Staying Up-to-Date with New Opportunities

APU regularly adds new ways to get connected on campus. Here’s how Oh suggests staying up-to-date with these offerings:

  • Be curious. Oh says that while APU will help you get connected, students should take initiative in seeking out exciting opportunities. “I would just really encourage each returning student to be curious about campus,” Oh said. “Explore the campus, meet some new friends, learn about activities and resources. Certainly, we’ll help, but I’d encourage them to think about it as an opportunity to take the initiative, as well.”
  • Check your email. The Office of Campus Life will frequently send emails with information about ways to get involved on campus. Oh recommends checking your email frequently so you don’t miss these opportunities.
  • Look to student leaders. Identifying the student leaders in specific spheres can help because they’re an excellent resource for ways to engage on campus. “Not only do the faculty and staff care about you, but student who have been at APU prior to your arrival have a deep commitment to your well-being and to supporting you as you adjust to campus,” Oh said.

Why Research Opportunities in College Create a Strong Overall Experience

Today’s job market and graduate schools are increasingly competitive. As you look to pursue the next stage in your journey toward your intended career with a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree, you’ll want to take advantage of every competitive advantage you can.

Research opportunities in college can be a great benefit, no matter what’s ahead in your career pursuits. Here’s what to know about these opportunities and how to make the most of them.

Why Research Connects Students to Faculty Mentorship

Evelyn Allen, MS ’19, called her research experience one of the highlights of her master’s degree program at Azusa Pacific University. As she pursued a Master of Science in Research Psychology and Data Analysis at APU, she worked on an original research project as part of her thesis.

The program is designed so students obtain in-depth research experience with support from a faculty mentor. “We prioritize a one-on-one pairing of graduate students and faculty members because every student comes in with their own interests, goals, and backgrounds,” said Julianne Edwards, PhD, program director.

“Faculty are able to individualize their mentoring to assist the student, so they not only complete their project but also learn new methods and statistics along the way,” Edwards said. “At the same time, the faculty mentor helps students create a plan for their future and prepare for either applying to PhD programs or getting a job in their field.”

During this process, Allen’s faculty advisor, Brian Collisson, PhD, helped her narrow her areas of focus and pursue a unique research angle.

“We started by simply talking about what interested me and what I was most curious to explore, and from there we designed and executed an experiment to study the effectiveness of role models in college marketing materials,” Allen said. “That study became the focus of my master’s thesis.”

Why Research Opportunities in College Matter

Collisson notes that engaging in research is a fantastic way for students to gain and apply skills valued by many graduate programs and future employers, such as critical thinking, creativity, statistical analysis, and communication.

Allen also pointed to a number of benefits of her research opportunities in college. First, she was able to publish her study in the Journal of Marketing for Higher Education. “I’m really proud of that accomplishment and the support I got in my program and from my mentor, which enabled me to contribute to the body of research in my field,” she said.

Allen then presented her research at a psychology conference and at an annual conference hosted by APU. She noted that she also loved engaging in the classroom with fellow students who were researching diverse topics, ranging from clinical psychology to medical interventions to human resources management in organizations.

“Those perspectives were valuable and energized my own thinking about how to apply research to study problems, investigate trends, and find evidence-based solutions,” Allen said.

Why APU Is a Great Fit for Research-Minded Students

Whether you’re an undergraduate student or a graduate student, APU provides a variety of opportunities to participate in research.

In fact, APU has been recognized for its efforts in supporting research-minded students. The Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education classified APU with the prestigious R2 designation. Carnegie, the most influential rating organization among colleges and universities, rates universities on an R1 to R3 system.

To qualify for R1 or R2 classifications, colleges need to award at least 20 research/scholarship doctoral degrees and have at least $5 million in total research expenditures. Although R1 universities have the highest level of research activity, their faculty members are often so heavily focused on research that they typically depend on graduate assistants to teach classes. R2 universities, like APU, have faculty who are deeply involved in research yet are still able to teach their own courses and involve students in their research projects.

“Collaborating with students is one of the best components of my job,” said Collisson. “As a social psychologist, I love working closely with students to design studies that address timely and meaningful issues about relationships. Without fail, my student collaborators always bring a creative and unique perspective to psychology’s unanswered questions.”

