Faculty Friday: Tim Samoff’s Diligence as a Game & Program Director

For Tim Samoff, MFA, developing Azusa Pacific University’s Games and Interactive Media program was much like creating a video game. His dedication to God’s plan for his life mirrors the engagement, exuberance, and perseverance that one must use when moving to the next level.

Growing up in Ventura County, Samoff always loved changing the rules of board and sports games while playing with his family. He often drew maps and mazes of game ideas, but never imagined acquiring a professional career in the gaming industry. Samoff envisioned becoming a graphic designer or architect due to his love for drawing. However, after taking classes in both fields at Moorpark College, using computers to design for the first time, he realized that such careers did not fulfill his desire to create.

While working at Jiffy Lube and strengthening his skills as a guitarist on the side, Samoff noticed a job board advertising a junior graphic designer position. Although disinterested in the field, Samoff was compelled to discover the role for a company he was unaware of, and his curiosity led him to join an up-and-coming business making sounds for synthesizers. At 19-years-old, Samoff became the eighth person hired at the company. As computers began to change the software industry, he became a major influence as the organization transitioned into a video game company, where he worked on more than 40 games over the next 10 years. Samoff’s ideas tucked away in his journals finally came to life, and the spark he had for inventing games was able to shine.

Samoff returned to school at The California Institute of the Arts to earn his BFA in Experimental Animation in 1999, when a former professor from Moorpark College reached out and asked him to teach multimedia classes at the school. Samoff taught for two years, then moved to Kansas City, Mo., where he gained experience in a multitude of areas, including web design, videography, special effects, user experience work, and serious game design for Sprint, making learning and development games for the company’s employees and users to better understand new devices. When the recession hit in 2008, he was laid off, and pursued contract work temporarily. In 2009, old colleagues from Moorpark College reached out asking Samoff to build a game design program. He moved back to Southern California, devoting nine years to the development of a highly successful program. Students who graduated from Samoff’s program have gone on to work for major gaming corporations, such as Nintendo.

In 2018, Samoff began his career at APU, bringing his eagerness, passion, and talent to generate the gaming program that has given students the resources and opportunities to pave their way in the video game industry. “One of things that sets APU apart from other schools is that our freshmen start making games during their first semester in our program,” he said. Their enthusiasm to create games that incorporate depth and storytelling are what make teaching a rewarding career. Samoff has made many changes in the program in order to give students the most impactful education.

Last spring, the first cohort of the game design program graduated. “Those students are exceptionally resilient, worked together to solve problems, and pulled together an impressive capstone project which earned several video reviews online by independent players,” Samoff said. He recalled the School of the Arts Industry Spotlight, where students dressed up, snapped photos on the red carpet at Warner Bros. Studios, and presented the games they poured their hearts into.

Samoff’s experience at APU has been formative for his understanding of pursuing one’s vocation. “Many students come here with the certainty that their calling is to create games, and they do everything to fulfill their goals, serve God, and be a force of good in the industry,” he said.

When asked what advice he would give to students who hope to become difference makers in the gaming field, Samoff said, “Design with a purpose. The games that are the most memorable are the ones that have a deeper meaning. Approach creativity with the desire to communicate your story and what stirs inside you.”

He added that students are capable of doing whatever they put their minds to, and to always continue learning. “You can’t rely on anyone else’s motivation. It has to be your own.”

Reflecting on his lifelong adventure of creating games and finding joy in teaching, Samoff remembered a time during his early career when he strayed away from his faith. “I was around so many different people and began making a lot of money, but when I reconnected with Christianity later in life, I realized how important it is to remain faithful,” he said. Samoff strives to serve as an example of staying rooted in one’s morality, especially in an industry that can easily strip goodness away. “Seasons of doubt happen in life, and we shouldn’t necessarily regret our experiences, even the bad ones. Instead we should view each one as an opportunity to learn and grow in our faith.”

Samoff’s life has taken him through levels of adventure, trials, discovery, and victory. Like a video game that continues to draw the player in, Samoff’s drive to fulfill his calling for Christ and equip students to pursue their dreams, makes his story one as captivating and inspiring as a game’s hero.

