How APU Is Enhancing the Remote Learning Experience for Students

With the shift to remote learning to help keep the Azusa Pacific University community healthy and safe, fall 2020 won’t look like any other time in the school’s history—including the spring’s emergency transition to remote instruction. Faculty and staff have been working hard all summer to ensure that students continue to have rich, rewarding opportunities to learn, connect, and grow. They’re ready—and excited—to reconnect with students.

“Our pivot to remote-hybrid learning for fall 2020 presents challenges and opportunities for us to face together,” said APU Provost Rukshan Fernando, PhD “In every college and school at APU, the faculty are engaged in deep work this summer to ensure a rich learner-centered environment for the upcoming semester. We are focused on providing our students with the life-changing educational experiences for which APU is known.”

Remote learning is not a new endeavor for the university, as APU has offered successful online degree programs for well over a decade. However, this fall, every course will be remote with significant investment in optimizing the online experience for classes normally taught face-to-face.

Here are the ways the university has been working to enhance the remote learning experience for students and ensure everyone feels productive, engaged, and supported.

APU is striving to recreate the best of the classroom environment, especially dynamic interactions between faculty and students. “Students will receive a wonderful learning experience this fall,” said Shawna L. Lafreniere, associate professor in the Department of Leadership and Organizational Psychology at APU. Lafreniere has extensive experience designing innovative teaching and learning experiences, which will be adapted to a remote-hybrid context.

Lafreniere has been equipping and assisting fellow faculty to reimagine their courses for the fall. “Students will experience Christ-centered academic excellence and meaningful engagement, with exciting pedagogical strategies to support learning,” she said.

The remote-hybrid experience combines remote and online teaching and learning. This means faculty will:

  • Live-stream synchronous classes, where students all participate online at the same time
  • Incorporate asynchronous components, which students complete outside of class

“This combination allows us to maximize the virtual face-to-face time that we have without Zoom fatigue,” Lafreniere said.

Being able to see and hear one another is critical in establishing a strong connection in remote classes, said Mike Truong, PhD, executive director and digital learning architect for the Office of Innovative Teaching and Technology (ITT), part of the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Assessment (CTLA) at APU. “Faculty can speak with emotions, talk in a conversational manner, and create a sense of closeness with students,” he said. “Students can also ask faculty questions in real time, promoting a better instructor-learner interaction.”

Other hallmarks of campus life at APU are also being reenvisioned to maximize community connections. This includes a fully virtual chapel experience. Students will have a 48-hour window to view the latest chapel at live.apu.edu, said Chris Kelly, director of media and events for IMT.

Designing Coursework for Remote-Hybrid Learning

Faculty at APU have been busy designing courses and adapting learning activities that are compelling and engaging in an online environment. A sample schedule in a fall 2020 class that meets three times a week might look like this:

  • Before the week starts, students read an article or chapter, or watch a video or micro-lecture.
  • On Monday, the class meets together on Zoom and the instructor gives a short lecture. Then, the students break into Zoom rooms, work together to solve a problem, and regroup to share their solutions. The instructor assigns another activity for them to complete before their Wednesday Zoom class.
  • Wednesday’s Zoom class might be a lecture or time to work on group projects, with another activity assigned for Friday.
  • Friday’s Zoom class could be individual presentations, with the next activity assigned for Monday.

Courses will all be different and adapted to the content of the class, but most will blend synchronous and asynchronous components. Each course’s structure will be outlined in its syllabus.

Investing in Technology to Support Remote Learning

Strategic investments to upgrade APU’s classroom technology—including ceiling-mounted HD cameras and specialized video conferencing soundbars—enable professors to safely go into their classrooms to use the new technology for live and recorded instruction. And ITT is supporting them so they can maximize Canvas, the virtual classroom, for all courses.

Faculty are working to make all course materials, quizzes, assignments, assessments, and activities accessible through Canvas. “This is good news for students because they are now afforded access—anytime, anywhere, and on any device—to learning in ways they may not have before,” Truong said.

Zoom and Google Meet are integrated into Canvas, as are online exam security and proctoring services like Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor.

ITT has been offering weekly webinars, on-demand resources, and individual/group consultations to support APU faculty in their transition to remote-hybrid teaching.

“As faculty, we always strive to create the optimal conditions for learning in our classes. It’s no different this fall, we just have a different space to adapt to,” Lafreniere said.