Keep Reading: Why You Should Consider Attending a Research University

At APU, faculty in every discipline are engaged in research, and they frequently invite undergraduate and graduate students to take part in that research. “When faculty engage students on their research teams, it gives us an opportunity to build even deeper relationships with our students at the undergraduate or graduate level,” said Edwards. “Seeing students thrive and grow from their research experiences is a very meaningful part of our role.”

It’s common for APU students to be part of a collaborative research team and be included as an author on a published study. This can be a distinguishing factor for students who are headed to graduate school or entering a competitive career field.

Undeclared Majors: 5 Tips for Choosing Your Path If You’re Undecided

When the time comes to register for next semester’s courses, working with your academic advisor can help you narrow down the seemingly endless list of options. But how do you decide which courses to take if you’re one of many students with undeclared majors?

Although it’s helpful to know your major from the start, it’s okay to be unsure—especially as a freshman. Instead of feeling anxious and rushing to make a choice, you can use this time to explore what interests you and find your calling.

Here are five tips for picking classes until you decide on a major.

1. Understand Your Academic Standing

When first registering for classes, look first to see if you’ve already earned college credit. Azusa Pacific University recognizes students’ achievements with college credit for AP and IB exam scores, allowing them to waive some courses and prerequisites.

By knowing which courses you’ve already earned credit for, you can get a head start on completing other general education requirements such as math, English, and science courses. You can take these classes during your freshman year as you learn what direction you’re most interested in pursuing. Then, you can focus on fulfilling your major’s specific requirements in subsequent years.

2. Try Classes in Different Majors

Now is a great opportunity to try out the classes that catch your interests. Specialized courses across different majors can spark your curiosity and give you experience in the major before making a final decision. Plus, almost all majors offer courses that meet general education requirements—so you can explore potential majors while staying on track to graduate.

At the same time, it’s not prudent to sign up for extra courses in areas you aren’t interested in. Instead of exploring every major, even those that don’t interest you, it’s better to fill your course load with subjects that do.

3. Reach Out to Mentors

As you get to know professors and fellow students in the courses and majors that interest you, don’t hesitate to reach out to them for a chat about their experiences in their fields. This can help you find out what drew them to that major or field and see how that aligns with your own interests.

Professors can help you understand what requirements you’ll need to graduate and pursue career opportunities, and older students can share their internship and career experiences. The campus community offers a great deal of support, so don’t hesitate to ask questions.

4. Get Outside Experience

In addition to gaining valuable insight through classes and conversations, getting involved outside of class can help you find your true calling. You can discover more about post-graduate careers by volunteering, working a part-time job or internship, or participating in professional student organizations. These opportunities can help expose you to what you can expect after graduating with different majors.

5. Discover Where to Apply Your Strengths

Like many students with undeclared majors, you may not know what to major in thanks to the endless number of career options available after graduation. It can be challenging when there are so many interests and choices available—some of which you might not even know about.

If you’re still discovering your talents and determining where they might best fit, APU can help you find your strengths. The school’s Exploring Program is designed especially for students with undeclared majors to help with mentoring, strength discovery, and major and career exploration. Through the experience, students are able to find the path that best works for them and their future goals.

It’s absolutely possible to start college without a major and still graduate with a degree. Reach out to the Academic Success Center for guidance in choosing one of 60+ majors at APU as well as for continued support throughout your time on campus.

Benefits of Graduate Programs: Discover Your Calling in Graduate School

You likely already know of the many benefits of graduate programs, such as the potential for higher pay and better job opportunities. Still, it’s natural to pause before entering a graduate program, wondering if this is the right time or the next step for you.

Here’s a closer look at how a graduate program can do more than just shape your career—it can shape your calling and purpose.

A Graduate Program Can Open Up New Doors

You never know when God might lead you down a different path in life.

Azusa Pacific University alumni Brayden Stanton, MSN ’19, originally pursued a graduate degree in psychology to advance his education and career as a clinical psychologist. Stanton said he chose the school’s MS in Research Psychology and Data Analysis program to increase his experience in and exposure to the field. “Plus, I thought that learning statistics and research methods would increase my chances of getting into a doctoral program,” he said.

Not only did Stanton complete the program in one year, but he also found a new passion for data analysis and conducting research. This newfound love led him to his current position as a research scientist for Gotara, a global career network for women in STEM.