Faith-Informed Excellence in Science and Research

From undergraduate biology majors exploring the intricacies of human drug-metabolizing enzymes to biotech master’s degree students utilizing 3D tissue models of human organs to minimize animal testing, APU students are fully engaged in high-level research in their fields. With access to multimillion-dollar, industry-standard equipment, along with professor-mentors to lead projects, students conduct experiments, submit papers for publication and make original contributions to the sciences well before graduation.

This high commitment to research is reflected in APU’s status as the only institution in the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities (CCCU) to earn a prestigious R2 designation from the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education—the most influential rating organization among colleges and universities. Rather than choosing between a Christ-centered education or access to esteemed research opportunities, students find both at APU.

And opportunities only continue to grow. Earlier this year, APU announced a $2 million investment in research infrastructure and equipment. Among other upgrades, the university introduced a new bioengineering facility in September—the only one of its kind among CCCU schools. New equipment includes a Cell-Ink Bio-X 3D tissue printer, allowing students and faculty to construct tissue models of major organs, including skin, liver, heart, and brain.

“Our philosophy is to open doors for undergraduate students to use these powerful tools that would normally be off limits to them,” said Philip Cox, PhD, associate professor of biology and chemistry. “We want our students to have hands-on experience that will give them a competitive edge in their future workplace.”

If you glimpse inside the Segerstrom Science Center, you might find Cox and a group of student researchers gathered around the newly acquired triple quadrupole mass spectrometry system. The equipment quantifies drugs and other small molecules in complex solutions to better understand how the body processes prescription drugs.

Just one department over, under the guidance of Aisha Chen, PhD, assistant professor of engineering and computer science, a group of physical therapy, nursing, and computer science students combine skill sets to design and test video software. Their goal? To predict and prevent falls in nursing centers.

“How valuable are these research experiences? Completely invaluable,” said Chen. “Not only are they applying what they’ve learned in class, but they’re also acquiring knowledge and skills beyond that. They’re making impactful contributions as the next generation of Christian scientists.”

APU Alumnus Dave Canales ’03 Hired as Carolina Panthers Head Coach

After an athlete’s playing career wraps up, the pinnacle of professional sports is becoming a head coach at the highest level: the major leagues. Azusa Pacific University alumnus Dave Canales ’03 reached that pinnacle yesterday when he was named the head coach of the National Football League’s Carolina Panthers. David Tepper, the Panthers’ owner, said “Dave’s background is rooted in success. He has an innovative mindset and positive energy that connects well with players and staff. We are impressed with his ability to bring out the best in players.”

Canales will be tasked with coaching last year’s No. 1 overall pick, Bryce Young, and guiding the offense of the team that ranked last in the NFL this year to new heights. Canales becomes the only active Hispanic head coach in the league, and only the fifth in NFL history.

“I am extremely proud of David, and happy for him and the entire Canales family,” said APU Athletic Director Gary Pine. “He is an excellent leader, and he’ll do a marvelous job of guiding men, both on and off the field.”

Canales takes the helm of the Panthers after serving for one season as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator. In Tampa Bay, Canales helped with the resurgence of quarterback Baker Mayfield. Before the season, Mayfield went from a former No. 1 overall pick to a perennial backup. Canales was not daunted by the task of reviving Mayfield’s career. Under Canales’ guidance, Mayfield passed for a career high in passing yards (4,044) and passing touchdowns (28), enhancing his reputation as a quarterback and likely earning a long- term contract.

Under Canales’ coaching, the Buccaneers offense as a whole improved from 25th in the NFL to 20th overall, seeing a sizable jump even after losing the greatest quarterback in NFL history, Tom Brady, to retirement. Tampa Bay overachieved expectations, not only reaching the playoffs, but also knocking off the defending conference champion Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild Card Round before narrowly losing to the Detroit Lions in the Divisional Round.

