Little Caesars is coming to WSU Pullman in 2025

Little Caesars has partnered with Washington State University’s Dining Services to open a serving location in the Compton Union Building (CUB) food court in the spring. A grand opening date will be announced later as the space it will occupy may need renovations.

“We are very excited to bring a nationally recognized pizza brand to the food court and believe it will be very popular with our students,” said Karee Shaw, director of the CUB. “It will complement the other concepts we have in the food court and offer variety to the campus community.”

Core to the mission of Student Affairs, students helped select Little Caesars. The CUB Student Advisory Board weighed in on the selection of the new vendor and WSU students were involved in menu taste tests to help make the final decisions.

Plans to open a Little Caesars at WSU are part of an accelerated expansion of restaurants designed to meet the demand for flexible options and the growing preference for convenient dining. At WSU, the food concept will be managed by WSU Dining Services, which also runs Freshëns and Carlitas in the CUB.

“We are thrilled to bring Little Caesars to the Washington State University campus, offering students, faculty, and staff a convenient, affordable, and delicious meal option,” said Patrick Cunningham, vice president of U.S. Development at Little Caesars. “As we continue to expand our footprint across the country, it’s exciting to be part of the vibrant campus life at WSU and serve the Coug community with our iconic Hot-N-Ready® pizzas and exceptional guest service.”

Ken Roberts selected chair-elect of Faculty Senate

Ken Roberts, professor and chair of the Department of Translational Medicine & Physiology, has been appointed chair-elect of the Washington State University Faculty Senate.

An enduring belief in the value of faculty governance prompted Roberts to join Faculty Senate two years ago. He’s previously served in a number of administrative roles at WSU, including acting dean of the WSU College of Medicine, and said he wanted to give back to his alma mater in a new way.

“It can be hard to find time to contribute to the university in a role like this, but I felt like now was the perfect time to take on this responsibility and work with Faculty Senate to advise and advocate on behalf of faculty across the WSU system,” Roberts said.

Roberts earned a doctorate in biochemistry and biophysics from WSU in 1989 before completing his postdoctoral training in reproductive biology at Johns Hopkins University. He then traveled to the University of Minnesota, where he received tenure in 2004 and directed a first-year course for medical students shortly thereafter.

His interest in medical school education led him back to WSU in 2008 after learning about the work the university was pursuing as part of the WWAMI Medical Education Program. He and several colleagues worked with then-President Elson S. Floyd to study and develop plans to open a medical school in Spokane, which culminated in the college welcoming its inaugural class in 2017.

Roberts said he’s eager to serve as chair when the next president of WSU is expected to begin their tenure next year. He’ll spend the next 10 months serving as chair of Faculty Senate’s committee on committees as well as working with current Chair Tracy Klein and immediate past chair Eric Shelden.

Roberts replaces Charles Moore in the role of chair-elect this fall following Moore’s resignation.

McLarty named to CEREO leadership

Sasha McLarty, assistant professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, has been named as a co-director of WSU’s Center for Environmental Research, Education & Outreach (CEREO).

She will share leadership of the center with Julie Padowski, research associate professor in the School of the Environment, and replaces Jan Boll, who is stepping down.

CEREO supports interdisciplinary environmental scholarship and engagement. The CEREO network is comprised of over 450 faculty, staff, students, and community members across the WSU system and beyond. The center provides unique opportunities for training and grant development that support their network at every stage of the research process. They work with researchers from developing an initial idea to building a team, writing and administering the grant, and, ultimately, advancing research with a systems-thinking approach. It also aims to transfer technologies and information developed from research activities to agencies, organizations, and individuals in support of WSU’s land-grant mission.

In recent years, CEREO has supported research proposals that have been awarded more than $12 million in funding, bringing together faculty from across campus in areas such as regenerative agriculture, wildfire impacts, water management, and forest and wildlife resilience in the face of climate change. In 2021, a team supported by CEREO received a $3 million National Science Foundation Research Traineeship grant for community-engaged scholarship related to water quality around the Columbia River Basin. That program currently supports 18 graduate students.

