can continue to participate in college or you can branch out and try something completely new!

With so many ways to get involved on campus, you’re bound to find something that interests you. Not only could this lead you to discover new passions, but you might also end up finding a group of like-minded friends.

How to Prepare for Academic Advising Appointments

If you find picking and choosing college courses to be a bit overwhelming or confusing, know that you’re not alone! Many students have trouble charting their course through college, but working with an academic advisor can really pay off.

At schools like Azusa Pacific University, academic advising is available year-round to help students stay on course to earn their degrees. Faculty advisors and academic advisors in the Academic Success Center can provide students with the resources they need to thrive.

“It’s incredibly valuable for students to track with their advisor for their own sense of calm and confidence around their graduation goals and program requirements,” said Jennifer Buck, PhD, director of APU’s interdisciplinary studies program and an assistant professor in the School of Theology. “Advisors serve as that lens to make sure nothing gets overlooked and a guide to help them gauge how to not, for example, overwhelm themselves with too many challenging classes in one semester.”

If you need additional guidance in choosing your next course load, here are a few ways an advising appointment can benefit you and tips for making the experience positive and productive.

Why Should I Go to Academic Advising?

First and foremost, academic counseling is essential for every college student—both students who are excelling in their courses and those who need help balancing a tough class with a job, sport, or home life. An advisor can make sure you’re taking the right courses and have a realistic schedule, and they can connect you to campus resources.

In addition, your academic advisor can help you find programs and opportunities you might not have known about. “I love dreaming with students about possibilities they didn’t even consider: a study abroad option, adding a minor, an independent study option, etc. I’m here to be their champion and do everything I can to make their ideas a reality,” Buck said.

Advisors can even help with questions not immediately related to their department; Buck shared that advisors are a great touch point for all university-related questions. “We often know—or we know who knows—how to answer their questions and get them connected to the right person or office,” she explained.

How Often Should I Meet with My Advisor?

Ideally, you should plan to talk with your advisor once a semester. Stephanie Gala, director of academic advising in the Academic Success Center at APU, said, “Heightened advising generally occurs the month prior to registration, and some academic departments may offer specific course scheduling advising.”

She also recommended that students seek advisement as needed to support their academic journey. “If a student wants to explore and define academic, career, and life goals, and which resources to use in this exploration process, an advising appointment will help unpack these types of questions,” said Gala.

Similarly, if there’s ever a moment in the semester when you feel discouraged or overwhelmed by your course load, don’t hesitate to check in with your advisor. Academic advisors want you to reach your educational goals and can offer valuable help along the way!

What Does an Advising Meeting Look Like?

Gala noted that APU has flourished with a shared advising model. This means that new, first-, and second-year students are supported through the Academic Success Center and receive faculty mentorship through their major departments. A student’s advisor creates an individualized academic plan so that all degree requirements are met in time for graduation.

For juniors and seniors, Gala said, “Faculty advisors also provide mentorship around vocation, graduate school, and career pathways that equip students to be difference makers now and upon graduation.”

Strategies for Ensuring a Successful Meeting

Your academic advising appointment is all about you and your educational goals. So, it helps to do some prep work! To ensure you get the most out of your meeting, Gala suggested the following tips:

  • Plan meetings ahead of time, so you’re ready before decisions need to be made.
  • Come prepared to share your academic hopes.
  • Consider bringing questions to ask your advisor.
  • Review your academic requirements, plan, and advising notes from previous meetings.
  • Engage and participate by explaining your personal academic goals and expectations.
  • Be honest about your circumstances and what you need to succeed.
  • If you don’t understand something, ask for clarity.
  • Leave knowing your next steps.

It’s helpful for students to be upfront with their advisors if they have time commitments that take place outside of school, such as a job. Having an idea of which classes you want to take is also beneficial, as it can help you both agree on a course of study that’s interesting and challenging.

In the end, all academic advisors want to see you succeed. Are you ready to achieve your degree and career goals? Contact Azusa Pacific University’s Academic Success Center to learn more and set up an appointment today.

Preparing for Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy School

The path to a career in physical therapy (PT) or occupational therapy (OT) starts well before graduate school. Getting on track toward PT or OT school starts with the right undergraduate classes, plenty of exposure to experts in the field and, most importantly, a passion to help others.

If you’re interested in pursuing a career in either of these fields, here’s what you need to know about becoming a physical therapist or an occupational therapist—and how to prepare for a vocation focused on helping people heal.

Is Physical or Occupational Therapy the Right Career for You?

Students looking to pursue a career in physical or occupational therapy likely have a strong interest in the human body and in helping people. But how do you know if a PT/OT career is the right choice?

