Interim President Dr. Monique Guillory praised Boyle’s impact, stating, “We truly value Trustee Boyle’s dynamic energy, guidance, and support at Dillard and congratulate her on this momentous achievement. She is an invaluable asset to the boards and organizations she serves and the entire New Orleans community, which benefits greatly from her leadership and service.”

Trustee Boyle’s connection to Dillard runs deep, as her parents, Ernest and Connie Williams Boyle, met on the university’s campus. Ernest Boyle, Jr., entered Dillard University in 1951, and shortly after was drafted into the Korean War, where he served his country with honors. Connie D. Williams Boyle was a 1955 graduate who was active in various campus organizations.  She served as editor of the Courtbouillon, the school newspaper, as associate editor of the first Dillard University yearbook, and as the Vice President of Future Teachers of America. In 2017, Kim Boyle established The Ernest and Connie Boyle Endowed Scholarship in her parents’ honor.

The Martinet Legal Society itself shares a rich history with Dillard University. In 1876, its namesake, Louis A. Martinet was the first African-American graduate of Straight University Law School, a predecessor institution of Dillard. Martinet Society founders include Dillard graduates Robert F. Collins, Sr., ’51, Nils R. Douglas ’50, and Revius O. Ortique, Jr., ’47. Collins and Douglas worked closely with fellow Dillard alumnus Lolis E. Elie, who represented the Consumers’ League of Greater New Orleans during the historic 1960 boycott of white-owned businesses along Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard.

Trustee Boyle is the third trustee to receive this honor. Judge Carl E. Stewart ’71, was the 2015 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, and past trustee Justice Revius O. Ortique Jr. ’47, was the 1999 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient.

Celia Weatherhead’s and her late husband Albert’s support for Tulane has spanned decades, focusing primarily on increasing access to Tulane and establishing the Weatherhead Presidential Chairs. Through these presidential chairs, the university recruits renowned faculty in emerging fields who engage in cross-disciplinary teaching and research on a global scale. In addition, the Weatherheads established the Weatherhead Scholars Program, which provides scholarships for academically talented students who are committed to public service.

“Today, we make history with one of the greatest milestones ever announced at Tulane,”Michael A. Fitts

“Celia is an inspiration in her unwavering dedication to make the world a better place through research and education,” Board of Tulane Chair David Mussafer said. “With her support, Tulane will continue to identify the causes, make the links and discover the strategies necessary to improve human health today and far into the future. Her gift is lifechanging and lifesaving.”

Celia Weatherhead’s latest contribution will provide seed funding to support the development of research hubs in areas such as cancer control, climate change and health, health equity, health policy, infectious disease epidemiology, public health workforce development, and applications of artificial intelligence to the study of population health. Her giving will also further strengthen the faculty and enhance student support, especially in the form of scholarships.

In addition, her gift will advance Tulane’s plan to expand the downtown campus, where the Celia Scott Weatherhead School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine is located. Tulane’s downtown expansion is key to reimagining New Orleans as a hub of biotechnology and innovation.

“President Fitts’ plans to use research and discovery as economic drivers for the New Orleans region, and Dean Thomas LaVeist’s passionate resolve to confront and ameliorate health inequities holds the greatest promise to bring about positive change,” Weatherhead said. “I am thrilled to support the university’s goals and long-term strategy for educating public health professionals, empowering groundbreaking research and building a healthier world, starting with the city of New Orleans, but aiming for global results.”

LaVeist, Dean of the Celia Scott Weatherhead School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, hailed the historic and generational impact of the gift.

“Her gift is a true game changer,” said LaVeist, who is also a Weatherhead Presidential Chair in Health Equity. “It will further propel research into the most devastating diseases and the most concerning and complex issues of our times. It will provide generations of students with the skills and knowledge they need to help heal our world. We are overwhelmed with gratitude and energized for the future.”

