MedWise, OSU-CHS partner to enhance PA education and training

MedWise Urgent Care announced a strategic partnership with the OSU Center for Health Sciences aimed at enriching the education and training opportunities for physician assistant students.

Through this collaboration, MedWise will serve as a clinical rotation site for PA students at its urgent care facilities, offering invaluable hands-on experience under the guidance of seasoned professionals.

MedWise has also made a donation to support the OSU-CHS program through a contribution to the OSU Foundation.

The inaugural PA class at OSU-CHS, comprised of 21 graduates, completed its studies in October. More than 80% of these graduates are practicing in Oklahoma.

“MedWise relies on a competent team of physician assistants to manage their clinics and it provides an excellent training site for OSU PA students to acquire knowledge and skills from MedWise PAs who manage care plans for their patients. We are excited about the opportunity this partnership provides for our students,” said Amy Harrison, PA-C, and director of the OSU-CHS Physician Assistant program.

Dr. Dennis Blackstad, president of MedWise, and an OSU-CHS alumnus, highlighted the significance of the partnership in fostering hands-on learning experiences for PA students.

“As a proud OSU-CHS alum, I am thrilled that we can provide this opportunity for PA students to have hands-on learning experiences in our world-class facilities,” Blackstad said. “These students will have the unique opportunity to learn from the very best in their classrooms at OSU and in our MedWise Urgent Care centers.”

Ali Thurman, a recent graduate of the OSU-CHS PA program, grew up in a small community in northwest Oklahoma. She was inspired to follow this career path after seeing a PA practicing in a nearby rural community hospital. Thurman completed the last month of her rotations at a MedWise clinic in Sand Springs.

“I appreciate the opportunity that MedWise provided me,” Thurman said. “I enjoyed the variety of clinical presentations that I saw during my time there, as well as learning to assess and treat patients quickly.”

Thurman said that the MedWise model of quick and efficient care was a challenge but provided a well-rounded experience.

In addition to educational experiences, the partnership creates a pathway for OSU-CHS PA graduates to explore employment opportunities in underserved urban health care settings, addressing critical gaps in patient care.

Dr. Michael Steele, executive physician at MedWise, emphasized the organization’s commitment to hiring OSU graduates and leveraging the partnership to attract top talent.

“MedWise has been proud to hire many OSU grads into our ranks, including myself. As we continue to expand our footprint, I’m excited to see this partnership help us recruit and retain top OSU talent,” Steele said.

MedWise currently operates 14 urgent care clinics in the Tulsa area with two additional clinics expected to open in 2024.

Geology’s Vilcáez selected as 2024-25 U.S. Fulbright Scholar

Dr. Javier Vilcáez, an associate professor in Oklahoma State University’s Boone Pickens School of Geology, has been selected as a 2024 U.S. Fulbright Scholar.

With the award, Vilcáez will research lithium recovery from brines of Bolivia’s Uyuni Salt Flat and teach two courses — environmental data analytics and environmental mining of energy and mineral resources — at Universidad Privada Boliviana in Cochabamba, Bolivia.

“The Uyuni Salt Flat is the largest lithium brine deposit in the world,” Vilcáez said. “I hope sharing my research experience on the Water-Energy-CO2 Nexus as a Fulbright scholar with researchers and students in Bolivia will contribute toward Bolivia’s net-zero emissions energy transition. Bolivia is full of energy and mineral resources that could be developed using environmentally friendly technologies like the ones I research.”

Vilcáez said that the Fulbright program provides the perfect opportunity for U.S. scholars to start new research collaborations to solve global challenges.

“My interest sparked from the promising results we have obtained on the feasibility of recovering critical metals including lithium from brines using a new technology that I’m researching with my students at OSU, as well as from a recent visit I made to Bolivia where there is remarkable interest in developing lithium resources from Uyuni’s salt flat,” Vilcáez said. “The supply of lithium is paramount for energy transition across the globe. Therefore, I decided this was a unique opportunity to expand my frontiers in research and teaching in the field of energy transition.”

Dr. Camelia Knapp, CAS associate dean for research, echoed the importance of Vilcáez’s work.

“Lithium is a critical mineral for the global energy transition,” Knapp said. “Therefore, Dr. Javier Vilcáez’s selection as a U.S. Fulbright Scholar for Bolivia — where the largest lithium brine deposit in the world is located — will advance CAS within the global research landscape of energy transition.

“His research on mining of critical minerals from brines will open new avenues to other research he and other faculty members at the Boone Pickens School of Geology are conducting on energy transition.”

Beyond lithium research, Vilcáez studies other energy transition-related topics such as geological hydrogen and carbon storage, hydrogen production, and petroleum produced water treatment and disposal.