Preparing Students to Adapt in Their Careers

While students may be coping with the reality that their fall learning experience will be different than what they expected, Lafreniere points to some silver-lining benefits. “We know disruptors will happen in students’ careers,” she said. “Experiencing these challenges now has the potential to increase their capacity for resilience, adaptability, and innovation in the long term. We encourage students to embrace the value and opportunities that can come from these disruptors.”

Building a Strong Future

The changes taking place at APU and across higher education in response to the pandemic are likely to have a lasting—and largely positive—effect going forward. “Online learning and other forms of technology-enhanced learning are here to stay,” said Truong. “Institutions and faculty who are actively leveling up their knowledge, skills, and abilities to function in this new world will be the ones who will thrive.”

Practicing Mindfulness from a Christian Perspective

This year, 2020, has brought about a season of heightened stress and significant change for many people. Whether due to the risk of COVID-19 infection, the significant changes in the economy caused by the pandemic, or the growing social unrest, individuals across the country—and the globe—have been struggling to get a handle on their emotions.

In times like these, practicing mindfulness can help. Here’s what you need to know about Christ-centered mindfulness and how to introduce it into your daily life.

What Is Christ-Centered Mindfulness?

Regina Chow Trammel, a social work professor at Azusa Pacific University, defines mindfulness as the “awareness of the present moment, being still, and practicing meditation.” She calls it an antidote to the often hurried pace of life that has developed, particularly as technology has become more prevalent.

Although the practice originated with Buddhist religious philosophy and the habits of the eightfold path toward enlightenment, physician Jon Kabat-Zinn brought the ideas to the West in the 1970s. Many Christians have remained skeptical of mindfulness because of its Buddhist roots, but Trammel encourages Christians to reclaim it.

“The main difference between a secular or Buddhist mindfulness practice and a Christian one is that we know that we have a relationship with our Savior, who is active in our lives through the Scriptures; He hears us when we call Him and the Holy Spirit provides us insight into God’s heart and will for our lives,” Trammel said.

4 Tips for Practicing Christian Mindfulness

Trammel has a passion for helping students improve the lives of others and focuses her research on how mindfulness can reduce stress. Through this research, she has developed a number of tips that can help Christians relieve stress.

Keep Reading: 5 Tips for Managing Stress in College and Staying Healthy

Here are four steps toward incorporating the principles of mindfulness into your life:

  1. Sit still in the presence of God. The best part about Christian mindfulness is that you get an opportunity to hear God’s voice more clearly. Trammel encourages those looking to incorporate this into their spiritual lives to consider practicing mindfulness after devotional times or even after a good sermon. “When we sit at God’s feet and open up space in our bodies, our minds, our spirits, Christ will work,” she said. “As the Psalmist promises, ‘He searches us and knows us and will point out any wayward way within us.’ [Psalm 139] Decluttering our thoughts makes room for God to speak.”
  2. Don’t be a perfectionist about mindfulness. It’s easy, Trammel says, to think we’re not doing mindfulness right, particularly when we aren’t getting results at first. Our minds naturally think in terms of “gain versus loss.” But for mindfulness to be effective, we need to let go of our focus on results. Give yourself the space and the time to experiment as you grow more comfortable with practicing mindfulness.
  3. Lean into the rhythm of your work. Trammel also encourages incorporating mindfulness into your daily tasks if you are busy or find it challenging to sit still—and focusing on gratitude as you do so. For example, as you wash dishes, try to focus only on your task and thank God as you do. She recommends praying something similar to this passage: “God, thank you that I have the ability to do these tasks. As I am doing them, please meet me. I am grateful I can move and am able to do these tasks today.”
  4. Gather resources on the topic. Trammel points readers to a number of strong Christ-centered resources on mindfulness that can help people put it into practice. She pointed to Larry Warner’s Journey With Jesus, which emphasizes a practical application of Christian mindfulness. She also recommends Richard Foster’s book, Spiritual Classics, which provides spiritual formation exercises. Trammel is currently working on a book with John Trent called Wherever You Go, There God Is: A Counselor’s Guide to Christian Mindfulness, which is expected to be published in 2021 by Zondervan.

What Businesses Need in Leaders Today: Adaptability in the Workplace

Businesses everywhere are figuring out how to adapt and navigate in this complicated time. They’re exploring ways to keep their employees and customers safe during the pandemic, boost revenue streams in a struggling economy, and help their teams thrive.