“You need to love working with and serving people,” said Ryan Somers, PT, DPT, and assistant professor in the Department of Biology and Chemistry at Azusa Pacific University. “People are at the forefront of either profession, and if you do not enjoy working with people, then these professions might be really draining.”

In addition to working well with people, an important asset in physical therapy and occupational therapy is strong problem-solving skills. Because each patient needs specialized care, it’s up to the therapists to use their toolbox of techniques to help patients reach their individual goals.

Finally, a passion for the profession is vital to not only enjoying the work but also safely treating patients. “PT and OT are very difficult medical professions, and if you don’t have a passion for it, you could not only harm yourself but your patients,” Somers said. “Skills can be taught, but passion cannot.”

  • Take the right classes. Most physical therapy schools require students to take two biology classes, plus anatomy, physiology, a year of chemistry, and a year of physics. For occupational therapy schools, requirements include anatomy, physiology, and multiple psychology classes. For both PT and OT graduate programs, students will need to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) to apply.
  • Gain volunteer experience. Volunteering with a local, respected PT or OT professional will allow you to see your career goals in action. It also allows you to check if your passion for the field aligns with the focus needed to do the job well.
  • Join medical clubs. Leadership is an important trait to nurture for both fields of study. Joining medical clubs on campus, such as the Future Allied Health Leaders Association, not only looks great on graduate school applications, but also presents leadership opportunities to prepare you to best support your patients.
  • Concentrate on outreach. Lastly, pursue outreach opportunities. Whether that’s through your church or a local nonprofit organization, be sure to make note of this experience when applying for PT or OT programs. Outreach opportunities will give you hands-on experience and ensure you enjoy working in the profession.

Enhancing College Safety with the Safe APU App

At Azusa Pacific University, college safety has always been a priority. The Department of Campus Safety patrols the campus on bicycles, runs a late-night shuttle service, and escorts students to campus residential areas when requested.

APU also recently launched the new Safe APU mobile app, which helps to promote a safe community environment and gives students access to important safety features and information.

Connecting with the Community

“The Safe APU app helps us better connect with students, faculty, and staff,” said Richard Orr, corporal for the Department of Campus Safety. “By simply opening up the Safe APU app, our APU community can have access to valuable safety resources and connect with Campus Safety quickly. The Safe APU app is just one of the ways Campus Safety is creating new connections and relationships with the APU community.”

Executive director Paul Dennis spearheaded the app’s launch. When he joined APU two years ago, he wanted to create better communication and relationships between Campus Safety and the APU community.

Dennis and his team researched college safety apps and chose an app developer that has strong partnerships with other universities, like the University of California, Los Angeles and New York University. “They have continued to improve, based on feedback from those universities,” Orr said. “They were also able to customize Safe APU to help serve our unique community more effectively.”

“We want to utilize technology in whatever way we can,” Orr said. The Safe APU app includes a range of college safety features, including:

  • Safety notifications: Receive notifications from the Department of Campus Safety to stay updated and safe on campus. (Note: All emergency notifications will still be communicated through Everbridge.)
  • Emergency contacts: Know who to contact if there’s an emergency on campus.
  • Mobile Bluelight (Azusa campus only): This is a mobile version of the blue lights already installed on campus—you can send your real-time location to Campus Safety to notify them of an emergency location.
  • Friend walk: Send your location to a friend through email or SMS. Once your friend accepts your request, they can track your location to ensure you make it safely to your destination.
  • Tip reporting: Report a safety or security concern.
  • Safety toolbox: Access resources and information provided by Campus Safety.
  • I’m OK!: Send your location and a message that you’re okay to a friend or family member.
  • Campus map: Navigate the APU campus.
  • Crime map (Azusa campus only): See where recent crimes have been reported on or near campus.
  • Emergency plans: Prepare for disasters or emergencies, even if you aren’t connected to Wi-Fi or cellular data.
  • Parking (Azusa campus only): Access information regarding parking and vehicle and bicycle registration.

“If the APU community is prepared for an emergency or is aware of crime trends (such as viewing our crime map), we can better serve them and create a partnership that helps to keep them safe,” Orr said.

APU Earns Best College Rankings for First-Year Experiences and Social Mobility

Azusa Pacific University was named one of the top universities in the country for 2021, based on the best college rankings from

While overall ranking among national universities is a source of pride, APU stood out for its high marks in two different sub-categories. This year, APU ranked #27 in First-Year Experiences and #71 as a Top Performer on Social Mobility.

These rankings highlight the university’s commitment to providing top-notch experiences for its incoming students and pathways to social mobility for economically disadvantaged students. Here’s a closer look at what each of these sub-rankings means and why APU was recognized.

First-Year Experiences at APU

A student’s first-year experience is critical to their overall success in college. It even affects whether a student makes it to graduation.

