USTC achieves selective measurement of arbitrary quantum timing correlations for the first time

Peng Xinhua’s research group at the Key Laboratory of Microscopic Magnetic Resonance of the Chinese Academy of Sciences at the University of Science and Technology of China and Liu Renbao’s research group at the Chinese University of Hong Kong have made important progress in the high-precision measurement of timing correlations in open quantum many-body systems. Using quantum channels synthesized by controllable physical processes, they proposed a theoretical scheme for selectively measuring any type of timing correlations in open quantum many-body systems, and successfully detected fourth-order quantum timing correlations in nuclear spin systems for the first time. The relevant research results were published online on May 16, 2024 in the international academic journal Physical Review Letters under the title “Selective Detection of Dynamics-Complete Set of Correlations via Quantum Channels” [ Phys. Rev. Lett. 132 , 200802 (2024)].

The correlation between physical quantities is crucial for the understanding of many-body systems and for the development of quantum technologies. In order to comprehensively describe the dynamics of a physical system, all temporal correlation information in the system is required, that is, a dynamically complete set of temporal correlations. For quantum many-body systems, the non-commutability of physical quantities (operators) brings various complex inequivalent forms to quantum correlations. However, current measurement schemes can only extract a few special forms of timing correlation information, and so far there is no systematic and feasible scheme to extract all types of timing correlation information in a dynamically complete set. In 2019, Professor Liu Renbao of the Chinese University of Hong Kong proposed an arbitrary quantum timing correlation measurement scheme based on continuous weak measurements [ Phys. Rev. Lett. 123 , 050603 (2019)]. However, as the number of measurements increases with the continuous weak measurement method, the signal-to-noise ratio of high-order quantum correlation signals drops sharply, making its experimental implementation very difficult. Therefore, how to systematically and selectively measure dynamically complete arbitrary quantum timing correlations has always been a challenging scientific problem.

Figure: (a) The dynamic evolution of quantum many-body systems derives various forms of quantum timing correlations. (b) Quantum circuit for selective measurement of arbitrary N-order quantum timing correlation. (c) Experimental measurement of fourth-order quantum correlation. (d) Numerical simulation of quantum optimization control based on high-order quantum timing correlation.

In order to solve the above challenges, Peng Xinhua’s research group and Liu Renbao’s research group collaborated to innovatively propose any type of quantum timing correlation selective measurement protocol based on controllable physical process synthesis of quantum channels, see Figures (a) and (b). This protocol not only greatly improves the measurement signal-to-noise ratio of high-order quantum correlations and reduces the difficulty of experimental implementation, but is also applicable to a wider range of experimental systems, including single spin and ensemble quantum systems. Using high-precision quantum control of nuclear magnetic resonance, this work experimentally verified the feasibility of the measurement protocol on a multi-spin system, and successfully measured the fourth-order quantum timing correlation in a quantum multi-body system for the first time, as shown in Figure (c). Furthermore, this work applies the high-order quantum correlation information obtained experimentally to high-precision quantum optimization control tasks. The numerical simulation results shown in Figure (d) show that for single-spin quantum gates (such as Pauli-X gates), compared with previous optimization methods that only use second-order quantum correlation information, when the fourth-order quantum correlation is considered in the optimization control After correction, the quantum gate fidelity can be improved from 99.987% to 99.99996%.

This work has potential application value in the fields of quantum information and quantum many-body physics. On the one hand, the complete extraction of all quantum timing correlation information in the quantum thermal library provides a method to completely characterize quantum noise, which is very important for quantum information technology (such as quantum control and quantum precision measurement). On the other hand, since the dynamic behavior of a quantum many-body system can be decomposed into a superposition of various quantum timing correlations step by step, accurate measurement of any quantum timing correlation can help us better characterize and understand the non-linear behavior of quantum many-body systems. Equilibrium properties. Future directions plan to further improve the signal-to-noise ratio and spectral resolution of measuring quantum timing correlations by mitigating decoherence effects and utilizing quantum resources (such as entanglement and compression). The reviewer spoke highly of this work: ” It’s a significant addition to the field of quantum metrology, offering insights into quantum systems dynamics. ” ).

UWS has earned an international reputation for high-quality academic programs that prepare students to flourish in their professional endeavors. Student outcome data from 2019-2022 demonstrates that 92% of UWS Doctor of Chiropractic graduates attain licensure within six months of graduation, exceeding the 80% benchmark established by the Council on Chiropractic Education. The university sees similarly high rates of licensure (91%) for graduates of the Human Nutrition and Functional Medicine programs.