In addition to developing skills specific to their career aspirations, today’s students must develop the traits needed for adaptability in the workplace so they can succeed as tomorrow’s employees and leaders. Being resilient matters more than ever! Here’s what students can do.

Prepare for a Changing Workplace

Rachel Bodell, DBA, assistant professor in Azusa Pacific University’s School of Business and Management, gives students this advice: “Focus on developing the type of skills which have been—and will always be—critically important to navigating change.”

She believes that developing a set of soft skills to complement industry-specific skills will be essential to preparing students to adapt in the workplace. And educational programs that value character development and experiential learning can help students grow those soft skills.

  • Empathy
  • A belief that your actions matter
  • The ability to manage ambiguity and uncertainty with integrity

“Soft skills are a set of matured personal qualities that lead to a level of emotional intelligence,” Bodell said. “They are the values and experiences which inform our worldview—the lens we use to take in the world, critically think, problem-solve, and engage with people.”

Experts have recognized the benefits of soft skills for more than 100 years. As cited in a Conover report, research conducted by Harvard University, the Carnegie Foundation, and Stanford Research Center in 1918 found that about 15% of job success comes from hard skills such as technical abilities and knowledge. That leaves soft skills as key contributors responsible for 85% of success.

What was true more than 100 years ago is still relevant today, even as technology allows for more jobs to become automated. In the Harvard Business Review, Stephen M. Kosslyn argues that soft skills remain the most difficult to codify into programming and continue to give people advantages over automated systems.

And soft skills are especially important now. Businesses don’t know what their workplaces and industries will look like going forward, so building a team of people who are adaptable and resilient will help them face their future challenges.

Understand How to Use Soft Skills

A foundation of soft skills is crucial to thriving in business. With it, you can:

  • Build a positive attitude
  • Communicate across different social situations
  • Resolve conflict
  • Engage professionally
  • Work well with a team

Move Beyond Buzzwords

Bodell explained that businesses that are focused on adaptability in the workplace will expect their future employees to provide clear examples of what motivates them. Buzzwords like “passion” or phrases like “I’m a people person” are not enough to communicate your soft skills to potential employers.

Keep Reading: Graduate Business Degrees: 3 Questions to Help You Decide Between an MBA and an MBM

Businesses need people who can understand and articulate their passion and motivation when they’re faced with adversity. “Business leaders are looking for people who are emotionally and socially intelligent,” Bodell said.

To underscore your passion, you’ll need to explain the values and experiences that shape and drive it.

As a “people person,” you’ll need to explain how you’ve learned to engage with people in a way that furnishes meaningful outcomes.

How a Master’s in Art Education Can Elevate Your Art and Teaching

Art education programs are essential for learners of all ages—even those who won’t go on to pursue careers in a creative field. Art provides students the ability to look deeper within themselves and better connect with their world.

For those who desire to foster these creative connections, a master’s in art education offers current and aspiring educators the knowledge to advance the power of creativity and art in their classrooms.

Learning to Be an Advocate for Art in Your School

There are many life-changing benefits of art education. For instance, students that receive art education typically have fewer disciplinary problems, better writing scores, more motivation for college, and deeper empathy for others. Art education has the ability to transform a school’s climate—but often, school boards can’t find the time, funds, or energy to devote to integrating successful art education programs.

This is why art advocates are so important.

Earning a master’s degree in art education won’t just equip you to teach art. You’ll learn how to be an advocate for art and students alike. Azusa Pacific University alumna Kaley Johnson, M.A. ’20, is just one graduate who was inspired to advocate for art education in schools. “When I think of advocacy, I think of how each and every class taught me of a different way art education takes place in the world, impacts the world, or is needed in society,” she said.

A fellow APU alumna, Kelsey Wengel, M.A. ’20, currently works as a visual arts teacher and district art lead at a California high school. She credits her professional growth to the university’s curriculum, noting that, “This last year, I found myself in the center of arts advocacy at my school district, making boardroom speeches, writing letters, hosting professional development, joining county commission meetings, and doing things that I never thought I’d be doing—and it was because of this program.”

Keep Reading: Craft a Career Path with a Master’s in Art Education

Bringing Joy to the Classroom

Wengel also shared that she works to ensure her classroom is a happy, inclusive space where students of all abilities are encouraged to participate. Art education acts as a level playing field for students because no one needs superior math or reading skills to participate and create. It’s also in the art room where many struggling students discover their strengths and gifts in life.