With this in mind, universities like APU created first-year programs that go well beyond orientation. These programs—designed for both freshmen and transfer students—aim to provide a solid foundation that allows new students to get involved. This can help them feel a sense of belonging in the university community right away, which is an important factor in how new students navigate the rest of their college journeys.

Keep Reading: What to Look for in a First-Year College Experience

“In order for students to thrive, they need to feel a sense of belonging on campus and build self-advocacy skills, which first-year experiences help to foster,” said Stephanie Gala, MA, director of academic advising in APU’s Academic Success Center. “Setting up a foundation of support in the first year contributes to student success and, ultimately, degree completion.”

Last fall, incoming freshmen and transfer students highlighted the sense of community, awareness of campus resources, development in critical thinking, and discipline-specific content and knowledge as positive aspects of their first-year experiences—all of which are reflected in the U.S. News & World Report best college rankings.

“I believe the U.S. News ranking underscores APU’s efforts in welcoming new students with a heart of genuine care and authenticity,” said Alpha Joy Lawson, MS, transitions coordinator for APU’s Office of Campus Life. “Given this unique year of remote learning, our team has continued to serve new students with intentional care. The format, modality, and ‘how’ of our program may look different this year—but our mission, purpose, and our ‘why’ have remained the same. We believe it’s more important than ever.”

Moving Up Through Social Mobility

First-generation college students and those from low-income families are historically less likely to finish college. APU’s ranking for social mobility shows how the university continues to strive toward helping ensure all students—regardless of background or economic status—have more equitable paths toward success.

Keep Reading: 6 College Success Strategies for First-Generation Students

“One-size-fits-all doesn’t work,” said Gala. “Through programming, services, and events across campus, we strive to collaboratively provide what our student body needs from the moment they start their journey to their graduation and beyond, as alumni.”

APU’s social mobility ranking is in large part due to the success of the school’s two TRIO programs, which provide educational opportunities, financial literacy, and financial resourcing to first-generation college students, Pell Grant-eligible students, and/or those who qualify for academic accommodations.

“Additional financial aid opportunities like TRIO SSS Grant Aid help the most economically disadvantaged students at APU continue thriving academically,” said Armando Bustos, M.S., director of APU’s TRIO programs. “A student who can focus on their school work instead of how they will pay for their education is more likely to graduate.”

Committed to Success

APU’s recent rankings for first-year experiences and social mobility affirm the university’s commitment to helping its students succeed and pursuing equity and inclusion in higher education.

“These rankings demonstrate APU’s commitment to God-honoring academic excellence and efforts to be a diverse, inclusive, and equitable institution,” said Gala.

Through programs like TRIO and Alpha to events and support services for freshmen, the campus community works to meet the needs of all students—from first-year to first-generation—keeping them on the path to graduation and their future careers.

“At APU, we recognize that every student should be given the individual support and resourcing needed to reach their academic goals,” said Gala. “We are committed to our entire community’s success.”

The Future of Sports: How Research at APU Impacts Athletes

Across the world, sports have helped shape societies and generate interest in how humans reach, and exceed, their potential. But to fully understand these topics and make informed decisions that affect athlete safety, the future of sports must lean heavily on research.

Kinesiologists, researchers in physical education, and professionals on the front line—such as athletic trainers—collaborate to determine what’s best for athletes. The future of this science is being discovered and developed in real-time at colleges around the world.

In fact, Azusa Pacific University has been leading research efforts related to the sports world, helping to identify and promote safer, more effective athletic protocols. If you’re an athlete or are interested in pursuing a career in athletics, here’s what you need to know about the importance of research in the future of sports—and how to get involved.

Why Research in Sports Is Important

“Research is imperative to enable the development of health and safety legislation, educational policies, and best practices that ensure student-athlete health and safety,” said April Hoy ’95, assistant athletics director at APU.

The sheer number of sport participants across the world may help illustrate what’s at stake. The United Nations estimated that the global sports industry generates more than $756 billion annually. NCAA sports in America alone account for approximately $1 billion of that figure, according to Business Insider.

Research allows us to collect data and draw conclusions on important topics like:

It also helps establish science-backed standards that educate and protect those who work in the industry—coaches, trainers, sport psychologists, and athletic trainers.

“Without research, we are merely guessing as we develop sport legislation, education, and best practices,” Hoy noted. “And that does little to provide a sports environment of student-athlete health and safety.”

APU Research: Concussion in Sports

Home to 17 Division II sports programs and a number of sport-related undergraduate and graduate programs, APU has a deep connection and love for conducting athletic research. This, in large part, is thanks to Hoy, who goes to great lengths to ensure APU isn’t standing still.

A great example is the school’s involvement with the Concussion Assessment, Research, and Education (CARE) Consortium. Spearheaded by Hoy, APU’s participation is considered one of the project’s bright spots.