Prior to Tampa Bay, Canales spent most of his coaching career in Seattle under future Hall of Fame head coach Pete Carroll. Canales started as a quality control coach for the Seahawks from 2010-12 before working his way up to assistant quarterbacks coach (2013-14), receivers coach (2015-17), passing game coordinator (2020-21), and quarterbacks coach (2018-19, 2022). During Canales’ tenure in Seattle, the Seahawks made the playoffs 10 times, winning the NFC championship twice (2013-14) and the Super Bowl once (2013).

Canales’ impact on the Seahawks offense and team success cannot be overstated. Former Seahawks star Russell Wilson was a perennial Pro Bowl quarterback with Canales’ coaching, earning nine Pro Bowl selections from 2012-2021 before he was traded to the Denver Broncos, more than any other quarterback in the NFL during that span. Canales also helped revitalize the career of quarterback Geno Smith in 2022. Smith had been relegated to being a backup from 2015-21. But after Wilson was traded, Canales transformed Smith into a Pro Bowl signal caller who achieved career highs in passing yards (4,282) and touchdowns (30) while leading the NFL in completion percentage (69.8).

Before Seattle, Canales served under Carroll for one year as an assistant strength coach and video assistant at the University of Southern California. Earlier, Canales spent three years (2006-08) at El Camino College as tight ends coach, special teams coordinator, and quarterbacks coach. Canales began his coaching career at his alma mater, Carson High School, after graduating from APU in 2003.

Going back to his playing days, Canales was a five-year member of the APU football program (1999-2003), serving as a team captain in 2002 and 2003. During his time at APU, the Cougars posted a 36-15 record and made three playoff appearances. As a wide receiver for the Cougars, Canales caught 27 passes for 298 yards and had a touchdown reception in his senior season. Canales graduated in 2003 with a bachelor’s degree in business.

International Voices: Madey Sule ’27 Reflects the Love of God and Her Family in All Her Endeavors

Madey Sule ’27 has always been fascinated by the way mechanisms work. From cell phones to ceiling fans, she always wondered how the circuits caused such devices to function. Her curiosity, interest in improving day-to-day life, and yearning to answer God’s calling gave her the drive to leave her home in Nigeria for the first time in order to pursue an engineering degree at Azusa Pacific University.

Growing up in Jos, Plateau, Sule’s parents were determined to provide her with the best education. She attended an international school, and knew from a young age that she wanted to go to college in America. When she began applying to many universities, Sule was discouraged because many were too expensive to afford. When she discovered APU, Sule was unsure whether she would be able to come, since she was unable to obtain a visa in order to attend an in person interview for her scholarship. She recalled grabbing a journal and writing, “God, I don’t understand why this has to be so difficult, but I’m going to trust you. You’re still in control and I know you have my best interest at heart.”

Fortunately, Sule completed her interview online, and remembered waking up in the middle of the night receiving a congratulatory email with her acceptance. “I knew God was with me. He saw me personally. He loves me and wants me to succeed.”

Stepping on an airplane to leave her country was bittersweet, as Sule was eager to discover new opportunities, but sad to say goodbye to her home. “Nigeria has some of the most hardworking people I’ve ever met. Amidst struggles, sacrifice is a norm,” she said. Sule reflected on how common it is for Nigerian parents to pour everything into their childrens’ education with a happy heart. “I hope to be a representative of the love and dedication Nigerians share.”

Sule’s passion for studying engineering stems from her desire to give back to her country and develop ways to improve life, such as creating better means of food transportation. “While I was privileged enough to not have to worry often about the power going out, not having running water, or having to wash my clothes by hand, these are common occurrences in Nigeria, and I want to be able to give back to the people and country I love,” she said.

Biology was always Sule’s favorite subject in school, and she aspires to pursue biomedical engineering. In high school, when Sule learned about how prosthetic limbs work, she knew she wanted to be a part of giving people hope, whether it be through prosthetics or other ways of making life easier for those in need.

“I never thought I wanted to be an engineer, because I honestly thought I was not smart enough, but I realized there’s no reason to think that,” she said. “I chose engineering as my major to prove to myself that I can do it.” Her eyes lit up and she couldn’t help smiling as she said, “And now I love it!”