When art instruction is given to a group of students, each person will create something unique. This allows both the teacher and class to see that every student is special in their own way. They are more than a test score—they are, in essence, an ever-progressing work of art themselves.

Is a Master’s in Art Education for Teachers or Artists?

While APU’s Master’s in Art Education was originally designed for artists who want to teach, the program is also open to teachers who want to better understand and incorporate art education into their classrooms. You don’t need to hold an undergraduate art degree to enroll!

Meet the Faculty: Erin Weaver, M.A.

The 30-unit low-residency program allows students flexibility to take all online courses throughout the year while completing two, one-week summer intensive practicums at APU’s main campus in Azusa. APU alumna Ana Cervantes, M.A. ’20, was originally drawn to the program because it blended the low-residency format with a summer intensive. “Summer intensives were exactly what I needed to expand and feed my creative soul as an educator,” she said.

Another APU graduate, Megan Maher, M.A. ’20, explained, “I felt like a lot of the courses and themes were directly applicable to my teaching, and I am happy that I now have created so many more lessons and resources to use in my classroom.”

The Benefits of Faith Integration in College

As you decide which colleges to apply to, it’s natural to focus on the ways each school will help you grow academically and socially. You want to know whether you can get a job when you complete your studies and whether you’ll fit into the campus culture. But it’s also important to consider how a university approaches faith integration.

Your years as a college student are some of the most decisive times you’ll ever experience in your spiritual development. For many people, the most influential factor is how they make sense of their faith during college.

Why Faith Integration Matters

When weighing your college options, it’s critical that you look carefully at how a university incorporates faith, not just in chapels and discipleship groups, but in the classroom where academic learning takes place. Here are four reasons why this is so important to your personal, academic, and spiritual development.

  1. Integrating Christian commitments with what you are learning will bolster your faith. “The robust learning that happens in the college classroom will bolster your faith in God,” said Paul Kaak, Ph.D., the executive director of the Office of Faith Integration at Azusa Pacific University. In your academic studies, you’ll have the opportunity to explore how God’s truths play out in your field of interest, whether that is communication, the arts, or the physical sciences.
  2. Your convictions are solidified during your college years. One of the most significant parts of the college experience is that you are very likely to form lifelong convictions on a number of issues. In a school where faith is integrated into your education, your biblical and theological commitments help shape this process.

  1. Christian virtues are in demand in the workplace. Employers are looking for workers who consistently demonstrate virtues like honesty and diligence. Choosing a Christian university that’s serious about faith integration—such as APU—can help you develop these attributes by explicitly connecting professional expectations with Christian character.
  2. You’ll be prepared not just for a career, but for a calling. The term “vocation” comes from the Latin word meaning “to call.” Effective faith integration links work to calling. Graduates focused on calling are rooted in God’s greater plan, rather than how much money you make or how much fame you garner.

What Faith Integration Looks Like in Universities

Misconceptions abound about what effective faith integration looks like. It’s not primarily about whether a school requires chapel sessions, even though that is important too. And it doesn’t mean professors replace the content of their course with Bible verses or devotional readings.

Instead, it’s primarily about what happens in the classroom as faculty share insights into each subject that tie into the Christian faith.

Keep Reading: The Value of a Christian College Experience

This will look different within each discipline. In an article about academic faith integration at APU, Kaak wrote that the school’s nursing and sociology programs provide a good example to learn from. While all such students will come to better understand suffering in their studies, an institution committed to integrating faith will help them discover “a kind of compassion that goes deeper than pity,” he asserted.

How APU Integrates Faith

Faith integration is a key distinctive of Azusa Pacific University. The school has always been transparent about its God First approach to higher education. It impacts everything from the school’s commitment to diversity to how professors integrate faith with the curriculum.

“The intention is that each student, upon graduation, will have credible and useful faith-informed resources for life, work, and future study,” Kaak said. “During the college years, and beyond, APU students should develop greater confidence in God, his truth, and in his intentions for people and communities in the world he has entrusted to our care.”

Discover the Benefits of Online Programs

APU’s online program in TESOL has been offered for over a decade using an asynchronous remote learning approach that is well-suited to graduate students worldwide. During that time, the program hasn’t stopped growing and evolving to meet students’ needs, according to Tasha Bleistein, PhD, professor of TESOL. Bleistein currently directs APU’s online TESOL program and has been teaching since the first cohort of students.