“From scholarships and fellowships to expanded research opportunities addressing next-generation public health concerns, Celia Weatherhead continues to enhance the prestige, strengthen the capabilities and deepen the real-world impact of our university,” said Robin Forman, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost at Tulane. “The future of our university is brighter than ever with the establishment of the Celia Scott Weatherhead School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine.”

In addition to her philanthropy, Weatherhead is deeply involved at Tulane. She currently serves on the Public Health Dean’s Advisory Council, the school’s top advisory board, and is an emeritus member of the Board of Tulane, the university’s main governing body. In 2023, she was awarded the Dermot McGlinchey Lifetime Achievement Award, which honors alumni who have demonstrated service, involvement and commitment to Tulane and their hometown communities.

The newly named school will be the first at the university named for a graduate of Tulane University’s Newcomb College where Weatherhead earned a bachelor’s degree in theatre in 1965. The Celia Scott Weatherhead School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine will join the A. B. Freeman School of Business as the only named entities among Tulane’s 10 schools and college.

Two Sterling College Theatre grads head to New York

“Start spreading the news, they’re leaving today…” That’s the song two 2024 Sterling College Theatre graduates Emily Jones and Rachel Thomson will be singing in September as they head to New York, New York, in pursuit of their dreams of “making it” in the theatre world.

Jones and Thomson wasted no time in jumping into their professional theatre careers with summer theatre positions. Jones was in Technical Theatre at the world-renowned Santa Fe Opera Company in Santa Fe, N.M., and Thomson as part of the resident performer ensemble at Crane River Theatre Company in Kearney, Neb.

Jones quickly became an integral part of the technical side of theatre at Sterling and worked on almost every show during her four years. Her primary focus was in lighting, sound, and set design but she also found herself onstage a couple times. She knew early on that her interest was in the technical theatre area. She had been immersed in theatre set, lights, and sound while at Sunrise Christian Academy in Wichita where her father Jack Jones was Tech Theatre Director.

Jones worked at four summer theatres during her time at Sterling College including Black Hills Playhouse in SD and at Lyric Theatre in Oklahoma City. But nothing compared to her experience at Santa Fe Opera (SFO) this summer. SFO produces five operas which are presented in repertory over one summer season – meaning they are produced in the same space multiple times a week. So, each show has to be torn down and a new show assembled in a matter of hours between performances.

“It’s kind of nuts the way Santa Fe works, but they have a very unique way of doing things because of the turn-around time,” Jones said. One of the most challenging tasks for Jones was “working the deck” in which she had to reset lights during intermission for the opera Der Rosenkavalier.

Jones found herself working alongside other theatre apprentices from schools like New York University, Carnegie Mellon, and Boston University.

“I admit to having a bit of ‘imposter syndrome’ at first,” Jones said. “But I was as eager to learn and worked as hard as the others and I think they saw that I could make a lot happen with a little. That’s what I have had to do.” Jones received the Jame Irven Staley Memorial Award for Outstanding Technical Theatre Apprentice from Santa Fe Opera as the company closed their summer season last week.

On the performance side of things, Rachel Thomson played two musical roles at Crane River Theatre this summer: Babette the feather duster in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and Cynthia Weil in Beautiful: the Carole King musical. She also served as Dance Captain in both shows.

Thomson has done extensive work in musicals not only during her Buhler High School years but also as part of the Sterling Community Theatre Troupe and Hutchinson’s Family Community Theatre.

Thomson said, “I have never worked with an actor as talented as Claire Flynn who played Carole King in the show. She was consistently pushing me to be a better performer. Everything she did seemed effortless and beautiful (no pun intended!) and it was so easy to play a role like Cynthia alongside her. Plus, Cynthia is such a copy and paste of my humor and personality! By the end of the show on the last night, we were shedding real tears to the song ‘You’ve Got a Friend!’”

This was Thomson’s second summer stock experience. Last summer she performed at the Paul Bunyan Playhouse in Bemidji, MN. “I think the beauty of summer stock theatre contracts is that you are working alongside lots of different people in different places in their lives,” Thomson said.