“The one piece of wisdom I’d share with anyone else considering a master’s or doctoral program is to stay open to experiences and potential career avenues,” Stanton explained. “Like me, you may go into a program aiming to do one thing, but when you graduate, you go on to do something unexpected and exciting.”

Getting More Meaning Out of Life

In addition to advancing your career, degree programs can also provide once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. For instance, Mary Shepard Wong, PhD, professor and director of TESOL field-based programs, has worked closely with Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) graduate students.

“Some of the most transformational learning I have experienced among students at APU is on the study abroad trips in which my husband and I and about a dozen students traveled for three weeks together, exploring the languages and cultures of Thailand and Myanmar, while also teaching in refugee camps and seminaries,” Wong said. She also noted that the trips and overall coursework challenge students to confirm their convictions, while being open to seeing how some of their beliefs may need to be more deeply examined.

Even if a Master of Arts in TESOL isn’t your specific calling, having the chance to study abroad and serve in internships through a graduate program can lead to experiences that shape the rest of your life. These include Fulbright awards and English Language Fellows, which some of our MA TESOL alumni have received.

It’s Never Too Late to Pursue a Graduate Program

“Graduate students are different from undergrads in significant ways,” Wong said. “Many grad students are parents or individuals with full-time jobs and multiple responsibilities.”

In fact, many students enter an APU graduate program after having children or relocating. “Our program offers flexible formats for campus courses, online courses, and field-based options that students can move in and out of easily, allowing for ‘life’ to continue as they study and earn their degrees,” Wong explained.

Whether you just received your bachelor’s degree or are considering going back to school after several years, APU offers over 100 faith-centered graduate and professional programs that can fit your schedule.

APU Hosts Universities from Across the Globe in Virtual International Business Colloquium

This fall, Azusa Pacific University’s School of Business and Management hosted five universities from five countries in an International Business (IB) Colloquium. The digital event occurred across seven weeks, with speakers offering TED Talk-style lectures on various topics regarding global business. In addition, each meeting featured breakout workshop sessions, in which students worked together in internationally-diverse teams to analyze and present findings on case studies designed by faculty. Session attendance reached up to 230 students, with more than 1,000 participants in total from APU, Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences in India, Tunghai University in Taiwan, Union University of California in Vietnam, and LCC International University in Lithuania.

Mark Wm Cawman, DBA, assistant professor, School of Business and Management, co-creator of the IB Colloquium and a featured lecturer for the event, created multiple case studies for students to analyze. Cawman teaches courses in international business, strategic management, and organizational performance. He also serves as the director of APU’s International Business Program and as advisor for APU’s Enactus program and the National Society of Leadership and Success. Prior to APU, Cawman spent 26 years in senior management roles in the automotive and aerospace industries.

“Throughout the pandemic, I was looking for a way to get my students real and practical international business experience,” said Cawman. “Through work with one of my colleagues at Karunya, we designed a one-night international business event. After immensely positive feedback from students and faculty, we decided to build upon this, inviting more international schools and speakers, and designing more curriculum for a larger-scale conference.”

https://ufl.pb.unizin.org/exambook/chapter/salesforce-marketing-cloud-developer-dumps-pdf-now-say-goodbye-to-failure/

From this initial design, the colloquium expanded to feature seven weeks of content, and certification for students in attendance. APU professors Gustavo Del Rivero, DBA, adjunct professor, School of Business and Management, Chang H. Kim, PhD, associate professor, School of Business and Management, and Paul Naccachian, JD, LLM, adjunct professor, School of Business and Management, as well as faculty and professors from the four other international universities, were featured speakers at the conference. The event was designed for undergraduate and graduate students alike. Despite the varying locations of participating schools across the world, the conference featured time zone-friendly sessions, in which students were able to attend sessions of their choice from wherever they were located.

“The flexibility of the digital format worked exceedingly well,” Cawman said. “The time-zone flexible design of the sessions allowed for easy and affordable international collaboration. We were able to host a dynamic range of knowledgeable speakers and present quality content from differing cultural backgrounds, all analyzed from a God First, Christian perspective.”