In that time, Bleistein has discovered that her students thrive while learning in internet-based courses. In fact, she’s found that online students’ work typically demonstrates a thorough understanding of concepts and highly developed skills, evidence that distance is no barrier to learning.

“One of the benefits of studying in an online program is a deep understanding of what being a student online encompasses,” Bleistein noted. “The students are able to reflect on activities, resources, and interactions that were successful for them.” This way, they’re learning how to teach online with each class that they take, she explained.

Learn the Tools to Enhance Online Learning

Focusing on the ways technology and language education can join together ensures that online teaching works effectively—and has a far-reaching impact on students’ education. The course TESL 501: Language Teaching Through Technology illustrates that connection and explores the history, theory, challenges, and opportunities involved in remote teaching. Through these lessons, students develop the skills to be effective online teachers as they create their own websites, analyze and demonstrate different educational apps, and develop lessons that enhance learning with technology.

“Online students often reflect very deeply on content,” Bleistein said. “I believe this is because much of what might be a casual group conversation in a face-to-face class is written and graded in an online program. There is an accountability to comprehend and then move to analysis or creation of new ideas in an online class.”

Along with gaining technical skills, students are able to personalize their projects to match their interests and future goals. For example, individuals who are interested in teaching English online can develop lesson plans, courses, or programs geared toward online learners and build the skills needed to interact with remote learners.

Enjoy Flexibility in an Established TESOL Program

Whether you decide to teach English online in the U.S. or in another country, one of the unique features of APU’s TESOL program is the variety of format options available. Students can move between the three program modalities—on campus, online, and field-based—depending on what kind of educational experience best suits their situation.

With this added program flexibility, students can start their program online and then choose to join in-person or field-based classes when circumstances allow. This provides convenience and safety for those beginning the program amid the pandemic. For students who opt to study online, the degree program can be completed in one-and-a-half years.

“We have a number of students who start in one program and move to one of the other programs as their lives change,” explained Bleistein. “The flexibility offered helps to make it more possible for students to complete their degree, even when life takes an unexpected turn.”

Innovating in the Arts: How APU’s Online Art Degree and Theater Arts Programs Are Connecting Virtually

The pandemic has drastically changed many aspects of life, but creative instincts paired with modern technology have given rise to new ways of experiencing the arts. Indeed, the arts have largely continued to thrive throughout this season, helping people to connect, heal, and be inspired.

Likewise, for those hoping to work toward an online art degree, this can be a period of adaptation and reinvention.

“The pandemic has nudged the art world into innovative ways of connecting the art and the viewer,” noted William Catling, MFA, chair and professor in the Department of Art at Azusa Pacific University. Catling noted that virtual exhibitions and other online art forums have become much more prevalent in recent months.

For the first time ever, everyone with internet access is able to tour the Louvre, the Van Gogh Museum, and the Art Institute of Chicago on the same afternoon. The same is also true for patrons of theatrical and musical arts; opportunities to experience, produce, and share art in new ways continue to expand.

The Arts Are More Important Than Ever

Catling explained that art is—and has always been—an essential aspect of human culture. “Creative expressions both mirror our cultural contexts and seek to inform them with the truth as we know it,” he said. An artist doesn’t just create a beautiful piece of artwork; they synthesize their culture, influences, history, and beliefs into their work to touch and speak to viewers in a way that words can’t.

“Our God introduces himself in Genesis as The Creator,” Catling noted. “It is our privilege to reflect the creative nature of God in our work as artists and as teachers.”

Jill Brennan-Lincoln, M.A., chair and professor in APU’s Department of Theater Arts, shares a similar viewpoint for theatrical arts. She said that even in difficult times, stories bring people together.

“Stories help us live in the moment as well as examine the past and look to the future,” Brennan-Lincoln explained. “It does not matter if they are with new technology and trends, God created this communication for us to examine the human condition together.”

Online Art Degrees Are Adapting to New Times

Earning an online degree in the arts during the pandemic may look a little different from what you anticipated from art school. However, the programs in the arts typically offered face-to-face at APU have each been updated to maintain the integrity of the program while benefiting all students—now and in the future.

Additionally, APU has several established online art degree programs that have always been offered in remote-learning formats.

Keep Reading: How a Master’s in Art Education Can Elevate Your Art and Teaching

Remote learning allows both undergraduate art students and graduate art students to adapt and extend their artistic expertise.