“Establishing collaborations with researchers to recover lithium from the largest lithium brine deposit in the world will strengthen the impact of those research projects too,” Vilcáez said. “Lithium is a critical metal for the global push for decarbonization, which my other research projects aim to solve. Moreover, I hope my involvement as a Fulbright scholar will expand the scope of my teaching activities and increase the research opportunities for students interested in following a career in the energy transition.”

Karibo selected as 2024-25 Fulbright US Scholar for Canada

Dr. Holly Karibo, an associate professor and director of graduate studies in Oklahoma State University’s Department of History, has been selected as a 2024-25 Fulbright Canada Research Chair in Comparative Canada-U.S. Studies.

Karibo will research borderlands history for four months at Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario.

“I’m excited to begin primary archival research on a new research project titled, ‘Ladies Liquor in the National Line Gendering Prohibition in the Great Lakes Borderlands,’” Karibo said. “I’m trying to uncover some of the histories of female smugglers and people that were involved in bootlegging and cross-border illegal trades in the 1920s and 1930s, but whose stories have not yet been told.”

She will be looking at the states and provinces that meet around the U.S.-Canada border, like Michigan, New York, Ontario and Quebec, as well as indigenous communities that also straddle that national line.

Karibo and Dr. Javier Vilcáez from the College of Arts and Sciences, along with Dr. Norb Delatte from the College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology, have been named 2024-25 Fulbright Scholars from OSU.

The idea for this project sprouted when Karibo came across several 1920s news articles about how many women acted as smugglers and evaded arrest by using gender stereotypes of them as the ‘fairer sex’ to evade customs agents.

She is interested in learning about the experiences of a diverse range of women who became involved in the illegal trade on each side of the national line. She will also examine how the policing of women during Prohibition reshaped the U.S. and Canadian legal systems in important ways.

“For my own research, this is an amazing chance to dig into some archives and historical collections I haven’t used in the past,” Karibo said. “But it’s also an important opportunity to build connections with students and faculty at Ontario universities, and I hope to sustain those connections beyond my time as a Fulbright scholar.”

Karibo studied in Canada at the University of Toronto, earning her Ph.D. (2012) and M.A. (2007) there, and the University of Guelph, where she earned her bachelor’s degree (2006) in history and women’s studies. This Fulbright experience is an opportunity for her to go back to Canada for both archival research and teaching.

At OSU, Karibo conducts transdisciplinary research by combining her degrees in history and women and gender studies. She teaches the U.S. survey courses, as well as classes on gender in America, the history of North American borderlands, power and protest in U.S. history, U.S. cultural history post-1865 and more.

Karibo is also set to publish a new book with University of Texas Press in November that continues to dive into her research on illegal economies, titled “Rehab on the Range: A History of Addiction and Incarceration in the American West.”

“There were only two federally funded drug treatment centers in all of the United States between the 1930s and 1970s. One was in Lexington, Kentucky, but the other one that treated people west of the Mississippi was in Fort Worth, Texas,” Karibo said. “So, I use that institution to look at how the history of medical treatment and the rise of incarceration and war on drugs gets fused at these federal institutions, which took voluntary patients, but also prisoner patients.”

Fulbright Scholar Awards are prestigious and competitive fellowships that provide unique opportunities for scholars to teach and conduct research abroad. Fulbright scholars also play a critical role in U.S. public diplomacy, establishing long-term relationships between people and nations.

“The Fulbright Program wants you to build connections in the long term between institutions,” Karibo said. “My particular fellowship does include teaching one seminar, like a small seminar on my research and area of expertise, so I’m teaching on illegal economies in the U.S., Canada, U.S. Mexico border, doing some comparative history there. Then, you give a public lecture, you engage with other classes that invite you. It’s a way to reach out and get to know both faculty and students through the process.”

“I’m super excited to be going into the college finals as a freshman,” McLemore said. “I know it’s going to be a great experience, and I’m hoping one of us finishes with a national title.”

She said the OSU Rodeo Team has had a positive impact on her life.

“This program has helped me grow as an athlete and a person, and gave me a strong support system,” McLemore said. “I’m looking forward to sharing this experience with my team.”

This year marks the fourth CNFR appearance for Lexie Russell, who will compete in breakaway roping. She is confident in her abilities to compete in Casper and represent OSU Rodeo one final time.

“This year has been all about fun as it is my last one in the black and orange vest,” Russell said. “I’m counting on making four runs in an environment where I have competed before and am comfortable in.”

Russell credits her fourth CNFR qualification to her coaches and teammates and is thankful for a team with a history of excellence.

“I couldn’t have made it without the support from my superstar teammates, like Lariat Larner, Kenna McNeil and Cheyenne Bartling,” Russell said.

Cody Hollingsworth has led the OSU Rodeo Team for 12 years, coaching many athletes to the CNFR.

“Our CNFR qualifiers stepped up this year when there were opportunities to capitalize on their abilities,” he said. “They all rope aggressively and are consistent, and I think that’s exactly what you need to be in that arena.”