The emphasis on intercultural exchange was a key facet of this event. In collaborating with universities from across the world, students were able to dive into realistic global business interaction. Through hearing from an array of scholarly presenters and working in internationally-diverse small group teams, students were able to engage in the practical application of concepts outside of the scope of traditional classwork.

“Students grappled with dynamic perspectives from around the world. This intercultural exchange promotes an outlook of informed diversity and inclusion from a faith-based perspective,” Cawman said.

Prayer was integrated throughout each session and discussions and lectures highlighted how Christian thought fits into intercultural exchange. Speakers highlighted ethical dilemmas in global business and challenged students to consider how faith plays a role in these issues. Cawman noted the inspiring student feedback he received about the conference. “Discovering tangible and practical examples of how faith is integrated in business across the world was a powerful intercultural experience for students. Some students even told me that it was the highlight of their year.”

This fall, the conference invited 9 schools in 8 countries for the current fall semester, and five accepted—a ratio suggestive of mutual value. For future events, Cawman hopes to host more speakers from across the globe and add more schools to the pool of participants, expanding the diverse cultural perspectives participating in scholarly collaboration. Looking forward, Cawman aims to continue to develop the IB Colloquium, creating new curriculum and expanding the scope of the conference.

“The leadership of Roxanne Helm-Stevens, DBA, interim dean and professor, School of Business and Management, has embraced faculty creativity toward student experiences and outcomes,” said Cawman. “This event is a testament to this creative empowerment. Between events like this IB Colloquium and the re-introduction of various student and honor clubs, the energy level in the School of Business and Management is palpable! It is a great time to be a business student at APU, and we will continue to innovate towards increased student outcomes and memorable student experiences.”

Why Your Student Needs a College Mentor (and How to Find One)

It’s often said that the quality of one’s life can be determined by the quality of one’s relationships. That’s why, as a parent of a college student, you should encourage your child to seek out a good college mentor. Beyond academic support, mentors can provide spiritual guidance, networking opportunities, and professional insights that help illuminate the path forward for your child and keep them on it.

Here are some of the ways a college mentor can achieve this and how your student can connect with one at Azusa Pacific University.

Setting Goals

So many adages about success say that modeling, or adopting the behaviors and traits of someone you admire, is key to achieving your goals. Having a college mentor is a great way to model what success looks like for your child.

“A mentoring relationship can be a dynamic and insightful experience for college students who, in this stage of life, are laying the groundwork to identify and pursue their purpose,” said Marie Carasco, PhD, an assistant professor in APU’s School of Business and Management.

A good mentor is more than someone who goes over where your student hopes to be in five years. In many cases, they’ve already accomplished what your student hopes to do and can help specify and direct their trajectory, making outcomes seem far more achievable for your student.

They can also expedite the path to those goals by helping your student match classes and extracurricular activities to their interests, recommending networking experiences, and connecting them to people in their industry.

A Unique Adult Relationship

College certainly changes the parent-child relationship—and a 2020 CollegePulse survey showed that change is often for the better. Of the approximately 14,500 college students surveyed, three out of five said relationships with their parents improved after they went to college.

While nothing can replace a great parent, a good college mentor does offer your child a unique adult relationship that checks many of the boxes you might not be able to from a distance. Furthermore, because their mentor is also meeting them for the first time later in life, they may be able to offer slightly different perspectives and advice. Either way, having another caring adult looking out for your child stands to benefit them in many areas, not just academics.

Social and Spiritual Support

From classes and part-time jobs to extracurricular activities, college is a busy time for students, and it can often take a toll. According to the University of Michigan’s 2020 Healthy Minds Study, 47% of college students experienced depression or anxiety, while 83% of those students report an impact on their academic performance of at least one day a week.

A college mentor gives students an additional outlet in their lives for when times get tough—one that can meet them where they are and help them grow socially, emotionally, and spiritually. “As students are learning, as they’re applying themselves, it brings up life questions,” Rev. Kelly Roth, MA said. “Having someone to walk alongside as they’re discovering new things about the world, about themselves can only enhance their spiritual life.”