“As artists and teachers, we are resilient and are finding creative ways to promote learning in the visual arts,” Catling said. “We are increasing our one-on-one virtual interactions, promoting strong mentorship for our students.” He also noted that APU’s art program is bringing industry professionals into the virtual classroom to deepen students’ connections with the professional art world.

Online Theater Degrees Feature Virtual Performances

Due to the pandemic, APU’s Theater Arts program was able to create one of the first BFA Online Industry Showcases in the country. Brennan-Lincoln explained that the school’s degrees are designed to remain current and relevant because adaptability is important for artists seeking a career in acting, directing, writing, or design.

“We are preparing for a season of productions that include virtual performances and theatrical performances using cutting-edge projections that will be available on video for demand,” noted Brennan-Lincoln. “Our classes continue to focus on laying the foundations of technique while diving into progressive approaches.”

Preparing You as an Artist for Any Kind of World

Visual and performance arts will always be essential. However, the way people enjoy the arts will continually evolve. APU’s online art degrees stress the importance of art history and technical foundations, while also preparing artists for new technology and forward-thinking career advancements. It’s this careful balance that helps prepare students to make their marks in the art world and grow as creatives.

Thriving in Graduate Degree Programs During a Pandemic

In the fall of 2020, Sophie Cook, MA ’22, could have chosen to put off her graduate school dreams until another time. A global pandemic had upended daily life. Graduate degree programs take time and energy that seemed in shorter supply.

But, as a designer, Cook recognized that while she was developing the technical skills she needed in her field, she wanted to strengthen her teamwork, collaboration, and skills as a leader. Pursuing a Master of Arts in Leadership at Azusa Pacific University was an ideal way to get that necessary training. She won’t let a pandemic get in the way.

“My mother, an immigrant from Colombia, always taught me the riches that education holds,” Cook said. “Although she grew up in deep poverty, she always knew that education was a means to improve her situation, ultimately paying her own way to complete her bachelor’s at Azusa Pacific University. She never let hardship deter her from getting wisdom or knowledge. She is an inspiration to me and one of the reasons I am starting grad school this fall.”

Starting or continuing in graduate degree programs during a pandemic requires adaptability, but it need not be overwhelming. In fact, this might be an ideal time to refresh your skills during a historic shift in the job market. In the spring, many companies had to adapt to remote work. And as the economy changes, industries are evolving and new roles are developing. Pursuing a graduate degree can help you develop the skills needed to succeed in a work-from-home environment—and it can help you seize new opportunities.

  1. Settle on a routine. You may be surprised at how grounding a solid routine can be. Try to settle issues like when and where you’ll study. Keep up habits like spiritual disciplines, church attendance, and exercise routines. You’ll likely be tempted to ditch these routines as plans shift around you, but resist that urge and stay consistent. The routines you can control will help you deal with the changes you can’t control.
  2. Learn to prioritize well. You’ll hear this early and often in graduate degree programs—even in normal circumstances. Juggling work, school, and family responsibilities means you’ll need to say no to certain requests that pull you from your priorities. Don’t feel guilty about this.“Prioritizing means realizing that the seemingly urgent things are not always the important things and that sometimes it really is OK to say no to some things that compete for our time and attention,” said Matt Browning, EdD director of graduate and professional student engagement at APU.
  3. Set clearly defined goals. When you are creating daily, weekly, and long-term goals for yourself, make sure they are clearly stated and, most importantly, attainable, says Heather Hoshiko, PsyD, assistant professor and director for the psychology programs at APU’s San Diego and Murrieta campuses. She advises that students apply the SMART concept from the field of industrial-organizational psychology, which states that goals should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound.“The reason that many individuals do not accomplish their projected goals is that they lack definition,” Hoshiko said. “By answering these questions realistically, success is more likely. If your goals are too difficult or too simple, you can adjust them as needed.”Hoshiko provided an example of setting a SMART thesis-writing goal in grad school:
    • Specific: I will work on the Results section of my thesis.
    • Measurable: I will spend a minimum of four hours weekly on this goal.
    • Achievable: I will spread the four hours over the course of the week.
    • Relevant: I need to finish this portion in order to move on to my Discussion section.
    • Time-Bound: I will do this over the span of one month and evaluate where my goal is.
  4. Find your anchor points. “A popular study conducted by Lally demonstrated that it takes 66 days to form a new habit,” said Hoshiko. “However, author and social scientist B.J. Fogg posits in his New York Times bestseller, Tiny Habits: The Small Changes That Change Everything, that it can be done in less than a week by the creation of an anchor.”An anchor is a cue—something you perform daily. By tying a new habit that relates to your graduate school study goals to one that you are already accustomed to, the new element also becomes routine.“If you are a morning coffee drinker, perhaps pair it with re-reading your notes from class the day before,” says Hoshiko, “especially since research on rehearsing notes shows that you can increase your memory by as much as 70 percent if you do so within 24 hours.”