Three of Thomson’s fellow cast members this summer have “booked” national tours of musicals heading on the road this fall. “What’s so great about summer stock theatre, and Crane River Theatre specifically, is that no matter where you are in your journey, the people around you are going to be supportive and uplifting no matter what. It was a JOY to work with every single person that I shared the stage with,” Thomson said.

Thomson felt “well prepared” for her summer stock experiences due to her wealth of experience she received while at Sterling College where she was in a total of 12 shows over five semesters including 10 musicals of which she choreographed four and was assistant choreographer for the other six. She also credits her director/instructors: Sasha Hildebrand, Marisa Callan, Stephen English, and Dennis and Betsy Dutton.

Thomson and Jones plan to move to New York City later in September where they each have made contacts within the “business” already. Thomson said, “I can’t wait to be at in person auditions, get back into dance classes and voice lessons, and obviously to be IN NEW YORK!”

Jones has a one-day tech theatre job lined up thanks to a contact from Santa Fe Opera who also happens to work for Saturday Night Live. With his help, Jones has been contacting several off-Broadway theatres to get on their work lists. “It’s a matter of making connections, doing the work, and being reliable,” she said. She is excited, too, for the time of self-discovery to see what opportunities await her and how she can apply herself to creating a future in the business.

Thomson said, “It’s my favorite place in the world so I’m just blessed with the opportunity to be able to move my life there and with one of my best friends! Like the song says, ‘If you can make it there, you’ll make it anywhere!’”

“The Addams Family Musical” Cast Release

Fresh from comics, television, and movies, the classic, spooky clan known as the Addams Family is back, this time on stage. Sterling College Theatre will present “The Addams Family Musical” at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, September 26, 27, and 28, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, September 29 in the Culbertson Auditorium on the Sterling College campus.

The Addams Family Musical brings to life the beloved characters of Charles Addams with an unexpected turn – daughter Wednesday falls in love. When Wednesday invites her new love, Lucas, and his conventionally “normal” family to dinner at their home, the two families are taken on a bumpy ride while learning about the importance of honesty, trust, and fear of the unknown. The musical brings a thrilling mix of dark humor, romance, and unbeatable music numbers.

Through the enchanting score by Andrew Lippa and quirky characters, the story reminds audiences to take the time to know and listen to others. Even those most different can inspire us to grow in profound ways, reflecting Sterling’s values of Christ-centered humility and love for both neighbor and enemy.

The Sterling College production will feature Noah Svaty, junior, leading the cast as Gomez Addams with Aubrey Anderson, senior, as Morticia Addams. Both are from Sterling. Wednesday Addams will be played by Mary Little, junior, of Hutchinson and her love interest Lucas Beineke will be played by junior Caleb Brownlee, Sterling.

Mackenzy Carter, a sophomore from Wichita, will be playing Addams’ family son – Pugsley Addams, while freshman Harleigh Baker, Burlington, will be Grandma Addams. “Hypertopia” art exhibit opens

Exploring the realms of storytelling through branding, comics, motion, and toys is the art exhibition titled “Hypertopia” currently on display at the Sterling College Art Center Gallery. Created by Sterling College Art & Design faculty member Sean Engler, the theme for this exhibition is based on his love for good stories, the captivating visuals of science fiction (Sci-fi), and his childhood of broad imagination and fascination with Sci-fi creations.

Engler received his MFA this past May from Ft. Hays State University and presented his collection at the Moss-Thorns Gallery of Art in Hays, Kan., recently. He said, “Hypertopia, by definition means ‘beyond the lived physical places’…I chose these because all my life I have been creating narratives.”

Beyond the captivating visuals, “Hypertopia” holds themes of loyalty, justice, and friendship. “Good stories have meaning,” Engler said, “Behind all the bright colors, there are themes of speaking out for ones who won’t or can’t speak for themselves, protecting relationships between friends and family, speaking out against injustice, and doing the right thing when everyone else is too scared to.”