“April and her team have been an incredible part of the CARE Consortium,” said Steve Broglio, Ph.D., co-chair of the Consortium Operating Committee. “[APU has] consistently produced some of the highest enrollment and data quality numbers across all sites. They are the site we use as the example for best practices.”

Considering larger Division I institutions like the University of Michigan, the University of Oklahoma, the University of Florida, and the University of California, Los Angeles are also involved, this is high praise. And APU’s involvement is making a difference for athletes and students alike.

Keep Reading: Why You Should Consider Attending a Research University

“Student-athletes have been educated and treated with the best practices of concussion management,” said Hoy. “Athletic training, kinesiology, and physical therapy students have assisted us in this concussion management and have [also] been able to learn from these best practices.”

Athletic Training and the Future of Sports

In her 21 years of serving APU athletics, Hoy has established herself as a premier athletic trainer and a national leader in the growth and development of the industry in colleges and universities. “Athletic trainers are at the forefront of research, policy development, education, practices, and medical coordination and are essential healthcare providers for the health and safety of student-athletes,” she said.

Hoy is a former APU athlete herself, and one of her goals in conducting research is to specifically help advance the field of athletic training.

“I believe our participation in [the CARE Consortium] helps to validate the value of athletic training as an essential medical profession for sports,” Hoy said. “Hopefully this drives home the point we do much more than tape ankles and hydrate student-athletes.”

College Ratings: Alumni Rank APU Among Top 25 Universities Nationwide

When students are trying to find the school that’s the best fit for them, they often turn to college ratings. Sites like Niche, publications like U.S. News & World Report, and resources like Naviance offer information that can help guide their choices.

Yet it’s alumni who are really best positioned to provide ratings around their schools. They experienced everything their schools had to offer, and they know firsthand how well their education prepared them for their career paths.

In fact, a study published in The Journal of Consumer Affairs ranked the top 25 universities in the United States based on alumni ratings. A lot of big names made the list—Princeton, Yale, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology were the top three schools. Also on that list? Azusa Pacific University, which came in at 22, ahead of the University of Chicago, the University of California-Berkeley, and the University of Southern California.

Keep Reading: Why You Should Get Involved in Your College Alumni Association

The study asked alumni how strongly they agreed with 14 statements, such as:

  • You received a high-quality education.
  • You would recommend the educational path you took to other people like you.
  • Your education was worth the cost.
  • If you had to do it all over again, you would attend the same institution.

The college ratings study is significant for a couple of reasons. For one, it analyzed a lot of data. The information came from the Strada-Gallup Education Consumer Survey of 146,345 college graduates who attended 2,898 different colleges and universities. The Journal of Consumer Affairs, where the study’s results were published, is a credible, peer-reviewed journal.

Alumni Ratings Are Strong Indicators of Quality

A Forbes article about the study pointed out that, like Yelp or Consumer Reports, asking alumni how they rate their alma maters provides reviews from actual graduates.

The study’s author, Jonathan Rothwell, concluded that alumni ratings are a valuable way to predict college satisfaction. “Indeed, the mean ratings of at least 20 other alumni provide a better prediction of individual satisfaction than popular college rankings from media sources,” he wrote. “I conclude that survey-based consumer ratings of postsecondary institutions can provide valid and reliable quality comparisons.”

Rachel Johnson, Ed.D., senior director of alumni and parent engagement at APU, highlighted that alumni are in a unique position to share their thoughts about their educational experiences. “Alumni ratings provide a persuasive opportunity to showcase the benefits of the institution,” she said. “The alumni population has already experienced the educational, social, spiritual, and personal development opportunities, and their ratings provide valuable insight to prospective and current students.”

APU Alumni Value Their Education, Growth, and Opportunities

Johnson also noted that she has found many Azusa Pacific alumni describe their time on campus as a transformative experience on a holistic level. “There is a fierce sense of loyalty from APU alumni due to the spiritual growth, sense of community, exceptional academic standards, and leadership development opportunities they experienced here,” she explained. “Their endorsement underscores the value of the education we provide, and we are proud of the character and competence exemplified by those we graduate to serve in many diverse fields.”

Getting high scores from graduates speaks to the level of value each experienced both during their time on campus and afterward. It’s things like the tight-knit community, dedication to service, and access to potential career opportunities that set schools like APU apart from the rest.

Azusa Pacific University President Paul W. Ferguson, PhD, DABT, noted how APU’s high ratings from alumni showcase the value they’ve gained from their education. “Alumni ratings are among the best determinants of higher education quality, and APU’s inclusion on this list gives evidence that our extraordinary alumni continue to reflect positively on the contribution to their lives and careers from the academically rigorous, Christ-centered education they received long after they graduate,” he said.