Sule’s joy shines through immensely as she discussed her gratitude that God led her to APU. “God has become more real to me here. My faith expanded astronomically when I saw His goodness play out in my own life,” she said. Like many international students, Sule has discovered community in the Third Culture Kids club (TCK), where she was able to make friends from the start, proudly share her love for God and Nigeria with others, and learn their stories as well.

When she’s not deciphering her next engineering project, Sule enjoys going to the gym, playing sports— especially basketball–and getting to spend time with her friends. She values each day that she gets to increase her knowledge, cultivate friendships, and discover more about her faith.

Sule’s willingness to serve others through her passion for science reflects the love and light that shines so brightly for her back at home. Her parents and two younger sisters continually cheer her on from afar. Sule is dedicated to pursuing what she loves, doing everything for the glory of God, and hopes to give as much love and more back to those who have loved her so deeply.

International Voices: Jonathon Krohn ’27 Shares His Love for Different Cultures and Servant Leadership

For Jonathon Krohn ’27, traveling the world and being immersed in different cultures is at the heart of growth, finding community, and following God’s calling for his life. Having already been to 10 countries, and eager to visit more, Krohn’s dream to become a travel nurse stems from his passion for diversity and helping others.

Krohn’s parents immigrated from the U.S. to Peru, and he was born in Arequipa. They moved to Abancay, a small mountain town, where he grew up. “I’ve lived in the middle of the Andes, at one point, and later in Lima, Peru’s capital. I love anything outdoors, being in nature, and appreciating God’s creation,” he said. At 14-years-old, Krohn’s family moved to Ethiopia to expand their missionary work and discover better educational opportunities for their children. Krohn recalled feeling ready for a change, expressing his desire to seek adventure, try new things, and travel across various regions.

While the language barrier in Ethiopia presented challenges when Krohn first moved there, his experience was a formative part of developing his admiration for living in a wide range of cultures. “In both Peru and Ethiopia, lending a helping hand is expected rather than praised,” Krohn said. He reflected on the ways Ethiopian meals brought people together, as food is often served in one dish, shared among many.

Witnessing servant leadership led him to pursue nursing. “I love helping people physically, spiritually, and emotionally. I want a role with a holistic approach,” he said. He found out about Azusa Pacific University through another missionary family he was friends with in Peru, whose daughter studied nursing. Krohn turned in his application one day before it was due and was certain APU was the next stop on his travel journey after receiving his acceptance.

Unfortunately, Krohn struggled during his first year of college. Transitioning to the U.S. was difficult, and Krohn experienced mental health challenges, often wrestling with his understanding of identity. After failing two nursing classes and leaving the nursing program, Krohn decided to take a gap year and live with his family, who had just moved to Chicago, yearning for his support system. While he went through a period of feeling uncertain about the future, people and circumstances constantly reminded him of the community he appreciated having at APU. Krohn even ran into a parent wearing an “I heart APU” t-shirt at the Sistine Chapel while visiting Rome.

“I felt like God was saying something to me whenever I’d run into an APU alumni in a completely different state or country,” Krohn said. “These seemingly random interactions kept building to the point that within a week of accepting where I was at, I knew God was telling me to return to APU.”

Krohn switched fields and began studying allied health in fall 2023 with the intention to enter an accelerated nursing program after graduating. “I’m so grateful to God for where He’s led me. He was here at APU through every challenge, in Chicago with my doubts, and He’s here with me now,” Krohn said. The uplifting atmosphere on campus ultimately drew him back. “There is no geographical location that I will ever fit into. I’m not fully American, or Peruvian, or Ethiopian, but even so there’s always a community of Third Culture Kids that I’ll always fit into.”

Krohn often encourages his friends and peers to travel and meet people from various parts of the world. “I take any chance to experience something different, because when we become so accustomed to the same thing, we limit the opportunities to change,” he said. Meeting a multitude of people around the globe has strengthened Krohn’s faith and facilitated personal growth.

Faculty Friday: Aisha Chen’s Conscientiousness and Commitment to Mentorship

Many professors have a heart for mentorship, and for Aisha Chen, PhD, creating connections with students is as thrilling as developing code, a passion of hers that has led her to many research and computer science discoveries. As an engineering professor, she strives to not only offer students the tools to help them succeed in the future, but to broaden their perspectives about humanity and how their role in science can further God’s plan for them.