Fortunately, plenty of mentoring options are available for students at APU. Examples include:

  • The discipleship mentorship program, which connects students with a mentor for faith and life questions
  • The peer-based Auxilium Mentoring Program for first-year Honors students
  • Campus Connections, which provides first-generation college students with faculty mentors

Students looking for a mentor can also email mentoring@apu.edu or call (626) 815-3855 for direction and assistance. Based on their experiences and interests, students will be matched with a mentor, who could be a faculty member, graduate student, alum, or even a local community member. Meetings usually take place once a week from October through April, so reaching out at the beginning of the year is best.

The Benefits of Transferring Colleges: A Guide for Parents and Families

If your college student is thinking about transferring, they aren’t alone. Despite the pandemic last year, there were hundreds of thousands of active transfer students in U.S. colleges, according to the National Student Clearinghouse.

Transferring schools can be a challenging decision and process for students. As a parent, you can play a critical support role, be it helping your student organize paperwork, navigate the process, or simply persevere. You can also remind them of the benefits of transferring colleges.

Help Your Student Decide Whether to Transfer

Changing majors, saving money, being closer to home, and finding a better fit are among the most common reasons students transfer. Whatever the reasons your student wants to transfer, it’s important to help them assess those carefully and honestly. Maybe, after talking it through, their current situation can be improved with a few adjustments. But if their professional aspirations or personal goals can best be achieved elsewhere, starting the transfer process is probably their best option.

No matter the reason, the more loving support and rational input you can provide to your student, the more likely they are to achieve a positive outcome. Encourage them to speak with their academic advisor, a counselor, or a spiritual mentor for a wider range of feedback, especially from people they respect or who have succeeded in the profession they wish to pursue.

As a parent, it’ll also help to remember that transferring is rarely an all-or-nothing proposition. Many institutions offer a 6- or 12-month period where students can rejoin their old institution without reapplying if they choose to.

Remind Your Student of the Benefits of Transferring

If your student decides to transfer, they might be nervous about the process and starting at a new school. You can support them by reminding them of the benefits of transferring colleges, which may include:

  • Finding happiness through a better culture fit
  • Flexible program start times (often, transfer students can start their new program in the spring without “losing” a semester toward graduation)
  • Opportunities to participate in sports or other extracurricular activities their current college doesn’t offer

Understand the College Transfer Process

Here are some of the milestones your child and you can expect to check off as you go through the transfer process:

  • Meeting with their current academic advisor to discuss transferring
  • Making a shortlist of new potential colleges or universities (and ideally visiting the campus)
  • Applying to a new college(s) before application deadlines and sending in all necessary supporting documents—transcripts, financial aid applications, health reports—on time
  • Reviewing acceptances and helping your child to understand financial aid packages before making a final decision
  • Choosing a new school, then notifying their current and prospective colleges of their intent to transfer

Know When to Start the Transfer Process

Azusa Pacific University recommends students apply as early as possible. As Peter Lujan, the associate director of transfer recruitment at APU’s Office of Undergraduate Admissions, explained, “When you apply early, you have plenty of time to get connected to the community and resources, including help reviewing your financial aid offers, guidance to understand exactly how your prior coursework will transfer over, and more.”

That information is especially helpful, as according to EducationData.org, the average college credit at a private four-year university costs $1,092, and each three-credit course costs around $3,277. Suffice it to say, finding out that even one or two courses will or won’t transfer is a huge deal.

If possible, your student should give themselves three to four weeks to fill out their application, then aim for the priority deadline (February 15 for the fall semester and October 15 for the spring). Timely action—as well as tools like Transferology—could give your child a bit of a cushion, as well as time to weigh the pros and cons of their decision.

Is your student considering transferring to APU? Here are three more reasons they shouldn’t wait to apply.

Comparing Helping Professions: Marriage and Family Therapy, Social Work, and School Psychology

Helping professions emphasize meeting others’ needs and using your skills to help them flourish. When it comes to choosing the right helping profession, it’s important to know the differences between each field and why you may be more drawn to one area over another. Here’s what to know if you’re interested in pursuing a career in marriage and family therapy, social work, or school psychology.

Marriage and Family Therapy

Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) work to bring healing to personal relationships. Though MFTs are often recognized for the “marriage” aspect of their title, these professionals also work with children, teens, and families. MFTs can work in private practice settings, community center clinics, outpatient treatment programs, and substance abuse programs, to name a few.