At the heart of the exhibition is “Submersion Tide Illustrated Novel Illustrations” which is a collection of nine digital illustrations from a novel that Engler is in the process of writing.  “This is my favorite piece because it’s my original idea for this collection of work,” said Engler. “Once the exhibition is torn down, the work continues.”

The main character of the nine digital illustrations is a tribute to Engler’s late best friend who passed away in 2020. “He had such an impact on my life. I’m using this to keep his memory alive and to honor the man that he was,” said Engler.

“Hypertopia” will be showing until November 1 on weekdays from 9 am to 5 p.m. at the Sterling College Art Center Gallery (306 West Washington, Sterling) and is open to the public free of charge. Engler encourages people from all backgrounds to come and view the exhibit, as he says it is meant to be viewed by all. There will be a reception and Artist Meet & Greet this Friday, September 20 from 4 to 6:30 p.m. in the Gallery.

Engler hopes that through “Hypertopia”, people will walk away with inspiration and joy for creativity. He said, “I hope people are inspired to be creative in their own unique way after they see my art,” he continued, “I also just want people to feel fulfilled because they received a good story. Stories bring joy and I hope my art does that for people.”

U.S. News publishes the Best Colleges rankings each year to provide prospective students and their families with the comparative merits of the undergraduate programs at America’s colleges and universities. The rankings offer detailed information of the institutions and data on factors such as outcome measures — including graduation rates, graduate indebtedness and post-graduate earnings.

“For 40 years, Best Colleges has continued to evolve as a trusted companion to prospective students and their families during the decision-making process,” said LaMont Jones, Ed.D., managing editor for Education at U.S. News. “The rankings and editorial content offer crucial data as well as college advice and informed reporting to all who seek a college education.”

“We hear so many comments from our incoming class about how excited they are about our small class sizes and the personal connection they make with professors, coaches and staff. They are ready for the next step in their education and Sterling College meets them and engages them in academics, athletics, activities and more,” said Mitzi Suhler, vice president for enrollment services.

Prospective students can see how Sterling College compares to other institutions and how the rankings are calculated in the U.S. News’ Best Colleges.

Sterling College Announces $100,000 Matching Challenge for Second Annual Giving Day

Sterling College is excited to celebrate its second annual Giving Day on November 1, 2024, coinciding with the College’s founding anniversary on November 1, 1887. This year, the College aims to build upon the success of its inaugural event by announcing a $100,000 matching challenge, made possible through the generosity of two lead donors. Every dollar donated will be matched up to $100,000, potentially doubling the impact to $200,000 for student scholarships.

All contributions during Giving Day will support the Sterling Fund, the College’s primary fund dedicated to providing essential student scholarships. As the cost of higher education continues to rise, these scholarships play a critical role in alleviating financial burdens and enabling students to pursue their academic and personal growth.

“On this 137th birthday of Sterling College, we are blessed with a tremendous opportunity to enhance the educational experiences of our students through this remarkable matching challenge, thanks to the generosity of two dedicated supporters of Sterling’s mission,” said David Earle, vice president for advancement and alumni relations.

The generosity of the two lead donors for the matching challenge was inspired by Sterling’s commitment to missional purity and biblical fidelity. Sterling’s mission is “to develop creative and thoughtful leaders who understand a maturing Christian faith.”

The Giving Day campaign highlights the transformative power of scholarships in a student’s journey at Sterling College. The Sterling Fund supports scholarships that allow students to focus on their studies and develop as leaders, without the financial strain that can often hinder academic success.

Sterling College invites all alumni, friends, and supporters to join in the celebration of this special day by making a gift, sharing the event with their communities, and proudly wearing Sterling apparel. Supporters are also encouraged to pray for the College, share the Sterling story with prospective students, and participate in the day’s festivities.