McLarty conducts research on groundwater and large-scale hydrologic systems. In particular, she seeks to better understand how much water people have, use, and need and how available supplies are changing. Her research interests include water scarcity, the food-energy-water nexus, science for decision support, and water resources management. She has conducted research on the economic value of groundwater during drought and led citizen science campaigns to monitor groundwater in Northeast Brazil and the Columbia River Basin. She has discussed remote sensing of global water stress with congressional members and led capacity building workshops on water resources management in Central Asia.

McLarty holds a master’s and PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of California, Irvine, and a bachelor’s degree from Stanford University.

Disabled Student Center poised for growth after first year

Senior Trina McConnell is one of the many students who have benefited from the Disabled Student Center on the Washington State University Pullman campus during its first year of operation. She said it is a valuable space where students are connecting with others, finding and sharing resources, and socializing in a place they feel safe.

That is exactly what the working group under the direction of the vice chancellor for Student Affairs envisioned in 2023 when it came together to explore the feasibility of establishing the center. The center opened its doors in the Washington Building that summer and will officially celebrate its first anniversary from 3–5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17, exactly one year since holding its grand opening. The WSU community is invited to drop by the center in room 223, enjoy snacks, and visit with staff and students.

“I think the biggest accomplishment for the center so far has been that students, whether they have a visible or invisible disability, feel it is a place on campus where they can be themselves,” said Roberto Morales, associate director of student services at the Access Center. “We look forward to hearing ideas from others about where the center can grow from here.”

Forging partnerships across campus

The center is staffed by a part-time coordinator, an assistant student coordinator, and three Cougar Compass mentors. McConnell is serving as both the assistant student coordinator and a Compass Mentor. She said the space has been invaluable for providing a place where the mentors can meet with their mentees.

The center is also a place where students are engaging with faculty and staff. Morales said center staff have forged partnerships with departments such as the Academic Success and Career Center, Student Financial Aid, the Residence Life Social Justice Committee, and the Dean of Students Office care team, which have conducted workshops or held office hours in the center.

While there have been many successes, Morales and McConnell said more work lies ahead before the center realizes its full potential. Not only would staff like to see more students utilize the space but want allies to know they are welcome in the center too. McConnell said staff are still determining what kinds of programming students would like to see on a consistent basis and are continually working to gather student feedback. On her wish list for next year are more resources for outreach efforts, healthier snacks in the center, and front-desk staff.

McConnell said students may not be aware or fully appreciate that WSU is on the cutting edge when it comes to providing a center for disabled students, but she recognizes it is making a positive difference in her life.

“Some days I come into the center feeling rotten and socially anxious,” McConnell said. “After I’ve had a chance to interact with the students and staff there, I always leave in a much better mood.”

Professor Cousins’ active research program focuses on relationships between plant traits and photosynthetic efficiency across diverse species in both natural and managed environments. He is involved with an international consortium of researchers as part of a Gates Foundation sponsored project to supercharge photosynthesis in rice to help address the world’s growing food needs. An additional area of research, funded through the US Department of Energy and Agriculture, investigates enhancing photosynthesis and resource-use efficiency in key crops grown in marginal soils and under drought.

“As a leading researcher whose work holds global scale implications, Cousins’ role as director is of great service to SBS, his colleagues, and students. His foundation as a dedicated educator and collaborative researcher positions him to lead the next chapter for SBS,” said Courtney Meehan, College of Arts and Sciences interim dean.

Professor Cousins earned a BS in botany from California State University Chico and a PhD in plant biology from Arizona State University. Prior to WSU, he was a postdoc at the University of California Davis and an NSF International Postdoc Fellow at the Australian National University. He succeeds Patrick Carter, who served seven years as the SBS director.

“This facility will make projects possible that we simply can’t do now,” said Lee Kalcsits, endowed chair in Environmental Tree Fruit Physiology and Management. “It’s a leveraging opportunity: it opens a whole set of doors for impact on industry.”