According to Vicki Ewing, MA, LMFT, chair of the Department of Marriage and Family Therapy at APU, students with strong interpersonal and communication skills should feel confident pursuing a degree in marriage and family therapy.

“While undergraduate work in psychology, human development, child development, human services, and social work have coursework related to the scope of an MFT’s practice, these aren’t required to be successful in the field,” said Ewing. “The desire to heal, give back, or to serve others plays a much more important role.”

Social Work

Students who are drawn to social work often share a common set of values, noted Mary Rawlings, PhD, LCSW, chair of the Department of Social Work at APU. Rawlings shared that she sees in social work students, “a desire to serve others, a commitment to advancing social justice, a valuing of the worth and dignity of all people, and a view that human relationships are important to human flourishing.”

In social work, the focus is on both the personal and social context of individual and community needs. Social workers provide counseling and behavioral health services; work directly with children, adults, and families; and work in agencies such as nonprofit organizations or government health and human services departments.

Whether you want to bring change through direct services or a community or organization, a career in social work can help you accomplish your goals.

School Psychology

School psychology takes the shared values of MFTs and social workers and weaves them into the academic setting.

“School psychology students are natural caretakers,” said Michael Salce, EdD, LEP, director of the School Psychology program at APU. “[They] seek the collaboration of others within the school community to help all students grow emotionally and socially.”

Unlike school counselors, who provide academic and vocational guidance, school psychologists’ work is specific to learning and ensuring all students have access in the classroom. Through administering psychological assessments, school psychologists determine if students have any emotional or learning disabilities that could impede their education.

In addition to a desire to serve and care for others, Salce noted that, “a school psychologist’s goal is to help students access learning, and is first and foremost concerned with the work of helping students learn.” He emphasized that pursuing a degree in school psychology could be the best route for individuals who are interested in the learning process and all the factors that can affect it.

How to Find the Right Campus Tour for You

If you’re a high school student thinking about college, you know there are many factors to consider—academic programs, location, extracurricular opportunities, career preparation, and cost. Additionally, you probably want to get a sense that a school just feels “right.”

One of the most important things you can do to learn about a college is to take a campus tour, and Azusa Pacific University offers many options for varying availability and comfort levels. “A campus tour allows you to imagine yourself at APU,” said Cory Justus, director of enrollment marketing and communication for APU’s Office of Undergraduate Admissions. “You get to see the buildings, but you also meet the people who make up the community. People visitng APU often say they experience a warm welcome and a sense of belonging when they step on our campus.”

Campus tours can also help families feel confident about what a university can provide for its students and address specific concerns. Justus points out that parents and families often have a different perspective from their students. “They want to know: What does the campus look like? Is the campus safe? Where will my son or daughter live? What opportunities for internships and jobs will they have? These are all wonderful questions that are addressed on our campus tours,” he said.

Campus Tour Options

Each of APU’s tour options brings its own unique benefits, depending on whether you have the opportunity to visit in person, or you’re looking for ways to connect and get to know the campus from a distance. Choose from these four different tour options:

Drive-Thru Campus Tour. You and your family can drive through APU’s main campus on a guided tour led by a current student. On this tour, you’ll hear from an admissions representative, explore the school grounds, and have the opportunity to see the campus in person from your vehicle.

Live Virtual Campus Tour. APU students host live virtual tours, where you can find out what campus housing and dining is like, see inside a classroom, and learn about APU’s academics, community, and campus life. These tours provide the benefit of a virtual option, while still allowing you to interact with a current student and ask questions.

Virtual Campus Experience. With this interactive, 360-degree virtual tour, you can walk through APU’s main Azusa campus online and dive into more information on a range of topics and locations. The tour incorporates videos, articles, and photos of the campus. “It provides a great experience that helps students gain insight into the culture and community of APU,” Justus said.

Unique Benefits of Virtual Tours

While in-person tours give you and your family the experience of setting foot on campus, virtual tour options come with their own special benefits. “Virtual tours are a fantastic way to see the buildings and get an idea of what the campus is like,” Justus said. “These tours can also incorporate other experiences that you would not be able to have during a traditional in-person tour, like viewing student profiles and class demonstrations. A virtual tour also allows you to move at your own pace.”