The OSU Rodeo Team is part of the university’s Ferguson College of Agriculture. The team has been a member of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association since 1948 and competes in the Central Plains Region. For more information, visit rodeo.okstate.edu.

OSU Student Farm doubles acreage to serve Oklahoma food banks

The Oklahoma State University Student Farm is in its second year of operation and has harvested over 7,000 pounds of cool-season crops in 2024.

The idea was sparked by First Cowboy Darren Shrum, husband of OSU President Kayse Shrum, and is facilitated by the OSU Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture.

Department head Justin Quetone Moss leads the project and secured a partnership with Rachael Condley, director of Stillwater’s Our Daily Bread Food and Resource Center, to deliver fruits and vegetables to the food center and serve Payne County residents. Fresh produce is also supplied to Pete’s Pantry, the food bank located on campus.

Co-managers Matt Beartrack and Lynda Carrier work alongside a small group of OSU Extension assistants and student employees to harvest a variety of cool- and warm-season crops. Located on the west side of campus on Highway 51 in Stillwater, the site’s initial 2 1/2 acres produced more than 54,000 pounds of food for residents in 2023. This spring, the team doubled its planted acreage with seasonal favorites featuring cabbage, Swiss chard, broccoli, cauliflower, squash, sweet corn, spinach, potatoes and onions. New additions this year include sweet potatoes and Irish potatoes.

The OSU Student Farm is a hands-on living classroom for employees and volunteers involved in all aspects of vegetable production from planting, irrigating and fence building to weeding and harvesting. Beartrack said the team has improved the logistics of its daily deliveries to Our Daily Bread Food and Resource Center in Stillwater.

“This year, we’re more streamlined and communicating better about how much space we have for cold storage and what can be delivered,” he said.

The farm appreciates the generosity of P&K Equipment for donating the lease of two John Deere tractors. Great Plains Kubota also has provided the use of a Kubota tractor.

Installation of a post-harvest wash station is expected by August to prepare fruits and vegetables for distribution to food banks in Oklahoma’s metropolitan areas. This new feature is made possible through a partnership with the OSU Innovation Foundation and support from OSU’s Human Performance and Nutrition Research Institute.

As the original site of the OSU Swine Research and Education Center, the land, swine barn and caretaker’s house sat vacant for over a decade before OSU began transforming the space. The house now serves as the farm’s headquarters and has undergone minor renovations, such as painting, cleaning and repairs on the home’s water and central heat and air systems.

Beartrack said additional expansion with an organic focus is planned for later this fall; an OSU doctorate student will oversee the production of an acre of certified natural-grown produce.

“We’re about to plant summer crops on it and finish the fence,” he said. “The irrigation is in, the pipe poles are set and we’ll be ready to grow strawberries on it this fall.”

Even the most experienced gardeners face challenges with growing vegetables, and the Student Farm is no exception. Despite the team’s attempt to rotate the planting location of its cool and warm season crops, squash bugs and other common insects keep the gardening crew on alert. Although some of the produce is smaller this year compared to 2023, abundant rainfall has required less irrigation, and the farm’s crop is thriving.

“The quality of the produce — like our cauliflower, cabbage and broccoli — is awesome this year, and we’ve received a lot of positive feedback from the public on watching the season’s progress as they drive by the farm,” Carrier said.

Employees honored at 2024 Staff Celebration Day

Around 1,200 Oklahoma State University staff members were treated to a day of fun and appreciation at the Wes Watkins Center on Tuesday.

The annual Staff Celebration Day, hosted by the Staff Advisory Council, is a chance for the university to recognize its staff’s dedication and hard work.

Shaun Noll, manager of Meeting and Conference Services, donated the Wes Watkins Center after the original space, Boone Pickens Stadium, began construction.

“We’re just super thankful for everything the staff does,” Noll said. “This is what we do with meeting and conference services here at the Wes Watkins Center. We just try to find a way to make it the most efficient for the staff to come out and have a great time.”

The event featured a free Cajun-style lunch catered by Celebrations, vendor booths, games and music. Michelle Munson, SAC event chair, highlighted the importance of Staff Celebration Day.

“The goal of Staff Celebration Day is just to show how much we appreciate the staff,” Munson said. “We had over 85 donations from local businesses and vendors that wanted to tell the staff how much they appreciate them, not just what they do for OSU, but the Stillwater community.” ‘

Kristi Wheeler, marketing and communications manager in the College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology, echoed that sentiment.

“Oklahoma State University appreciates the staff of OSU,” said Wheeler, SAC council member. “And this is just a way to show our gratitude and appreciation for them. We couldn’t do it without the staff.”

For many staff members, Staff Celebration Day is a cherished tradition.

“Everyone in the office looks forward to Staff Celebration Day,” said Bonnie Cain-Wood, manager of Library Communication Services. “Everyone was looking forward to it. It’s one of our summer traditions.”