How to Prepare for Hybrid Jobs

Due to shifts in the job market and ever-evolving technology, hybrid jobs are quickly becoming the new norm. Many companies are now looking for intelligent and creative employees who can productively work in multidisciplinary roles and use digital tools seamlessly.

Burning Glass Technologies, an analytics software company, conducted a survey in 2019 that found that high-paying jobs of the future are more complex. In referencing these roles, the organization coined the term “hybrid.” According to the report, “These new ‘hybrid jobs’ are not only growing fast and highly paid, but they also are immune to automation.”

Prepare Yourself Now for the Future of Hybrid Jobs

Rachel Bodell, DBA, assistant professor in the School of Business and Management at Azusa Pacific University, suggested that students focus on diversifying their skills due to the changing social and economic landscapes. They can do this by taking courses relevant to their degrees as well as exploring tangential subjects they’re interested in.

Specifically, Bodell recommended that you:

  • Take additional courses at your university. Many online classes allow you to do this flexibly. You can complete the work on your time, wherever suits you best.
  • Look at courses outside of your focus area. If your main degree is in business, consider taking courses in creative writing or strategic communication. In addition to expanding your knowledge base, branching out to other courses can help you make connections faster and see the bigger picture.
  • Embrace coding as a hard skill. In some fields, learning coding can be more beneficial, similar to learning a foreign language. This is a skill that more and more companies are looking for. You can strengthen your résumé by taking computer science courses.

  • Look for free educational courses. E-learning platforms like LinkedIn Learning Courses and Open Educational Resources (OERs) allow you to complement your academic studies with learning opportunities in other subjects. Bodell noted that “This can help an online business student to specialize in something like search engine optimization (SEO) and also demonstrate breadth in management courses.”

Identify Which Hybrid Job Is Right for You

While the idea of hybrid jobs is exciting, trying to master additional skills while earning a degree can seem overwhelming. Don’t panic! You don’t need to be an expert in everything.

Instead, Bodell recommends conducting an analysis of job postings that interest you. For each post, write down any required or preferred degrees, skills, and experience. With that list, you can see what interests you and pursue it.

Keep Reading: How to Find an Internship That Boosts Your Résumé

To discover which hybrid jobs are the best fit for you, you should aim to gain experience in the field. “Develop management skills by focusing on learning and experiential opportunities which allow you to develop collaborative skills where you have overlapping responsibilities and understanding across disciplines, departments, and teams,” said Bodell. This allows you to communicate your leadership and management practices based on your education and experience.

Online Business Degrees Prepare You to Lead in Any Workplace

Among the many skills required to be successful in your future career, being able to pivot is key. Job markets are constantly shifting and companies are now looking for highly skilled employees who are equal parts creative business managers and entrepreneurial data analysts. Business degrees offer that unique perspective because they mix foundational management knowledge with the fast-paced evolution of business.

Keep Reading: Graduate Business Degrees: 3 Questions to Help You Decide Between an MBA and an MBM

“Online business degrees typically offer students more instructor-to-student and student-to-student communication with the ability to personalize projects to areas of distinct interest,” Bodell noted. She also explained that students with online degrees have more experience with self-directed learning and are constantly seeking creativity, asking questions, and demonstrating a growth mindset in online communication.

“This leads to personal curiosity, and curiosity has been linked to motivation, emotional intelligence, productivity, and innovation—all of which offer specific advantages for future employees,” said Bodell.

Azusa Pacific University is prepared to help students shine as they grow into extraordinary and highly skilled individuals, equipping them for the rise in hybrid jobs.

Virtual Networking: 4 Tips for College Students and Recent Grads

In the working world, it’s all about who you know—or so the saying goes. This definitely has some merit, at least according to a recent Jobvite survey that found 37 percent of people discovered a job through their professional network.

Remote learning may have changed the way students currently live and operate. But virtual networking is still possible and can be just as effective for landing your first opportunity after college.