Originally from Pittsburgh, Chen loved solving puzzles as a kid. She enjoyed learning about math, but just like the trial and error that comes with coding, Chen’s journey through different scientific fields was met with uncertainty. After changing her major three times in college, Chen graduated with a degree in applied mathematics and a minor in chemistry. She even changed her degree in graduate school, starting a path to earn a PhD in mathematics, before switching to applied mathematics and engineering.

Chen’s interest in biomechanics and mobility led her to conduct research in gait and posture. She is currently collecting data that investigates if music increases stability and mobility in certain disorders, including stress based disorders. In 2019, she co-wrote a peer-reviewed article regarding data in Parkinson’s stability research, a meaningful experience as researchers read and cite her work.

Beginning her first full time teaching career at Azusa Pacific University in 2020 was an exciting experience for Chen, as she was glad to work in a Christian community and appreciated the fellowship that exists on a daily basis. Some of her favorite APU memories include worshiping together during Welcome Weekend and developing research projects with her students, especially when testing virtual reality.

Ultimately, the students who Chen instructs are the reason she loves being a professor. “The students are grateful to be able to learn, they’re so respectful, and they enter the lab with energy to learn,” Chen said. Her favorite class to teach is Intro to Computer Science, because she gets to instill skills for the first time in the freshmen’s lives, giving them the enthusiasm to find their calling in computer science and math. Chen hopes students never lose the wonder of how mechanisms work.

Chen implements faith in her classes by reminding students to be cautious when building codes, referring to stories in history and people she’s witnessed developing pride while working on creations. She teaches students that God is the ultimate creator.

“Some presume that science and faith are at odds with each other, but the most important thing is to maintain a relationship with God and strive to be the best person you can,” she said.

When students walk into Chen’s classroom, they often hear wise words of advice in relation to morality and humanity as a whole. “People have a huge capacity to do both good and evil, and while that’s often misunderstood in various contexts, the most valuable lesson I’ve learned is to have grace,” she said. “Forgiveness has to be a norm. I try my best to be empathetic and give grace while also setting boundaries when I need to.” Chen serves as an example of being a difference maker, committing to hearing her students’ feedback and seeking to improve each year. “Before you make a change, you have to know what the problem is. Listening must come first,” she said.

Chen’s dedication to sharing authenticity, ethicality, and spiritual growth in her students’ experiences is reflective of the deep love she shares for Christ. By staying rooted in her values and never giving up on her goals, Chen exemplifies conscientiousness in her work as an engineer and professor.

International Voices: Hesou Zetelian ’26 Fearlessly Jumped into the Unknown and Discovered His Passions at APU

Jumping into the unknown can stir a range of emotions, from excitement for a fresh start, to confusion about where decisions will lead. For Hesou Zetelian ’26, diving into change has produced a domino effect of finding his passions, community, and faith.

Born in Lebanon, Zetelian’s ethnically Armenian family moved to Canada when he was only one month old. They lived there for eight years before moving to Spain to pursue missionary work, where he spent the next nine years. Zetalian recalls his mom packing his toys and selling items at yard sales, feeling like his life was being given away. Fortunately, despite sleeping on floor mattresses for the first few weeks in his new home in Madrid, he grew to admire the land and culture that would influence some of his most formative years.

One of the things Zetelian struggled with most while transitioning was finding the balance between his personal and social life. Growing up in an Armenian community in Canada made nearly every aspect of his life merge together, but in Spain he attended an American school, and sought to understand his peers’ culture better. “I was my Armenian self at home, but I needed to learn Spanish and interact with Spaniards how they would. At the same time I was navigating a new school and trying to learn pop culture references that were new to me,” he said. This mixing of different cultures that were so prevalent in Zetelian’s life led him to wonder which box he fit into culturally, and how to embrace all aspects of his identity.

Living in Spain led Zetelian to admire and incorporate their culture in his life. “Spain is made by its warm people. They’re laid back, easy going, and respect others’ rest and space,” he said. His favorite memories include family gatherings on Sundays, as many eat outside together on the patios and children play late into the night.