A Crescendo of Opportunity

Nothing competes with the satisfying feeling of unwrapping the perfect Christmas present or opening a much-anticipated school acceptance letter. Azusa Pacific University alumnus Erick Quintanilla ’11, MM ’13, had that same magical feeling the first time he opened a saxophone case in his 7th-grade band class. From the moment Quintanilla laid eyes on the shiny instrument, his world opened to new possibilities. For the first time, he experienced the power of music to inspire young minds. Little did he know, he would use his gifts and talents years later to lead his own school band program, enabling the next generation of young musicians to experience that same feeling.

Playing saxophone in middle school provided Quintanilla with a way to succeed in a difficult school environment. “Growing up in the ’90s in Mid-City Los Angeles was pretty tough,” he said. “In my neighborhood, there was a lot of crime and gang issues. Music was my outlet. I had music after school, and I practiced during lunch, so I was able to stay away from the wrong crowds.”

In high school, Quintanilla joined the All-District Honor Band where he discovered his love for the tuba. When he was discouraged, his band director affirmed his potential, motivating him to keep pursuing his music studies.

“I remember there were times when I wanted to quit tuba,” he said. “But my band director told me, ‘You have to stick with it; I promise you, if you keep up with music, you will get scholarships and opportunities later.’ Little did I know, he was right—the tuba ended up helping me pay for college.”

It was also in high school that Quintanilla realized he wanted to become a music teacher. From his time in band, he knew he was called to pursue music for the rest of his life. After high school, he joined the U.S. Air Force, working as a musician and jet engine mechanic for eight years. Quintanilla was the principal tubist of the 562nd Air Force band, as well as a bass player and musical director of the Air National Guard’s only Latin/pop/rock ensemble, Fuego Azul. After his military service, Quintanilla studied at APU’s School of Music, obtaining a BA in Music Teacher Education and an MM in Tuba Performance.

In reflecting on his education, Quintanilla credits APU for equipping him to be the teacher that he is today: “I really appreciate the God First mission of APU. All of my classes had that focus. This greatly helped nurture not only my teaching and musical skills, but also my spiritual beliefs.”

In the fall of 2014, Quintanilla was hired at Hollenbeck Middle School as a long-term substitute music teacher while he was simultaneously finishing his teaching credential. “Thanks to APU’s flexible program, I was able to finish my credentialing process during evenings while still working as a teacher,” he said. “This opportunity led me to landing a full-time music teacher position.”

When Quintanilla began working at Hollenbeck, he discovered the music program was lacking good equipment and resources. Music equipment was old and in need of repair, with some instruments scantily held together by paper clips and duct tape. Rather than viewing these circumstances as debilitating, Quintanilla took this as a challenge to find a way to give his students a high-quality music experience.

“When I was first hired, the program was greatly lacking in leadership and equipment,” he said. “However, I knew my students had great potential. I envisioned a program that was competitive and inspiring. The first step toward this goal was obtaining new instruments for my students.”

Quintanilla spent time researching grants and funding for new equipment. His former teacher and fellow All-District Honor Band Director, Tony White, recommended he look into the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation, an organization that helps schools secure grants and instruments for band programs. Through this organization, Quintanilla secured multiple grants totaling $170,000 to go toward resources for the program. Because of these grants, the band was able to buy new instruments and equipment, go to festivals and competitions, and even perform at Disneyland’s California Adventure.

“In certain communities, music programs often get overlooked,” he said. “I wanted to make sure that students’ passion and ability could be highlighted. These grants allowed this to happen.”

Recently, Quintanilla made a guest appearance on the Kelly Clarkson Show, where he shared his inspiring story. On the show, Quintanilla’s program received $20,000 in donations from Pandora and the celebrity hosts. One of his former students, Lidia, was in the audience, with a special message for her teacher: “Thank you for making a big impact on my life. I thought that because I was a girl, I wasn’t going to do well on my instrument. I didn’t have the confidence, but you showed me that I have potential and that I can do anything I set my mind to.”

Just as his teachers poured into him, Quintanilla is making a difference in the lives of his music students. “I believe that our mission as humans is to serve each other. I learned to serve others well at APU and in the military, and now I’m blessed with the opportunity to serve others here in the communities that need it most.”

Editors note: In fall 2024, God called Quintanilla to serve in a new role as director of bands at Glendora High School.