Located in Portland, Oregon, the university has cultivated a strong bond with its community, forming reliable partnerships with organizations, universities, and schools to provide whole-person health care for veterans, homeless persons, athletes, students, and the community at large. The university is committed to fostering collaborations that promote the health and well-being of Portland-area residents. From its inception, UWS has offered clinical care to community members through clinics staffed by university faculty and students. Today the UWS Connected Whole Health Clinic, serves more than 15,000 patients per year.

UWS’s more than 7,000 alumni include professionals positively impacting their local communities and individuals, from Olympic-level athletes to technical laborers. This powerful alumni network spans the globe and serves as a testament to the university’s influence and reputation.

In response to disruptive changes in the higher education landscape, in 2023 UWS joined The Community Solution Education System, a national nonprofit system of six universities working collaboratively to advance academic goals, improve infrastructure and support systems, and develop strategies for sustainable growth. The System’s culture of radical cooperation aligns with UWS core values, supports the advancement of interdisciplinary health education, and enhances learning experiences for students.

To celebrate its enduring legacy, UWS is hosting a festive gala at Sentinel Hotel in downtown Portland on September 28, 2024. Alumni, students, trustees, donors, business supporters, community leaders, and dignitaries will be invited to attend.

As University of Western States commemorates its 120th anniversary, the university community looks forward to preparing the next generation of whole-person health care professionals to serve the evolving needs of a diverse and dynamic world.

Still loving the outdoors in Colorado as she did while in Portland, Grace remembers learning at UWS from Dr. Ondick about the importance of having something to look forward to. For Grace that means a hike or a ski trip with friends. She continues to maintain work life balance with intentional practices. She says, “I have rituals.” For example, she suggested turning on and off a lamp with the start and end of the workday.  It creates a space and routine in the mind of “this stays here, and this is me being present.”

What made you choose UWS over other schools and/or how did your degree from UWS prepare you for your current role?

University location: I am an avid outdoors gal and wanted to live and study in the PNW.

Curriculum: I found that UWS has a very comprehensive DC program which teaches things outside of just basic manipulations (for example: minor surgery, obstetrics, and phlebotomy), which were not offered at all schools. I found having these additional courses made me a more well-rounded doctor and gave me more tools in my toolbox when evaluating patients.

Doing my preceptorship with Dr. Moreau at UWS was also a pinnacle experience which became a launching pad for my career. Being under his wing and guidance gave me the confidence to go into the “real world” and thrive. He would grill me and Derek (the other intern at the time) on the spot all throughout the day and treated us like we were already doctors. We were put under the pressure of coming up with proper diagnoses and timely patient care.

What joys and challenges have surprised you in your position?

Joys: the gratitude of the people we help through our profession. I am always energized by how much of a difference people can feel when we give them our full attention and care for them as individuals.

Challenge: learning how to run a business! We learn some tips and tricks in school, but when you are out there in the real world, there is so much to learn about being a manager, working with other employees (staff/therapists/assistants), etc.

At UWS, she is eager to further cultivate her skillsets in pedagogy, course development and the integration of technology into both education and health care. She is happy to be a part of this wonderful community.

What made you to decide to come to UWS?
I felt drawn by the new NMD program, and being in the world of natural medicine and part of starting a new program is very exciting. The community here is welcoming and fun. It feels like a good fit!

What excites you most about the school’s future?
Of course the development and launch of the new NMD program, but also the things we are doing to advance educational standards and pedagogy. I have felt impressed by the passion and innovation I see in other faculty members, as well as the investment from the school in developing new learning tools and methods to help students.

Where does your passion for teaching stem from?
I have felt inspired by my own educational journey; not just my successes, but more specifically the difficulties I faced at times when learning new things as a student and in my own career. Those are the places that allow me to spot potential challenges and stumbling blocks commonly experienced by students, and that inspire me to find ways of delivering information that will feel accessible to everyone in the room.

Why do you think the role of naturopathic medicine is so important in integrative health care?
With ND care, the individualization of the approach is very pronounced. A significant component of healing may happen as a result of feeling “seen”, when someone’s whole health picture is viewed in an integrated way. As a patient, to feel able to share personal experiences and be met with respect, acknowledgement, curiosity and understanding can feel invaluable when struggling with health issues.

What is your favorite thing to do in Portland?
One of my favorite things about Portland is its proximity to beautiful outdoor areas where I love to go hiking.  It is also just a beautiful, aesthetically pleasing city with a lot of paths and parks and great places in which to walk around.