When Zetelian found out about Azusa Pacific University through a friend who applied during his senior year of high school, he was uncertain about whether or not he’d be able to afford college and move to another country again. He took a leap of faith, and trusted God through every part of the process. “The biggest reason I came to APU was because I felt like the people wanted me to be here as much as I did,” he said. Having become adaptable through changes in life, Zetelian jumped into the unknown again and started his freshman year in Fall 2022.

Zetelian studied allied health during his first semester, but quickly learned it was not where his heart was at. He tried liberal studies for a while before switching to psychology, but he still felt like something was missing. Last fall, he decided to study cinematic arts, and it was the perfect fit. “I fell in love with film. It’s so life giving. I don’t see it as school because I’m learning what I love. I trust that God put this passion on my heart for a reason,” he said. Zetalian is now earning a BFA in cinematic arts with a minor in psychology and honors humanities. Zetelian hopes to become a director and create cross cultural films that speak to different backgrounds and ethnicities.

“I want to tell stories that are meaningful and unheard of, like being a third culture kid.”

The people Zetelian has met and built connections with at APU so far has led him to realize that being a part of many cultures is a strength, something that allows him to connect and relate to a variety of people. “Every new opportunity has broadened my mind about the world. I’ve learned that I can make others feel seen and heard while getting to know their backgrounds and appreciating the story they have to tell,” he said. Zetelian loves celebrating diversity through his studies in film and immersion in APU’s community, full of many international students like himself. “At the end of the day we’re all just people. Traveling and being at APU has taught me that our differences don’t have to separate us. We all fit into God’s picture.”

Zetelian aims to represent all aspects of the cultures that make him who he is. He hopes to implement Spanish culture through personability. “My experience in Spain taught me to have a lighthearted demeanor when interacting with others, and to find joy in each other’s company.” His Armenian and Lebanese cultures have taught Zetelian to spread hospitality, which he often does through his role as a resident advisor in Engstrom hall.

Faith has played a vital role in Zetelian’s life and growth. “When everything else is uncertain, faith is the one thing that is stable,” he said. Zetelian values gratitude, pausing to thank God for the view of the mountains when walking between campuses every day. He was baptized last year and enjoys worshiping in ways that are new to him through chapel.

“There is so much beauty in coming together to praise God, and realizing that there’s more than one way to glorify Him.”

Faculty Friday: Terry Dobson Empowers Students Through Inviting Spaces While Inspiring Creativity

Through every transformative experience in life, we gather an appreciation for knowing and loving others better, and confidently expressing our passion for becoming a part of Christ’s bigger picture. This is the lens through which Terry Dobson, MFA, sees design as collaborative opportunities to serve, and like every designer’s eye for creating something enticing and new, Dobson has an eye for creating an inviting and growthful space for his students.

During the first week of his sabbatical in spring 2019, the Dobson family adopted a six-year-old boy from South Korea. Exactly four months later while dropping him off at preschool, Dobson too was adopted by a parrot who flew down and landed on his shoulder. “When it chose me, I realized for the first time what it truly feels like to be one of God’s children,” Dobson added that this is how he learned he was a bird-person and after the pandemic his family adopted a new parrot, Igor. This bird changed Dobson’s life by accompanying him in his teaching on campus every day for the next two years and was just one example of how transformation has happened in the most unexpected of ways for him.

Originally from a small town in southeast England, Dobson always dreamed of America throughTV shows, toys, candy, pop music, and culture He first came to the U.S. at the end of his freshman year in college, to be a counselor at a summer camp in upstate New York. From there he landed an internship in Boston by cleverly packaging his portfolio as tiny tea-chests sent on the anniversary of the Boston Tea Party noting that “The British are coming back!” He then earned a full scholarship to Yale, where he received his MFA in graphic design before he was recruited by Disney.