With double the existing greenhouse space, modern lighting, and temperature and humidity controls, the Plant Growth Facility will allow for exclusion in experiments demanding isolation of environmental conditions, pests, or pathogens.

For WSU Pome Fruit Breeder Kate Evans, it would support expanded screening of breeding material for diseases including orchard-devastating fire blight, as well as room for broader research on new rootstocks.

“We do a good job of maximizing the facilities we have, but there’s a limit,” Evans said. “With the greenhouses, we’re way beyond it. The new growth facility will give our internationally renowned programs a way to expand into areas we’ve simply been stymied from entering.”

To complete the project, the research center team aims to raise $4.2 million in private funds. Contributions will directly support research and solutions tailored to the needs of Northwest tree fruit.

“The vision for the new plant growth facility is a place where the top researchers, teachers, and Extension personnel come together to address the on-the-ground problems of today and the emerging threats of tomorrow,” said Wendy Powers, Cashup Davis Family Endowed Dean of WSU’s College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences. “Located in the heart of tree fruit production for the world, this facility puts us out in front to ensure safe, abundant, healthy fruit for everyone.”

New master’s degree program aims for more environmentally friendly construction

Washington State University will soon begin offering a new online master’s program aimed at providing students with a foundational understanding of environmentally friendly construction practices.

The Master’s in Energy Conscious Construction program, launching this spring, will train students in the design of more efficient and less carbon polluting homes for the future. Washington state’s residential buildings account for 23% of the state’s energy consumption, and emissions from these buildings are the fastest growing source of greenhouse gases. The state of Washington’s Climate Commitment Act, which took effect last year, has set a cap on carbon pollution which applies to the state’s greenhouse gas emissions.

The master’s program will offer a series of 10 courses and online learning modules. Students will earn a total of 30 credits through the program, following either a one-year or two-year path. The program, housed in the School of Design and Construction and offered through WSU Global Campus, is for students as well as for working professionals.

“Washington’s residential buildings consume nearly 25% of all the state’s energy, and building-related emissions are the state’s fastest growing source of greenhouse gases. Washington state is committed to reducing the built environment’s impact on the natural environment through a progressive energy code and other initiatives such as the Climate Commitment Act and the Cap-and-Invest Program. The ECC programs cover competency gaps that prepare students for a future in alignment with the state and broader region initiatives,” said Omar Al-Hassawai, associate professor in the School of Design and Construction who developed the program.

The program recently earned a Department of Energy Zero Energy Design designation which recognizes the program’s commitment to sustainable design practices. Awarded by the DOE’s Building Technologies Office, the designation distinguishes programs that teach zero energy design best practices. WSU’s program was one of 14 educational institutions across the U.S. to receive the designation this year.

Interested applicants are encouraged to apply on the School of Design and Construction website or contact Al-Hassawi with questions.

WSU student from India gets first-hand experience of American football

Sneha Kataria was a bit overwhelmed at her first Cougar football game, but she had to pick up the rules quickly because she was on the clock.

Kataria, a first-year student in the sport management program, got her first job this fall manning the timeout and commercial break clock for media broadcasts at Washington State University Cougar football games. Associate Professor Tammy Crawford linked Kataria — who is originally from India — with the job at the beginning of the semester and guided her through the game field side as Crawford communicated with TV broadcast producers. Kataria signals the remaining time for commercials or timeouts via the “victory clock” which sits atop a heavy pole with large red numbers indicating the countdown to the end of each break. At a recent home game, Kataria slowly twirled the clock so all the various cameras and media personnel positioned around Martin Stadium could see the countdown to game stoppage.

Kataria said trying to grasp the game’s rules was intimidating, particularly since she had to pick it up on her first day on the job. She had never seen an American football game until her first day of work and gradually figured out how to manage her tasks and learn the rules.

“It’s a very indulging game, it’s really good,” she said. “When I go on the field, every time it’s interesting.”