Here are four ways you can bolster your online network this school year.

1. Connect with Prospective Employers

When you are working to build your network virtually, you may wonder how to get started. Those with lots of contacts in their field or industry didn’t wait for something to come along—they took action, which led to the opportunities they received later.

Here’s a simple virtual networking strategy almost any student or recent graduate can use: commit to writing three individualized emails (don’t copy and paste) to prospective employers every weekday until you find your first lead or job.

The whole process should take you about 45 minutes each day, including research. And over the course of just one month, you’ll have sent more than 60 emails to different companies. That’s a great way to take proactive steps to build your career contacts.

Keep Reading: What Businesses Need in Leaders Today: Adaptability in the Workplace

2. Promote Yourself (the Right Way) on Social Media

It’s easy to think of platforms like Instagram and Facebook as separate from your professional life. The reality, though, is that many employers don’t exactly see it that way! It’s important to maintain an online presence—and crucial that your posts don’t undermine your personality or abilities.

According to a CareerBuilder study, researchers found that:

  • 70 percent of employers said they use social media to screen candidates before hiring
  • 69 percent of employers will type a candidate’s name into Google or other search engines before making a hiring decision
  • 57 percent of employers said they were less likely to interview a candidate that they couldn’t find online

These numbers convey an important truth about virtual networking: your social media accounts should convey you in a positive light. Review all your social accounts and make sure whatever comes up is promoting you, not hurting you, in the eyes of prospective employers.

3. Build and Optimize a Professional Profile on LinkedIn

Of all the social media platforms, LinkedIn is the most important for virtual networking. As a recent graduate or current college student about to enter the job market, it should also be one of your top priorities to create a professional page on this platform. This includes:

  • Filling out your profile completely
  • Connecting with teachers, friends, and peers to start growing your network
  • Using a professional profile picture
  • Having past employers endorse skills on your page

The benefit of doing this is that your page becomes like a virtual business card, which you can use to attract potential employers. It also allows LinkedIn’s algorithms to match you to jobs or companies that fit your work experience and skills, effectively streamlining the job hunt for you.

Rachel Bodell, DBA, assistant professor in Azusa Pacific University’s School of Business and Management, picked up several LinkedIn networking strategies from a Certified Professional LinkedIn Recruiter, which she shares with her students.

First, Bodell says, use 40 or more words in your headline and summary to organically increase search engine optimization.

“The headline should not be general but specific to your core message and skills,” she explains. “For example, ‘student’ or ‘business student’ is too general and does not offer the viewer value-added insight into who you are. Don’t give up the opportunity to specifically convey something unique about who you are in your headline. For example, try something more specific like, ‘MBA candidate, trained digital marketing intern, and aspiring consumer insights researcher.’”

And what makes for a professional photo that pairs well with your LinkedIn headline? “Think natural light, high resolution, limited filters, and suitable dress to fit the part,” says Bodell. “Professional headshots often focus the viewer on your eyes. Avoid distracting backgrounds, head tilts, and frowning.”

The effort to capture a quality photo is absolutely worth it. According to eye-tracking technology, a professional photo designed to communicate that you are knowledgeable, kind, and trustworthy may increase your LinkedIn views by as much as 14 percent, notes Bodell.

“LinkedIn is for connecting but it is also an informational resource for future employers to see consistency regarding your character and competence with what you present to them in other formats like emails, resumes, and interviews,” Bodell reminds job seekers.

4. Take Advantage of Alumni Resources

No doubt the internet is full of opportunities. Just don’t forget to maximize the institutional resources available to you as a remote learner! Many colleges and universities have growing alumni networks that current students and recent graduates can use to stay connected and find professional opportunities.

Azusa Pacific University’s Office of Alumni Engagement is specifically dedicated to helping students stay in the loop after graduation, and the Career Center helps alumni connect with businesses and organizations that are hiring for jobs and internships. APU alumni stay connected via monthly newsletters, get notified of alumni events, and can sign up for Handshake, an online forum for career networking with fellow graduates and employers.

Connecting with other APU alumni comes with an advantage: you share common ground with the contact or potential employer right away. You’re also connecting with someone who’s familiar with the Four Cornerstones at APU: Christ, Scholarship, Community, and Service.

Whichever approach you take, it really does come down to who you know (or meet along the way). By positioning yourself as a young professional and staying in control of your virtual networking options, you’ll give yourself the best chance of landing a great job right out of school.