Impressed by a concept he created from his lifetime interest in the millennium, Disney Imagineering hired him as a theme park show designer where he worked for the next 2 decades. “Since story ideas are the currency of Hollywood, one great concept is all it takes to open the next door ” he said, as he recounted the wide variety of roles he stepped into during his tenure. His contributions to Disney included working on the Virtual Magic Kingdom: Disney’s first massively-multiplayer online game which allowed players to win virtual rewards from interaction within both the virtual park and the real Disneyland. Coming full circle back to the project that got him hired, Dobson was chosen as creative director to lead the team designing Epcot’s Millennium Village Pavilion, which was the centerpiece of the millennial celebrations at Walt Disney World. This 60,000 square foot attraction showcased more than 50 countries under one roof, all sharing their gifts to the world. This won Dobson and his team the coveted Thea award in the year 2000 for the best Themed Entertainment Attraction.

While working at Disney for 20 years greatly expanded Dobson’s opportunities as a designer, he and his wife longed for a better work/life balance that made room for their newfound faith together. When Dobson began teaching at Azusa Pacific University in 2012, his life changed through the fulfillment he found in helping his students to grow not just as designers, but as people, and most importantly as Christians.

“Everything I ever worked on at Disney has now disappeared because it was transient and ephemeral, whereas now that my product is the impact I have on people, which is eternal and everlasting.”

Dobson’s vision for the future of design at APU focuses on ways to extend the student learning experience by connecting the Bachelors in Design Studies to the new online Masters in User Experience Design. “The secret ingredient APU graduates are renowned for is also the most sought-after quality needed to be successful as a designer in the field of UXD—empathy,” he said.

Dobson is passionate about diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives and strives to quickly discern his students’ different learning styles so they don’t feel alone navigating college. “I’m a big proponent of heuristic learning. I want students to discover or learn something for themselves, but what’s more important is that they don’t have to be or feel alone while doing it,” he said.

The Honors College Presents a Taylor Swift Colloquy

Swifties in Azusa Pacific University’s Honors College were enchanted to get together for an evening of rich conversation surrounding the world’s most renowned popstar: Taylor Swift. Students couldn’t shake off their excitement when it came to celebrating and diving deep into the lyrical intricacies within Swift’s writing.

On Feb. 2, students gathered in Mary Hill classrooms to listen to their favorite songs, enjoy “Welcome to New York” style pizza, and engage in discussions analyzing lyrics. Each student received a ticket resembling Swift’s Eras Tour, with an assignment for one out the three colloquy options. The glitter gel pen, fountain pen, and quill pen colloquies, refer to playlists Swift created with Apple Music, categorizing her songs into separate themes. According to Swift, glitter gel pen songs “remind you not to take yourself too seriously,” fountain pen songs are “modern, personal stories written like poetry about those moments you remember all too well where you can see, hear, and feel everything in screaming detail,” and quill pen songs are “like you’re a 19thcentury poet crafting your next sonnet by candlelight.”

The masterminds behind this event were Amanda Dominguez ’25, Emily Wahl ’25, and Natasha Zimmerman ’24. The three students, alongside Curtis Isozaki, Director of Strategic Initiatives & Enrollment in the Honors College, planned an evening Swifties will remember forevermore. Their attention to detail, from a polaroid photo op, to “paper rings” ring pops, and a board with lyrics color coded by era, brought fans together, revealing the tight-knit community that exists both in the Honors College and among Swifties.

“The idea came at a time when we were looking for ways to have fun while also recognizing we are a school filled with people who love Taylor Swift,” Dominguez said. “Natasha and Emily have brought the creative vision of the Taylor universe to life through their commitment to making the event true to her lyrics and eras.” Rocking a red scarf, Dominguez led students in the quill pen colloquy to explore deep themes of romance, exile, and nature.

“I am so proud of both Amanda and Natasha for the work they have done to make this event happen, and I am so happy that we could provide a space to bring Swifties in the Honors College together,” Wahl said. She fearlessly facilitated discussion in the fountain pen colloquy, where students interpreted vivid imagery and poignantly written scenes.

“Putting the event together was so much fun. It was great to get to see so many people celebrating the same artist together,” Zimmerman said. “We had the time of our lives!”

As leader of the glitter gel pen colloquy, Zimmerman made the whole place shimmer, channeling upbeat energy as students drew connections between some of Swift’s most popular songs.