Kataria is an athlete in her own right, practicing archery since she was in 7th grade. She competed across India in archery, but the crowds at those competitions were far different from American football stadiums.

“The only thing you hear is ‘last shot’ in archery,” she said. “Standing in the middle of the (football) stadium and hearing both sides is like a new and good experience.”

Working on the field offers Kataria a unique resume builder for a future career in the sports realm and a broader perspective of sports that are popular in other countries. A viewpoint she likely wouldn’t have gotten had she not chosen to attend WSU.

Crawford said sport management students are required by the curriculum to get practical experiences in athletics.

“She has been a fast learner,” Crawford said. “I think one of the more challenging things for Sneha will be the change in the weather. Working outside for a fall sporting event is something students are not always prepared for.”

Kataria said she chose WSU due to its sport management program and the overall athletics program. As an international student, she doesn’t have the luxury of traveling home with ease, so she is trying to prepare for the oncoming winter, another new experience. She’s provided a PAC-12 parka for when the snow hits, but so far, the fall games have been pleasant. Kataria said the most difficult part is strength training to hold up the 50-pound clock for a full game. She said she exercises regularly to maintain stamina to keep time. The hours in the gym, as on the field at her job, are time well spent.

WSU regents give insight on presidential search in new video series

Members of the Washington State University Board of Regents fulfill numerous roles for the university system.

They are advocates for WSU’s academic, research, and outreach mission.

They are emissaries of Cougar spirit, engaging with stakeholders ranging from students and lawmakers to passionate alumni and their families.

Perhaps most critically, they are the governing body over WSU’s vast operation, casting a critical eye on everything from building and degree proposals to the strategic priorities of the university.

In the midst of those efforts, regents are also undertaking one of the role’s most vital responsibilities: hiring the next president.

As part of a new video series, regents discuss the current efforts to welcome the university’s 12th president, as well as other topics, including their vision for WSU’s future. The series gives members of the public insight into the current regents, their personal and professional experiences, and what they see as the university’s greatest contributions to the state and region.

The five-part series addresses a number of topics:

Peer health education boosts training and support for student staff

The Health Education Program on the Washington State University Pullman campus is adding individualized training to its repertoire and strengthening support for student staff as the demand for its services continues to grow.

The Health Education Program features 20 student peer health educators (PHEs) who provide training and facilitate dialogue on health topics often deemed stigmatized but relevant to student lives — interpersonal violence, substance use, and mental health. The program also provides peer educators valuable skills development in critical thinking, interpersonal communications, public speaking, and applying theoretical frameworks.

Bekah MillerMacPhee, assistant director for Health Education, said while group training will be a mainstay, her staff recognized a need for individualized health education for students who may not feel comfortable participating in group training.

“We are investing in staff training, preparation, and securing space for one-to-one consultations,” MillerMacPhee said.

The program is also increasing wages for peer health educators who are entering their fourth semester in the program and planning to send the educators to a national conference where they can learn from others and share the work they are doing.

Strategic decision leads to new opportunities

The upgrades to the Peer Health Education Program are made possible by a recent $11,000 reallocation authorized by the Services and Activities (S&A) Fees Committee. The money was originally designated for Cougar Safe Rides, but after much deliberation, the decision was made to discontinue the program. Cougar Safe Rides, originally called Women’s Transit, had been operating on campus since 1978.

“As much as we loved Cougar Safe Rides and relished its long history on campus, we determined the program was not sustainable,” said Amy Sharp, director of the Women*s Center. “Also, data shows there is no correlation between sexual assaults on campus and being able to get a ride home at night.”

Another factor considered in the decision was the downward trend in ridership since the COVID-19 pandemic. The number of rides provided dropped from over 2,000 during the spring semester of 2019 to 400 during the 2023–24 academic year. Cougar Safe Rides gave its last ride in the spring of 2024.

Sharp asked the S&A Fees Committee to redirect the Cougar Safe Rides allocation to the Peer Health Education Program and the committee unanimously agreed.