As a long-time Swiftie myself, I am beyond grateful for the team that brought us together to join in our love for Swift’s music. Like any colloquy, the event provided a time for intellectual thought that is enhanced and supported by the people who participate. Being both a Swiftie and member of the honors college lead me to conclude one vital lesson: community is ultimately at the heart of growth and finding oneself. Even from something as seemingly insignificant as discovering that someone resonates with the same line in a song as I do attests to the fact that when we gather to discuss art and literature that moves us, friendships deepen, bonds form, and many feel less lonely. We lovingly cultivate connections when finding those who are willing to engage in rich conversation, in both agreement and disagreement about a topic. The Taylor Swift Colloquy was a reminder that conversation, whether about a classical text or pop culture icon, never goes out of style.

Faculty Feature: Dave Dunaetz Branches into Multiple Fields of Study While Sharing Christ’s Love

Dave Dunaetz, PhD, has had a thirst for knowledge his whole life. While he has acquired six graduate degrees, published many academic articles, and earned awards for his dedication in a variety of fields, Dunaetz’s desire to share the Gospel is the core motivation behind all his work.

Originally from Manhattan Beach, Calif. Dunaetz grew up in a non-Christian household. His grandparents experienced a radical conversion, and took Dunaetz and his brother to Sunday School once, where they were taught ideas about life and God that neither had been exposed to before. This experience planted the seed for a lifetime’s worth of growth awaiting Dunaetz. However, his faith transformation was gradual, and Dunaetz did not fully commit his life to Christ until high school, after a pivotal break up.

“I was invited to a church concert the same week she broke up with me. I truly understood the gospel for the first time and gave my life to Christ. It was a conversion far more life-changing than I foresaw. For the first time, I became acutely concerned about other people and their needs,” he said.

While Dunaetz hoped to attend a Christian college, his family encouraged him to go to Harvey Mudd where he majored in engineering, with the intention of becoming a tent-making missionary. During a six-week mission trip in New York City, he met his wife, Karen Dunaetz, MFT, to whom he has been married for 39 years, and who shared the same interest in pursuing missionary work. At the time, Dunaetz’s father made a deal with him, agreeing to pay for seminary if Dunaetz would pursue a masters in engineering as well, which he earned from the University of Southern California. “I thought getting my masters would be a lost year, since I was more concerned with ministry than engineering, but I gained teaching experience at 22 that has stuck with me ever since,” he said.

After Dunaetz and his wife each completed their MDiv at Denver Seminary, they decided to move to France, where they spent the next 17 years doing church planting and evangelism. They planted two churches that are still running today. Karen Dunaetz had studied French as an undergraduate, and even though Dave Dunaetz struggled with learning the language before, he ended up earning a Masters in Teaching French as a Second Language.

Dunaetz looks back at his time in France with fondness because of the transformation he witnessed in people’s lives. He especially enjoyed working with youth groups to instill leadership skills that many members are implementing in the same churches today. Dunaetz faced various challenges while helping these churches move beyond missionary dependence. When he and his wife returned to the U.S., Dunaetz began working toward his PhD in Social Psychology at Claremont Graduate University, conducting research in conflict in Christian organizations.

Dunaetz began teaching at Azusa Pacific University as an adjunct professor in 2007 in the psychology department. In 2015, the Organizational Psychology program opened, where he now teaches statistics and research methods, and serves as Chair of the Department of Leadership and Organizational Psychology. Dunaetz equips students with the tools to approach data with the intent to discover trends that allow people and organizations to function better. “Statistics is all about finding truth, and the same applies to loving people. If I want to love others well, I have to assess and understand their needs instead of projecting my own onto them,” he said.

Students in Dunaetz’s classes are always enrolled alongside a cute classmate— Beep Beep the teddy bear. “When Beep Beep gives the wrong answer to a question, everyone wants to help him understand and chimes in when we’re solving a problem,” Dunaetz said. Beep Beep always attends the hooding ceremony for the MS in Organizational Psychology graduates to congratulate them on their accomplishment.

Dunaetz strives to equip students who graduate with their masters in organizational psychology so that they can continue to learn and stay up to date with research.
